most likely the same as the default model. there is this thing you can do in 3D graphics called "shape keys". basically, you can "morph" a models polygons to seperate shapes and forms on the fly. this technique is most commonly used in videogames for character creators to allow the player freedom to change the look of the character without having to do 3D modelling. its also used a lot in CG for doing complex facial exprecions that just using an animation rig wound not be able to achieve.
@@AlienXtream1 While that is true you never see Banjo Warping between Fat and Thin and Shapekeying has its own issues with rigging, i suspect that Fat banjo is a independent model from normal banjo. It would make more sense then contesting with shapekeying, when simply swapping the model out is easier and lets you design fat banjo for rigging from the ground up.
Kazooie is in the E3 June 1997 footage of Banjo Kazooie, which was shown 5 months before Diddy Kong Racing released in November. She was created well over a year before Diddy Kong Racing released, because shes also in 1996 Banjo prototypes.
Banjo’s design always slightly bothered me, if only for one reason: his nose bends upwards, in front of his eyeballs. Meaning that his field of view would be pretty much blocked by his big ol’ bear snoot. :/ Maybe when he’s moving it’s Kazooie who’s actually whispering directions to him while he just stares at his nose. XD

@Nebula nɛbjʊlə You do have kind of a point there. From what I've heard Nuts and Bolts was originally conceived as a racer, but became a platformer later on with a focus on vehicle creation and use. However, Ex-Rare employees did show off models created for a Banjo-Kazooie X-Box remaster before Nut and Bolts came to be and it did use Nuts and Bolt's artstyle. I guess there's evidence for both points there.
If you look more closely at the Banjo model during the opening titles, you'll notice there's quite a few areas where there's extra detail going on rather than just the hands. The toes are individually modelled as well, rather than just a texture, and there's more polygons for the fur transition from legs to feet, and that's just what I'm noticing at a glance.
13:31 I think the overal Nuts & Bolts aesthetic was designed back in like, 2004, back when Banjo X was in development; It was to be a remake of the first game, in the same vein as Conker: Live and Reloaded, with altered things like a giant termite coming out of Ticker's tower in Mumbo's Mountain. Early development footage shows an animation of Congo in the N&B style. Eventually the remake idea was scrapped and a few other ideas were tossed around, until it was all decidedly merged into the final thing we all know today. Whether or not the final Nuts & Bolts concept was conceived in time for E3 2006, I dunno; All that was shown was a barebones fully animated teaser with barely a lick of what to expect, 'cept for the designs of the title characters.
I can't thumb this up enough! Banjo-Kazooie was the first video game I ever played! I loved that you covered Banjo's appearance in Diddy Kong Racing too! I like those kind of videos. Although old, they are very helpful for me. I am currently doing a fan art for one content creator, that makes videos about nostalgic things. So I decided to make that fan art, in form of simple, square, thin cardboard CD case, that you would get in one of the old gaming magazines, for a fake game starring that creator's original character. I painted the case, but I also need screenshots from fake game for the back. So I decided to make those false screenshots in Blender, in the style of game from 2005-2006, but I could not find any reference to how much polygons and how "blocky" game from that time period could be, and also at what resolutions, more or less, textures could be made. So your model analysis videos helped a lot.
Best series ever on this channel, especially for a 3d artist, this is pure gold research material. Looking forward to the Super Smash Bros evolution episode. Keep up the good work
At 17:43 I think the reason why Kazooie looks so surprised is because the only time she's a full model outside of Banjo's backpack, she's being used as a melee weapon by her partner for his Forward Smash. And during that time, she has a surprised look on her face. Very nice video, overall.
