Terrific video and info.. Neat install and it runs great. . I did a series III powertrain in my Fiero about 7 years ago and really like it. Added a 3.4" pulley and had to add an air/water intercooler. IMO while the performance is satisfying, we must accept that the 3800SC is a dated engine using older technology. Today the LFX engine is far lighter and produces 300-325 HP stock. If I were to do a Fiero engine swap today that would be my choice.
I like new technology but the simplicity and well documented swap detail availability along with somewhat plentiful relatively low cost 3800 supply makes it still the best choice for a high 11 second Fiero.
I gotta agree the 3.8l is unbeatable for a fiero build the price availability and dependability not to mention the cost per HP gain is honestly unbeatable you might be right if you're planning on running it for competition. But even if you blow the motor you can grab a replacement within a hr or 2 for a few hundred bucks
I'm pretty sure the 3.6l lfx doesn't have the following, popularity or upgrade choices the 3800 has and considering in stock form it's only a 10-60hp difference depending on the engine series and air intake choice that can be modified very easy and cheaply to run 350-400hp with a few diy mods I'd definitely choose the 3.8L those cam phaser engines are to problematic for most people

Back in the 80s a coworker had the indy edition. It had a factory intake snorkel from the engine compartment to the back of the roof. If I'm rembering correctly. I was surprised at its performance.

Hey man real good information on the video. I’m trying to build a fiero myself and I wanted to put the 3.8 in it. I was just wondering where you got yours and how many miles it had on it? I don’t know much about these engines and I want to see what would be a good buy based on the mileage.
I got a couple of old Fieros about 15 years ago that my dad was getting rid of. I took the best parts from both and made one with a 2.5 96HP engine. It was fun and got 30MPG but a couple of years later my father in law gave me a 3800 NA motor pontiac bonneville and so I decided to do the swap. Loved it but regretted not doing the supercharged 3800 so I purchased a hail damaged 150K mile Buick Regal and transplanted that engine into the car. I just made sure it had good compression and oil pressure as those are the two most important indicators of an engines health.
Thanks for the good information. How well does this car take twisties? Seeing it go down the strip it looks to have a ton of front end lift. I am looking to do a project Fiero as well, though I am leaning toward the 3900 since it starts NA at 240. I ask about the handling since I want to do track days and autocross with the Fiero, not so much straight line.
84-87 'sucked' with stock suspensions. 88's were 'better' during the time but are honestly harder to find parts for now. With modern shocks, struts, etc. the 84-87 will out perform any stock 88 by a mile. If you can find/afford an 88 there are benefits, but tracking down parts or modifying other parts are time consuming in comparison. If you want better brakes you can upgrade to grand am or C4 corvette brakes and you'll be fine.
3.9 despite making the same rated horsepower, you will never compete with the torque from a roots. Often, a tune alone and running good fuel, knock will not kill power and wheel hp will be well over the rated 240 at the crank.
I think the fiero manual transmissions are too weak. there's another five-speed that is used I can't remember exactly what it came out of but it's quite a bit stronger than the fieros transmissions. Before 4T65EHD just launches so hard in that little car and is quite durable and really is a lot of fun for drag racing. I get it though if your mind is made up for a manual there are some that work they just take a little more work to do.
Gotta say that I would put better fuel injection on and a better supercharger before the e85 ever went in because of how much maintenance would have to be done to upkeep the fuel system because e85 erodes the fuel lines and pump fittings more than regular gasoline. Better fuel rail and injectors would definitely help the power.
It's been on e85 for 5 years. Swapped in the correct fuel pump, e85 rated hoses and DECA 60 injectors, no issues. How are you going to get me more power? It's a serious question cuz if you can find more power I'll do it.
I'm looking forward to do the same engine swap on my future fiero gt, but was the new engine already fitting pretty well, or did it required a lot of modifications?
I changed the engine, transmission, computer, and took the wiring harness from the donor vehicle and essentially spliced it into the fiero's harness. That's pretty bad, but I can't really give you a step-by-step but that would get you started. Pennock's fiero forum, search the archives, there's tons and tons of info in there. That's exactly what I used as my main resource.
It doesn't, I just set it up that way to make more horsepower. E85 allows more horsepower with a supercharged setup without the expensive adding an intercooler.

