Okay, this is what I think I learned from the first five minutes of the video. The rest went too fast for me, so I'm just going to focus on this part since it's a brief explanation. I may be wrong, so please don't rely solely on me.
Alpha lock- When you apply alpha lock to a layer, you can only draw on the parts of that layer you've already drawn on. She drew the leaf, and when she applied alpha lock, she couldn't draw outside of the leaf unless she made a new layer.
Use alpha lock when you want to draw inside a layer without accidentally drawing "outside the lines" of that layer.
Clipping mask- When you want to draw on a certain part of a layer, while still being confined to that shape. It uses the layer beneath it as a reference for where you're allowed to draw, but you can modify that new clipping mask layer part independently without affecting the layer beneath it. She was able to use the leaf she drew as a layer she couldn't draw outside of, but when she applied clipping mask she was now able to draw veins of the new leaf without affecting or messing up the leaf.
Use clipping mask when you want to draw inside a specific layer, without affecting that specific layer and instead drawing on a new one that still uses the shape of the old one as a guide.
Layer mask- A mask that can change how parts of that layer show on your picture. You can use black to hide parts of the layer. Or you can use white to reshow it. Or, use grey to make it look translucent.
This mask is still a bit iffy to me, so give me grace here please.
Use clipping mask when you want to hide or show (or a mixture of both by making it transparent), parts of your layer.
Now, how to use it while making your art for different reasons and ways is still unbelievably confusing to me 'cause she went too fast. (Not her fault, easy mistake.) I think I'll just get used to using them through my art while I work.
Hopefully, this helped anyone else who was confused.

I love your illustrations but you go WAY TOO FAST for beginners to follow. This is actually my second time trying to follow this tutorial and it makes me want to give up around the 8 minute mark. It would be helpful if you could visually cue the viewers to what layer you're working on by clicking into the layers box and showing your audience each time as it's easy to get really confused - especially if this video is about masks. Also it seems like there are parts of this video where thigns are fast forwarded a bit - so if it takes you, an expert, a bit longer than what is shown to do something, imagine how much longer it is taking your audience. I understand that there may be greater appeal for your videos if they appear shorter, but for those of us actually working on the tutorial - a true step-by-step version would be much more beneficial. Perhaps you could upload two versions? One that's in-depth? In your tutorial you use many of your custom/paid brushes but for beginners who don't yet know whether this is for them it would help if you could let us know what free brushes we could use/should use to arrive at a similar end result. Since many of your viewers are beginners just looking to get into illustration and procreate, making your tutorials easier to follow, with default/free brushes so that people can feel a level of mastery would probably be beneficial. If you want to advertise your brushes to us and show us how much better they are in comparison at different points - that's great too, but please use the basic brushes or direct us to free options when doing these entry level tutorial videos.

It really is a game changer. I always wanted a cintique and a better computer. After using an intous in Photoshop for years I took the dive and grabbed a pro with the apple pencil. Absolutely amazing. Procreate is also about to drop a huge update, it is only getting better! As far as digital painting goes, it's really fantastic in my opinion. It's also incredible for recording and making music. Really really happy I dropped the money for a 12 inch and Procreate. I'd also like to add that Procreate is a one time purchase! Lastly, Adobe is going to be releasing a dedicated painting and drawing app, as well as Photoshop for iPad this year. Combine that with iOS 13 rekeasin in a couple days and one can have a huge arsenal at their disposal.

Has the mask feature in Procreate changed in updates (I realize I'm coming to this tutorial 2 years after it was posted)? At around 11 minutes, when you select the leaf layer, create a new layer, then create a mask and it is supposed to include the leaf layer because it was selected, I can't make that work. As soon as I click to add a new layer, the leaf layer is unselected. So when I make the mask layer, it's blank. I've run into this problem in several tutorials, so I'm thinking the mask or select function has changed, but I can't find documentation of it in any summaries of updates. Do you know if this has change? Or am I doing something incorrectly? I've gone back and followed the steps several times and it just doesn't work. Help!

So you only understand the theory but not the application, but this was great and you get a very cute drawing at the end . It’s worth pointing out that in the case of clipping and layer masks you can use the transform tool to move and change the mask and base layer independently in space on your page . Thank you Lisa you make digital art such fun.

