So right away, I’m going to assume carbon ceramic discs, and those wild prices are if you buy the OEM replacements. Assuming you don’t take the more common route of just replacing them with iron discs, you can frequently find an aftermarket replacement. These aren’t low quality CC rotors, one of the companies making them is surface transforms, and they’re one of the pioneers of the technology. This actually represents an upgrade, as the OEM rotors are just chopped carbon rotors, while the surface transforms units are CFRC rotors. Oh yeah, ceramic rotors typically only wear meaningfully when they’re above the auto ignition temperature of carbon.
As samcrac has shown, maybe not on the carbon brakes, but for many other items you can go aftermarket. For example: you can buy the oil filter from the AM dealer for $126 or buy the exact same filter from Rock Auto for $14.00. Audi/Bentley are the same, as well as Land Rover, Jaguar, etc......

What many used car buyers don't realize, when you buy a high end used car for what you think is a great deal relative to its cost when it was new. You're still maintaining a vehicle with its list price when new. Buyer beware, you have to pay to play.
I’m in the UK. I bought one of these new ten years ago and have done 40,000 miles in it. I love it, but it is indeed expensive and I pray never to need new brake rotors! Last year, I needed a new clutch at 38000 miles (I drive in town in London a lot) and a new rear light unit (you can’t replace a bulb, it’s a sealed unit). £4500 for the clutch and £1000 for the rear light. Tyres are about £1200 for a set. I’ve had two new front splitter and a new rear diffuser, each one because somebody drove into it. Each is about £2500.
That's why the first thing I tell people who are about to buy a car new/used is to look up common issues, what it costs to replace, and maintenance costs. Too many people think “affording” a vehicle is paying the monthly payments.

