I've been using procreate for around 2 months now and have been SO AFRAID of learning how to do masks (it just seemed too complicated for a traditional artist like me lol). Watching this, I've realized that masks ARE LITERALLY THE PERFECT SOLUTION TO ALL OF THE PROBLEMS I'VE BEEN HAVING IN PROCREATE lmao
Im 1.5 minutes in but I wanted to thank you for making this so diligently: editing, voice, illustrations, examples, the care that you gave to make this as much clear as possible. Thank you :) this is how I'd want to present a work.
Been using Procreate for 3 years. This is one of the most concise tutorials I have seen. Then I went to your website and found so many resources. Excellent.....well done....and your teaching and presentation skills are spot on.
This is the best tutorial ever! Some people go on and on and you have to skip to the middle of the video, but this tells u everything u need to know without unnecessary chatter. Keep up the good work!!!
The best way for me to get the hang of layers is to follow along. Explaining as you go really helps me. Showing us how to backtrack and change things really helped. Thank you so much.
Great tutorial! I'm new to Procreate and drawing on the iPad but was familiar with masks from using Photoshop for a billion years. Seeing why you would use each type of mask in Procreate was really helpful for me. I'm also so excited to see you have a daily art prompt! It's just what I needed to commit to practicing drawing every day.
Okay, this is what I think I learned from the first five minutes of the video. The rest went too fast for me, so I'm just going to focus on this part since it's a brief explanation. I may be wrong, so please don't rely solely on me. Alpha lock- When you apply alpha lock to a layer, you can only draw on the parts of that layer you've already drawn on. She drew the leaf, and when she applied alpha lock, she couldn't draw outside of the leaf unless she made a new layer. Use alpha lock when you want to draw inside a layer without accidentally drawing "outside the lines" of that layer. Clipping mask- When you want to draw on a certain part of a layer, while still being confined to that shape. It uses the layer beneath it as a reference for where you're allowed to draw, but you can modify that new clipping mask layer part independently without affecting the layer beneath it. She was able to use the leaf she drew as a layer she couldn't draw outside of, but when she applied clipping mask she was now able to draw veins of the new leaf without affecting or messing up the leaf. Use clipping mask when you want to draw inside a specific layer, without affecting that specific layer and instead drawing on a new one that still uses the shape of the old one as a guide. Layer mask- A mask that can change how parts of that layer show on your picture. You can use black to hide parts of the layer. Or you can use white to reshow it. Or, use grey to make it look translucent. This mask is still a bit iffy to me, so give me grace here please. Use clipping mask when you want to hide or show (or a mixture of both by making it transparent), parts of your layer. Now, how to use it while making your art for different reasons and ways is still unbelievably confusing to me 'cause she went too fast. (Not her fault, easy mistake.) I think I'll just get used to using them through my art while I work. Hopefully, this helped anyone else who was confused.
I've been using Procreate wrong this whole time !! I could've saved SOOO MUCH TIME using masks!! Now I know why artists love the software so much! I've been adding layers and doing textures and erasing edges and merging... this is so helpful this video is perfect, THANK YOU!!! ❤
Thank you... I had no idea that selecting a layer, opening a new one, turning that into a mask creates a mask based on the previous selected layer! WHAT!? Game changer!!!!!
Your videos are so informative, and so much fun to watch. This explanation of masks transcends Procreate - it's a great way to better understand masks in whatever app you are using. Keep em coming
I have never owned an apple device, but watching these really make me want one. I am completely addicted to watching your videos. #PositiveEnergyAllAround
It really is a game changer. I always wanted a cintique and a better computer. After using an intous in Photoshop for years I took the dive and grabbed a pro with the apple pencil. Absolutely amazing. Procreate is also about to drop a huge update, it is only getting better! As far as digital painting goes, it's really fantastic in my opinion. It's also incredible for recording and making music. Really really happy I dropped the money for a 12 inch and Procreate. I'd also like to add that Procreate is a one time purchase! Lastly, Adobe is going to be releasing a dedicated painting and drawing app, as well as Photoshop for iPad this year. Combine that with iOS 13 rekeasin in a couple days and one can have a huge arsenal at their disposal.
