Just ordered one, price dropped on Banggood to 105 EUR with shipping in Europe, which I thought was a steal 😊 Thanks again for all your videos!
Nice one!
Mine is in the mail Looks like great plane.
I would try it with a 1300mah pack, the lighter battery works wonders for the ASW28.
Looks like it could glide forever ;-) Nice flight demonstration and CG testing. See you in the Air!
Great looking and stable flying plane. All of these styles of planes are nice to fly, like the Bixler and the famous AXN Floater Jet, speaking of which, the newly released AXN , any chance you are doing a review of the H-King Floater?
Never flown a Floater Jet. I should
Thanks Andrew for video. Beautiful glider . Thanks for the tips too mate.Cheers
The only trouble i find watching the clips is a good part is wasted as its out of site, if its flown closer would be better! Keep up good work! 👍👍
Another awesome video, thanks for showing just how far back you can have the CG on that plane, makes me question if I can get better performance from my gliders by paying more attention to that. I usually set it on the marks and if I have a successful flight I continue with that setting. But I'm getting the sense that the more you can get to that sensitive spot where the CG is just ahead of too far aft, the better it glides. Is that accurate in your opinion?
The factory marks are rarely correct for best gliding performance
im running 4s, 1450kv D3536/5 , 8x6gemfan prop, 70amp esc (with separate bec for radio/servos running straight off battery just in case of esc fail)
it cooks! its about 45 amps, 700watts
Woah! That's a beast
Great flights. You certainly show what these things can do in a capable person's hands.
I think you could fly it with the battery hanging off the horizonal stabilizer. lol really though, it looks like you just put the batt in any oh how and it will be fine.what a great plane. cheers!
maybe this shows on sailplanes the c/g is more forgiving than say an EDF jet .you really cant be flying a jet if its tail-heavy.
Oh yes, these gliders can have the CG way back
Great always wanted to see how this flys. I want to get one but might have difficulties putting it together I’m new to the flying hobby .
It Just Snaps Together & A Couple Of Screws... Less Than 5mins To Assembly & Takes Longer To Charge Battery... ;~)P
@@allenmoore9848 Nice to see my group getting a plug, also on facebook
G@@D One Mate! Thanks
Just getting into this hobby, thanks for posting
No problem 👍
Nice little glider. I'm starting a new thermaling machine tomorrow, I've got the frsky vario reciever I'm itching to try out.
This looks like a nice glider.I had the Volantex 1600 a few years ago, I seem to remember the stock motor was underpowered for the model, and it struggled to fly? Do I recall correctly? I need to buy a nice glider, I got a beefy motor from my FTX Bugsta here could use that in any future glider purchase.
I never had the original motor on the 1600, mine was always a pure sloper
Great video! Thanks for sharing this video review! Interesting and informative video! Just grabbed up a kit!
Great little glider
Andrew Newton I crashed my HobbyZone Conscendo and purchased the Phoenix as a replacement kit plane and plan on installation of the electronic from the Conscendo.
Andrew are there any planes that you have that aren't beautiful to fly, They all seem so we behaved in your hands. I think it's just that you've become such an brilliant pilot and builder!
Not afraid to mod them until they fly well I guess.
Andrew, great vid as alwasy, love your reviews, builds & flight testing. Would you recommend this or the bigger Volantex Pheonix 2000 V2?
Yes Phoenix 2000 V2 is one of my favourites.
Thanks
Thanks to you. Great bargain on the Phoenix S
Glide slope getting shallower each time you moved it back a bit...Kopilot candidate if you were to start doing some serious altitude thermal soaring...
Never used RTH on a glider but I like the idea
@@AndrewNewton I have iNAV in my Phoenix 2000....Works a treat.
very interesting video, when i did my maiden i felt i had cg a bit tail heavy and had a little mishap but aybe that was just down to lack of skills on my part, i fly mine with 3s but 30amp esc and N2830 1000kv motor
That's odd, difficult to get the CG too far back
Hermoso vuelo muy suave 😎😎🤪
Yes it is a suave flier
I finally grabbed the kit version of this one on a Banggood sale for AU$116! Now to dig through the spares box to find servos, motor and ESC. It looks nice and relaxing with that motor and 2S so I'll pick something similar.
Nice one Colin. I'll be interested in which motor fits. I have been asked for recommendations often but don't know what suits.
@@AndrewNewton I chose a N2830/1000KV paired with a 40A ESC. Motor is about $20 on eBay.
