I loved the loch ness monster episode from the 70s!!
My favorite Doctor. As for as I'm concerned, this is where it really gets good.
Same actress for Sarah Jane, yep! She got her own spinoff show after this, "The Sarah Jane Adventures". It ran for 5 series, and only stopped because Elisabeth Sladen sadly passed away in 2011.
David Tennant loved Doctor Who growing up and Sarah Jane was the companion back then. So getting to actually act with her was really cool for him and I think you can see that, especially in that last scene where he hugs her.
Fun fact: for those shots of Sarah Jane and Rose laughing, David Tennant came on with a really badly drawn on mustache. That's genuine laughter. They shot his bits seperately.
Everyone asks if she's the same actress from the classic Doctor Who, but nobody asks about K-9. John Leeson, the voice of K-9, also returned for this episode.
And I never even knew this
For those of us in the UK of a certain vintage, this was Dr Who's love letter to its past and a lovely nostalgic trip.
You could just tell Tennant was geeking out inside and a little bit outside when SJS showed up.
Oh my, is that the actress from the classic Who? That is THE ACTRESS, THE COMPANION... After this episode -- the first time we'd seen Sarah Jane in decades, they gave her a series of her own, The Sarah Jane Adventures. Sadly, Elisabeth Sladen died a few years later, and all of Whodom was devastated. She is iconic! At least she got to work with David Tennant and... oops. Spoilers! I'm so glad you immediately understood how special she is! Sarah Jane Smith is probably the favorite companion of the fandom... others are amazing and beloved, but Sarah Jane... ❤
💯 agree. I miss her so much 😢
Ah yes, Sarah Jane Smith. She was a really great companion in the 70's, who had a couple of spinoffs of her own. One was...okay, and very 80s called "K-9 and Company", and another one that started after this appearance in Doctor Who called "The Sarah Jane Adventures", which was really good for a more kid-friendly show in the Doctor Who world. (SJA for the kids, Torchwood for the adults, and Doctor Who for everybody.)
And yeah, that's the same actress. Liz Sladen. It's funny, because that look on the Doctor's face when she came in, and after he talked to her -- that giddy look -- was real, because Sarah Jane was the companion David Tennant saw when he watched Doctor Who as a small child. Liz Sladen was his childhood, and he was so excited to have her there. Sadly, she passed away in 2011. :(
And there's another case of "Screw you, Mickey". His gloating, and then he had the GALL to insinuate that the Doctor would lose interest in her because she was going to get fat on chips. What a pig. Not only fat shaming, but sexist fat shaming. Early Mickey is such garbage.
Nah, I think after all the nasty crap Mickey's been spewing at her, he's not her boyfriend anymore.
If you like evil Giles you should definitely watch Merlin, Anthony Head is pretty chilling in that series LOL
“Sorcery!”
The Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) was Sarah Jane's Doctor. He was my first Doctor thanks to PBS in the 80's. In fact, you may want to brush up on some of the classic Doctors, if only to remember their faces. 😉 *But I did, indeed, cry at the end when he said goodbye (the Doctor hates endings) and he left her a new and improved K-9.
She started out with the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), and was with him for a whole Season before he regenerated into Tom :)
"A tear, Sarah Jane?"
#3 before regeneration.
I watched Sarah Jane with Jon Pertwee and Tom baker as the doctors. I then watched Sarah Jane with my ten year old daughter with David Tennant. In her spin off series the doctor appeared afew times. When she died in 2011 of cancer I consoled my daughter as she was upset that she had died. So doctor Who series has been around since the sixties spanning three generations .
Elizabeth sladen, actress for Sarah Jane-Smith who was the companion of the fourth doctor, in both classic AND new, so, yes, she is the same one
She's also the companion of the 3rd Doctor. She was the first companion to see a Doctor's regeneration 🌞
@@TejiknastenNot to be a pedant but Ben and Polly were the first companions to see the Doctor Regenerate. From William Hartnell to Patrick Troughton
Sarah Jane arrived in the 3rd Doctor's final season, and left after 2.3 seasons with the 4th Doctor. Several years later she was invited back to the role when 4 was leaving, to help bridge into the 5th Doctor, but she declined. During those discussions however, it was decided to give Sarah Jane her own spin-off series in which the Doctor gave her K9 (well - a K9; he actually went through a few of them!) The spinoff didn't get past the pilot... but Sarah Jane returned a few years later in a special anniversary episode - with K9. This was as such her 3rd appearance in Doctor Who. After filming this story, RTD talked to Elisabeth Sladen - the actress who played Sarah Jane - and they gave her a new spinoff - The Sarah Jane Adventures.
We were all very shocked when Elisabeth Sladen died. Her illness was kept very private, and whilst I don't really get teary about the 3 actors who played the Doctor who have died... her death still tugs at those strings 12 years on.
Not me crying during a reaction of an episode I've seen a dozen times!
Well, that was great. Thanks for your reaction!!
Such a good episode, so glad they gave her this comeback and a spinoff while she was falling to cancer. Such a great way to honor her and raise money for cancer research.
I'm welling up and I haven't even started the reaction! Sarah Jane has always been one of my favourite companions. RIP Elisabeth Sladen ♥
this episode is so nostalgic🥺 loved the reaction, Travis
This episode is so fun! I haven’t seen much Classic Doctor Who, so it was so fun finding out about his past. I love it every time they give us a little something
4:01 someone told you?! It’s so fun learning things about the doctor slowly, though…
Sarah-Jane Smith was an epic companion of the third and fourth Doctor. Just to mention K9 is exactly the same but he appeared after Liz Sladen left. They were acquainted in the spin off K9 and company. In the Classic series K9 was introduced with fourth Doctor and Leela.
