I used to have a VHS tape of him explaining. He said when he got his first guitar at 10? or so, it came with a little paper on how to tune it, but he missed the 4th interval there and tuned it to all 5ths. The chords in the little chart sounded awful, so he looked closer and got it tuned right. But later he came back to that tuning and it has some real wonders. For one thing, not only can you slide any shape up or down the neck, you can move them across and still get the same kind of chord. : Then he tried the technique of turning the amp way up and just touching like you see here. : He also talked about composing, you play a little something then just listen and you'll probly hear a few more notes to put in there after those. That's all I remember.
Agree. Saw and heard of him for first time at Leimert Park Jazz Festival two days ago. I'm not a fan of the guitar and strumming, but his playing is mesmerizing and emotional.
Of course I would first discover this amazing human being .. at 1am ...when I was supposed to be sleeping hours ago.. now I need to listen to everything he's ever done before I rest now...🤣
Higher level of humankind? This is what you can achieve when you study, learn and appreciate. Kudos to this man's commitment and love of music. A beautiful performance, thank you.
Loved this guy since first hearing his Eleanor Rigby, way back when it was released. And lucky enough to see his Hendrix tour, which didnt have his usual playing style but was supreme.
Saw Stanley at Ram's Head On Stage in Annapolis about 20 years ago and was totally blown away by his performance. One of THE greatest musicians I've ever seen. He even played the guitar and the piano...at the same time!😲 Just a fabulous guitarist in so many ways, differently.👍
This suddenly reminded me of my dog that recently passed away because of how beautiful this performance was and just how beautiful my dog’s soul was and the joy he gave me as I took care of him, especially these past couple years during the pandemic. 😢
I know the feeling. My White Shepherd Daisy girl died 4 years ago. The day she died shattered me. A month later I adopted Raven, Aussie Cattle dog, Husky, Border Collie mix. Nothing like a dog that you adore and they adore you & the music you love.
I was lucky enough to see Stanley at the hight of his fame at Ronnie Scott's Birmingham over 25 years ago, it was absolute magic. I'm glad that Stanley found his true self, the venues may be smaller but the music is still beautiful. Mozart and Stanley are both true geniuses.
I've been a guitar player since the 90's. I've heard all kinds of techniques, including a lot of 2 handed finger tappers. But this, listening to this, with all that I've learned and heard, and seen over the decades. My brain is still trying to process it. I can't believe that I am hearing the instrument played like this.. It's like hearing Hendrix for the first time, but more.
Jordan was doing this in the early, early 80s; I remember seeing him busking on the street and knew I'd hear his name again. He deserves all the adulation he gets, one of the true originals. 🎉
I was fortunate enough to meet Mr Jordan in Sydney Australia ( at a TV performance ) back in the day, All these years later still can’t quite get my head around this magic….. A humble a genuine person as well…. It felt very weird playing “normal” guitar later that day, like I’d gone from playing top level chess to playing with oversized plastic toys in a sandbox…… 🙏
This is just incredible. I was looking for news of Stanley Jordan when I found this video. I wanted to see where his music was going. To see that he still practices his technique and brought it to such a high level... It just brought me to tears. Thank you for uploading this video and thank you Stanley Jordan for the music.
I saw him playing just outside central park in NYC maybe 30- 40 years ago. He was playing bass rhythm and lead all at the same time. A one man jazz band.
Por los aplausos tan “pálidos “, puedo entender que la audiencia no tuvo ni idea de lo que estaban apreciando y escuchando. Es una interpretación demasiado extraordinaria de una obra maestra clásica, como para no pararse y no dejar de aplaudir.
Just an under-the-radar guy these days, he made massive waves 30+ years ago for his style of play with the “tapping”. I’ve seen Stanley perform many times in various settings. He never settles, just keeps exploring.
i don't care how he chooses to present.. this is a childhood hero of mine in the music world. Jordan, you are doing something different.. not just doing but thinking differently. I am similar to others that first maybe saw you on a Bruce Willis film... folks with strings in their hands immediately took note. At the end here I want to I think just thank you and challenge the next set of generations to watch and learn from what you have produced here.
Effortless flair, virtuoso two handed tapping and a nice a cheeky bit of posy old Mozart to show off with. Gave me a big grin all the way through. I love brilliance!
Yes, he is absolutely AMAZING - and he has been doing this for a very long time. I see players like Yvette Young and Ichika Nito (both are incredible) doing great things with tapping and fingerpicking. Stanley Jordan was doing this back in the 80's! Your thumbnail looks pretty amazing too btw...
Nice, bonus of being a bff of his sister! Sure you didn’t know “who” he was for awhile after becoming bestie’s. One of mine turned me on to Stanley’s mind blowing musical talent in the late 80’s, early 90’s. RIP my dear old friend♥️
An absolute treasure! You are so gifted, yet humble and real. My favorite album, “Flying Home”, has sadly been out of print for decades. Thank you for your beautiful music, highly inspirational and original approach to the guitar. If you get back even half of what you’ve sent out into the world then you are truly a wealthy man.
Oh gosh. I saw Stanley so many years ago in Florida, but like the rest of us, he got older. But his appreciation and knowledge of music still brings tears to my eyes. Skill not withstanding.
Stanley's always astounding. I've been hacking away at the guitar for nearly 40 years. Admittedly I'm not the most dedicated or technically proficient in terms of skill or overall musical knowledge. Yet it seems more like I've been playing closer to 40 DAYS in comparison to such an ARTIST. He's in that rarified air with a small handful of true innovators on the instrument.
Ever since I saw and heard him play in the 80's, I still can't believe that he can do what he does on 6 strings. It's hard enough to play notes with just one hand... And everything he plays, and every style he plays, is done so musically. Not a wasted note in his playing. Amazing!
@@chrischoir3594 That’s not true at all. Maybe you just didn’t know about him. He’s world renown and not as an opening act. He did many shows where I lived as the headliner during his peak. He’s been out there since the early to mid 1980s and not as an opening act. He’s on tour right now as the headliner.
Why doesn’t every kid want to be Stanley Jordan and not some no talent rapper or noisy metal shredder hack? Is it his hair? Because he looked better in the 80’s with his Afro. He looked like a regular guy who could blow your mind and take music to new places. The world needs more Stanley Jordan
Amazing! I don’t know if everyone watching truly appreciates the challenge of making this sound good, he’s playing in F on an instrument that is presumably tuned to E as its lowest pitch, if any of those strings were to ring out unintentionally it would be extremely dissonant but he sounds so pure and controlled
I discovered Stanley in the late 80s at a little venue in Philadelphia called The Chestnut Cabaret, and got to watch him play from 15' away. We aaw a who's who of great guitarists there, from Allan Holdsworth to Al DiMeola, both Winters brothers, Joe Satriani...you get the idea. I could watch any of the others play, and understand what they were doing, even if I couldn't understand how they did it. But watching Stanley play and hearing what he played made me look for the tape player backstage. He's in a special class all by himself.
He's Exceptional how can we describe this talent his the master of all Master, that's phenomenon, purely God's gift!, what can I say just thanking God that I see this unexplainable Talent God bless you Jordan.
When I see things like this, I always wonder what the original artist, in this case, Mozart, would have to say if he saw this performance. Absolutely sublime, in my opinion.
Incredible and beautiful, just wished the staff would have shown a bit of respect and stayed seated for 8 minutes after all, they will never see or hear anything like this again in their lives...
He is the only person on the planet that can do this and that is amazing! Imagine being the ONLY person to be able to do something, it must be incredible. What a genius!
When SJ came onto the scene in the 80s, he was all serious players talked about. That young cat redefined what was possible with the instrument.
The fact that most people, including guitarists, don't know Stanley Jordan is a shame.
He ain’t Prince dude lol his fret board picking style could be argued he’s not exactly playing it 😂

