A Smoky Wonder - This 5.9 Magnum Swapped 1964 Dodge Dart Needs Help (Because I Used The Wrong Parts)

- This is Mike's 1964 Dodge Dart GT. I did a video on this car a couple years ago. It had a smoking problem then, and it has continued to smoke ever since. It turns out that all of this could have been avoided if the assembler of the cylinder heads (ahem, me...) had paid slightly more attention to detail. As with most of my projects, there will probably be plenty of other useful things to learn along the way, so let's dive in and fix this Magnum for good.
"Hot dog in a hallway.😂" I've uh heard that before. But not about valve stem seals.
Like how....
Better than a hot dog in a freshly renovated gymnasium 😂
@@ronaldrey8474 best to leave it alone I think.
Yeah… let’s not go there 🤣
@@wiggyjones that's what she said.... 👍
OK... the TRUNK gasket diagnosis. I am officially impressed. My 64 Dart... fumes.. and a CO reading of 10 PPM on my Home Depot, CO detector. New trunk Gasket.. and Bingo. Zero readings on the CO Meter. Also... the gig with the Vacuum operated metering rods... "Superb" and I am feeling more confident about the younger generation. Congrats! I am a huge FAN now. :)
Oh yeah. The trunk gasket is a classic - I’ve encountered that several times now. Hey, some of us kinda know what’s going on 😅 thanks!

Love the little touches he’s done on that Dart. Great little cars.
Great stuff, sir!
I saw this was a fairly long vid and I figured well. I’ll watch some now and some later but here I am watch the whole thing. I cannot stop watching it. I change my whole afternoon to watch your vid. Keep the bids coming, Jamie. I can’t stop watching them!
Thanks! I appreciate that! Don’t mind if I do. Haha.
Very nice car. My friend had a 1969 dodge dart back in the 90’s we put a 360 in. it lifted the tires off the ground street the first time out!
I really like these Darts, probably more than the later ones. Sweet ride!
I love that red metal flake on the spear. I know metal flake isn't era correct for the car, but somehow it works.
I agree! It looks sweet.
Me too
Metalflake was available in 64 even if not used at the factory. An owner could have had it done for extra pizzazz.
@@mrdanforth3744 Oh. I didn't know that. I thought it was a '70's thing.
@@JimmyLoose Metalflake was introduced by the Dow chemical company in 1959 or 60. A few cars were done by Barris and others, then it received wide publicity in a Car Craft magazine article in February 1961. So it was widely known from 1961 on. Not many body shops used it because it was complicated to apply properly but there was usually one shop around that did custom paint and they could handle it.
I had a 5.9 out of a late 90’s Durango rt in my 79 power wagon. Bit of a cam, edelbrock performer intake and 4 barrel edelbrock. Even with the 203 transfer case in 4wd all the time and big mud tires that 360 moved that truck with easy and sounded amazing doing it. Great engines, the 318’s as well 👍
Man I LOVE the Crown Royal shifter boot - boy you would love the valve spring compressor that I have, it is antique was used by my father who was a diesel mechanic
Great job on video...your enthusiasm and honest humor makes it all the more interesting...I'd love to make it back out to WA to check out your shop.
Love the foxbody. Something about fords and mopars that just go together. The GM cars can stay by themselves. But fords and mopars are the ones that are the cooler cars IMO
Good info nuggets. I just got my 100%, Grade A, Pure, Chineseium, LA/magnum intake this week.
Nice car, it will be a great car when the owner addresses the issues you mentioned.
Love the fox body stangs........ ran a 89 or 90 5.0 in my CJ crawler years ago...... fun times.
Love your videos. Especially your endless sarcastic demeanor towards the obvious and not so obvious. Makes watching fun. Keep up the great work!!..oh, and don't forget to bust uncle Tony's ass with the demon...
Cool car. Would be nice to see it with all of the pedal and shift issues alleviated. Good vid.
Good job with another informative video sir. The car is very appealing and with that 360 it's a bit of a sleeper.
I didn't know about the cold idle adjustment on Edelbrock. Got some tinkering to do now. Thanks.
