  • The Cairngorms - Sandy Beaches, Summit Barns and Shelter Stones
A long, demanding but thoroughly rewarding hike to the heart of the Cairgorms and eventually to the middle hill - Beinn Mheadhoin. I wasn't too sure how far I would go but was keen on visiting Loch Avon (A'an) and Loch Etchachan with lunch at The Shelter Stone. The weather improved so I pressed on to the UK's 13th highest mountain :)
A fantastic hike in the Cairngorms...

Maybe worth mentioning that in winter that walk is a very different prospect and even the innocuous slope you descended on the track down to Loch Avon has claimed victims to avalanche. The basin can be a very difficult place to get out of if that slope is loaded and even then the wind on the plateau can mean it's a hands and knees job till you get lower down. Very good map and compass work plus distance travelled calculation skills literally vital. The plateau was the scene of one of the most tragic losses of life back in the 70's I think, the Fe Bui ('scuse spelling) disaster. You'd never think it on a summer's day. One winter back in the 80's two SAS troopers died of exposure and exhaustion in fierce winds within a couple of miles of the Coire Cas car park as I recall. A beautiful wild place all the same.

Thanks Barry - very good point. I didn't mention this and you are absolutely correct, a completely different proposition in the winter months and some very good point made - will pin this comment to the top ...

Scotland's Mountains A good pal of mine and I attempted this walk in early January with the aim to camp at Etchichan. We had run into two individuals staggering about near the summit about 1530 without a compass/phone/in-reach/map and were finding it difficult to navigate back to the lifts. We walked them up to the top cairn to show them the lifts and descending back down to find the path down to Loch Avon had risen and frozen over and we deemed it unpassable at 16:00, just before getting dark. We were prepared for a cold, windy night on the hill though and spent a very breezy and cold night just on the hill beside Cairngorm. It's not for the faint of hearted in the winter! As you both stated, this place needs to be taken seriously! Thanks for sharing.
Nonetheless, we will be back in spring, what a place.

Thanks for another gd'n Murray, Despite the unhelpful conditions, you aced it yet again. The respect demanding remoteness of that inhospitable high sub-arctic plateau, it's brutally sudden cliffs waiting to trap the careless and unwary, contrasting with the innocence of sheltered lochans , what a landscape! truly awe inspiring. Did Carn Toul and across the western plateau above the Lairig Gru , and on down to Aviemore, crisp snow underfoot,a flawless blue above, one winter, long years ago. An indelible memory, one of life's best, but if I had to chose, I'd pick the the route you took today. It's atmosphere of unforgiving wilderness reaches my soul. A landscape with a barely hidden savagery waiting to punish the foolish or merely unfortunate and to make one grateful for whatever meagre shelter chance can offer. There's such heart-warming passion in your portrayal of of these peerless landscapes that brings to life their very essence and re-wakens those times when I too could wander and sojourn among them, wild camping where nightfall found me, falling asleep or waking, to the rustle and patter of sleat on the fly. Times I'm grateful to have had. Thanks again for the pleasure of seeing your mountain journeys and for sharing your observations on the landscape you are exploring, Stay safe Murray, Atb buddy.

Hello Murray, as someone who has only climbed totsy hills such as Dumyat in Stirling and Ben A'an, what would you say is the best way to get involved with climbing some of the bigger hills. I assume you need to knowledge of the mountains and that is what I am here for.
Where can I best look to find out what sort of gear and equipment I would need for hiking some bigger hills? Is there anyway to research how difficult each hill is and what sort of fitness level they are intended for?
I'm not the fittest chap in the world but I really, really want to start climbing some big hills, especially for my sunrise photography. I'd just like to be able to go into it safely and know I am well equipped if anything were to go wrong etc.

Hi Murray, I've been watching a lot of your videos and I'm trying to plan a trip to Cairngorm's in Jan-Feb but I'm worried that I'll be under skilled to take on even the basic trips. Are there routes that will be easier during winter than others as a plan b. Hi - I always have the mantra of having all the winter kit on me whenever and wherever I g in the mountains between Oct and May - adverse conditions can hit at any time :) Have a look at the walkhighlands webpage as there are lot of walk on here from forest walks to the high mountains but please be wary of the high Carngorm mountains , they are not a place to be caught out in bad weather
Good luck and enjoy the trip
      Thanks for watching

Tell someone your route and approx return time. Especially somewhere as vast and exposed as up there.