Yes, Elisabeth Sladen played Sarah Jane Smith in classic doctor who and came back after the 2005 revival a few times. She also had her own spin off show, "The Sarah Jane Adventures"
Sarah Jane Smith was a companion to The Third (Jon Pertwee) and Fourth Doctors (Tom Baker) from Classic Who during the 1970's and K-9 was also a companion to the Fourth Doctor.
"I was right dance!" Another callback in Good Omens...
Sara Jane & the 4th Doctor were the first series syndicated in the US, so she holds a special place for me as the first companion I was aware of. For some reason the syndication pkg ended in the middle of The Leisure Hive. It drove me crazy that after the second eps it went back to Robot, the first 4th Doctor series. Took me years to get to the end of Leisure Hive.
She IS the same actress from Classic Who,played by Elisabeth Sladen..She was companion to both the 3rd and 4th Doctors.1973-1976 R.I.P
You're right - for 'old' fans, this was a *massive* deal when it first aired. Sarah Jane was companion to the Third and Fourth incarnations of the Doctor, and so was 'the' companion for generations.
I love it when people see Tony Head and say "Is that Giles?"
I was crying at the time. Because my pet dog died 2 days before this aired in the uk. Also out of all new who its the one i least watched because it was too close a reminder of my dog who lived 'til he was over 16.😢❤
A few years later Elisabeth Sladen wrote her autobiography (published in 2011, soon before her death) and David Tennant wrote the foreword. He's not a bad writer, BTW. But anyway it was very touching. Oh and both David and Matt Smith got to appear with her on The Sarah Jane Adventures. (In separate stories)
Oh yes! It's definitely the same actress! The fantastic Elizabeth Sladen. Bless her heart. 🥹
It is the same actress. That's one of the cool things about Dr Who, you never know who's gonna show up from previous series, or when. Sometimes they just pop up.
Sarah was not my favourite companion back in the day (it was Jo) but I knew she was most people's #1. After watching a couple of Eccleston/Piper episodes I thought Rose would become the 'new Sarah Jane'. This episode Sarah (yes the same actress - looking even better than she ever did in the 70s) became a favourite of mine.
She did age very well
I did it again. I ALWAYS cry at the end of this story.😢
Spin off - Sarah Jane Adventures...(Doctor Who Lite)
So many of us fell in love with Elisabeth Sladen in the 70s.
lol I forgot "giles"(/Uther Pengragon from BBC's Merlin) was in this episode
Yes, same actress, which led to The Sarah Jane Adventures.
he is my favorite Doctor!
Goodbye 'Our' Sarah Jane.
For old, OLD pre-millennial fans this was one of our favourite episodes, Sarah Jane & K-9 returning.
R.I.P the incredible Elizabeth Sladen
Since everyone else covered Liz Sladen, I'm gonna instead confirm that this is very much Giles! Anthony Stewart Head, great actor and The Eleventh Doctor... Well, in one world, at least.
Love Sarah Jane.
Same one R.i.P Liz
Link to the 2007 (wow I feel old) David Tennant and Catherine Tate/Lauren Cooper sketch for Comic Relief. It's amazing, a true British classic. So funny, you'll love it

Yes, Liz Sladen played Sarah Jane in both versions ans her spin offs. Also original actor as K9. They wouldnt recast a companion. Its original or nothing.
I highly recommend classic who. Sarah and K9 were a great link if you start with theres a lot who start from the beginning. I jumped alot when i first saw classic who to get a taste of the whole show and interest in anything or anyone returning
I recommend strongly to watch the RTD spin offs when they come around, because they are beautiful
I don't think they've ever recast an old companion in Doctor Who. If the actor dies, the character dies.
The actor that played Giles indeed. and he played a bad guy in Buffy... What else can you call it for a grown man to foist training to combat monsters on a teenage girl that has no other choice but to fight untill she dies
"she seems kind of young"... 60 at the time.
it is the same actor, although you've prolly be told that. and she's in her early 50's at the point this was filmed i believe. Since she was in her mid 20's when she was in Classic who from 1974-1977 and it's only been about 30 years between then and this. granted she is looking good for 50 by this point. wierdly this also canonised a failed spinoff called K9 and company, because k9 was actually introduced after sarah jane left, but the doctor in the spinoff gifts her a K9 MkII, and that spinoff wasn't conisdered canon by anything featuring her until this.
Actually, she turned 60 the year this was filmed. This woman aged like fine wine, never stopped being gorgeous.
I fully recommend watching the spin off.
This episode is the reason why rose is the worst companion ever her BOYFRIEND!! wants to come with her and she's all angry because she wants the doctor all to her self and just wants mickey for her needs in her world like in the episode doomsday and nother reason SHE ABANDONED HER OWN MOTHER and expects her to be ok with her
Sarah Jane Smith is generally regarded (by those who have watched both the classic and new eras) as the best companion ever. So much better that the bimbo Rose Tyler, who spent most of her time trying to get into the trousers of every nice young man she met. As far as I can remember (and I'm old enough to remember them all), Liz Sladen, who played Sarah Jane, is the only companion who's death made the top headline on the BBC News.