Cool little car! I like the color combination too! Great engine swap for it! Great fix too!👍
Cool Capri. The LA engine was tepid in the 80s as Mopar was into 4cl turbo development. However that series ended very well with the Magnum. The decision to scraping the rocker shaft aside (that was news to moi). Nice work!
Inspiring seeing exact same ultra-super pro custom non-leaking,non-melty, I can clearly see how bad I need a fuel tank, fuel filter system.
Deadly idea on the flexplate! I'm gonna use that one next I need to. Last flywheel I got for my dart was a McLeod 130 tooth with bolt on weights. Used it for La 360 with magnum heads and a modded La intake. I believe I have the weights to bolt on for magnum 5.9 crank balance... but don't quote me on that. Also... if you're interested in running solid roller magnum lifters... I have a recipe you will enjoy. It costs zero $$$
Zero?! That’s interesting. I have a flywheel with a bolt on weight, and I think the weight that was bolted on was also for a Magnum. The only problem was that I put it behind an LA…
@@DeadDodgeGarage I've been running a billet roller cam on my 408 stroker for years. I converted the roller lifters by removing the guts, then took an old set of lifters I had laying around. They were either mopar or comp cam's lifter's. Took the guts out of them and found the main body inside was near perfect to swap out into the magnum lifters. It took up the gap left by the spring and spacer near perfect. Had just enough room to fit the steel retainer spring back in. Did this around 12 years ago and been using the same set of lifters in my stroker and when it blew up I used them in a hot little 318 magnum and back to the stroker when I fixed it. Adjustable rockers needed of course but it didn't cost me any more than some time in measuring and digging through my stash of lifters. If you want, I had them out currently and I can put up a quick video on my channel to show what I did exactly and you decide 🤘🏼
Love it thinking of doing a magnum swap in my D 100great video Jaime
Love the crown royal bag as a shifter boot 🤣 never seen that before
I like it!!!! But isn't no barracuda 🤘🏻🏁🎶🎵💯✌🏻👍🏻
Exactly!
Needs the nice valve covers like your demon, I love how they look and they never deform and leak 👍
It was originally in the plan but we simplified the plan. Haha.
Nice! I want to do a magnum swap on my 85 Ramcharger - someday. Learned something new on the Edelbrock - thanks!
Heij! Big fan of the red candyflake dash! You Mericans did a cool thing in the days with the huge flakes used. Harley Davidson did a hole motorcycle like that, as a kid I had it in the Easy Rider magazine sold in Germany and I was hooked, the needle went right thru the arm- that´s how hooked I was- kinda still am. That candy flake Harley looked so cool with its fifteen rear lights and lit antenna tips...
This is a cool car- I even could live with the pedals but the shifter I´d rip out at once, too. Replace it with an 8ball thing.
I am used to a more spohisticated, light shift feel where the gates are where they should be- this seems rather a loose proposal, a slight hint.
All the cars I had were manuals, my old 67 Beetle had the nicest shift of all, the 73 VW Bus the worst. Its gates were like these.
G´Day and Kind Regards
I went with an electric fuel pump when I put the 95 360 in my 78 150. But I did use a mopar performance m1 intake and 650 edelbrock along with the 46rh automatic and Chrysler ignition. Ran great for about 20 years but she's laid up with a cracked frame by the steering box for now
A few years back, I remember that everybody and their mother was looking for a late 60’s or 1970 Dodge Dart (especially GT’s) that were not totally rotted away. I assume the magority of them had the old reliable slant 6 but what was the
biggest engine, that was a regular production car (not Mr. Norm type) you could get in a Dart?
And before people laugh at the slant 6, there were cabs in my city in the late 90’s with 100’s of thousands of miles on them that had the original slant 6 engines in them. They finally junked them because the rest of the car parts were getting beat or the cars were rotting away….but the engine were still running in most of them. Amazing!
273 V8 was the only option until ‘67, at which point 383 big blocks started finding their way into the new, larger A-body - and then the 340 arrived for ‘68. Also in ‘68, someone at Chrysler finally had the idea to shove a 426 Hemi in the Dart. That doesn’t count as a regular production car, but you could order a 440 in ‘69 Dart if you really wanted.