Great video! Real quick elaboration on why the weird texture is present where the fur should be: Like most games released since the middle of the Xbox 360 & PS3, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts uses real-time modifiers to smooth out the visuals and, if I recall correctly, physics as well. This includes the ever so common "hair modifier" which generates less hair the further the camera gets from the model, and vice versa. This makes it easier and quicker for the devs to model and animate during development, at the expense of some extra graphical processing during gameplay, and just generates lots of hairs that are usually ready to be affected by some default physics (UE4 users and ex-UE4 users who don't bother coding their own physics will know this, because all of their physics look and feel identical, and that's just lazy). I haven't looked closely enough to tell whether they applied the world physics to Banjo's fur, but that's one of the big reasons the modifiers is used in other games. The weird curly hair texture will still be present during normal play, but only visible once the camera is zoomed out enough to justify disabling the real-time hair modifier. Almost every 3D game with hair or fur in it (especially those that need physics applied to them) since the mid-X360/PS3 days has featured and will feature modifiers like this, so I figured it would be helpful for you to know about them ahead of the next relevant videos! Again, great work as always and keep it up!
Fun fact, the super low poly version of Banjo on Kazooie's back is swapped in when you get the Turbo shoes. If you runs straight ahead with them on, Kazooie keeps a greater distance from the camera, thus needing less detail.
I come back to your channel every few months hoping to see a new entry in this series. Unfortunately, it hasn't happened, but if you ever do bring it back, I would personally like to see the evolution of Spider-Man models.
Something I would love to see for future episode; Compare the later models with a group of models from the earlier games. Example: The Smash Banjo, how many enemies worth of tries does he contain from Banjo-Kazzooe?
That would be interesting, but the problem is that there are three incarnations: Classic, Legend (TLOS), and Skylanders. If there were to be such an episode, there would be uncertainty on whether or not the episode should focus on one incarnation or all 3. Either way, it won't please everybody.
X2011racer Well he did do a video on Crash, which had radically different designs throughout his evolution over the years. He’d probably focus on the main game models like the original trilogy, Enter the Dragonfly, A Hero’s Tail, and then to TLOS A New Beginning & Eternal Night (which I believe both have the same character model) and then finally Dawn of the Dragon, which is probably the most radically different one in the Spyro specific series. He may or may not skip Skylanders, who knows. I’m curious to see how many Tris is on the Reignited Model though xD
@@RyderPlatinumWarpstar Well, so far, All the models you mentioned have been ripped, but the Skylanders incarnation hasn't had his models ripped yet; We're missing out on the early model from Spyro's Adventure and Giants and the later model from Swap Force to Imaginators. Not to mention the variants like Series 2 with the Wing Enforcement, Mega Ram Spyro, A.K.A. Series 3, and the mini counterpart, Spry. They don't have to do the moble spinoffs, unless they also want to analyze Awakened Spyro from Ring of Heroes.
@@RyderPlatinumWarpstar I don't think he should skip it. It's about how different the model is, not the quality of the game it is in. I really like the DOD design. It really is what a teenage Spyro would look like, his wings actually look a descent size and his other features look usable. The initial one was much more defined by PS1 graphics limitations than anything else. Though I had hoped they would stick with the thicker and more forward facing horns and the longer and deeper wings. To me the DOD design just looks so much more draconic.
marinus18 I wasn’t talking about skipping Dawn of the Dragon, I meant skipping Skylanders because those models haven’t been ripped yet. I do think his model in Dawn of the Dragon should be talked about.
So Banjo-Kazooie Banjo actually has 4 models as I know 1. Extremely High Poly Banjo when Camera is real close (During the Jiggy and Note Door animations) 2. Medium Poly Banjo when camera is tiny bit further away 3. Low Poly Banjo when camera is rather far And 4. Extremely low poly Banjo when camera is extremely far

