Applause to anyone coming here to learn to drive a stick shift 👍
Driving a manual is a lot of fun!! I've taught a few people and they really appreciate and understand what it takes!
I Drive a Manual Too there Terrific.
Practice as you watch and follow along in real time. Get to learn how to drive standard while multitasking lmao
Im rusty need some brushing up and these are great helpful videos with alot of tips
I’m buying a type r… I’m learning as much as possible bcuz it will be my first manual. Wish me luck!! 😂❤
Type R is so sick
It is! Such a fun hot hatch!
Great video. It's alot harder to explain than most people think. You're definitely putting a great tutorial out there!
Glad you enjoyed the video! The Type-R was a great car to demonstrate this on too since it shows throttle position in the gauges
Just learned a couple weeks ago on a 21 Forte GT!! So easy, so fun, became fluent in 2 days thanks to your videos along with others!
Great to hear! I've been in the Forte GT and it's a fun manual to drive for sure!
Thanks for such a clear explanation and demonstration! You are one of the best instructors since it's so easy to follow and understand 👍
Thanks I appreciate that! Love sharing the skills of driving manual
I was gonna take some manual driving lessons that start at $250 but I honestly believe this one video is all I need lol. Thanks!
Glad it helped! It just takes practice!
Why do people stall?
1. Selecting the wrong gear when moving off; you must start off in gear one.
2. Lifting the clutch pedal up too high.
3. Not pressing the clutch when stopping.
4. Not selecting neutral when the car is stationary when you lift the clutch.
Great points for sure! Thanks for the comment!
No prob.
But someone argues we’re not perfect, which is true.
For sure
And they're all solved with more throttle. ô¿ô
The way I would solve it is make sure it’s in gear one, don’t lift the clutch too high, and set the gas to start the car. On a diesel car you don’t have to set the gas because it’s more torquey.
Very good tutorial. I am driving a new Civic Sport Touring Hatchback with manual transmission, and for some reason I am uneasy about shifting from 5th to 6th. Is there a lockout feature so I don’t accidentally shift in Reverse? Also, one time I shifted from 6th to 4th. This is my first car with manual in over 20 years.
nice, i was just watching your 370z video on how to learn manual, nice to see a new update
Thanks for checking out both videos! The Type-R was a great vehicle to make an updated video with!
It's been fun learning manual on my new FL5 (11th) gen Type-R! Great video 👍
Great to hear! That’s a fun car!!
Watching this because I already know how to drive stick but I’m interested in buying the Type R and I wanted to see how this vehicle in particular drives. Beautiful car!
Glad I could help! It’s a fun car!
There was a time that every vehicle leaving the red light had to pause for the 1-2. During that time, fuel was cheap, so that 1-2 took place higher than it does today.
It was marvelous.
Interesting
Thanks so much for this video! Buying my first manual car next week I’m so excited
Have fun! Glad you enjoyed the video. Manuals are a lot of fun!
What Type of Car did you Buy?
Thank you for making this and being so detailed
Glad you found this video to be helpful! What kind of manual are you driving!?
@@BrosFOURRSpeed I want a Toyota 86 and am working on being able to get one soon, I for now I'm in a 2006 Saturn ion 🙏
I have an Si Coupe. I love it. Very fun to drive. Don't know how it is with the Type R but with the Si, you really gotta let off the clutch slowly from first to second gear and then from second to third. Car is very jerky if you let off the clutch too fast (even when you let off of it slow, it's still a little jerky but not as bad. Mine also has bad rev hang so that might be a reason). Honestly, I'd love to try driving a Type R someday. Seems even more fun than the Si (even though the Si is super fun). Great video.
I've been learning manual on my new FL5 type R. I know what you mean about the jerkiness as I'm still trying to get it fully smoothed out between 1st and 2nd. The rest of the gear shifts are smooth.
I'll never forget the first time I tried to drive a manual. Let's just say that it did not go well! So much so that I didn't set another foot in a manual until I was about 26 but after that I was good. I personally prefer an automatic but still can handle a manual if needed.
lol it happens! Good thing you got it learned later on. Auto has it's benefit for sure. But nothing quite like a manual!
