How to get "VR Legs" (beat motion sickness)
    1. Create reference of real space for your brain
-> Place a shower mat in the middle of the room so that your feet can feel it. This also helps to eventually turn Guardian off with amazing results on your immersion level.
-> Put a fan in a corner of the room and turn it on
-> Fake steps when you move forward/backward
-> In the first sessions prefer to turn your head and move only forward or backward. Avoid strafing movements to start.
    2. Do not (NEVER) play if you are hungry or have a headache. Even after, being hungry is a no go.
    3. Stop playing whenever you START feeling sickness. DO NOT try to get over it. Stop 15-30 minutes immediately. You can continue your game after.
After a few sessions you will be able to stay immersed for a long time if not an unlimited time!

I tried sitting on a gym ball and moving to simulate the movement in game and kept a bottle of ginger ale on standby. weirdly while playing a space sim telling myself you're in space of course you'll feel strange helped a bit.

The fan is huge, and what helped me overcome VR sickness. It made me able to play longer and eventually I didn't need it. And yes, minimize strafing, only move forward on the stick and turn your head (or use snap turning if you must) to reorient. Third point is also key, as soon as you start to feel it, you take the headset off and wait. I would personally say 30 minutes is the minimum but yeah. Fake steps made me feel worse fwiw.

Can definitely confirm it's not wise to just try and push through...had 36 hours of nausea after I tried that.
I think the central theme of what works for most people is regular small doses and increasing as able, much like lifting weights.

The fake steps made me feel worse too, I have seen that I got motion sickness whenever I lean my real legs while walking on the game. Anyway the other tips are great.

I've found that after hours of playing in VR you simply get more and more used to it over time and the VR sickness lessens on its own, at least in my experience. And on the other hand, if I take a long break from VR gaming for weeks, I kinda have to rebuild that tolerance again, but it returns quicker than when I first started playing VR.

    • @GKaliasMe
      @GKaliasMe 6 місяців тому +1

same for me... took some weeks playing mostly staionary games or using teleportation though... also when i started to get used to walking in vr. climbing was still the worst also weightless games like lone echo. wrecked me hard. i'm just happy i never gave up.

    • @RaethFennec
      @RaethFennec 6 місяців тому +1

Same. I have also become more sensitive over time to my level of tolerance. I can feel it slowly building before the nausea starts, and so stop more gracefully when it's only a faint feeling of pressure or extra warmth. If I don't play VR at all for a long while, I might only last an hour or two when I used to be able to play for several hours without issue.

I completely agree with this, I'm a VR developer and when I first started using the Quest 2 I would get mega sickness. What I did is in my first week of getting it I just tried playing VR games as much as possible and eventually you will get used to it. I feel like back in the day when vehicles were first invented, the people of that time had a similar experience. My other antidote is smoking weed before you use it 😂 but kids don't do drugs

Remember that comfort impacts the duration and tolerance. Bad headstrap and too much pressure on the face plate can cause you to get sick faster, especially once you get sweaty since sweating is an indicator.

A technique that I've used to help with motion sickness is to move my body in some kind of accordance with the movements I'm making in game. So when I walk, I take a half step forward and lean into it. I'll take a half step back if moving backwards. When turning, I'll turn my head in the same direction a little bit. These really help keep me from getting too bad. I still get the unpleasant sensations, however.

And after a while I don’t even need to march in place anymore. After 2 weeks I can comfortably play Skyrim VR, Fallout 4 VR and HL Alyx. Which were the reasons I bought VR in the first place!!

i am 68 years old, have heart problems as well as a psychotic lifelong fear of heights.
I was leery about VR but I figured what the hell, I started out with tame roller coasters with the firm mindset that this is not real, I am in control. I have since moved on to flying sims and the whole motion concerns and height phobias are gone. Again I think it's the knowledge that I am in total charge.
Barrel rolls, loops and flying upside down is just so damn much fun and unbelievably relaxing.

