      My golf coach told me to do the flared foot thing and weight on back foot which brings your leading foot off the ground a bit on the back stroke and change weight to leading foot as your swing comes forward. Loose wrists as well. I am 70, a bit stiff and only took up golf a couple of years ago. This really works for me

    I thought the Matt Kuchar part was cool but kinda funny because he actually did change to his one-plane swing to sacrifice power for accuracy when he was younger due to inconsistencies when trying to swing too fast. I do think the high disconnected hands is a more advanced technique but if someone is a mid-low handicap who's getting up there in age it may help for keeping up with the young guns if they can keep the same consistency.

    👍👍 Definitely a shortage of videos out there for golfers over 50 that aren't directed at high handicap seniors. Do a search on YT and almost every one deals with coming over the top and how to fix a slice. Frustrating. You are one of the few vloggers that covers more general subjects for all aging golfers, especially simple ways to gain clubhead speed . You should start a series specifically for that. Lot of potential views being left in cyberspace.

      There is a widespread perception that old golfers didn’t take up the game until they retired and moved to the Villages. Actually, most older golfers once played to a good standard and aren’t interested in becoming short game gurus as they age. My experience with younger instructors (why are they all young?) is that they don’t understand the effects of aging on the body. It’s difficult until it actually happens to you. Anyways, I appreciate Clay making a serious effort to address my demographic and his advice is spot on.

    Actually moving up to the more forward tees in a great idea for seniors or anyone that doesn't hit far (kids, some ladies...), not only because it is shorter and gives you a much better chance at a par on every hole, but also because sometimes it takes hazards out of play (such as water), or makes the hazard not as bad (going across the edge of a body of water instead of directly over the middle of it for example). Take advantage of those different tee areas. The course and slope rating of them are such that they will work into your handicap. However if you want, you can use your own MUCH simpler handicap system if you just play yourself for fun. I would take my score (let's say I shot 106), and take the difference from par for the course (let's say 70), and use that 36 shot difference to make the par 3s par 5s, the par 4s would be par 6s, and the par 5s would be par 7s. Then I just try to shoot par (106 actual, 70 with my handicap system). As you improve, then you will get less help. For example if you shoot a 100, then maybe the next round at that same course, only give yourself 30 additional strokes. Eventually you might get it down to 1 stroke per hole handicap (you will shoot an 88 on a par 70 course). Those numbers are more realistic for an occasional amateur golfer. Someone hitting the ball 300 yards doesn't help the average golfer much. Hitting the drives far is way down on the list of problems of a high handicap golfer. Hitting the greens for approach shots is where they suffer the most I think. Lessons on how to hit greens from 150 yards and in would likely help them the most and also how to recover from bad shots.

    Currently on my third artificial hip on right side due to an accident years ago. I am a righty and only 56. I do exactly as you describe on the feet flared out. I also take a half step back with the right foot just prior to my backswing. I set up just as you show, double flared feet, then a half step back with right foot and swing. Only way I can get rotation. And I still don’t hit it over 230, in fact quite happy with 230 on the short grass! Good video. Thanks.

    Clay, I played golf my whole life. I'm now 60 years old and due to arthritis I have a lot of pain when I create that big swing. Do you have any suggestions for getting the power without hurting yourself? Your instructions and help me really improve my golf game.

      I would just try to free up your body as much as you can. Don't restrict yourself. Flare your feet out at address. Let the lead heel come off the ground. Raise the arms. None of this should be painful under normal circumstances but if you have arthritis then there isn't a lot you can do to avoid the pain. Hope you live somewhere that isn't humid. Play well! I’m 76 and have had rheumatoid arthritis for about 30 years. In addition to a biologic, my doc put me on a med called Tramadol about 10 years ago. He said that the risk of becoming sedentary was worse than the effects of the med ... at least for me. It has allowed me to continue enjoying golf and benefiting from great golf instruction well into the back nine of lfe 😎

  • @Whatever-qr1li
    @Whatever-qr1li 3 роки тому +1

    I’ve 76, been playing off and on for more than six decades. From the senior tees I still play to an 8 HCP. This is not because of any geriatric short game wizardry but because I can drive the ball high and in the 220-240 range. A few years ago I changed my swing to one upright and dominated by arms in order to hang onto distance. As you get older, the advice Clay offers is the only way to achieve distance, as the body just gets too slow and stiff. Even with 20 years of yoga I have turned into an inflexible old guy. The tradeoff is a loss of consistency. One day I shoot 75, a week later it’s an 83.