My Favorite Car
Im always Amazed to See them😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
Honda Civic Type R
Type R was really cool to check out! Perfect car to demonstrate this with!
Great video bros 4 speed
Thanks for checking it out! Fun time making the tutorial!
thanks for this video
Glad you enjoyed it! Are you looking to learn how to drive a manual?
Cheers Brian would the low reva apply to an NA car? Even for somewhere in the U.K where a lot of our cars are manual this was useful. I am sometimes stalling on small gradients trying to balance clutch and accelerator when parking so need to learn my clutch bite is lower. When I down shift will try some more rev matching as you suggest.
Yeah an N/A car will be exactly the same. Just take some time getting used to the throttle input and how it reacts. Feel out the clutch bite point and you'll get it down!
👍👍👍Awesome Video👍👍👍
What A Fancy Sportscar🚘
Thank you! 👍
I'm still struggling with the first shift but once I past the 3 to 6 I'm good but once I stop in a stoplight or in a stop it game over lmaoo 😅
5 time watching the video
Thats the hardest part for sure! Just stay calm with it and make slow movements. Try to keep the revs just over 2k. You got this!

Bro Im sorry for not being active 😓
BTW, I love the black and red accent of the seats of the TYPE R! 😇
Thanks for checking out the video! And yeah these seats are so cool looking in this Honda!
Genuine question Bros FOURR Speed!
When shifting at higher rpms, will I need to give it more throttle during shifts instead of a hair bit of gas like you mentioned in the beginning?
Also sometimes when shifting at higher rpms, as I lift the clutch to the bite point, I feel vibration as it engages..is that normal? Thank you!
Higher rpm you wont really need to. If you're driving the car hard and shifting quickly, they'll drop just enough on their own when you make your shift, to be nice and smooth. You might feel something if you're slow on the clutch in the high RPM. Normally if you're shifting in the high rpm range, you're probably trying to accelerate fast, and should be shifting a lot quicker then if your slowly accelerating and shifting at low rpm.
After starting the car and getting ready to drive from parked @3:15 putting the gear in 1st, does this work the same way when starting and intending to reverse/back up out of a parking spot?
Pretty much. Do the same thing but in reverse. Most likely tho, in reverse you wont even need to give it any gas
Hello, I have a question. After watching this awesome tutorial, I’ve successfully managed to start a manual car. Just like you showed in the video, I bring the clutch to the bite point and give it some gas. However, recently I’ve been told that I’m doing it wrong and that I have to press on the gas pedal a bit before bringing the clutch to the bite point. Why is this the case? Did I miss something in the video?? Thanks!
You can do it both ways. But when you're first learning, feeling out the bite point first gives you a good idea of where it is. As you improve on you skill you pretty much do the gas and clutch simultaneous and it'll be even smoother.
This video will help people coming new to learn to drive manual cars so that they never become extinct.
Hope so! Need more people to want a manual car so manufacturers keep making them
Ur the best
Thanks!
Now what i need is a Civic Type R
The Type R is a great car! Definitely worth it!
Same video tutorial with an automatic lol my paddle shifters scare me and made my clutch pedal disappear
Oh cool. I made a vid on tips for driving automatic a while ago
ua-cam.com/video/mR5zULValzo/v-deo.html
Hey there, my question is do i need to add gas before i reach the bite point. I noticed some car have high bite point.
Nope. Once it starts biting, that's when you can give it a small touch of gas ;)
@@BrosFOURRSpeedthank you for the reply, so if I wanna take off little quickly how do I do that? By way I'm so jealous of the type R man, i wish I had one instead of the GTI
Bought a FL5 and im terrified of all hills 😂
You’ll get the hang of it!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed your video was the most simplified as possible. Gonna practice at night time!
Glad you enjoyed it! Have a newer video I made in my manual Supra as well. So I got a few tutorials on the channel!
great vid
Thanks for checking it out! Fun time making the tutorial!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed It is sad that manual cars are dying
hopefully they start to come back with these new sports cars! Love the new M3 with a manual.
I bet this helped a lot of people who did not know how to drive Manual cars
Americans🤫🤫
Hope so! Love sharing good tips on how to do something with cars!