Getting my VR legs was sooo draining. It was about 5 days of barely moving inside games, gradually incrementing movement, while heavy breathing until I had to lie down for some hours... then all of a sudden, no nausea anymore... literally in the 5th day of pushing through as much as I could, its like my brain finally said "ok ok!... go crazy".
    Definitely worth it imo :)

I've suffered from motion sickness my whole life. I literally can't ride in the passenger seat of a car without dramamine. I thought surely I could never play VR and I started with Blade and Sorcery, felt sick at first, had to take it slow but less than a year in I'm running all over the place, jumping, doing shit I was sure I could never do in all kinds of games. Moving in place helped me ALSO a tip i dont see mentioned like ever but strangely worked for me--I put half full water bottles in my pockets. That, plus the faux movement in place, really seems to trick my brain into thinking im actually moving.
I also have one of those "eye puffiness" reducers that are like a sleep mask with fluid inside that youre supposed to freeze. If you dont freeze it it's just loose liquid. I sometimes wear that across my forhead for some additional fake motion to help my brain.

I bought Blades and sorcery. I played the game for like 1,5 hour and when I finally ended my VR session and took it off my face, I was feeling so sick + my brain was so confused. I spend like 5 minutes looking at my arms. They were so surrealistic. The sickness moved away after like 20 minutes, but what was really unpleasent was the overall confusion about reality. Thats how I imagine Benadryl overdose, not freaking VR experience xD I will try the ginger next time.

After a while your brain gets past the idea of it. Do what you feel is best, ultimately it will take time to get used to anything. Take it slow and give yourself plenty of patience, usually in the form of frequent breaks. Even if you are a gamer with many games under your belt, VR is a whole new experience for our ancient body design. We aren't used to seeing movements where our inner ears don't confirm what we see, and our ancient brains haven't caught up. This video mentions that it could be your body thinking it has been poisoned. I happen to think it is just a default reaction because our brains do not have a subroutine for "eyes and inner ear motion detection mismatch"

I've heard that the main thing is if you're playing a game where you might get sick, stop before you even start to feel sick. If you play too long and get motion sickness, it makes it worse the next time you play. It's about playing a bunch without getting sick, and eventually you'll be able to go longer and longer without feeling queasy

After about 3 play sessions I no longer have to move my feet while walking in game, and I can turn a bit faster. I stopped getting nauseated after about 3 play sessions. I got my "VR legs" years ago, and now I turn on smooth locomotion and smooth turning right at the start of a new game, and I don't like the "comfort tunnel" effect, so that gets switched off. However, like most people, I did get VR sickness when I got my first VR headset, and I would do something very similar to your suggestion, which was to spend just a little time each day sliding/smooth moving through a VR environment. My app of choice at the time was Google Earth VR, and I began by sliding through the environment while seated, and once I was mostly comfortable with that, I would switch to standing. It's all a gradual process, but now I zoom through VR shooters and everything else without any ill effects at all.

For some reason I just didn’t have this. I’m convinced it has something to do with exposure to screens and tech growing up. I tried it with my son and he’s able to separate reality and what’s on the headset to a level that many adults can’t do. But he’s also had a lot of exposure and he’s familiar with screens and tech in general.

I think the "lying" is the most important part, but I would describe it very differently. I believe it's about anxiety. The first time you experience motion sickness it will be because you haven't experienced vr before. After that, it's the anticipation of becoming sick and that is the self fulfilling prophecy. Every time you get anxious, you reinforce the subconscious "I'm sick" response.
When I stand in vr I feel the weight of my arms, my body. I may be flipping around in Jet Island, but I know I'm grounded, I know where real ground is. When I don't know which way the virtual ground is anymore, when I've lost my virtual orientation, I feel my body. If you want to take a step further you can even just close your eyes.
Separate your eyes from your sense of balance and find that center. Find the peace. When vr takes your eyes for a spin, let go and stop caring about that feedback. That anxiety goes "but I can't keep up, where is everything?" , but that's the response to dull, let it go and find yourself again. When you're calm you can pick out the rotations by gauging how frequently a particular landmark flashes across your vision and can judge your orientation, rotation direction and speed. You can even look for the poles of your rotation by finding the two points opposite of eachother that stay in place and rotate on the spot.
Your eyes aren't your real balance, decouple that from your ears, just like how eye convergence and focal depth are decoupled.
I would suggest finding some way to get vr spinning, for example getting in a car and doing donuts, and just relax. Look past what the headset is showing you and just feel your body do nothing, anything your eyes pick up at this time should be let go of

Definitely getting your feet wet is the best way for me. Every time I return to vr I can only muster an hour or so before I start feeling sick, but play vr games a few days in a row and I can stretch that to several hours, and that's all I really need, I don't like spending too much time with my headset strapped to me, especially if I'm sweating in the summer.

