We had the opportunity to interview a member from a popular Final Fantasy 14 Facebook group. We got interesting closure to a developing story from the post they made and nerded out about FFXIV.

UPDATE 3/4: A lot has happened since my original post, and there has been resolution. A friend in this group has posted a video which I am very appreciative for the chance to talk more in detail and there was a positive outcome on many topics. So I feel it's right to now close the comments for this thread and let that interview speak for itself. Thank you everyone 💜💜

So, I'm rather disappointed this evening, honestly just really sad, maybe angry.
One of my closest friends, whom I've expressed my love for XIV, after months of taking about it with, seemed really excited about finally being able to join me during the XBOX beta since that's all he plays on. But when he and some other friends came over to just hangout, he said he forgot his Xbox. "Aw, next time maybe," I tried to just brush it off...
Sometime during the night after a few drinks, another person in our group mentioned another game that came out recently with mass popularity, and my friend said, "I'd rather play that than FF14, because it's grittier and darker, which is what I like FF14 looks to pretty and shiny, it's not grim enough." It stung, like in the moment REALLY hurt. But I just kept my mouth shut, because the game they mentioned IS good, and I'm not here to bash on other games.
What I'm most hurt over is that I feel like I've been led on for months, thinking that we'd finally be playing together. The night as we'd planned, was set around getting them familiar with the world, setting up there UI, running their first few duties, and introducing them to this incredible community. Now, it just all seemed like they intentionally forgot their console because they were afraid to tell me from the beginning that they just didn't want to play. I get that though; not everyone is going to like what I like. But why make plans with me, casually act like you forgot, then drop comments like that with me sitting three feet from you? I don't think they realized what they said hurt me so much. I dropped the conversation and just shut down intellectually for the rest of the night until they all left.
I think I'm just going to give up now. Everyone I tell, friends or family, about this game, they just don't seem interested in the end. I'm fine running solo, and occasionally make new friends at random in-game; I've been doing it for 4yrs now. But it's so infrequent. Really, I think I'm done. I don't want to keep getting my hopes up, and thinking the people closest to me who feign interest would have bothered giving XIV a chance. Hearing someone say FF14 doesn't have dark themes breaks my brain. There are plenty of moments in this game where I was like, whoa.. that's a lil much, how you gonna just put that out there like that with no warning?! Actual shock that they went there, that far, and just smacked this raw emotion on the table and left us to deal with it and figure it out for ourselves. I'm not sure I'll ever have a friend that appreciates FF14 as much as my partner and I do, but Endwalker solved my wanting to unalive myself problem and had me hard swing into wanting to attain immortality so anyone that doesn't give this game a chance, their loss. :P
Endwalker was AMAZING still working our way through post and I love that the game could do that for you!

Final Fantasy in general is dark. It's weird ppl have this take on xiv or final fantasy not being dark or gritty enough.
I remember a Streamer walking up to a random old lady NPC in Stormblood. Making fun of her sweeping the floor while it rained. However when he talked to her, her voiceline went along the lines of "Surely my son will soon return from the war."

The current state of play for me and my friend has been nothing but positive, and its so wonderful to see a new journey blossoming 🌺
I remember being in that boat with my wife. She was big into Runescape for a long time there, so I knew MMOs weren't totally outside her interests, and I kept trying to get her to try FFXIV to no avail. I gave up for a while, but eventually she let it drop her big turnoff was playing mouse and keyboard. I explained that there was a controller option, got her set-up using way too many macros (she's gradually weened off them), and now I have to argue with her about why Alphinaud is a terrible name for a dog (every time you tell people his name they'll say "what was that?", spelling will be a nightmare, you'll always have to explain why you named him that).
p.s. I lost the dog naming argument and we now own an Alphinaud, and all the things I was worried about with that name totally panned out...
Last year my mother and I adopted a 2 year old tuxedo male cat andI named him Aymeric. I was always asked where I gotten it and tell them from ffxiv. They liked it and so has the cat. So now I have an Aymeric who lays on me at night and gives me kisses, or sticks his nose up my nose.
My next dog will be named Estinien and I will not compromise!
None of my irl friends stuck with the game past ARR, so I can relate.
ARR can feel like a hurdle for sure. But after seeing the documentaries covering what FF14 was before ARR...
I remember the post and it's definitely something i understand as my friends dont want to play it or tried a bit but never really tried. It sucks but it wont stop me enjoying with my xiv friends
In game friends know me better than irl friends.