I've watched about 5 of Toys4Life's videos on this car but haven't found a $$$ breakdown of the swap. You can find clean stock Fieros for $6K-$10K. How much was the build?
If I did a breakdown a few years ago it would be obsolete by now, Fiero prices have shot up the last couple of years. I received my Fieros (which were in rough shape) about 15 years ago for free from my father. I did a Total Restoration by combining the best parts of each into one four-cylinder fiero. At that point I fell upon a deal on a 3800 na engine and I had to swap that in. I love that but then I wanted a supercharged engine so I bought one for about 600 bucks. Hay man how did u do your catch can ive got an l67 was gonna delete the pcv & run hose from pcv housing & another from the blower that woul otherwise go 2 the t.b would this work plus I noticed u did yours differently.
I do not use a catch can and have had no issues with excessive consumption. I do have the 97 supercharger which has different hose routing than the 98 and newer - maybe that is what your are seeing?
I would love to -It would be a fun but time-consuming project. Unfortunately it would probably cost more than the cars worth - so not financially very feasible...? Having said that, if you have a big pocket full of money - I might be able to do it 😄.
Oh yeah, the super duty program. Those were impressive for sure but parts were never really readily available. Also, you're never going to have a ton of torque down low without displacement, so if you add 3.8 l and another atmosphere of boost at 2,000 RPM, that's where this setup really shines.
Part 2 is coming! Tranny is the 4 speed auto from the donor 97 regal gs. 4t65E-HD. Chose it because it is strong. I have beaten the daylights out of it for over 5 years with no issues! Hundreds of passes at the sticky dragstrip too...

Why is it that all anybody cares about is drag racing. Acceleration is important but the fiero was never designed as a drag car. Ths 88 became the icon because it had a new suspension that made it a great handling car. That's what made the car fun. Anyone can put their foot down. Big deal. Try learning to left foot brake while toe and heal double clutch coming up to a corner, down shift, hit the apex and fly out the other end of the corner. Driving is so much more than 0-60 or 1320. Try optimizing the car for what it was designed for....corners.
A car for the road track takes balance. That is why a 155 hp miata can beat a 755 hp hellcat in a tight road course. Let's see you makes the car into what it was intended?
I get it - drag racing is not your thing and that's totally cool. I respect the Miata but dont really like the way it looks. Agree spending $$$$$ on a hellcat to drag race is a waste of $$. You can build one hell of a drag car for 30k! Purpose of this project has been to go as quick as possible for the lowest amount of money (I have maybe 3k of $$ into this project) - and I would say every time I go to the track I am the cheapest 11 second car. I an not really into autocross or road courses (yet) but if and when I do get into it, a 5 speed Ecotec (or similar) in and 88 Fiero would be a ton of fun.
Thanks for the reply. As my old boss used to say, thats why they make both chocolate and vanilla ice cream. You drag race, i twist around corners. My only complaint is that the vast majority of you tube videos are about drag racing. There are alot more options, road racing, rallying and autocrossing to name few. Good luck with your project. Sounds like a fun challenge. I agree that the miata is not the prettiest car. Its appeal is its responsiveness. I currently have a mustang. The mustang is like a good running back. The miata is like Gene Kelly, the dancer from the 40's musicals. You drive a mustang. You wear a miata. That said, i always loved the fiero. I remember test driving it when it first came out. Yes, i am old. It was slow but the mid-engine layout made it feel special. You could feel it rotate about you, and that was with the bad suspension. I always wanted to drive an '88 with the good suspension. Again good luck wjth your "quest". Let me know how it goes.
@@Toys4Life No I missed that. LOL. But seriously I want to know how hard was it to run E85 in the 3800 SC Fiero. I took the entire gauge cluster out of the 97 Buick Regal GS, along with the engine, tranny, computer and wiring harness.
Where did you get the engine mount brackets
I made two of the three. The one closest the driver is a stock 97 Buick regal mount for that same position.
West Coast Fiero makes custom mounts and parts for 3800 swaps westcoastfiero.com/
Just trying to get info, will this type of swap work on a base 88' 2.5 as well?
You sure can, supercharged 3800s I've been put into every type of Pontiac Fiero made.
So cool!
Thank you sir!
@@Toys4Life what about your valve cover breather do u get oil staining the hood also did u need to tune it cause of the air difference?
What is the 0 to 60?
I have it on the data scan. I think 3.7 seconds if I recall correctly.
I Have an Chevrolet Omega 2004 here in Brasil that i think is the same tipe of engine
6 cylinder or 4?
Hey! I noticed you're out of MN. Any interest in swapping in a 3800 sc in my fiero for $$? Lol
I would love to -It would be a fun but time-consuming project. Unfortunately it would probably cost more than the cars worth - so not financially very feasible...? Having said that, if you have a big pocket full of money - I might be able to do it 😄.
What rpm does the engine peak?
It pulls really hard right up to 6200 RPM which is where I have it set to shift.
@@Toys4Life Do you remember more than 20 years ago. There was a Fiero with a 3 liter 16 valve 4 cylinder in a magazine?
It's not ringing a bell, specifically what engine?
@@Toys4Life I think it was called a Super Duty.
Oh yeah, the super duty program. Those were impressive for sure but parts were never really readily available. Also, you're never going to have a ton of torque down low without displacement, so if you add 3.8 l and another atmosphere of boost at 2,000 RPM, that's where this setup really shines.
How hard would it be to take a 3.8 out of a G.N.
Not sure, but I believe the 3.8 series 2 engine is an evolution of that motor, so it's actually better.
what transmission are you using? 4t60e?
4t65e hd from the donor car.
What kind of transmission?
4t65 hd e
What clutch and transmission do you use
Kinda important
Part 2 is coming! Tranny is the 4 speed auto from the donor 97 regal gs. 4t65E-HD. Chose it because it is strong. I have beaten the daylights out of it for over 5 years with no issues! Hundreds of passes at the sticky dragstrip too...
@@Toys4Life lol I had no idea you could jam all that in there
That's crazy
I want to see it
And I was always told that automatic gm 3.8 supercharged gtp and regals anything 3.8 has weak tranny
For eg
My dad had brand new 2001 Monte Carlo ss 3.8 and he commuted with it and gm did all the maintenance and it died at 242kms
And the tokd him He needs a tranny rebuild 3500 bucks
I found him a used one from a wreckers with warranty 500 bucks then he got another 2006 grand prix gt 3.8 supercharged series 3 and i want to get a pulley but I don't trust that tranny
It has 80k on it to
Dang things didn't weigh anything so you don't need that much power to make them absolutely fly.
Amen brother. Plus the weight is over the drive tires so they dig from a stop very well!
Imagine if pontiac made this back then
Corvette sales would have been cut by at least 1/3, maybe more!
No water/meth?
Not needed as I have E85 3 miles from my house in MN. Otherwise I would need meth or intercooler.
Dont do meth. It ruins lives. 😆
Bored? Just add another liter and a screamy screw!

