  • Welcome to this handy little video on when to transfer to hospital and how to avoid going to hospital too early when you've been labouring well at home. These are my top observations for you :)
So, you’re labouring at home and everything feels great… but how are you meant to know when to go to hospital??
What if you go too soon? What if you go in too late??
We know that women who arrive too early to a busy maternity ward may be sent home, we also know that women who arrive too early may also be offered augmentation (a form of induction of labour) to get their labour moving faster. Neither of these options are particularly appealing! so how will you know when you are probably ready to transfer? Watch this little video and find out.
There is also little need for any type of contraction counter if you and your birth partner are simply and clearly able to observe the building signs of your labour.

How to deal with a really long latent phase - last was 3 weeks and started at 36 weeks. 1st was 10 days. It's hard with it going on that long and having real contractions to know when to go in or stay at home. Now on the third and all but given up on idea of home birth due to not progressing well in first stage without the drip

I wonder if that is a positioning issue? Hard to tell from us chatting here but labour can be very stop and start if a baby is not in an optimal position for birth. Have you explored Spinning Babies? Or maybe seen a womens’ health physio? I’ll be popping out a video on this on Monday and then again the following week. However, do research the Forward Leaning Inversion, the Flying Cowgirl and the Abdominal Lift and Tuck. Why so many mothers wanting to have their babies in hospital? I can't understand it. Me and my two siblings were born at home. My two grandmothers birthed 12 children between them, all born at home with no fatalities. All healthy children.
Infant mortality is on the rise I think because of hospital births. Doctors like to schedule births rather than let them arrive naturally. I regret not having my babies at home. Hospital was a terrible experience.

Yes, a recent large home birth study published in the Lancet, that took place in the UK showed that for women with uncomplicated pregnancies, home was the safest place to give birth. Our home birth rates are still woefully low though.

Im in Croatia and we have socialized medical care, there is a lot of pressure to use it and birthing in hospital is free. Midwives arent allowed to assist us in home births. Paying midwife from another country is 3 000 euros.

I am so sorry to hear this. Labour at home for as long as you feel comfortable and happy and then transfer for just the very last part perhaps. xx
