  • A kill plot food plot can be a great addition to your land. However, most food plots should never be hunted with a bow. Here is the WHY, HOW and WHERE for creating a highly effective kill plot on your land to bowhunt over, this Fall.

    Thanks Jeff- I noticed some of your example plans have food plots pretty close to home/cabin driveways. You screen them with switch but I imagine the deer can still hear a car driving in. that doesn't spook them?

      Doesn't bother them to bad as long as the vehicle keeps rolling by.
      Watched deer keeping eye out for vehicles many times from different places over the years. Lead does are a little cautious, but not the ones that follow. Spotted nice buck bedded in large cornfield, middle of day on neighbors property and about 3oclock truck drove within 30yrds of him and dropped off a guy at a stand along creek,drove past again on way to road..then went back to stand 20minutes later and back out
      (Must of forgot something)
      The buck just laid his head down and waited for truck to pass,then stretched neck up afterwards to make sure it keeped going.
      Awsome to watch with binoculars from my barn. Neighbors not real stealthy.

    Not clear on planting timing for 1/2 and 1/2 greens and brassica. I found article on your website that said plant at same time. But more recently videos saying brassica and greens a few weeks apart. How do you do that if planting into buckwheat. Do I need to plant buckwheat staggered too? Thanks and just can’t get enough of you great content. So appreciated.

    Not living in a location with any ag fields other then hay fields would you still run a small plot like this?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  Рік тому

      Yes definitely if it is on the way to a much larger food source. I wouldn't ev n use a small kill plot if ag was the only nearby food source as it isn't a good enough draw for the majority of the season.

    I watch every one of your videos and try to absorb the vast knowledge that you provide I've watched other people's videos on travel corridor trails for deer do you personally recommend Leaf blowing out down to the dirt the deer travel corridor trail
    I know this is off topic for this particular video thank you in advance for your answer

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  2 роки тому

      Hi Gary...first off thanks a lot for watching!
      I do not recommend lead blowing in any way. It is a very low priority if any at all. That is purely a MI thing, largely born because some of the habitat folks wait until early Nov to hunt because they have a difficult time hunting their land during the early season.
      Blowing leaves off during the off season helps a little...some times, in some circumstances. BUT, you would NEVER want to blow leaves off in mid to late October on your land. Or at least if you are my neighbor...it's a great idea 😁 Again, some look at it they will wait until early Nov to hunt anyways so it's a week or 2 after they blow leaves, but even then if I'm their neighbor...I'm shooting their target buck after they blow the leaves off 😊 Just so many more important priorities to do they no one really should have time left over to do something like that.

    How critical is adding 2-4D to the second spraying of switchgrass? Thank you for all you do!

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  2 роки тому +4

      Hi Bret...not critical but a nice advantage! There are many glyphosate resistant broadleaf weeds that 2-4D will kill. However, you don't want to spray too close to switchgrass germination time (within 2 to 4 weeks) or it will kill the switchgrass.

    Got a question about Cedars. I hunt a 50 acre parcel. It’s about 85% cedar with autumn olive, and sumac pockets mixed in. And hardwoods on the ridge tops. It’s very thick, my dad feels like we need to clear a lot because the deer can get by you with out ever seeing them. I feel like our food plots if we hunt it right will bring them in the open.

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  2 роки тому +3

      Hi Jordan! Killing 1/4 acre...1/8th acre...1/10th of an acre openings in the cedar by cutting, spraying clearing can be a great way just to make the area more attractive in general. You want good early auccessional growth to take place in those pockets to iwffer diversity. Try to give it a natural look. Some of those might make deer more visible and then clearing a deer trail thru it all to comment bedding to food sets up stand locations beautifully in that thick cover

      Hi Isaac! There still should be a lot of time for rain to knock it onto the soil. Taking a kick at the ground and seeing if soil is opened up immediately is a good sign you will be fine. Hopefully you Simazined first? Also the time to put switch down is long before the 2-4D and Gly combo, just because you want to give the seed time to work onto the soil thru repeated wind and rains

  • @danding24

    I have mixed Ag here in Wisconsin. My question is, do you plant your typical no till seed blends (½ brassica and ½ green forage) in your hunting plots as well? What would you plant if the plot is shaded?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  2 роки тому +5

      Hi Drew! There are no real, quality blends that you can plant in shadey plots...so I never plant in too much shade.
      In my small hunting plots I plant the same green blends...If they are too small I would go with clover or rye...1/10th of an acre or less.