I worked at a Chevy dealer in '09 when rhe C6 ZR1 came out. I remember the Corvette tech telling me that in order to determine remaining life on the ZR1's carbon ceramic rotors, you weighed them.
I had the immense pleasure of taking a few special cars (Vantage V8, R35 Skyline, V10 R8, Gallardo convertible and a 911) round the Donington "Heritage" circuit a couple of years ago and there's something special about an Aston, even if it has a Mercedes engine! The Aston was a tad nose heavy but the absolute SHOVE out of it and the sharp handling for the weight was top notch. That V12 sounds absolutely glorious, doesn't it?
I'm believe carbon ceramic brake rotors will last the life of the car. Just don't forget to change the brake pads so you don't ruin a rotor before it's too late! 😳
@@EazyDuz18 They don’t fade easily but they wear out like any other rotor. Definitely not the cost effective option if you plan on tracking your vehicle.
If carbon ceramic rotors were good for track use how come they aren’t used over steel rotors in top levels of Motorsport, they are seldom used these days. In the early days of the tech you saw them used but there are too many inherent drawbacks.
@@TheWretchedWorld They are used in some top level motorsports. It's a question of finding what's right for the specific application, yes the initial hype of carbon ceramic has died down. Thankfully! But it's not like the technology has been abandoned.
Thank you Wizard and Mrs. Congrats on selling the Carver. Great looking Aston Martin, also love the shape/size, something my elderly bones can get in and out of.
I'm sure the Wizard will step in if I've misunderstood, but I think whilst the steel swap can be done, the carbon ceramics last really well, provided they're not abused. Acid alloy wheel cleaner is a big no, for example, & as he said, windy guns, just don't take the risk. A lot of the V12s are really low miles, that one's done about 1000 miles a year, roughly, at that rate those brakes will last the car another 40 years, all being well - plenty of time to save up the $26k :-D
You can convert from the carbon ceramics to steel brakes - That is entirely possibly. Carbon Ceramics can last over 100k miles if driven reasonably. But most of their benefit is stopping performance while the brakes are hot - They're meant to glow and work well at those temps.
On a street driven car, there is basically no reason to have carbon ceramic brakes (except ego). I would pull them off the moment the car got home, and swap in steel. Then when it's time to sell, put the cc brakes back on. New owner gets brand new brakes. The plus is that steel brakes work better when they're cold too, through the new cc are getting better with cold performance. And, you can get stock Aston Martin parts to do the swap...
@@herranton just the risk that someone may ding and crack the rotor with a tool is a gigantic turn off to owning these. In IMSA plenty of their production version of those cars have CCB, yet everyone converts their brakes to steel because it has consistent feel and easy operability over CCB.
Every time a see a beautiful machine like this, I picture that animal Whistling Diesel getting a hold of something like this and my blood runs cold. Such a stunning automobile. I can see The Wizards rolling in this amazing ride.
I drove a 14 droptop V8 Vantage from N OK to Dallas so it could be serviced by Aston. The windshield fluid reservoir was cracked. The part alone was $750. FOR A WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID RESERVOIR. It truly is the territory of “if you have to ask you can’t afford it.” Carbon ceramic brakes do last a long time, but there is a coming wave of cars totaled out because the brake jobs are more expensive than the car is worth. Depreciation eats many, many European cars alive. The first person that figures out how to convert them back to steel at a cheaper rate will make some good money. Also that 14 Vantage was an automatic and shifted so slow I thought something was wrong with it. The dealership just said 🤷🏼♂️ that’s how they are! I’m sure newer double clutch cars feel better but that one lurched from gear to gear.
Although it's an astonishing beautiful piece of work...why do I see ford fusion in it,I do have to say Aston Martin is one of my favorite of the exotic cars today
Values are increasing in the UK for v12 manuals in particular, also v8s. If that car was advertised for sale in the UK there would be a bun fight over it 😊
@@dalehall2993 Yeah, but a complete brake job for a ceramic equipped Vette is a bit over $9k. Fun fact. The first Vette with ceramics had the exact same brakes as a Ferrari Enzo. Same Brembo brakes. Same markings. Same part number. But when ordered from Ferrari they cost close to $30k.
Couldnt you simply attach a second battery to the cables with some alligator clips, while you swap the actual battery for the new battery? The car wouldnt even know the battery had been swapped because the system would never lose power.
There are some options, you can ie. get a small battery pack that plugs into your cigarette lighter and provides power to the modules while you're changing the actual battery.
If you need to disconnect battery because you don't want power to the car, not to replace it, you're out of luck in any case. You'd have to go through the entire process. Perhaps there is a process to go through before removing power from the vehicle, though. Kind of like a computer shut down vs. a power failure?
"FoMoCo" code for Aston Martin trying to hide all the Ford parts that were used on this super expensive vehicle. I cringed when The Wizard banged his flashlight on the $5000.00 brake rotor 😎
I'm truly glad the Car Wizard, being an independent shop, is knowledgeable and experienced to tackle these cars way better than dealerships..Amazing how a simple job can quickly turn into a nightmare with these cars. Over-complicated for no logical reason. At least the Honda Civic will keep on working after the battery is replaced. No, thanks, I will take the Honda Civic any day over this..
The thing is this, the value of the car will go down (rapidly), but the cost of those repairs will stay the same. Sooner or later the cost of the repairs exceeds the car's value and basically totals it. This is why you see cars like this selling for less than $20k in 10yrs. You lease a car like this for 2yrs and move on before the repairs sink in.
V12 Vantages are increasing in value significantly faster than the market. Well sorted, low mileage examples have sold for $300k recently, far more than original $225k MSRP. Even V8 units are taking off.
These cars have never really depreciated much from new, and indeed in the UK values are climbing. The last of a breed they are - a naturally aspirated V12 with a proper 3 pedal manual gearbox and Rear Wheel Drive.
My Corvette C6 ZR1 has similar carbon ceramic brakes. A few ZR1owners report that the rotors had issues with imbalance causing vibration at above 80mph. Very expensive to replace those brakes, but when you need stopping power, they're awesome.
Changing the car battery on this car and some other new cars is now a special procedure so that power is not interrupted to all the microprocessor modules, or else everything will need to be recalibrated. Back in years past changing the car battery was simple and it did not matter that a power interruption occurred.
Pro tip for carbon ceramic owners: Sell the rotors and pads and buy steel replacements. For an Aston Martin, it'll still be expensive, but more like 5 grand.
Was not expecting an Aston Martin customer - especially of a version of that rarety - to change the battery himself. Maybe... It was done on another shop. Nevertheless, he or she took it to the right place. Cheers to both the Car Wizard and to the proud ownder of this beautiful Aston Martin.
The lines on this car have been absorbed into the entire Ford line up. If you look closely at the Ford Fusion, the grille looks very similar. The rims? They look like a new Ford Escape's rims. If we can just get the V12 into the Escape, now that WOULD be a grocery getter. The test of one's wealth is not when the car is bought new, but rather when it breaks down. It's like that in marriage too LOL

its gonna be like $600 for my ford but that's for both rear calipers and hoses
If you drive it normally yes… track use no.. you will kill them quickly.
@@TheWretchedWorld no
@@EazyDuz18 They don’t fade easily but they wear out like any other rotor.