Umm did you just say the hot ticket 2.8? LOL
Yep, did you see the screen caption I think it said lol...
@@Toys4Life No I missed that. LOL. But seriously I want to know how hard was it to run E85 in the 3800 SC Fiero. Like I said my swap was done back in 2000 with an 2000 GTP test drive crash that was a total with 289 miles on the clock. Now 20 years later it has a lil over 25k. The engine is still stock & I am looking for some more power that will not take away from reliability. This is my toy car & #3 back up car. I hardly never drive it. I like to sometimes race it at a local small Nascar track here on Wednesday nights & am just looking for some more power to hang with the big guys.
@@MercedesE63S-AMG You better subscribe for this (:-) *What fuel pump are you running? Deatsche Werks DW 300 - had it since 2013 NO issues
. *What injectors? Siemens Deka 60 lb - from ZZPerformance. Don't buy from sketchy sources i hear there are fakes... *Do you have to run new fuel lines rated for E85? NO. Just replace all rubber hose with line rated for ethanol. Available at auto parts store - says rating on the exterior of hose itself. *Any concerns with E85 in the Fiero fuel tank? - My tank was pretty clean. Some are rusty and dirty. I replaced my fuel filter (used a Tahoe flex fuel filter) in 1 month and cut it open to see if it was packed with "junk" from the tank cause I read it would be. It was fine. Good idea to do anyway. If it is dirty, Keep changing monthly until it cleans up. You don't want a clogged fuel filter which equals clogged fuel delivery. *How much timing are you running? - 20 degrees at WOT
*Did you tune your PCM yourself? - YES HP Tuners.
*Problems you ran in to? Pros and cons? No real problems. Tuning is not for everyone. I kind of wish you had gone into more detail on this build and performance. It was enough to be interesting, but not enough to really help someone trying to replicate your build. Time moves on... I guess there is no real way to go back and recreate a series on this build. Oh, well.
Sorry man, I didn't even have a UA-cam channel when I did most of the fiero build. If I do another one, which is a huge possibility, I would definitely create a video build thread!!!
@@Toys4Life There isn't a really good series on the process. If you do do it, I'd try to balance performance with reliability, trying to use the most straightforward process and the most off the shelf parts as possible. There is another UA-camr who did it, and while I respect his skill he made a lot of compromises, which required a lot of modifications to various parts and systems. This is not a problem if you intend to keep the car forever, I guess. But let's just say I'd hate to be the guy that gets his car next.