    Another great video 👍🏻 What about SMASH FACTOR. Can you do a video on how to increase Smash Factor. I understand increasing club head speed results in greater distance, but there's probably a maximum (club head speed) that anyone can achieve. How to we get the most BALL SPEED (e.g. Smash Factor) with whatever club head speed we have. Is it merely a matter of hitting the center of the clubface, or are there other things we can do?

    • @TopSpeedGolf
      @TopSpeedGolf  4 роки тому

      Hi Mike, it's basically just hitting it in the center and with as much club head speed as you can. The biggest smash factor you can get with a driver is about 1.5. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

    • @davidjames1684
      @davidjames1684 4 роки тому

      @Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard - I don't think that is true. If you had a super heavy driver and/or one with a "hot" face (high C.O.R.), you can likely get significantly (10+%) higher (1.65 for example). You didn't say with an approved for play driver. Swing a hot faced heavy club 100 MPH and I bet the ball will jump off at about 165 MPH for a smash factor of 1.65. It is roughly analogous to using a heavy bat for softball or baseball in that you don't have to get the bat moving as fast to get good power. I use a heavy bat for homerun derby for example and I beat my "ripped" nephew who is half my age and same weight as me. My swing is better than his too.

    • @MPerski
      @MPerski 4 роки тому

      David James So how do you get faster bat speed with a heavier bat? I agree with you, but...
      Golf shafts are getting lighter to increase club head speed (heavier usually means slower), so how do you increase speed if heavier? 🤔

    • @davidjames1684
      @davidjames1684 4 роки тому

      @Mike Perski - a heavy bat/club will slow down, but have a higher smash factor because of the higher mass (assuming everything else is roughly equal). Think about it, if lighter was always better for distance, then why don't homerun derby contestants use plastic wiffle ball bats? The reason is rather obvious... our bodies can only move so fast, even with no bat/club in our hands. We need enough mass in the bat/club to get power, without significantly slowing down the swing. That translates into good power. How heavy depends on a lot of factors and I don't know the optimal formula. When I play homerun derby, I tend to use the heavy bat (31 oz) while I am "fresh" (the first bucket/inning), but as I get tired but more limbered up, I switch to a lighter bat (23 oz). That seems to work well for me.
      I have a challenge for Clay... take his normal driver and swing about 90% (or however hard he swings to get those 300 yard drives). Do about 10 of these and record the average ball speed. Next, add lead weight to that driver so that it goes from what it was (say D3 swingweight) to maybe E3 and after a few practice hits to get used to the extra weight, go ahead and hit 10 of those and also get a ball speed average. I suspect the club head will slow down with "E3" but the average ball speed will remain similar to the "D3" average ball speed. A better test might be to go a little under his nornal swingweight for the lighter club but a little heavier swingweight for the heavier club. For example, if he normally uses a D3, maybe go C8 for the lighter and D8 for the heavier.
      I think Rory McIlroy uses a heavy swingweight driver, yet he does quite well for distance with it.

    @Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard Just like I figured / expected. I asked this person (Clay) if he could use me as a "test subject" to see if what he is "preaching" here really works. I offered to be a "guinea pig" to see if he can add 16 MPH to my approx 100 MPH driver swing. I even offered to sign a waiver that if I injure myself at his "clinic", I am fully responsible. So far (it has been about a week), no offer from anyone there to me. What does that tell you people? I can swing a club in the air as fast as I can (let's say it is 100 MPH). How then would setting up to the ball properly and having a good "compression angle" make ANY difference? If anything it will slow me down because then I actually have to hit the ball as opposed to just swinging as hard as I can "in the air". I am reading about a 9 out of 10 on my BS meter on this one (10 = total BS).
    People, if your drives don't go far enough, just move up to the next nearer tees. A 400 yard par 4 might then only be 380 yards (reachable in 2 by most average golfers). I swing my driver 100 MPH and I still have a lot of trouble getting on the green in 2 on par 4s. I don't have an established handicap but I am sure it would be 20 or more. With your handicap (let's say 18 so 1 stroke per hole so a par 4 effectively becomes a par 5 for you), you should be at a distance where you can get on in 3 (for a real par 4 which is an effective par 5 for you), about 50% of the time. Just a rule of thumb. That way you will be on in "handicap regulation" 50% of the time, and have a 2 put for your handicap par on that hole (but sometimes you might get a birdie). That makes golf fun when you have a 50% chance of a handicap par and a 50% chance of something else.