@BabyGhoul97 my irl friends are great they just have an aversion to committing to it so eh, they know me better than anyone.
It's difficult to talk about how dark XIV goes, but one line in particular in the game really gets me so hopefully posting it out of context doesn't spoil much... but... a certain character says:
"death, we learned, isn't truly the end. It's merely a part of the cycle of rebirth. True salvation lies not in death, but in not being born." (said villain delivers that line in quite a calm and relaxed tone of voice, without a hint of malice in the sound of their voice which makes it creepy AF. Like literally everything the villain says in that area is delivered in a soft voice that almost sounds _caring_ if said villain weren't talking about literally ending the whole world and making sure that nothing can live ever again).
Most villains want to just destroy the world or kill everybody. *THIS* villain wants to go even further than that, and make sure that _nobody_ can be reincarnated, _ever again._
I can't think of a darker goal.

I honestly have trouble deciding if Shadowbringers or Endwalker is darker! But they were both so freaking good!!
I tried to get my sisters to play FF14. One of them just doesn't have the attention span to play long video games in general. My other sister however has played all the way to the current patch.

@@GhoulxGhoul seriouslt, Shadowbringer’s trials and normal raids NEED to be MSQ required! Same with EW’s Alliance Raid! And throw Alexander in while we’re at it since it’s technically why ShB is even able to happen at all!
Yeah that totally sounds like something “someone that only plays games on Xbox” would say. The only people that can be forgiven for liking Xbox are children because they can’t help what their parents buy for them. Then again, recommending an MMORPG to someone is like offering someone heroin so they can’t help but be cautious.

ARR 2.0 is pretty much a shonen anime like Dragon Ball Z or Bleach; very paint by numbers. But the patches leading to Heavensward goes George R R Martin Real fucking fast.
I'm on episode 688 of One Piece. It took me 2 years to get to episode 150 and the rest was all over Christmas and this last month.
The best things need a world built to support them! I'm convinced!!

That post really feels of that one friend who keeps droning on about this one game they can't stop bringing up and keep trying to push it but they are your friend so you try to just go along with it but they don't want to understand you are really not interested and it's kinda weird how serious and personal they take the game.
Why would anyone be hurt by someone saying they like something that looks more grim than your anime game where almost everyone plays catgirls and goes clubbing? Are you hurt if someone doesn't like the same ice cream flavour you do? If someone has a different favorite colour?
That's the kind of behaviour that puts people off the game. I love FFXIV, the lore and setting and some of the story, but the community is one of the worst things about it. Almost as bad as WoW but at least WoW people don't get hurt when you don't like their game, heck they often even agree.
I value honesty in my friendships and holding back your opinion on something when we are supposed to be friends never feels good.
Do not guard your friend from your truth! A good delivery and a well thought out answer will preserve the friendship. Don't feign interest!

that's true.
SA and grape and also other brutal stuff (This appears in 2 ARR dungeons one early and one later)
prostitution (can be seen in upper limsa where there's npcs planning to have some alone time with females)
warcrimes (literally 99.5% of the time we met the garleans)
mass genocides of populations (garleans doing the funs)
insane kings who would murder their entire civilian population just because someone sneezed at them. (mentioned in later story and can be found online)
burying of dead bodies which depending on the size took longer (arr)
literally places being named after people being punished (such as the case in ul'dah one of the stairs up to the city)
and so much more.
I do not understand the logic of people saying ffxiv isn't dark. okay the graphics aren't so dark and the overall story is happy and kinda soft and not so brutal but it has the moments where it brings you into the deep darkness.
yep ffxiv doesn't have dark themes at all. it's a walk on a flowery field with the sun and nothing bad at all.
FFXIV doesn't follow any rules or believe in too far. Yet they still do it I'm a way that's respectable. They present you a complete world that we believe could be real because it mirrors our own.
The game story has dark moments but unfortunately your so over powered and Mary Sue in 90% of the story content I never feel threatened in the slightest other than shadowbringers. No main party mates EVER die making it a total joke when they die you know 2 seconds later they will be back. I didn't like endwalker in the slightest I think it's got a weak series of villians both zeno, the imperials, and emo girl fail to be interesting or threatening they were mostly boring honestly.