The big thing for me is to take the games where movement is based on your hand movements, move things around, and really take some time to consider what is happening: you are moving the world as if it is on a panel in front of you. Once you understand that this is ALWAYS what is happening, it's much easier for your brain to keep that thought when the world is moving past you even when you're not the one moving it.

Ginger ale works to mitigate especially the linger after effects of returning to the real world. Truth be told after using the Vive since 2016 I have never gotten over feeling ill while sliding around. Cockpits are okay as long as you still have 6dof of movement. 3dof isn't enough (which some games have). In each game, simply playing through the discomfort helps overcome it to such an extent that it's enjoyable for a half hour at a time. Beyond that, the cumulative discomfort says it's time to stop. Sadly, it takes time accustoming my brain to each game separately. With enough effort and using it every day, the symptoms reduce considerably but for me never truly have disappeared. Now, teleporting or something very well designed for VR like HL Alyx, no sickness whatsoever. Can play for hours. It's the movement without inertia that is the culprit for me.

I got the original oculus dev kit back in the day (total stupid decision in hindsight ,but was desperate to try it) and it made me VIOLENTLY ill to the point I was so depressed thinking I’ll never be able to experience VR, and not my dream of fast FPS. Well then was then, low frame rates, no positional tracking, crap resolution - skip forward a decade and I’m flying around in Quake with no bother at all.
Not sure if it’s just VR legs, or the technology is so much better. Think it’s mostly the latter tbh.

games where you either float or aren't touching the ground make me way more motionsick than games where you just walk around on the ground.
and If you really wanna beat vr sickness just do what everybody else does and just play a lot, in your first two or three sessions you'll get motion sick after 15 minutes, but the more you play the longer it'll take for you to get motion sick and after a while you wont ever get motion sick

first time i got vr back on PSVR gen 1 i was concerned about motion sickness because i can get car sick if im not driving. so i tried skyrim and a few other games and while i did feel the woozieness and my mind would roll over on itself when strafing, i didnt get truely sick. so being the highly inteligent smart guy i am, i actively tried to get myself motion sick, you know to test my limits to see if ill be ok.
i tried all sorts of things with no real issues until i played a racing game that the resolution was PS2 levels and i was fine going forward (which im glad cause i love racing games). i got the fun idea to drive backward on the track. no real issue, i looked sideways and i was a little weirded out but not bad. then i rappidly would go forward them backward repeatedly over and over and everything was sliding at high speed in low resolution. i got sooooooo sick and dizzy. you aint kidding either, car sickness lasts a few minutes, i was sick from the VR for about 6 hours, maybe longer but i went to try and sleep it off lol.
so im perfectly ok with normal vr as long as i dont rapidly switch between forward and back movement while looking sideways. when the game is highly engaging i dont notice the standard twang in my stomach and probably motion sickness pills would handle that,

Ramp up the turning speed for every game to very high and you won't be needing snap turn anymore in no-time! I can play anything in VR ignoring the comfort settings completely

I got my VR legs before I bought my VR ready PC. I used to play steamvr on a laptop with a 1650 ti and settings turned up way too high. I got like 10 fps and it was horrible, but I wanted to play so much I just tried to blank out and keep going. After that, with my 3070 ti everything moved so smooth and I never got motion sick again, except when I tried a flight sim, VTOL VR, which I've also gotten rid of motion sickness.

At the beginning of my VR experiences, games like minecraft, with smooth locomotion were unplayalable. Totally. I feel sick every time I move forward. So I played Resident Evil 4 and Half-Life Alyx with teleport, I beat some times the game fully, especially RE4. Then I discovered by accident, after some months, that I was NO more affected from motion sickness. So replayed Half Life and Resident evil 4 with smooth locomotion and was great, really better. I think the key is just play with teleport and stationary games first, and the sickness will go away by itself.

Those things have stopped me from taking meds for my motion sickness on everything! Ammusment parks, Airplanes, and even VR gaming!!! Someone please find these things and spread the word. When I first played Dirt Rally and realized I had to tilt my head up or down when I drive up or down a hill, that was really disorienting at first.
Later I came back to it and got used to it and had a great time with the VR.
Then I enabled head orientation locked to car and figured out why I had to tilt my head up or down on hills before. With head orientation locked to car, every little bump moved the viewpoint and seriously made me uncomfortable. I won't ever do that again.

Months later I am good...I take ginger pills and gradually built up to playing more and more. Now I can race longer...every now and then I get a slight nausea feeling but it comes and goes fast.
