- Checks to do when buying a used trailer

At towing and trailers we regularly get phone calls where people have purchased a used trailer over the internet without viewing them.
These trailers can very quickly escalate to end up very expensive.
Sometimes the costs of a used trailer and the parts required can exceed the price of a new trailer.
An unroadworthy trailer can be dangerous, let you down leaving you stranded, result in large fines and even injure or kill someone if it causes an accident.
This video will give you some simple checks to do on a trailer before you purchase one. Many trailers on the road are not regularly maintained which is required.
Quite often when you purchase an old trailer there are many parts that need replacing that are no longer available this video will explain easy checks that can be done to avoid these trailers.
I would strongly recommend not purchasing a trailer without inspecting first.
Once you have purchased the trailer there may be many parts that could have been missed, it is still a good idea to service the brakes fully and check other parts such as lights and general condition.
We have a video that will show you how to check a Knott brake system at

Really informative and thorough guide.
If I may suggest a new video topic, it would be really helpful to know your thoughts on the pros and cons of single/ double axle, braked/unbraked, wheels below or to the side, etc.
Thanks for posting.

how much play in a coupling is too much? have an old bradley coupling seems about twice as much play as a new alko i felt, play goes away when greased, that ok? thanks
Hi
it is not acceptable to have a lot of play in the draw tube of a coupling work on a maximum of 1mm where the drawtube comes out of the body.
When servicing a trailer we pump 2 squirts of grease into the 2 grease nipples on the top of the coupling if all play disappears with these 2 squirts of grease it is acceptable. Please note that the first time the trailer is used it will have play again.
thanks for the reply and informative videos
