    Thanks for the tutorials Chris. Its so cool of you to spend the time to come on here and show people how to get amazing results for wicked cheap. And you give away these secrets for free. Your a good man and a great craftsman and artist. You have helped me so much. We make these models and solder in motors and wheels and then drag race them on 80 foot slot car tracks. But we want the rest of the models to look cool.. Thats where you come in. I've been able to get great results following your techniques. Thanks again to take the time to help us slot car drag racers out. If you're ever in Vegas come visit Silver State Slot Cars bro.

    Nice work man. I'm an airplane guy, but was looking for some videos on spraying craft paints and came across this. Nice explanations, and I dig the fact that you try to preach the money saving tips to folks. Im always stressing the same to my followers as well. Makes zero sense spending money that doesn't need to be spent. Thanks again and keep up the great work.

      +Chris Chapman We all learn now stuff as we go. I'd love to try my hand at automotive work sometime soon. I've always though craft paints would be awesome simply because there's such a crazy line of colors available. Quick question, you're talking here about moving from novus to 3M Polish. Is there a single item that they carry or is there like a two part set kind of like novus?

    • @ChrisChapman195
      @ChrisChapman195  8 років тому

      +Fox thre3 custom models I actually use Maguire 's ultimate polish. cheaper and works great. The novice for 2 ounces cost as much as an 18 ounce bottle. I get the same results.

    • @foxthre3custommodels196
      @foxthre3custommodels196 8 років тому

      +Chris Chapman so you're essentially only using one product now, or the maguire Polish and then the yellow wax? Obviously, if you can achieve great results without having to apply two two part products like novus, that helps tremendously.

    • @ChrisChapman195
      @ChrisChapman195  8 років тому

      +Fox thre3 custom models I do use the Dame yellow wax for final shine as well. If a person needs to use something as song as novus 3 or an abrasive that strong they need to spend more time cleaning the parts or cleaning the painting area lol. Just a light swirl remover then WV should be all that is needed.

I do wash them with Dawn dish soap and I let them dry overnight before I paint then the next morning I will take and brush them off real good set them in the Sun for 30 minutes along with the paint and the first coat comes out really good but the second coat is showing orange peels

    Great video, Chris, very helpful...I like the Novus system as well, but wondered why you don't like to use their finishing polish, the #1, the one that is almost like water...just wanted your thoughts on it...

    • @ChrisChapman195
      @ChrisChapman195  10 років тому

      Thanks Tommy. I do use the #1 Novus. It is a clean and shine though. Not a protectant. The wax covers the paint and gives a clear medium for light to shine through onto the paint of which reflects back through the wax amplifying the shine, gloss and wet finish. Wax also protects from dust scratching the actual paint. The clean and shine is used after everything is done as it wipes away any oils and dust and brings a clean shine to the car. Not a protectant though. It also deters dust particles from landing on the kit as well. So two totally different uses for each product.

    • @ColonelRebScaleModels
      @ColonelRebScaleModels 10 років тому

      Thanks for the explanation, I knew about the #1's dust deterrent properties, but didn't know that it was a protectant...thanks for the info, again, I learned another new today!!! :-)

    I have another question, how long do you wait until you polish and wax your acrylic painted model cars. I've heard some people wait 2 weeks to a month or 2. I started to polish and wax the next day after clear coating(pledge) and it worked good on my hood but the rest of the car stayed dull. Now I'm still using novus 2 & 3 and then maguiars yellow wax(26). What would you do. Any information you can give me

      Mac B Nope, no wet sanding. With the acrylics water will turn them into little balls of rubber. I only polished on this one. If it comes out uneven I have dry sanded before with 2000 grit paper until whole model is dull. Then polish and wax. Thanks for stopping by. I hope this helps.

    One thing Chris. Why did you keep the windshield and rear window areas masked?

    • @ChrisChapman195
      @ChrisChapman195  8 років тому

      I use aluminum foil for my Chrome trim. Even if I used by I would do this so that it keeps the window trim clean and in scale. If you add the foil on painted areas it makes the trim thicker then normal and be out of scale. This easy I can just put it on bare plastic.

    • @ChrisChapman195
      @ChrisChapman195  10 років тому

      There are differences but to be honest not many. 3M has a polishing and rubbing compound that work great. Remember a mild or fine grit compound should be all you need. If you have to use a heavy grit then something id going on wrong. MaGuire's has a great combo compound as well. I do like MeGuiar's polish as it works great on my Harleys and so I use it on my models. Then any good yellow or carnauba wax will work. Again I use MeGuiar's as it is what I use on my Harley's. I use the Novus because I bought it a long time ago and need to use it lol. I will probably go with 3M brand as I can get it locally and a lot more for the same price.

    I clear coated my acrylic model with LA's mop & shine but its a little rough. What would be my next step. Should I dry sand it with like a 6000 grit & then add another layer of my clear coat or does the polishing with novus & maguiars wax make it smooth. 8ve paint my car with all acrylic paint. Any tips that could help me. In going for a show car shine look.

    • @ChrisChapman195

      Unfortunately, Totally awesome mop and shine changed their formula so you don't get a shine anymore. It is great for flat clear though. However, I just use pledge floor care for my clear now. You can dry sand but polishing usually works well enough unless it is real bad.

I put 2 more coats of Pledge on and as they dry everything is becoming less sticky so my thought is that the answer to my issue was that you have to build up layers of pledge to get above the paint and create a dry shell.

    This might be a really ignorant question. But... Is clear coat only for acrylic paint. I am starting to build model kits and I have been using enamel paints since right now it's what I'm comfortable with. Any help on getting that clear polished pro look on enamel painted model kits would be greatly appreciated! (love your videos by the way)

      +ExisteDiosInc Hey there bud. When it comes to clear coat paint it depends on some types of paint of what you want it to look like. Other types it's crucial to have it on it. First off with enamel and lacquer based paints you do not have to put a clear on it if you spray a gloss color. It takes seven or so days or a day in a dehydrator to full gas out(dry). If it has the shine you want then you can leave it. If you want it shinier that is where clear coat comes into play. However to save time and money from putting a clear on it you can always wet sand the paint until it is completely dull. Then use different grits to make it slowly get a slight shine back. This way you know it is as smooth as possible. You also want to do this with clear coat. Now clear or not use a polishing compound to lightly rub the model bringing back more shine. The n use a car wax to wax it like the bottle says and KABAM! You have a beautiful shiny model to be proud of. When it comes to acrylic water based paints be it craft or model produced you HAVE to put a clear coat over the top to seal it in. If not the paint will rub off while you handle it. One thing to take note on is a flat paint will lay down smoother then a gloss paint. With most gloss paint like enamel and lacquer based paints you need to sand before clear to get them as smooth as possible. With a flat acrylic you can just put a clear over the paint and if you use pledge floor care you can just polish and wax. If you use an enamel or lacquer you will need to sand it smooth then polish and wax. Glad to have you following. Please don't be afraid to share you builds as I like to look and watch as much s I do building them. Hope this helps.