@@DeadDodgeGarage A 440 monster in that small car…that must have been something else!
Great looking car mate..we never got those here ( Australia), love the shape.... Nice job on the Magnum too, sounds like you know your way around them hahaha . The Edelbrock carb is wizardry down here...Holley dominates the aftermarket but theres a few starting to appear now, they look way easier to tune ... 4 speed cars are cool...thanks for sharing...Ive only been subbed a little while and am working through the backlog
Oh yeah. They are so much easier to tune and live with. And they don’t puke gas everywhere like the Holleys do. Haha. Thanks! Appreciate it.
I have a 94 Lightning with a stroked and supercharged engine. I have factory roller setup that’s using a Comp cam and roller rockers. The valve train sounds like a sewing machine.
That’s not quite a Magnum. Haha.
@@DeadDodgeGarage my point was more that maybe roller setups with high lift are just noisy.
I’m still a Mopar guy at heart. Actually I love all the American muscle cars, but Mopars are my favorite.
Beautiful car
Thanks Jamie
Those magnum rocker arms look just like 80's and 90's SBF pedestal rocker arms, like exactly the same.
I'm having the same problem with the positive lock valve seals on my J headed 65 273 .30 over Dart GT.Ive just not had the motivation to change them to umbrella type. Its on the things to do this winter list, sigh.
Why did you feel it necessary to tell everybody that your engine is 30 over wank wank
That exhaust looks like a crime
Welcome to early A bodies, enjoy your stay…
Like you said, it could be better. If you get it dialed in it would make one helluva sleeper!
10:55 "FOUND ON ROAD DEAD GARAGE?" LOL!
The owner did a great job on this car! I hate when you make a small mistake, and it turns around and bites you in the ass!
Jammie thanks for the email. Ive had wayyyy too much gin to make it through the video (i think i mentioned im an alcoholic) But what ever is going on with this dark i love it and fully supported the guy building shit himself. Too many parts jockeys just throwing things on cars not doing their own thing anymore.
ANY WHO WHEN IS THE TURBO SLANT GOING TO HAPPEN
Lol you need alcohol
I don’t remember if you mentioned it explicitly, but it was certainly implied and assumed 😅 and I don’t knoooooww… some time.
Good content and thank you for the carb content....thanks...🔧🔧🐐👍
Now, for the 1965 Barracuda!
DeJesoosChristy, 12 years & still plenty of "room for improvement"? Truly, the project never is finished....
No, they never are.
The headlight bezels on those are little bit different to the Valiant ones are they not ?. I like that red paint on the interior, and in the side trim, it looks to be candy red over coarse metal flake, very nice. In the eighties I had a 1966 Valiant, black exterior, black interior including the head lining, and I painted the interior door tops candy red over gold mettalic, it looked great .I even put a translucent red plexiglass disc in the interior overhead dome light so that at night there was a red glow . Oh, and it had blue dots in the taillights. I wish I still had that car. 😢
I had one of those. Put a 383 in it. I put the exhaust manifolds on backwards and had exhaust coming out the front. Could burn one tire the length of the quarter mile. Blew out the 7 1/4 rear end pretty quickly.
That works! We actually talked about installing Magnum manifolds backwards on this car but decided it wasn’t worth the trouble.
@@DeadDodgeGarage yeah, I couldn’t figure out how to run an exhaust without doing that. Also, the transmission literally was against the tunnel. I considered that a safety feature lol. I sure had fun with that car tho.
Whatever happened to the late '70s Mopar 400 engines? I know they were smog engines as other manufacturers were also, but they sure ran great with lots of torque. I had a Chevy 400 in a 75 Malibu Classic Estate wagon with factory 4 barrel. Ran awesome but did drink fuel.
After watching several of your videos over the last month, what does it mean that my inner monologue is starting to have your voice 😂
I don’t know what it means, but you should get that checked out by a professional 😅
Guess it could be worse.. it could be Bobcat Goldthwait or Gilbert Gottfried
Cool Capri had one like that
Question then some praise. I'm about to reinstall the original 340 exhaust manifolds back into my 70 340 Duster. Should I use exhaust manifold gaskets? I've heard arguments both for and against.
