Leaving your phone on the table unattended is truly terrible advice. She could wander off or stop paying attention for whatever reason and then someone walks by and swipes it. I take my phone with me and it hasn't shot down any of my dates so pretty sure you're overthinking this.

Losing face can really knock the evening off the tracks. The problem is it can be really nuanced as to what exactly may trigger it.

I would often bring my phone to the toilet and it’s the norm for me to do so, I was questioned about it and her response was if you have nothing to hide leave it on the table.

Definitely don’t go to an expensive restaurant first date unless that’s your lifestyle and can afford it on all your meals. I’ve learned that Thai people do get uncomfortable and feel underdressed or not smart enough in some occasions, so just keep it simple and casual.

Nice Job! This guy gives the best overview of “Thai” sensitivity I have seen to date. I first encountered Thailand in the late 1960’s - have been in and out every since. Dated many Thai ladies ranging from bar girls to highly educated “hi sos”. Currently own a nice home in Bang Kapi (Bangkok suburb) and long time married to a Thai lady (an educated one from a Police family). What this guy says is right on so listen if you want success in first dates. The “face” thing is huge here as in other Asian culture but with a Thai flavor. I find any criticism (of about anything) but dress in particular is deadly, so don’t joke about it. Yesterday my wife dressed all in black and I commented “looks like you are dressed for a funeral” which caused a caustic and miserable day. Any conversation about death or dead people should be avoided as Thais have their own way of dealing with that. The “phone thing” is new to me being an old man, but my lovely 20 year younger wife acts exactly as described. The money and tipping guidance is right on (many times my wife has grabbed my generous tip and substituted it with 20 baht. But be aware - money is damned important to every Thai woman from bar girl to hi-so. Bar girls may seem a bit desperate but all Thai women I have ever met are curious about your earnings and financial health (and chat it up with friends). I have known honorable bar girls and bitchy hi-so women but loved many of both ilks. Overall Thai ladies are among the world’s best women IMHO.

Great video, here's a few more valuable tips gentleman!
1. All notifications off and LEAVE your phone in your pocket! Out of sight, out of mind completely
2. If you're seeing more than one women clean your room and get rid of all the black hair on your white floor tiles!
3. Treat Thai women with respect and don't assume you're going to get into their pants on the first date, instead show some interest in their culture and language, it will go a long way
4. When you talk on Line to multiple women, make sure you close each conversation after you're done as to not confuse yourself and reply to the wrong girl!! She'll NEVER let it go!
5. Don't touch them AT ALL on the first date or try to put your arm around them in public unless she initiates it!!
6. If she's going off to the toilet with her phone every 10 minutes, end the date ASAP, or politely ask them if everything is ok.
7. Be SUPER polite to the Thai restaurant staff and show that you have manners
8. Don't be a tight ass! (Within reason) any woman will feel undervalued if you are too stingy!
9. If they have limited English skills, speak slowly and clearly, and most importantly be patient with them!
10. Enjoy spending time with some of the most feminine, kind, beautiful and interesting women on the planet by using some of these rules, happy hunting gents!

I'm Thai, but I live in California now. When I lived in Thailand, I often left some tips on the table, unless a waitress dedicately taking good care of us, I would personally give her tips. This could be 100Bht. more or less. If you are dating a Thai woman, in most cases man should take care of the bill, it's the culture.

If your Thai date has your interest at heart she will check the bill is itemised correctly and see if there is a service charge...she will then tell you how much to pay inc tip :)

I was in thialand for the first time ever and I was hanging out with a local thia girl and since I'm from America I'm used to tipping for basically everything. I think I would just leave my phone in my pocket the whole time. that way you have no worry or fear about your phone potentially going missing when you go to the restroom. One thief could distract the person left at the table and a second thief could be gone with the phone in like 2 seconds, and potentially so could your date if you do not know them at all.
I truly don’t care. They can learn I’m not Thai and I’m going to do what I am going to do. I’m not the only one who is going to be adjusting to their norms. If they even want a chance at keeping me they’re not going to be a headache making big deals of these things.

sorry to say but that is called rude, never expect anything in return when you give something - why ?- You have no clue of Thailand culture, as you are in a Buddhist country and to 'give' is part of their daily life it actually starts already in the early morning when people give the food to the monks - so to expect something in return for what you think is your gernerousity is actually seen as rude - In Thailand you have to thank that you have to opportunity to give, as this allows you to do something good.
But as a common hint this is a rule for your life in the whole world - if you give never expect anything back, give it from you heart or do not give anything at all.
If you have this habbit or the thinking of your above comment you are really in the wrong country if you stay in Thailand.

I wear a cross body bag and always keep my phone in there. I would never leave it on the table unattended,, ever!!! I didn't realize about the tipping. I recently tipped a cashier girl 10 pesos in Mazatlan, Mexico. Holy Moly,, that happens to be a huge mistake and could result in the girl being fired for having extra money. You tip the person at the end of the counter for bagging your things. Sometimes the road to hell is paved with good intentions. When I first meet someone in a foreign country now,, the FIRST thing I use Google Translate for is to communicate that we have cultural differences and that I have only good intentions and that the translations are NOT always accurate!! LOL

In 1987, my Thai gf (born in the USA, then moved to Thailand until age 10, then back to the USA until age 21) and I visited Thailand. She tipped 15-20-25%, and said to me "We have so much, they have so little". This is whether or not we ate for 40 baht or for 200 baht per person.
I have lived here for 27 years since then, have continued with her tipping practices, and have yet to receive any response to show that I am looking at them in a condescending way.
I have had a hell of a time getting some friends out of the 20 baht or 10% tip mode, but a few have followed.

If you are foreign then the Thais will take your tips because they think you are a tourist who is wealthy and they dont care if its "rude". Its when a local tries to tip too much they dont like it - IME. Its a face thing. Again IME.

I agree with your practice completely. Stating that Thais do not tip is incorrect, Thais do tip. It may be a token of 50 -100 when the bill is several thousand. I was invited to join dinner with some european friends who drank and ate at a nice restaurant. When the bill arrived and the celebrant who invited us paid the bill, he did not leave a tip. He was confronted by staff who asked politely if there was a problem with the meal and service. He had to leave a tip to save face.
Phones, with close friends going out for dinner, I have asked no phones during dinner and I have been fortunate, that thai friends recognize my request to be attentive and friendly for an hour or so.

Pretty much all typical Asian cultural stuff. Born in the US and being Asian I usually forget these things so I am sure I am looked as a douche bag because of me being Asian so they assume I know the culture.
