    This recording derives from a performance with Solti that opened the newly refurbished Palais Garnier in 1996. In this concert performance of what was her last Mozart role debut, Fleming already shows a great musical and dramatic affinity for the Mozart role that (along with the Countess) perhaps suited her best not just vocally, but temperamentally too. There are several moments of pure magic here (listen for instance at 1:13). She sang 10 full Mozart roles in her career, including all three Don Giovanni women - her Don Elvira can be heard to great effect on her Mozart arias album, and in very fast live versions early in her career in a troubled production at La Scala with Muti).
    Later in 1996 she did some further live performances of Don Giovanni in London, also with Solti (and Bryn Terfel as Don Giovanni) which were later released on CD. I love Solti's Mozart conducting here and elsewhere: he has a superb sense of Mozart's vitality, sensuous orchestral sonorities, rhythmic verve, and the composer's peerless sense of operatic atmosphere. Her Met performances from the year 2000 mark one of the high points of her career - the DVD is available there too, and many wonderful clips of that production are easily available on youtube.
    This aria has been excerpted and uploaded before but never in such good sound as far as I know. I will post other clips too in due course.

    Gorgeous Donna Anna and so easily sung... so liquid singing... she easily rivals Sutherland in this role (and in her Alcina and Rodelinda) and 3:42 classic early Fleming always adding a bit of difficulty in everything she sang to prove she was singing with a Surplus of Voice

    One of the best live recordings ever. Say what you want about Renee, but she is in total control of her technique here with her sublime tone. Notice how Levine pulls back just a bit on the tempo on the last “sentira pieta di me”. Perfect!

    I love her legato. She sings so exquisitely on the breath. What is there NOT to like!! Or love for that matter. She is an artist at the highest level. Every phrase has intention and expression.

      Agreed 100% - she was an absolute miracle in those years: the most gorgeous instrument, trained to the highest level of technique, leavened with exquisite artistry, all put to the task of pure expression at the service of Mozart. The character glows. I have also uploaded her “or sai chi l’onore” from 2000, which is incredibly fiery and intense. And also the sextet from don Giovanni.

    Truly, in my humble opinion as a mere listener, this is the only version of "Non mi dir" I've ever heard that equals Joan Sutherland's performance 30 years prior. Fleming's color, flexibility, fullness of tone are so remarkable, plus she throws in a couple of quick surprise cadenzas that heighten the dramatic tension of this aria. Simply astounding.

      I totally agree. She was utterly miraculous in those years. For Solti (conducting here) she was the major discovery of his last years and revivified this repertoire for him.

    Gutsy and delicate? Yes, I guess that is possible. The aria itself can be almost annoyingly shrill at times. Luckily she smooths it out, and avoids any chance of a shrill moment.

    Azóta láttam a MÜPÁBAN a Budafoki Dohnányiék előadásában a Don Giovannit...és Ők is csodásan elő tudták adni az operát - S ezt a gyönyörű áriát is...pedig azt hittem "ezt a magyarok nem tudják előadni..." Hát...TUDTÁK! Szuper volt.