So basically layer mask allows u to do anything reversible to your layer. At the same time, you can also edit the drawings on the different layer masks independently without affecting each other. Only downside is that you will have lots of layer. I will advise you to rename your layers so that you won’t get confused with your multiple layers of layers =D

      layer masks:
      - use "black" to erase underlying shape, to give it an outline
      - use "white" to go over the erased "black" to bring those erased items back into the artwork
      - use "grey" to bring back subtle details erased with "black"

I'm a total lurker - my goal is to motivate myself to save toward that awesome iPad Pro, so I'm really just doing what could be called "Procreate porn" (Ooh, that sounds bad!). But anyway, I loved this video. Thank you for making it! The whole time I was watching, I was thinking of related types of images I could do with my own creative inspiration - mainly, three to five year-old kids, who could easily be turned into little cartoon creations.

How do we bring in the picture so it's next to our work to copy?
Also, it's not just that it's quick, I think you need to slowmit down explaining exactly what and how these masks work. You understand it, but we've never done them before.
    Thanks.

Thank you for this video that solved a problem immediately. Clipping masks are working great for me. I do have a question that I’m not sure you have covered. Previously, I was using layer masks but I kept having the issues where a dark under layer was showing through on the edges of a lighter contrasting over layer. All in the same shape. I used the under layer shape that is dark to create the mask for the lighter color. Hope I am making sense. But is there a way to avoid the weird edges that happen with layer masks?

This was very helpful! I ended up buying your brushes so I could follow along better but it looks like with the new Gouache Paintbox set, you renamed some of the brushes and these names don't match what you instructed. It made following along a little tougher. I bet it would help people in the future if you had a pop up in the video that said the new brush name any time you referred to it by the old name, or maybe had the names in the description.
I'm just assuming that's what's causing the inconsistency because when I got the download file, the Gouche Paintbox has an option called "(Previous Version) Gouche Paintbox Old.Brushset"
    Thanks for making this video!

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. when I do the alpha lock, choose a brush, choose a color, it doesn't color. I've clearly missed some steps or there's something wrong with my app. So confused. Can't even finish the pot.

I had a lil baby suggestion. I love to use complimentary colors to add depth to shadows. So, sometimes I’ll lower the opacity of a brush just enough to barely see any color and use the complimentary color of the item I’m adding shadow to. So, If I drew an orange cup, I’ll choose a blue color, lower the opacity a bit, and color in the shadows. It helps the “flat” look. Obviously there are aesthetic stylistic choices etc. Just a suggestion 🙂

I have a question and it seem to come up several times in my art of Procreate to see if it’s even possible to do to make things easier/faster for me. Please excuse my terminology here, as I’m still new to this, so please bear with me on this….
So, in my last project, I created a flower (plumerias) boarder that had petals that were all made out of just lines-no color/shading to them. There we a lot of them all lined up. I decided after that was created that I wanted some wavy lines behind the flowers for the whole boarder. I didn’t want the lines going through my flowers, just behind them so I created a new layer and put the lines on that. Idk if there is an easier way of getting rid of those lines that are on top of the flowers, than to just go zoom into every single petal and erase all of the lines one. by. one. around the whole. entire. thing…😖 putting it on a separate layer did help, but idk if there’s a faster way of doing this as there were soooo many flowers each with 5 petals each.
So I guess what I’m saying is that I know that the features used here in this video are good for creating lines/shading/etc *inside* an object, but what about everywhere BUT that area where your design is? Is there a way to do that? Or am I stuck continuing to use the tedious zoom and erase option??
Hope that made sense! This question has been bugging me since it’s not the first time I’ve come across having to do this!
    TIA!!

Are all the brushes in procreate free?, it looks like you have A LOT of brushes so I was just wondering if you had to pay for any of those, or do ALL the brushes you haven't custom made come with the app. I love and am saving up for an iPad so I can use procreate!! it's been my dream for a while I also love you're videos there so detailed and amazing and helpful!

Great tutorial. I have a pic of a cat. It’s whiskers and soft fuzzy hair pokes outside of it’s outlined body. I want to clear the background but keep the whiskers and some of the fuzziness. How would you approach this? One way I was thinking was to create a mask layer, copy my cat into that layer use a black brush to hide all the content outside of the body outline, turn the transparency up and then trace with a semi gray brush the whiskers and fuzz I want to keep. Is that a good path? Thank you, Dave

There's no easy way to reference this video. I feel like I have to follow along exactly which makes the learning experience slow and clunky. You didn't conclude the video by answering the questions you posed in the beginning. Can someone rec any shorter videos that cover the same thing more succinctly?

Question about minute 8 when you clean up the basket by erasing some of the original basket. It looks like you went back and re-added more of the basket back, after the erase, and what I'm interested in knowing about that is how you made all of the layers with texture and color show up along with the base color of the basket? How does that work and why does that happen vs just the yellow base color of the basket show? Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks for the very helpful video, for someone like me who is a complete newbie to Procreate.
