  • A soundtrack-less clip of cab-cam footage from our Paignton railtour of 16 June 2018, uploaded to illustrate the difference at Newbury station since our railtour in March (see • Reading to Hungerford ... ). Newbury station footbridge which dated from the year 1910 was removed during the intervening three months, as part of the electrification works. In this video we also run via platform 3 at Newbury Racecourse, and so visit the Down Newbury Loop instead of the Up Newbury Loop.

That was a very interesting clip, even without the soundtrack. It is no wonder that Network Rail have made such a mess of their electrification plans when looking at the over-engineered gantries that have been installed. If BR had been given the same level of funding, the wires would have reached Swansea and Temple Meads by now.

Yes, electric services are now running to Newbury. They began on 2nd January. Class 387 Electrostars work the local stopping services from Reading but the proposed IET's working the Paddington - Bedwyn services have been postponed due to the door cameras on these units not being up to scratch for DOO working. therefore these workings are still in the hands of class 165 turbos for the time being. Inter City IET's change over from electric to diesel or vice versa at Newbury on in that vicinity if not stopping.

Thanks for the video, and letting me see the changes at Newbury. I now know three stations next to race courses, the others are Plumpton and Lingfield.

Wonderful, I expect that the Electrification on this bit is in place by now, this is the limit on this branch of the GWR, will you eventually release more of this particular rail tour ? Anyway enjoying everything you post, thank you for sharing, much appreciated all your hard work....

Is it just me, or is it typical of modern railway planners that they decide to electrify only part of the established service route to Bedwyn, rather than the entire journey? They could then run straight electric services the whole way and not need to invest in the additional cost of bi-modals...

It’s down to funding, which is a political issue.