this series is epic! i love seeing all the different comparisons and improvements over the years, and your commentary is fantastic with it! I'd absolutely love to see a model comparison for Kingdom Hearts games- especially since kh3 remodeled kh1 and kh2 sora, so there's direct comparisons to show how much the tech improved!
"CRT's were very blurry" Well, not exactly, the input resolution was very low, CRTs could output a much higher resolution if you wanted them to, but there wasn't any hardware at the time that could realistically do that at a usable framerate.
Well actually CRTs were blurry. Individual pixels would slightly bleed into the neighboring ones and, along with scan lines, created a sort of anti-aliasing blur effect. The bleeding would also become more pronounced with age as wear and tear accumulated, so people with older screens would have an even blurrier picture.
@@TexelGuy Not really, because the amount of bleeding would still be the same regardless. Being analog, CRTs could be made to support arbitrarily high resolutions, but if your monitor bled such that the screen picked up 50% of the cathode rays at 1mm away from the intended section of screen, resolution of your input video signal doesn't change that, so increased resolution is still going to have the classic blur regardless. Better made and maintained screens wouldn't bleed that much, but they'd still bleed to some degree.
@@alliebonesVODs My point still stands, CRTs aren't blurry, they are if you output at a very low resolution (just like any other monitor, but much better looking to to there being no 'native' resolution compared to an LCD), and the effects of bleeding will be reduced significantly with the higher pixel count. There's a reason why desktop CRTs are booming with enthusiasts, retro games look amazing in them, and modern games even better than most LCDs for a lot less money. Digital Foundry did video on it and found that it looks much better even with a lower resolution.
@@TexelGuy Okay, but you're making it out as if resolution is tied to how much bleed there is. How much bleed there is depends upon the individual CRT, and cranking up the resolution doesn't reduce it to my knowledge. There do exist CRTs with negligible bleed, but people playing on their parents' TVs back in the early 90's would have experienced noticeable blurring, which are what were being discussed in this video.
Once Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition comes out, you should do a video on Shulk. Xenoblade (wii) Smash (wii u) Xenoblade 3DS Xenoblade 2 Smash Ultimate Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Pretty sure he won’t do that since all of the characters he does do are older ones and are all very distinct and the appearances change immensely since the technology changed insanely while all his games are very recent and the appearances of him barely change at all I won’t really want to see Shulk anyways
A quick sidenote: The concert model is DIFFERENT from the one used in gameplay. Hands are 68 verts compared to whatever the gameplay one is, and the backpack has missing detail since you normally don't see behind banjo then.
You should do Cloud from Final Fantasy 7. There's 5 models from the first game alone! There's also Crisis Core, the Remake, and Smash for Wii U and Smash Ultimate.

Real quick elaboration on why the weird texture is present where the fur should be:
Like most games released since the middle of the Xbox 360 & PS3, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts uses real-time modifiers to smooth out the visuals and, if I recall correctly, physics as well.
LOD is even used in CGI to cut down rendering time, there are three different thanos models at different levels of detail used in endgame
THE SERIES IS ALIVE AGAIN BOOYYSS

Banjo: GET OUT THE FREAKING WAY DIDDY KONG!
Kazooie: why u no include me
I’m so happy this is one of my favorite series on UA-cam
Fun fact, the super low poly version of Banjo on Kazooie's back is swapped in when you get the Turbo shoes.
If you runs straight ahead with them on, Kazooie keeps a greater distance from the camera, thus needing less detail.
Actually Kazooie did exist at the time of Diddy Kong Racing.
The manual mentions her. BK just got lots of delays.
Please bring back Low Poly! it was an awesome series. And I love it!
I come back to your channel every few months hoping to see a new entry in this series. Unfortunately, it hasn't happened, but if you ever do bring it back, I would personally like to see the evolution of Spider-Man models.
Something I would love to see for future episode;
Compare the later models with a group of models from the earlier games.
Example: The Smash Banjo, how many enemies worth of tries does he contain from Banjo-Kazzooe?
A request I have: Spyro the Dragon?
I need more of this series

@Radicola I was a fan of the first Bubsy game but not the whole series.
It's not really a franchise.
They made one game twice.
Okay I stand corrected.
They made 2 games and made the second one twice. So it is a franchise.
why has it been so long since we got another low poly

"CRT's were very blurry"
Well, not exactly, the input resolution was very low, CRTs could output a much higher resolution if you wanted them to, but there wasn't any hardware at the time that could realistically do that at a usable framerate.
@@alliebonesVODs With a higher resolution, none of that would matter. You'd get a sharper image in the first place.
Xenoblade (wii)
Smash (wii u)
Xenoblade 3DS
Xenoblade 2
Smash Ultimate
Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition
Pretty sure he won’t do that since all of the characters he does do are older ones and are all very distinct and the appearances change immensely since the technology changed insanely while all his games are very recent and the appearances of him barely change at all I won’t really want to see Shulk anyways