Thank you Wizard for making my day, it makes my BMW M6 Competition brake job looks like nothing compared to this Vantage brake job.
Farewell Carver, keep sailing at full steam mid 70's style.
Q-branch must have a big budget with all the Aston Martins Bond uses
Wizard, wouldn’t most folks just convert to the typical Vantage steel brakes set up? That’s possible right?
Only 230 made most folks wouldn’t own one
My Ford Pinto is taking me to where I want to go and it's attractive to lot of people when stop at red lights. I am happy.
So keep 12V hooked up while you change the battery is something new i learned today.
that's what they did on my car when I went to a battery shop to change the battery, and I don't own a fancy car, it's a 2014 Nissan Versa
That's what i was thinking too just toss a jump box on the ends while you do a battery swap

26k for a brake job makes me wonder what the original cost of that option was when it was new.
Maybe even cheaper - that's how the printer manufacturers do it 😀
The brakes were standard fitment.
I drove a 14 droptop V8 Vantage from N OK to Dallas so it could be serviced by Aston.
The windshield fluid reservoir was cracked. The part alone was $750. FOR A WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID RESERVOIR.
It truly is the territory of “if you have to ask you can’t afford it.”
Carbon ceramic brakes do last a long time, but there is a coming wave of cars totaled out because the brake jobs are more expensive than the car is worth.
The guy who designed the ford fusion came from Aston if I remember correctly.

Can’t you dump the existing brakes and replace them with stock GM brakes?
The value of that car will drop like a falling girder
I don’t know, I think it’ll appreciate long term. Especially when they stop making manual transmissions and ICE powered cars.
Values are increasing in the UK for v12 manuals in particular, also v8s. If that car was advertised for sale in the UK there would be a bun fight over it 😊
I love Aston Martin cars are so understated and underrated for the cars that they are
Dang. I thought Porsche Ceramic brakes were bad enough.
Corvette also has ceramic brakes..

It must have been the big F word!👀🤣
@11:32 The Wizard making the "uggah duggah" noise of an impact gun. Lol😂
Couldnt you simply attach a second battery to the cables with some alligator clips, while you swap the actual battery for the new battery? The car wouldnt even know the battery had been swapped because the system would never lose power.
I love the crabon-fibber. And btw, you can use the carbon ceramic brake-rotors from a Ford Fiesta. It saves you a lot of money
So - how do you replace the battery without causing the entire electrical system to go haywire?
There are some options, you can ie. get a small battery pack that plugs into your cigarette lighter and provides power to the modules while you're changing the actual battery.
If you need to disconnect battery because you don't want power to the car, not to replace it, you're out of luck in any case. You'd have to go through the entire process. Perhaps there is a process to go through before removing power from the vehicle, though. Kind of like a computer shut down vs. a power failure?
Where can you do top speed and brake hard? Not in any driving on government roads
Why would you live in Kansas with such a huge variation in temperature ? If I were to live in usa I'd head for a coastal area near north Carolina
Sometimes individuals have more money than brains.
My Corvette C6 ZR1 has similar carbon ceramic brakes. A few ZR1owners report that the rotors had issues with imbalance causing vibration at above 80mph. Very expensive to replace those brakes, but when you need stopping power, they're awesome.

Wizard needs to get out of the garage more. Honda sells genuine carbon fiber trim and accessories. It's made in Italy and it ain't cheap.
Changing the car battery on this car and some other new cars is now a special procedure so that power is not interrupted to all the microprocessor modules, or else everything will need to be recalibrated. Back in years past changing the car battery was simple and it did not matter that a power interruption occurred.
The benefit of the carbon rotors is that unless you're tracking the car you'll probably never need to change them.
Pro tip for carbon ceramic owners: Sell the rotors and pads and buy steel replacements. For an Aston Martin, it'll still be expensive, but more like 5 grand.
The carbon ceramic brakes if treated correctly are lifetime brakes
I don't even own a civic and I feel attacked....damn Wizzard
