When I was a kid, I couldn't wait for Sunday night. After the evening news was over, we descended into the basement of our home, dimmed the lights, and immersed ourselves in a new age of sci-fi television, thanks to the success of Star Wars, which was released a year earlier. I am so thankful that I experienced the original Star Wars in the movie theaters. I think we went about 3 times to see it. Then along came Battlestar Galactica, which carried on the tradition. What a great time in my life.

From modern perspective, the original BSG looks like cheap copy of star wars and star trek. 2004's reboot looks so much better in terms of how it written and developed in general.

When you consider this was a weekly serial in the late 1970s, this show actually had very impressive special effects and the stories were typically quite good.

    • @TheLightning50
      @TheLightning50 6 років тому +26

Yes, it did, I was alive then, and a Teenager, & this was one of my favorite shows, but what you spoke of was also it's doom, the special effects used then was so expensive that they couldn't afford to do it anymore, though fans were disappointed the series was cancelled, they tried a less expensive way through Galactica 1980 that didn't need nearly as much special effects but that series was a huge disappointment

    • @Phrancis5

Yeah, I loved this show as a kid. Even though they recycled so many shots, the lack of CGI made this a very expensive production and it kinda ran outta steam plot-wise. It's always fun to laugh at "Galactica 1980"! In some ways I appreciated the simplistic plot-lines and dialog when compared to the reboot. That one obviously had fantastic VFX and I loved the dark realism, but it became overly complex, and the resolution got too deep and weird. I guess that's what happens when you have sci-fi shows with vague story-arcs and producers don't know how many seasons it will last. Andromeda, B5, Westworld...

Larry Johnston True. The series was a huge hit, but the budget was too large and the show was cancelled. The ratings were very good, and the show had a large fan base but CGI didn't exist back then and the effects were expensive; that's why there was so much stock footage. Sadly, after one season they pulled the plug.

Wow. That is a lot of money, even by today's standards. I wish they could have kept it on the air for at least 1 or 2 more seasons. Yeah. They really couldn't explore the more dark stuff on the show. The network let them do a little darker story telling in the early episodes but the network wanted to minimize violence. Hell the network made them switch the Cylons from aliens in suits to robots to minimize the killing :)

Yeah. I really enjoyed the reimagined BSG up until the final 5 plot started. I considered that one of the most spectacular shark jumpings a show has ever made. But the first 2 1/2 seasons were some of the best television ever produced. Ron Moore ruined the show trying to be unpredictable because fans kept figuring out the plot.
The original had great roots but television wasn't ready for that kind of story told seriously. The network wanted a Star Wars knock off that was safe for the whole family:)

That's the thing I least liked about the reboot, the death of hope by the end. The reboot started strong, but by the end, events had shattered hopes for the rag tag fleet's survivors repeatedly. While the finale was shot as if they had arrived at a safe harbor, the actual situation those survivors found themselves in was grim. They had: No real tech or ships, saber-tooth tigers (really)would be hiding in those tall grasses, and Cylons are still a potential threat. Very grim, I'd say.

By attempting to be "Realistic", they introduced problems within the show. They showed the Vipers using rockets to maneuver. How could those thrusters have enough power to be used with the huge main engines, AND how could they carry enough liquid fuel to sustain a fighter during a battle? They apparently have jump drives, that can move them to another solar system, but they rely on gas propulsion otherwise. They are much smaller than the fighters we have now, yet EVERY maneuver uses fuel. That seems to be a bit impractical for that role. Where does the energy come from for the FTL drives? The FTL drives are never explained. Why not have an unexplained tech for normal operations as well?

Often an unexplained "future tech" is the best solution. (shiny bolts of light, that make things explode) Sometimes, you have to make a choice between "Relatable to the present" and "Representing an advanced future" Centurions with unlimited bullets makes a good crime drama, but maybe not the best sci-fi.
The fighters have the same problem. Where do they store all those bullets? They fire at an extremely rapid rate, so they must carry a lot of them.

Baa Baa Blacksheep about the WWII fighter squadron obviously had influence on Battlestar galactica and you can bet some of the old time fighter pilots got hooked on it for the similarities, my dad was an airforce mechanic and he loved BG original. I really feel privileged to have grown up in this era of BSG, Buck Rogers, Saturday Morning cartoons of the 80s and all the incredible toy lines and comics. I know there tends to be a critical gaze set back upon TV networks and studios all-out drive to create the next big thing ala Star Wars and it's toy line (the advertising directly to kids via TV shows etc). But for those of us who were kids in those days, it was an unprecedented era of riches; people were trying new things all the time, all sorts of whacky and crazy gimmicks, and even the most brazen rip-offs still had their charm. No. That wasn't the Pegasus. There was a cloven hoofed body in the wreckage, presumably a demon, and yes, Count Iblis was supposed to be the Devil. They cut the scene, too scary for kids back then. That's what Apollo and Starbuck didn't want Sheba to see. It was not the wreckage of the Pegasus, but some other large ship that Iblis had visited, and wasn't as fortunate as the Galactica was in getting rid of him. The ships of light were occupied by benevolent beings, but they couldn't interfere without being asked, as that would have taken away the people of the Colonial fleets free will to choose between light and dark.

The other Battlestars left their defenses down in a gesture of good will, even though Adama urged them to do otherwise, and got owned pretty quick.
As far as construction goes, it is established that construction on the Battlestars was fairly standard, and the Galactica was at least 500 yahren old by the time of the show.

I wished the powers that be, could have made more eps of this series. I think it was on the ABC network, and that is the worst network in history of canceling shows. I always wished they made an ep about the reptilian race that created the cylons.

I liked how the senior Cylon "OFFICERS" were GOLD, not silver, and that their voices were of a lower pitch...

Please give us a Battlestar Galactica movie based of the original tv series.

Yes please! 👍😎 Along with some sort of prequel(s) focusing on the earlier 'millenniums of time' on other Star Worlds perhaps predating Kobol? 🤔☺️

Without the original cast? I won't go see it and I won't consider it Galactica cannon.

The OG Battlestar Galactica was one of the greatest Sci-Fi shows ever made. It's sad that they never made a Season 2 for this great show cause Galactica 1980 really sucked.

I agree that it was an error to revive BSG as Galactica 1980. It didn't have the drama, action and suspense the original had.

And Ron Moore's so-called 'reimagined' Galactica was an even bigger mistake! There should have been a legitimate continuation, while Ron Moore should have made something entirely different and NOT appropriate the Galactica name/title! 🤔🤨☹️👎

Those Cylon Fighters had some nice comfortable seating for the chairs for supposed robotic creations. Yep. Good to know such creatures will need comfortable padding on the chairs. And here I just noticed that after all these years lol.

It's a shame they had to deal with such a small special effects budget.

Probably didn't want to destroy an expensive model for one episode.
Iirc the one in the pilot left no debris either.

Perhaps due to complete vaporization, whose energy generated an expanding cloud of energetic superheated evaporation of flourescing gas remnant molecules?

No budget for that. 1970s Star Wars and Trek were also limited, no debris fields. You didn't actually start seeing those until CGI got advanced enough in the mid 2000s.