Been listening to him since I was a teen in the 80s. Genius!
Yep. Saw him on Austin City Limits back when I was first learning and was blown away. 😊
He is the best in his style much better than the young ones who come in Great understanding of music
same
Same here 🤜🤛
Saw him live in 1985 and I’ve been tapping ever since. I do it on a double neck because it’s WAY easier. Hats off to you for changing my life Stanley.

I second that, here too
I have been listening to him for about 30 years…. Never gets old…
3:33am for me 😊
3.43 god dammit and working in 5 hours xD
Golf clap after a sublime performance. Stanley Jordan is in a league by himself.
Stanley Jordan and Alan Holdsworth were always two unique players, NOBODY sounded anything like them.
Well.....
I would like to add Shawn Lane...

Been a fan of Stanley since the 80’s, just a amazing player.🍻
He doesn’t get the credit for the pioneer in the 2 handed style he deserves.

I agree 🍻
for me, since a baby lol. was born in 86. My dad was a jazz guitar buff
Sometimes we see a human be something more than the rest of us, and it feels good to witness the greatness of being.
Genius hits a target no one can see. Breathtaking
Genius. To transcribe Mozart like this is awe-inspiring. Stanley brings great feeling into the piece too. What a great artist.
Wow. How this guy isn't more of a household name is beyond me. This was truly wonderful!
Discovering this bloke was a true OMG! moment.
Stunning musician.
There’s a tenderness captured that only Mozart could create and is coaxed out of that electric guitar by this genius.
this should be 36 million views, all guitar and bass players

I'm glad he's still playing. I saw him with Mike Hedges in the late 80s. Great player.