@@nooba2064 lol yeah only like 5% of cars in America are manual. So lots of us are just not familiar with them
@@BrosFOURRSpeed in Sweden its THE other way around , E46 320
Oh nice!
Do you give gas before you downshift or after you down shift
When the clutch is pressed in as you are moving the shifter to the lower gear, give it gas. That way, when you let off the clutch in get new gear, the revs will be a bit higher for a smooth shift
Great video!! It would be hard for me to learn how to drive a Manual because of my cerebral palsy, but it looks fun! I love electric cars! You got big feet lol! What size shoe you wear?
lol I wear size 10. Glad you enjoyed the video. Some great electric cars out there for yah!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed lol! Okay! Yes I love y’all electric cars, they are awesome
I also have cp, i can make this car go. i learned from a woman who was wearing a bikini back about 30 years ago. can also make a semi move as well. so theres that.
@@timfrancis6774 ok was it hard learning?
Some cool ones out!
can i dump the clutch when upshifting or do i need to slowly let off/find the bite point when upshifting?
Depends on how fast you're making the gear change. If you're trying to accelerate fast and really get up to speed you can do everything very quick. But if you're driving slow, you can let out the clutch slow
@@BrosFOURRSpeed thanks! Another question, is the new GR corolla hatchback an appropriate car for somone that's new to manual cars and has never driven a sports type car before? Haha, I appreciate the help
I could see that being a great car! Civic Type R or si would be good too. Or the GR86!
I’m gonna learn in a manual car later.
In the UK, you can drive a manual or automatic car after you pass. But in America, you can drive any car, even if you pass in an automatic car.
5 gears is a tad old fashioned for the modern society.
Most cars in Europe are manual.
6 gears is more modern than 5 gears. End of story.
From 2030, car manufacturers will not be allowed to bring new petrol or diesel cars to the UK, so the end of the stick shift may be there.
I don’t know why Europe has more stick shifts than the US and A.
Yeah I took my test in my dads 4Runner just to take away the shifting variable. I already owned my manual car lol. Most US drivers do the test in an auto
My Dream Car
Keep working towards it! The Civic Type R is a fun car!
Well with all Honesty i want a License & a 6 Speed Manual.
Toyotas shift way sweeter to me- because they have a cable- so it's smooth. Honda's are for race car drivers lol. You drive a stick or paddle shift so effortlessly. Ever thought about being a NASCAR driver Bri? Lol
Yeah a lot of new cars seems pretty smooth to shift. The Type-R was pretty easy. Felt similar to other cars.
Driving a racer would be fun! I'd love to do rally cross!
One additional benefit to learn to drive a manual car is that, one day if you want to learn how to ride a motorcycle, you will find it is so easy. :)
For sure! I grew up riding dirt bikes, so when I first drove a manual car. It was nothing new. I drove it fine first time with no stalling. So any vehicle with the concept of manual shifting if very beneficial!
What exhaust is that? It sure doesn’t sound stock😅
I'm not too sure. But this car had a lot of mods! Check out the link to Champion Car Company in the description. I'm sure they have a parts list on the listing
got my first car today (RX-8) only stalled once....only because the E-brake was on....
lol, yeah that will get you if you forget! But congrats on the car!
Im Learning Stickshift
Ben at it for 2 Months
Keep at it!
🚘Honda Civic Type R is Terrific Car🚘
It is. Very fun to drive
Please sir answer my this question. how exactly is clutch foot supposed to be lifted? I mean some says you should pivot the ankle in the floor, some says you should not pivot the let on the floor. What is the authentic way to leave the clutch while driving?
Honestly whichever way you feel most comfortable. I don't leave my ankle on the floor and pivot, I just push my whole foot, but it also depends on the bite point of the clutch. Some are farther then others, so you'd have to adapt and just what you feel comfortable in doing! While driving obviously the clutch will be all the way out and you can just rest your foot if you are cruising and not needing to shift gears.
Honda civic Type R is Faster Than a Hyundai Veloster N
Oh yeah! The Type-R is like the next step up in performance from the Veloster N. it's a great car!
oooOOOooo Type R
Yeah Type R is pretty cool!
