1st Time Towing In UK & Made A Mistake

  • This is my first time properly towing a caravan in the UK. I pack-up for the first time, share what towing differences I can see between NZ and the UK, hook up and go. And it's embarrassing to share... but I mis-read the manual. I thought it said don't drive in the slowest lane, but it meant don't drive in the fastest lane!
I eventually make it to the Peak District and stay at a lovely campground with a secret entrance into the Chatsworth Park. The best way to relax after a stressful first drive.

Nothing but admiration for you. You look pretty competent to me. Take no notice of rude drivers, unfortunately there are quite a few in the U.K. Good manners in driving are becoming rarer everyday. Enjoy your trip and be safe. All the very best. Mick.

I'm so impressed with the way you dealt with driving in a new country, whilst in a new car, whilst towing a new caravan! The road narrow section at 3:22 is Portbury, and is clearly marked that you had priority, yet the numpty oncoming still fails to stop at the correct point and has to reverse. It happens frequently, well done for holding your own. Really enjoying your channel

Hi Karen, I think you did really well considering our roads are very congested and everyone is in a rush all the time. 173 miles doesn't sound a lot but on our roads you need to be 100% Alert the whole journey. I drive for a living, hopefully you'll find other road users courteous here but don't dwell on idiots with no patience. Enjoy your stay and the lovely weather we are having x

Overall I've found the drivers here are generally courteous. There's even been a couple of times in the tiny country lanes / bridges where locals have chatted when I've been unsure if it's a caravan safe road...

Englishman inFrance , in SA, there are drivers where they basically do not revs, they drop their load in a yard, then a special rig , picks it up, then PARKS it, now back in 1963, we were expecting the delivery, of some equipment on a job, but the driver said, you want this down there? He said no way, so I said I’ll do it but what’s in it for me,,,, so he thought about it , so I did , a loading dock about 200 feet , so I did, then he asked which trucking co, did. Work for , then told him I was just an HVAC/R technician, best US $ 150, I ever made. Cheers from NJ USA

Hi Karen, welcome to the UK.
Good to see you carry out the lift test to check that the caravan is securely attached to the tow hitch. So many people don't do this crucial safety check.
You do have to watch out when passing slip roads on motorways and dual carriageways where traffic joins the main carriageway from your left, especially at busy times. The official rule is that drivers of vehicles preparing to join the carriageway should always give way to vehicles already on the carrigageway and be prepared to stop if necessary. Unfortunately there is an expectation amongs many drivers these days that you will be expected to give way to allow them to join the carriageway. I've had a couple of very close shaves while towing my caravan, usually with large goods vehicles, simply forcing their way on and causing me to have to brake hard to allow them onto the carriageway in front of me, when I couldn't move over due to traffic passing me on my right. I think your reversing was excellent by the way.Take care and enjoy your caravanning.

    • @TravellingK
      @TravellingK  4 роки тому

@4:20 - @4:35 (going over the Avon Bridge) while talking about driving (or not) in the inner/outer (left hand) lane, you happened to be correct to not to drive in that particular left lane. Because that left lane is for turning off to Bristol Avonmouth and South Wales. You CAN drive in it for a while but need to get out eventually because it peels off. A clue is the different style of the dashed white dividing line.

    • @TravellingK

Your video dash cam is very clear. I should also mention that you drive much better than many of us Americans. Of course here in the states when you are driving on the freeway slower traffic should be on the right or right lane and faster traffic should be to the left our far left lane. Although on a given day most people here just do whatever they want to do and ignore the rules! At least you realized your mistake and moved into the proper lane. Driving in another country can be quite an adventure i'm sure, lol.

just watched you on Cruising the Cut. You have a new Australian subscriber. I have an Adria caravan very similar to the Bailey. I didn't find this out for about a year & sort of freaked out after a long drive. When you connect up the van you change the fridge to 12v it bleeps until you start the engine then the higher charging voltage comes through from the alternator all good. I normally arrive at my destination, disconnect the van, plug in the mains, change the fridge over, all good. This time we were moving on 1st thing the next day so we didn't unhitch. I went into the van to change the fridge over to mains, all good. Went for a walk on the beach, came back on dusk to find that none of the 12v lights, etc. were working. Got out the headtorch, voltmeter scratched my head contemplated a week without 12v power. Then I thought what's different and went and unplugged the van from the car. Suddenly everything worked. I don't know if this common to all vans or just Europeans?

Dont worry about merging traffic while towing a caravan in the inner (left) lane of a motorway or dual carriageway. The merging traffic will tend to work around you, like they also avoid lorries. Different from driving a car when, illogically, some merging drivers expect you to get out their way.

    • @TravellingK

Ah slip road drivers forcing their way out. Very dangerous & stupid.
I have seen this where the person on the slip road kept their speed up, & drove at the traffic on the motorway, all the lanes were full, & moving at speed with no gaps.
So the idiot pushes out in an aggressive manner, & then causes an accident.
This was due to them driving out without any consideration for others, which meant the vehicle they pulled in front of got hit from behind, when they were forced to brake!

Your video with David and Cruising the Cut brought me here. I recently purchased a travel trailer (caravan in the USA). I find the design differences between UK and US trailers to be interesting. I'm sure road width and quality play the major factor. Your caravan is slung much lower and is an ingenious design of compactness. Ours is 25 feet long, 8 feet wide and 12 feet tall. It has an offroad clearence so I can take it down unimproved roads to boondock (camp without any hookups). Quite enjoyed the video. Well done on the backing by the way. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Take as many looks as it takes to get it right.

I really like your channel. It is filmed & edited really well, and is nice, and pleasant to watch. Thank you for taking the time, and effort to do it.
Regarding the size of vehicles here, as I have been to various different places, and events, I have seen a variety of many larger RV vehicles.
There is also a very large American influence here in the U.K. Therefore we do see 5th wheel units 8 feet wide with slide outs, & full coach size rigs with slide outs.
During your time here if you had been to Truckfest or an American car show you would seen a lot if them at one location. Along with a great variety of custom cars, hot rods, one off specials, day vans, full size RV's pushers, & pullers.
The amount of different vehicles seen here on U.K. roads is actually more diverse, than is normally expected it tends to be assumed that we do not have, or have not seen the slide outs, goose necks etc here, but the fact is we have them here, and have a great interest in them being here along with anything else that adds to the scene.
Variety is the spice of life, and makes life more interesting.
Please keep up the great work with your videos, as they are very much appreciated.
