  • What's up, folks! I'm back for the final tune on ABBA's 2021 album Voyage, "Ode to Freedom," a very clever and seemingly cheeky/funny song about writing an ode to freedom. The sonics of this are bliss, and I had fun tracking the meta-lyrics along the way. So join me as we finish the main run of our beautiful ABBA journey (courtesy of ABBA, of course, but also hero of the channel Adam; thank you, brother!). As I explain during the video, we'll loop back and hit any outstanding ABBA tracks in the coming weeks, and we'll kick off the solo Agnetha and Frida voyages soon as well. Cheers!
Also I set up a Patreon a little while back, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation (and getting a little bonus/behind-the-scenes content) can go here. / shnootz
And those who'd like to support the channel with a one-time donation can do so via PayPal, at billshattner@yahoo.com. Thanks!

after listening to Agnetha's new song
      maybe there, in that title,
there is an 'unconscious message' addressed to "Benny and Björn"
for ABBA to perform one more song
as they celebrate the 50th anniversary of their iconic Eurovision win

Me too! Not so much because of 'this is the last new song we'll ever get to hear', but because it is just so beautiful. I never ever cry/cried when I hear beautiful music but here, when the music swells after the first verse, I do get misty-eyed. Even now, after having heard it so often.

Fun fact about this one. Benny said he wrote the melody around 25 years ago, but he didn’t have any suitable outlet to release it, so he thought it would be right for ABBA.

Like the way old friends do, its an epic close to an album and a reflection on where we are politically.
Its a sumptuous feast that lets you map your own feelings towards freedom onto it. The delicate nature of the frredoms we have, are under constant realignments by well intentioned ( or not) people, but we must never forget the road to ruin is paved with good intentions.
I think Bjorn and Benny have been clever in that they are gentley goading the public to reconsider the blessings of the freedoms we have.

    What and amazing journey
three ABBA songs !!! and the last three ABBA songs!
and today is special to all ABBA fans
September 2 in 2021 was the live stream
    when ABBA premiered
I still have faith in You
    & Don't shut me down
    "Ode to Freedom" (2021)
    is an extraordinary ending
to what may be ABBA's extraordinary musical and group journey
it's seems at others ending tracks of albums, like
"Arrival" & "The way all friends do"
but now in ABBA orchestral tune, majestic!
I believe that the last thing ABBA has done
is to be aware of its Legacy and to be faithful to it,
to perpetuate it to the new generations
That is why I believe that this new album "Voyage",
    perhaps the last of ABBA,
is a trip to eternity in the history of music.
    In particular,
I feel that this song is sung by the four of them together from beginning to end,
    although Frida stands out strongly
in the lower tones and Agnetha appears as a beautiful second voice in the treble,
    the men do background voices
    Again, what a fantastic Journey
and will be more, with Agnetha & Frida
Thanks for all those greatest videos
My best regards to You, dear friend, from
    Buenos Aires , Argentina
    South America
    PS:
to think that this song, composed in 2021, in these contexts of Russia's invasion of Ukraine,
I think it was performed by Benny on the piano with a choir of Ukrainian singers who went to Sweden
(if my memory fails me and I'm wrong about something, please correct me)

One of the greatest ingredients of Abba's loyal longlasting love from their fans is their solid achievement to create emotional bonds with them. That's rare but if it happens in the degree they obtained it's deep and unbeatable. That's why there's nobody to touch them in their field.

To my ears, the track takes it's inspiration from two other pieces.
The waltz from Swan Lake which is in 3/4 time but the Abba one is in 4/4.
And the other is The Hebrew Slaves Chorus Va pensiero from Verdi's Nabucco .
I hear flavours of each in the ODE in different ways. Of course others may hear nothing of the sort.
The other thing of note is Agnetha floating an octave higher in the second verse. It's quite beautiful and probably not noticed.

My God, I cried when I heard Ode to Freedom. Even today I am very moved.
We might a little regret that Michael B. Tretow was not there to accentuate the chorus effect.
I saw here on UA-cam that Ode to Freedom is in MI - 582Hz, which according to my research is one of the DNA repair frequencies. The mathematician Vic Showell has demonstrated that there is a very precise link between the Golden ratio, the number Pi and the frequency 528. He affirms that the frequency 528, music of light, is the key to spiritual freedom. It’s perhaps no coincidence that this song is called “Ode to Freedom"...

What a wonderful song to end this voyage. It's sort of epic. And it's funny how your pre-listening words already echoed the gist of the song: freedom means so many different things to different people, so how on earth is it possible to write an ode to freedom. Bjorn made that rather personal by writing the lyrics: If I ever wrote my ode to freedom, being privileged and spoiled for choice, then I fear that you would be suspicious, of the cause to which I'd lend my voice. Gives the whole thing an extra edge.
It would be great, now that the main deep dive is over, if you could make a video wherein you sort of sum up the whole dive and what you think of the whole catalogue of ABBA songs. Maybe add some favourites, songs you have returned to, etc.
Either way, it's been a great 'voyage' from beginning to end, and I'm looking forward to you diving into the solo projects.

Despite Just a Notion (for obvious reasons) this song is for me the only one in the album that really captures the "old ABBA" way of doing songs. How they choose this piece so the voices perfectly fit the style with their age, a song that has a progressive melody, very different to the rest of their repertoire, and including a surprise with this cinematic orchestral arrangement.
I am not saying that the rest of the songs aren't good, they are great too, but what I felt with them is that some are like tributes and reminiscences to their classics, and other the evident stamp of Benny's later years with BAO. That's why for me Ode to Freedom is the only ABBA song that could fit in an album like The Visitors without being noticed that came from the future.