Thanks for providing tips on adjusting the electric choke! It's especially helpful for tips on adjusting high idle on warm engines, as the chance of tuning on a warm engine is a lot easier than to try to adjust the choke on a cold engine. Thanks for all you do, Jamie!
If they are milled perfectly flat and smooth, you’re good! Otherwise, I would use a gasket.
Great work!
@38:00 min mark: Jamie displays frustration with viewers who somehow don't understand you must tighten screws back down on carb vac doors.
@41:00 min mark: Jamie bips engine a bit to show vac doors popping up, then cuts video away without tightening screws.
😄
The Edelbrock 650 will probably work fine. BUT, Yer sure can't beat the street cred of (my Fav.) 750 Duel feed Holley!!!!,,DUBS,,,,
If I was running a single on this, that’s what it would be. Same as I’m running on the demon.
I reckon the spring steel sheet metal dogbone hold down plate amplifies the lifter noise. Seems to be common across all makes of engine that use them.
That would make a lot of sense. But I can’t say I’ve ever noticed it being an issue on a regular fuel injected Magnum. There’s a whole lot of intake in the way on those.
I love the white with the red
Cool , time for a video
Wow! Amazing car!
You seem to be having issues putting valve retainers on. Have u tried the sandwich bag method? Putting everything in place with the retainers in the hole of the keeper. Put a sandwich bag over it tightly (sorta) put a socket on top, both hands on top of socket and quick downward push. It works for me.
I can’t visualize how this works. It sounds like voodoo.
@@DeadDodgeGarage it did to me first time I tried it. Then the old guy showed me. Blew my mind
@@DeadDodgeGarage the plastic sandwich bag, a piece of plastic shopping bag will work, keeps the retainers tight to the valve stem. When u compress the spring they slide down the valve stem and into place.

That's for the Edelbrock tune up tips and who did the Holley carb work for you, I'm in desperate need of a carb rebuild 🤔
Well, unfortunately I just went to double check his name and learned he passed away a year ago. His name was Chuck with Gorilla Carburetors in Washington state.
Hi Jamie, what can I do to fix a header leak on the driver side? gasked is new, probably the header is warped. It is a graphite style gasket now. Engine has aluminum heads. Headers have screws all over. Should I use studs on front and back of the heads?Does this make a difference to get more pressure on the gasket? Should I use remflex gaskets instead of the graphite ones? I do not like to invest in new headers, fitment issues etc. Awesome video, keep up the great work 😎
Bolts or studs, it makes no difference. Remflex will almost certainly help. They’ve always worked great for me.
Where you at, bro? Aberdeen? Hoquiam? Ocean Shores? Im in Clallam Bay, halfway between Forks and Neah Bay.
Yes, I’m in Aberdeen. I know where you’re at. If you see a dark red ‘74 Swinger around, I sold and delivered that fine unit to a gentleman there.
Nice video Jamie, so what is it with mopar lifter problems with clattering? they all seem to suffer from the same problem even the Hemi 6 made here in Australia
I wish I knew. I thought I might know on these, but I was mistaken.
Love edelbrock carbs but I’m not sold on the electric chokes either. I’ve allegedly wired a few of them fully open before.
Oh I’m a firm believer. Unless you’ve got some really whacky cam, an edelbrock with an electric choke gives the nice reliable starts people spend thousands on EFI to try to get.
Mopar A Bodies Forever 🇺🇸
Good work. I really enjoyed this video. So what kind of shifter is on this thing? In my opinion the only shifter that should be used on an A-833 transmission is a Hurst Competition Plus.
It’s the same standard Hurst shifter we’ve got on everything else. It’s almost identical to the competition plus, but it’s less competitiony. Lol. He made the handle himself.
What's your feelings about horizontal vs. vertical fuel filter placement? Advantages or disadvantages?
If there is any difference at all, it’s news to me.
Cool video as always i watched the whole thing
Thanks!
Safe to say you don't need to use the flexplate/LA flywheel combo if you pick up a 360 magnum flywheel?