Hi Andrew, thanks for the video, I have a newbie question for you..on this plane isnt better a 3s motor with another esc..i have tried at workbench this plane stock and the motor doesnt seem so powerful...greetings from Italy😎
Yes a more powerful lower rev motor would suit the big prop.
@@AndrewNewton ok , i m looking fora 2830 1000kv..but i see that (on the stock)the shaft is inverted..and 4mm maybe..any suggest abouti it..? Thanks
Does it pitch up with throttle like the older version, is there a way to overcome this without adding elevator /throttle mix ?
That usually requires some down-thrust built into the motor mount. Very few commercially built motor-gliders seem to have this. Any comments Andrew?
Not so much with this model. As ST said it's probably thrust angle on other gliders. The Radian is a shocker for pitching up under power.
GOOD video, what is your personal opinion about this plane? does it any serious problem? I like it . Thanks
Excellent glider, but prop is sized for 2S not 3S power
ok,thanks.@@AndrewNewton
Are there replacement wings for this particular model? I have not been able to find them.. Great video 👍
only the 2000 ones it looks like on banggood
@@hygrometer thx for the info...those were the only ones I could find as well
Only the 2m wings
@@AndrewNewton thk u sir
Thenks.bravo
Factory CG ref datum would be conservative for the obvious 'Gumby friendly flyer OOTB' reason. Still, helpful to know from your shared experimental testing that an aft of datum CG is fine, undoubtedly preferred by flyers with experience. Enjoyed the vid.
Many thanks, I think you will enjoy this one.
Good day sir. First off I would like to thank you for your good work, I have made 2 purchases largely because of your recommendations, namely the DW Eagle and now this Phoenix, and both are excellent and joy to fly. Now once again Im need of your good advise. What would be better change my propeller to a 9x6 for 3s? Or stick with the stock propeller for 2s? Thanks again
I stuck with the stock prop and 2S. Works nicely with that combo. If you dont have any 2S batteries then 3S and the 9x6 would be good
Nice. Looking forward to receiving mine and getting it into the sky with the PNP supplied motor, ESC and 10x6 prop. Already have a new 1800mAh 2S Turnigy Nano-Tech LiPo en-route as I type purchased last week for a different electric sailplane project which has been sat on the shelf in box a while (now a concurrent build), which will be perfect for this too.
Nice 👍
Just began learning about sailplanes...is there an advantage to moving the CG rearward? Or are we simply testing forgiveness here?

Hi Andrew thanks for the info, would you recommend this or something more like the skysurfer X8 for a relative beginner, I have a nanotalon which I can fly in stability mode, but looking for something that I can launch and fly easily at a park LOS. Thanks!
Equal I would say. X8 is a pusher so crashes dont ruin the motor, but the PhoenixS is more of a glider.
I have the previous model, it is my favourite of my 22 planes and probably the cheapest. Is the new version a worthwhile improvement/investment?
Not a big performance change so you probably don't need both
Hi Andrew,
Whats the model-name of the yellow small camera that you are using?
Yellow? I use yellow tape to hold the Mobius C2 and ZOHD VC400 FPV on the plane. Or I have a yellow Firefly Q6 but rarely use it.
Do can this plane use 4000mAh 3S?
Yes
i dont get it you all use 2200mah or less battery i had to use 4200mah to get the cg to spec ?
What CG are you trying to get to? It flies best as a glider on 85mm
@@AndrewNewton i was aiming for the recomended 70mm as in the manual . i will try a more aft cg gradually and see how that goes . i am also wodering do u use differential and camber settings ?
This would work great with the freaky grx8 receiver, how do you think it would go with Fpv as well
Do you have rssi dropouts on the grx8? I have two that have issues in my Taranis
Nick Marangelis I haven’t tried mine yet it’s still in its box, I would get in contact with frsky and see if they will send you a replacement.
I haven't noticed any problems Nick. I'll pay more attention next flight
You're brave Sir Andrew.
Brave or stupid, a fine line
what do you think is the best CG for a safe flight
Difficult to make it unsafe really but 75 is a good starting spot then try further back for better gliding.
@@AndrewNewton Thank you for your response and continue to delight us with your videos
I want this one!..:)
Yes you need it
so which motor is in this one? i have the regular one and no matter what cooling mods and down propping i do it always runs hot on 3s 2200... i think i am running a 28-35 1400 kv g force in this latest version...
Mine is the RTF. Prop is too big for 3S. This is definitely a 2S plane