    • @davidjames1684

      @Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard - That is not totally true... If my distance got so short that even the forwardmost tees were too long, I could just change to a shorter course. They are not all the same distance. I can almost guarantee you that your clinic will NEVER get 16 more MPH out of my swing. There is no logical way it can. My body will only go so fast and I don't want to train for a year just to be able to swing faster and possibly injure my body.

    • @gimbalair
      @gimbalair 4 роки тому +1

      David James straight can mean straight left or straight right as oppose to down the middle! I hit the ball dead straight, seldom does it find the middle of a fairway but it doesn’t hook or fade. But I know what you are saying.

    • @davidjames1684
      @davidjames1684 4 роки тому

      @andy wallace - I think you meant to say draw or fade. Also, what good is hitting the ball straight if it is off the target line? Perhaps if you are trying to win a straight hitting contest but you would need some fancy tracker to check that. Hitting the ball "dead straight" is also a way to lose distance. A nice draw usually rolls out farther than a straight ball so a well placed draw should outdistance a straight ball overall (carry + roll).

      @davidjames1684 4 роки тому

      @Mike Jones - I am waiting for TSG to accept my challenge to add 16 MPH to my swing thru technique and training. I don't see how that can happen and so far, they have not informed me of any acceptance so what does that tell you about their confidence level? No acceptance = a high reading on my BS meter. Chill out Mike Jones... have a Corona beer. I am giving TSG a chance to prove to me what they are saying is true. The reason I suspect it wont work is because many golfers are already doing many of the things he said. I could just go somewhere that can check my clubhead speed, spend about 10 minutes trying different swings, and just pick the one that has the highest speed, but what did that gain me? MORE important than swing speed is good ball striking. Use homerun derby as an analogy. Those guys pretty much swing the same speed for each attempt, yet only some go over the fence. The reason is better contact on those. A better lesson would be how to hit the driver such that you hit the sweet spot MUCH more often. I suspect the average golfer would prefer a consistent 225 yards in the fairway (not swinging 100%), vs. a range of 200 to 250 but wild / unpredictable from swinging "too hard". What good is getting 20 to 25 more yards if it only happens occasionally? Maybe it is fine for team better/best ball format, but for individual play, I would want the 225 "down the middle" each time ideally so I have enough energy to finish all 18 holes without getting too tired. That is what the title of his next instruction video should be... "How golfers can hit the fairways way more often swinging 75% with proper technique".

  • @davidjames1684
    @davidjames1684 4 роки тому +1

    @Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard - Your title is "Best Driver Swing for Senior Golfers", yet I didn't hear you mention anything about how old people have stiff muscles, limited range of motion, low stamina... yet you are giving instruction as if they were healthy like a 30 year old. Do you expect a senior golfer to go out and have a swing like yours? They are lucky if they can hit half a bucket of balls on the range before needing a 3 hour nap. This is exactly why they have the forward tees for seniors (or anyone that hits shorter than the average golfer). It is so those people have a reasonable chance at getting par without having to hole out from 100 yards (if they had teed off from the back tees on par 4s and 5s). My swing speed slowed down over the past 10 years which is normal since my body is protecting itself. I just moved up to the nearer tee box to compensate. No practice, no drills, no extra money for lessons, no delays... DONE! I'm off to the golf course.

That is why you have to make some adjustments like what were talked about in the video. You can certainly move to the next closest tee but where does it end? Golf is just more fun and easier to play when you hit it further. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

      @Top Speed Golf - Clay Ballard - It ends when you get to the forwardmost red tees. That is what my dad used to do since he could only drive it about 160 yards, yet I witnessed him get an eagle 2 on a par (he hit somewhere around 280 yards total for those 2 shots). Golf is easier to play when you move forward, not when you hit it farther. Hitting it long takes power and that saps energy out of old people that don't have much to begin with. I bet if Clay had coached my dad, you would NEVER get him to hit 200 yards. I can almost guarantee that.

    Looks nothing like a senior swing to me.

    We don't really know if that machine is accurate for this video. It could be biased by 5% or 10% and we wouldn't have a way of knowing that.

      Hi David, you're exactly right. We could mess with the elevation numbers and make the ball fly further. I haven't ever messed with it but I believe the default on FlightScope is 500 ft which really wouldn't jack up the numbers and it about where we are at in Florida. You can choose to believe what you want. Not much I can do about it. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor

      @Top Speed Golf - How about let me try it cuz I know how far I hit and how fast I swing. I am closeby. If you convince me it is accurate then I see Clay hit a few without you tinkering with the machine, then I might be convinced it is accurate for him too.