I have heard that there are now 5.9 weighted flywheels for the 10.5” car four speed setup. This was the third 5.9 Mag four speed swap we did, and at that time either that wasn’t available, or I didn’t yet know it was available. The only factory 5.9 Magnum flywheels are the big truck size. Also, if you want the factory EFI to work, you will need the crank sensor windows. Sandwiching the flex plate also solves that problem.
my wife is selling a van i got to cut into a truck .just for the fun of it. think i still have some of the plastic from in side. told her to put to much on it so it would not sell. if some one made her and offer. she would most likely take it. she,e about to take a trip. and money for fun stuff would be nice venture van. brakes keep locking up from no moving. runs pretty nice. vans are nice for winter parts runs. it is mostly gutted. do not leave the radio on. found out what that does.back road into westport. left side about three blocks before four way stop. if you want. has a furn growing in it.
I already have three vans too many…
figured i would ask. make a good fishing pole holder. guy across the street was hinting at wanting it. he fishes alot. thanks for the reply. i'll be watching thank you.
Magnum heads oil the rocker arms in a totally different manner than most LA.
They sure do.
Yeee Yeee 😊
😅
My channels gonna be called fried ford garage, also YES DO TYE FOXBODY,!!!
What is the part number for that alternator belt because I have the same problem with the one that the parts counter shows and I need the correct belt. Thanks
I don’t remember, but it’s easy enough to either figure out the next part number down, or go to the back room and grab the belt to the left of the one the computer says. I was a parts guy for some years and know how belts are numbered, so I just figured out the next number down and they sent it to me.
I don't believe I have ever cleared off 'The List' on any vehicle.
I've made peace with 'Running & Safely Driving' level with 'To Do' issues, then add new issues- more rattles, a taillight is a bit dim, mirror vibrates above a certain speed, ...' The List' never really ends....
Sounds right to me. I don’t think it’s possible to reach the bottom of the list - the universe makes sure of that.
What was the car that the front sway bar came from? I have a 66 plymouth I've been trying to find a sway bar for
He built that himself in the college metal shop when he was in the welding program.
They are exactly an edelbrock airgap... honestly I've seen edelbrock ones looking more rough
This car is cool
Just because I have a loose screw doesn't mean I didn't tighten it :-) The old time blinkers on big trucks got hot quick. Don't know if that's a cause for the blinker/brake light thing?
No it’s a failure in the turn signal switch itself. It’s something I’ve seen a few times on these earlier cars.
Capri.... YAY!
Would your friend notice if you returned the car without its tail light lenses? Ary needs a set.
He definitely would 😅
@@DeadDodgeGarage OK I am going to tell Ary I tried.
High temp silicone both sides of the exhaust gasket, let dry over night and install.
I never have, and I don’t think I ever will. I’d rather just fix the root issue if I can.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Could you remove the exhaust manifold & do some Dremel-type grinder surgery & fix the clearance issue?
Jamie, love your content from Louisiana brother. Are those 150$ frame stiffening brackets worth it on a 71 plymouth roadrunner? They are a little more nimble than the 68-70.
Personally, I don’t think those extra stiffening components are worth the trouble unless you’re doing really extreme things with the car. I like sway bars and subframe connectors. I think that’s a good place to go.
@@DeadDodgeGarage Gotcha

If you say so!
Yeah but does the gas gauge work 😊😏
No cause it's same fuse as horn. Hehehe
No, I fixed the gauge itself on the bench years ago but it has never worked in the car. Lol.
like the fact owner made his own parts when he could, out of what ever he could. Lots of info here, removing a holley... argh been using'em for years, yes they are a pain in the butt but tis what i prefer, with a chock that is. when filters start to run dry it's my vapor lock rearing his ugly self again, not the pump. check my vlog if you can stand it, check out my bizarre solution on the matter! Thanks for the video!
I’m not sold on that being vapor lock. It was warm that day but the car had only driven like a mile and sure wasn’t hot. I’ve got a Holley double pumper on the Demon for go fast purposes and it’s great. That car also has all of the other parts needed to make ridiculous high RPM fun happen. But the Edelbrock is my guy for any street car.