Many videos I’ve watched about masking particularly layer masks don’t give you an example of how layer masks are used in practice. So you only understand the theory but not the application, but this was great and you get a very cute drawing at the end . It’s worth pointing out that in the case of clipping and layer masks you can use the transform tool to move and change the mask and base layer independently in space on your page . Thank you Lisa you make digital art such fun.
I've been using Photoshop since 1995, and your videos are making love Procreate. I know it doesn't so all that Photoshop does, but for pure art, it seems so much more user-friendly!
There were like 2 or 3 things that happened so fast I didn’t quite get right away but this video has helped SO, SO MUCH THANK YOU I’m gonna go draw right now! ❤️
Brilliant! Thank you so much. I've struggled with masks for years and had college classes on Photoshop and NO ONE explained masks in a clear simple UNDERSTANDABLE way like you just did.
I’m definitely gonna have to watch this 1500 times before it sinks in and I can use these functions as seamlessly as you, but that’s on me. FanTAStic tutorial!
What is probably the most confusing and difficult technique, you have explained in a very articulate and simple manner. Whtle is a Window; Black Blocks is a very easy way to remember. Thanks a lot.
i just got an iPad 7th gen and the apple pencil and i’m so excited to start making art with procreate, i’ve watched probably 100 videos of people drawing and this is by far the best one. you couldn’t have explained this better!! thank you so much!
Your tutorials are exactly what I have been looking for as a noob! Thank you and please don't stop making them!! :) Once I get a little better I'm going to buy your brush/paper master set! I hope to start with the make art every day prompts very soon. Thanks again for all your hard work! :)
Bardot Brush is the best art-making channel I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. (I’ve seen A LOT) I believe this channel deserves more subs and likes than it has now! thank you for this tutorial
Great vid! Actually very helpful for any art software that uses masks, to understand when and how to use which kind of masks (since they're implemented pretty similarly everywhere) . Also, really making me want an IPad :) On a side note: great production value on the vid itself--really appreciated (not naming names, but some vids with some pretty annoying music, weird cuts, bad humor, etc.) Thanks for keeping a nice low-key vibe on this!
This video is so good for the actual tutorial or just for background music while I sketch, it’s not too distracting yet your voice is so soothing and lovely 😊
Thank you so much, I love the video style - how actual paint and tape was used to illustrate what masking meant. It helped me as a student to understand so many things not just procreate but mask in photoshop too. Thank you so much for this I'm subbing
Thank you so much for sharing this... I couldn't find anything on using Masks on Procreate this really helped me to understand the different ways to use the masks
This was so informative, thank you! I'm new to digital art and all I remembered was the alpha mask and couldn't figure out how to get it to work. Now I realize I need the clipping mask instead! I like your brushes too, I'll check your website out to look at them.
Bardot, your videos really are of great help. Everything is simple and digestible. I just bought Procreate a few days ago and they make me so motivated to get my hands ‘dirty’.
You.. are ... amazing! Thank you so much! I'm getting into digital illustration and you've been a HUGE mentor for me. Also, I moved cross country and left my watercolors behind, so I'm excited to buy your watercolor brushes for Procreate!! Thank you! ❤
This was wonderfully helpful, thank you!! I very much like how you showed how to use it in an art piece, made more sense to me. Thank you for your clear explanations. I am new to Procreate, have taken several online courses already, but this video made the most sense of masks to me. Yea!
I’m excited to try all of these various masking layers now. I just gotta say, that is a super cool pencil cover. I didn’t even realize it was there until the end. So used to see a “pencil” in someone’s hand that my brain didn’t pick up on it.
Great explanation of using masks in Procreate. I've only used clipping masks, but you're right - you do run out of layers if you use a lot of clipping masks/layers.
Loved your tutorial! Just what i needed! And it’s really great that you created an illustration from beginning to end applying what you just taught! Thx 🥰
Thank you so much for this video. I've been using Procreate for a little while now, but I am still not good with it. This video made me a little less scared to just have fun and not be too worried about making everything perfect right away. Also, your websites for ideas are just wonderful and are exactly what I've been needing!

I haven’t created any worthwhile art since I left art college over 30 years ago. Your demonstration has really inspired me. Thank you.
I've been using procreate for around 2 months now and have been SO AFRAID of learning how to do masks (it just seemed too complicated for a traditional artist like me lol).
