Up and Over Sonora Pass

Sonora Pass at an elevation of 9,624 feet is the second-highest highway pass in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Like most high Sierra Nevada passes, the highway is closed in winter. I crossed over the pass just a few days after it opened for the season.

Thanks for not playing any crappy bumper music. Nothing beats the fresh mountain air at ten thousand feet, it makes feel alive.
Love that place the Pacific Crest Trail crosses right over the highway at the pass and there is a really nice picnic only area at the trailhead on north side of road. Great place when there is no snow.

I drove this very road back in July. Coming from the England I can say I’ve never seen anything quite like the scenery here. When we hit the top, at an elevation just shy of 10000 feet we pulled in and got to play in the snow. Snow! In JULY!! Amazing!!
The smell of the pine trees, the sound of the river, the size of the mountains, the beauty of it all is like nothing we have here.
Driving the road itself was a bit scary at certain points. A few sheer drops here and there. The pulse quickened somewhat. But I’d do it all again in a second.

There certainly is a lot of traffic....about twice as much as there was the last time I rode this pass on my motorcycle.

Did this drive from Tahoe 6/23/19. We were going to Yosemite as well. The extra time was well worth it. Way less people than Tioga and more scenic in my opinion. I love when people don't ruin their videos with crappy music and pointless commentary. Excellent video!

Is the elevation hard on the vehicle transmission and will Sonora take me to bodie ghost town or close to it ?

If you are coming from the west and need to cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Sonora pass is one of a few different ways to do it. Bodie Ghost Town is about 50 miles east of Sonora Pass. Like the Tioga Road, the pass is closed due to snow about seven or eight months a year. 🙂