    Special comment of "Voyage" album
It's new to put in the right order, I"m still listening and discover new things
until now I put "Voyage" from the middle to the top
better than "The Visitors" & "Voulez Vous"
so good as "Super Trouper" & "ABBA"
only behind "The Album" & "Arrival "
    in my order
    1) Arrival & The Album
    2) ABBA , Super Trouper & Voyage
    3) Voulez Vous & The Visitors
    4) Ring Ring & Waterloo
    About the songs of "Voyage"
favourite song: "Don't shut me down"
(masterpiece! 10pts, in my Top5 of all ABBA songs)
    only a level bellow:
I still have faith in you
(so in my Top10 of all ABBA songs)
    another level bellow (9pts):
    Just a Notion
    Kep one eye on Dan
    another level bellow (8pts):
    When you danced with me
    No doubt about it
    Ode to Freedom
    another level bellow (7pts):
    Little things
    I can be that woman
    the last level (6pts)
    Bumblebee
but is a fantastic ABBA come back
more that what every one expected
    ABBA still have it in
    Thanks you for the music

Hello again Matt 😀 OMG your doing a TRIPLE 💥 you're spoiling us matt🎉
If you get the chance you must check out Eric Ericsons Chamber Choir singing this in front of a live audience that had the King and Queen of Sweden in attendance, ( they were also at the Premiere of ABBA "Voyage Concert" in London in 2022, Frida is a very close friend to the Swedish Royal Family, Frida married Heinrich Ruzzo Prinz of Germany, but he passed away in the late 90's at the age of 49 from cancer, 18 months earlier Frida's daughter from her first marriage was killed in a RTA in New York State, as you can imagine it was a very dark period for Frida and it took along time for her to recover from such tragedies) and Benny is on piano, its a stunning performance. Both versions brings a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes😢

Matt, do you have a copy of "ABBA Undeleted"? It's a medley of unfinished demos and studio snippets assembled by their engineer Michael B. Tretow (often called the 5th member of ABBA) in 1994 for their box set. You have to react to it! I can send it to you if need be.

It’s interesting how a song can sound so different depending on how you hear it. Your channel is mono - I listen with my Sennheiser wireless headphones - and yet Frida’s operatic vocal line is so prominent. When listening to the CD - on my AKG 702’s - I struggle to pick that vocal out, it’s so buried in the mix!
When doing the girls’ solo albums I do hope you’ll give Frida’s “Ensam” album a spin, some amazing vocal work on there 😎

Yo! So to be fair, my system does feature stereo sound. Indeed, left-right panning from one speaker to another or isolation in a single side can clearly be heard by me, in the room while listening; but I think the room-sound as recorded by my camera obscures that in the videos, given that it's essentially second-hand sound rather than direct-line.
Side note: since I face away from my speakers, the right channel is heard primarily by my left ear, and vice versa. Lol.
In any case, I do listen to songs I react to in headphones afterward, so after I finish shooting videos this morning (in an hour or so), I'll give this one another listen in headphones and pay attention to the mixing in that setting. Cheers, Darren!

@@mattsnider2667Oh I know you listen in stereo, you give very interesting observations on that (shimmering, etc!) Your output is mono is what I meant - not surprising really, seeing as you use the one mic. Anyhoo, I've always wondered what decks you have. I have an Audio Technica LP120 which looks similar to what's behind you. 😊

Matt you owe us at least 4 more songs
    1. Åh vilka tider
    2. Santa Rosa
    3. Medley Pick a bale of cotton/on top of old Smokey/Midnight special
    4. Dream world
In 1972 Bjorn and Benny released the album Lycka ( Happiness ) as a duet but some songs with Agnetha and Frida which lead to the idea of letting Agnetha and frida become the leading vocalists . Some songs are considered ABBA songs because the four sing together . With these we could complete a list of 10 songs left to be played before moving to “after ABBA” releases

@@mattsnider2667 that’s just Agnetha’s she composed it for a Swedish singer for the Melodiefestivalen , -the swedish Eurovision finals - and after her breakup with Bjorn , she decided to sing it on stage in English for the last tour inspired in Bee Gees music style , also one of their musician , son in law of the manager was on stage , but you’re right Benny’s son Ludvig who produced the ABBA Live Album included it and now it appeared as part of an ABBA album but it’s just a solo Live version , it’s not a proper ABBA recording so to speak , in that sense there is also the Get on the Carousel as a live recording that should have been released but since they used a bridge in Hole in Your Soul , it was discarded and it appears with good sound on their film ABBA the movie BUT I won’t complain should you to include it in the awaited recap . Frida‘s best album is the Swedish language one from 1996. Really cool tunes. Agnetha has lots of great songs - but also a lot of mediocre ones, imo. Her best album is „My Colouring Book“ from 2003. I feel like most producers didn’t „get“ what makes Agnetha‘s voice so unique. Benny and Björn got it. But in her solo work they overproduce her voice oftentimes.

You're absolutely right! Agnetha's solo work always sounds so inferior to her Abba work. So it is true then that a singer needs a producer who understands their voice and can make it sound really good. It's also why Frida's solo work is so amazing. Phil Collins sort of got it on the first one (though it really was a Phil Collins album on which Frida sang), her 'Shine' album allowed to make her voice shine much more, and like you said, her Djupa Andetag album is truly amazing.

its such a smooth symphonic ending which gives a feel of a ship (on see or in space) drifting off on their Voyage.
The strings remind me of some of the music from their Swedish Musical "Kristina från Duvemåla" (about Swedish emigrants to America), for which there are a few live perfomances by the original cast on UA-cam, such as this one: ua-cam.com/video/7xzZgeHYZ2s/v-deo.htmlsi=4y3hi206cjghBGGg
