After the first guy, Em said f that, and decided to retsliate for real.
They were real mc's from detroit, and were supposed to just do their shi for the movie, but Em still couldnt let them have a free pass

Under the filming of 8 Mile, they brought in MCs from Detroit in the 313 and Dresden area, and the 8 Mile strip to be a part of this s*** so they could come up and freestyle against Eminem
Very true man, I'm from Detroit and around this time I used to perform at the place called C-Notes where a couple of artist I knew were part of this. The battles were done to kill some time in between filming. There is actually more footage than just this that I have seen.

The production team did a contest and let members from the audience battle B Rabbit. We wasn't even supposed to actually rap but "act" like it, hence this is why the mic was off. I think the crowd was getting a little anxious though. Also, he said that dude was from Ohio because he had a "'Bone-thugs-n-harmony" style.

The first time I saw the battles, I felt so bad for the chick; but was super impressed that Em gave her a hug at the end. Also, I thought there were 4 not 3 but I could be remembering incorrectly. AND I could swear that in the theatre, these scenes were shown b/c I remember seeing them and wondered what happened to them on the DVD but found them on the extras.

you should watch the full behind the scenes and react, it's brilliant. They auditioned extras for these battles for the dvd but Em was losing his voice so they muted his mic, but after the first guy he was like "fuck that"
The best view is Marvwon and others from the Detroit area talking about this on Math Hoffa. (ua-cam.com/video/Ysb5ynv2AA8/v-deo.html) It was a contest and morale thing they were doing one day with a few of the best chosen to "battle" Eminem and shoot footage but faking it with Em's voice ordered to rest. Only Marvwon couldn't take that opportunity for granted, and then if HE was going to rap, Em wasn't going to stand there and NOT respond. So, some of what Em said wasn't caught as he started rapping but had to fiddle to turn on the mic he wasn't supposed to be using. Rules were which stopped first rather than coming to battle for who's best gauged by audience response, making it more of a TKO than a full punch, especially with voice issues affecting Em and a shooting schedule to consider. However, Marvwon rightfully takes pride in "beating" Eminem and acknowledges how that experience changed his life, especially after it came time to highlight features on the DVD that even got him mentioned in a segment on ET. He said his own mother hadn't believed in him succeeding in rap as a real way to make money but after seeing him on TV she changed her mind and started encouraging him. The most important thing is the 3 Detroiters all have nothing but love for Em and make a point to confirm he DOES put money into the city, including by using as many locals as they could during that 8 Mile shoot and paying top dollar as an hourly wage for doing "absolutely nothing but stand around and meet some of the best rappers in the world"! There's a relationship that formed between Marvwon and Em, and it's really lovely to see people who were there to talk about the reality instead of just repeating the race-baited hate of anecdotes and washed-up DJs/rappers turned podcasters driving clicks and eating off Em's name!
In the making of the movie, they actually had a contest between all the extras and those 3 were the winners to potentially be used in the movie. In the first battle, he wasnt supposed to rap back which is why is mic was off. He was getting taunted by the crowd and decided to give them something. He was losing his voice near the end of that day which is why his mic was off at the start. Love those deleted scenes.
So this battles was the way to give people some spirit , the spend so many hours on the room with the smoke and the heat that people was getting bored, the production decided to start a battle rounds and the winning people have the chance to show on the video

Eminem was saving his voice for his "real" scenes but one of the extras thought he was clever and tried to rip Em for real so Em wasn't going to sit and take that so he turned his mic back on and ripped the extra to shreds, its said that the extra was so embarrassed by his "real" resounding defeat!

To me, Marvin did have a better verse, flow and all-around energy, but that ripped line was my definitive favorite of that battle. Shit had me rolling

Marv talks about it, most of the extras for the film were local rappers, em made sure they got jobs. This was something they decided to do to keep the moral up and have a bit of fun during the long ass shoots

The period bar was from the rap olympics in like 96/97 when he battled a female. ...marv won got recognized for this and was on the road to total slaughter. almost like the ultimate fighter show but for MC's.. was like 10 yrs ago but thats when daylyt had his moment and battled dizaster...and when joe budden lost to holla at main event from that show....

The crowd got bored in between sets and filming shoots. (It took hours) They asked for people to battle Eminem but Eminem wasn’t supposed to speak (save his voice) but the MC in him said f it and people got hurt on that stage lol

She got up and basically face planted in front of Tony Hawk. Not only that but did it free style , not even rehearsed lines like all writers keep in their pocket since Oscar Wilde , she stepped up and was like shot mics on I gotta go . The crowd was as tense as being infront of Eminem . But it’s like the par 25 in Tim cup . Mad love for it !

The bonus battles happened bcuz all the extras were just standing around bored between takes. Ig it was taking a long time. So producers decided to pick 3 or 4 ppl from the extras that could battle. The thought was for him to not say shit... He couldn't help it though and we got this classic

This actually set place in a real battle rap place and EM wanted real battle rappers from the D to go up against and to set the stage to give them their shine for the fans and marv1 only won battle against EM because EM lost his voice he said it in an interview and then at a party EM found him and challenged him again and he declined it so he stayed one up on him and actually pissed EM off both marv1 and EM said the same thing
