When SJ came onto the scene in the 80s, he was all serious players talked about. That young cat redefined what was possible with the instrument.

I used to have a VHS tape of him explaining. He said when he got his first guitar at 10? or so, it came with a little paper on how to tune it, but he missed the 4th interval there and tuned it to all 5ths. The chords in the little chart sounded awful, so he looked closer and got it tuned right. But later he came back to that tuning and it has some real wonders. For one thing, not only can you slide any shape up or down the neck, you can move them across and still get the same kind of chord.
: Then he tried the technique of turning the amp way up and just touching like you see here.
: He also talked about composing, you play a little something then just listen and you'll probly hear a few more notes to put in there after those. That's all I remember.

But this, listening to this, with all that I've learned and heard, and seen over the decades. My brain is still trying to process it. We aaw a who's who of great guitarists there, from Allan Holdsworth to Al DiMeola, both Winters brothers, Joe Satriani...you get the idea. I could watch any of the others play, and understand what they were doing, even if I couldn't understand how they did it. But watching Stanley play and hearing what he played made me look for the tape player backstage. He's in a special class all by himself.