I thought the typeR has an anti-stall feature?
It may or may not. But this video is not a tutorial on how to drive the Type R. It's a general how to drive a manual transmission car video. I just happen to be in a Type R
👍👍
Did you review the Type R, sucks not many Americans want manual now
I did not do a full review on the Type R. But we have some from years ago! ua-cam.com/video/9zHcQbQWEqI/v-deo.html
It's nice there are still new manual cars available from BMW, Porsche, and the muscle/import cars. Hopefully they don't die out.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed yeah, Europe, Asia, and Muscle
Eventually the manual gearbox will die out, considering that car manufacturers will not be allowed to make new petrol or diesel cars from 2030 in the UK and 2035 in France.
I dunno when for the US+A.
However, I’ve seen Opel make a stick shift electric car with just 145 horsepower. It will not come to North America though. I just find it illogical to be honest.
Hopefully more companies keep making some!
@@BrosFOURRSpeed I wish the Supra had it actually too
Can you imagine a person watching this video on their phone so he or she understands how to drive a manual transmission equipped car before proceeding immediately to steal one?
🤣😄🤣😄
I would take some more practice then watching it and hoping in right away to do that! I don't think someone would get very far hoping in for the first time, especially in a situation like that.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Not unless it's Brian O' Connor from the FNF series just watching it for no reason. 😁
On a more serious side one of the main reasons why I decided to get a sports car with a manual transmission as my next car are because of your manual transmission driving tutorials.😎
Thanks for the inspiration!
I remember the first time I had to stop on a climb with traffic, I had a Mercedes Benz behind me 😰 I was TERRIFIED 😂.
lol, yeah it can be a bit scary! You roll back farther in your head then you really do :)
How many times yall gonna remake this video?
Well it's been 2 years since I did the one in the R8. These video seem to do very well, so might as well do it in a different car to show it in better detail. Type R was a good car to demonstrate this. And we have over 100k new subs since the last one. So new viewers probably never saw the old ones.
Stick - the ultimate anti-theft device for those young thieves....
Still, the Z Nismo rocked - the R...naw, not feeling it.
That is definitely true since the majority of people can't drive manuals!
I had a nismo Z and it was such a fun car! I'd love to get another one some day!
When you already know what he is gonna say because you have already seen the old videos in the 370Z
haha nice man!! Yeah figured since it had been 3 years, I'd re-do the video in a different car for new views. Filmed the last one when we had maybe 20k subs
Type-R was a good car to demonstrate this on too!
The mexican people born knowing how to drive manual
I'm sure everyone has to learn at some point ;)
I’ve heard someone from America who learnt in a manual since he wants to go to Europe where manual cars are more common.
That makes sense!
I think that it would be better if you set the perspective of your video towards the road instead towards your seat, because the various conditions on the road before you are directly associated with your manipulations to your car, so we will be able to understand your driving actions more logically
I could see that visual helping but I’m strictly just showing how to do actually drive the car, I could redo it and add in that factor.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed a lot of thanks for your positive response. I live in a Southwestern city of China and I know there are still a remarkable number of drivers in China who stubbornly stick on their passion on driving the manual transmission car because of its relatively simpler mechanical design and higher efficiency as well easier to maintain compare to the automatic transmission car. Another reason is they can enjoy the fun during their driving course. I am also going to dive into this game. So I have watched some relevant videos they shared on the Chinese social media platforms. Although I have never learned to drive a real car but I just consider through my analysis that the various and continuously changed road conditions would be the seriously important factor for a driver to make the next plan and decision in his mind then react on his manipulating actions. Anyway I learned a lot from your videos
Damnit having a manual ment the odds of getting my car stolen were reduced by 98% before this video 🤬..
teaching your children???? Go ahead an order a new clutch now, install it once they know why you only taught them n to 1st and 1st to 2nd 🤣
hahah that is so true! Great theft deterrent right there ;)
I think the best way to teach your kids would be to get them into dirt bikes. I grew up riding and when I bought my first car, manual tC, I drove it with no issues. So start them on the dirt bikes and by the time a car comes, they know how to do it ;)
