I Tried Anti-Skid Fixed Gear Tires!

  • When riding fixed gear on snow and ice, you slide forever when pulling a skid. While that sounds like a ton of fun on paper, sometimes you actually need to stop. Weighing in at a heavyweight 800 grams PER TIRE (that's heavier than some wheels) with literal bits of metal poking out of them, the Schwalbe Winter tires are definitely anti-skid fixed gear tires, but that's the point!

    Winter riding is amazing on a fixed gear. This winter has been mild overall. Every time we've had heavy snow and a deep freeze, it warms up a week later. In years past it seemed like we've gone whole months without the temperature going above freezing. The Midwest is unpredictable.

    Welcome to the Midwest! I am loving watching your journey with discovering “real winter” and riding in snow for the first time. Although the main thing I have been getting from these videos has been, “Zach is in Michigan, therefore he must ride through the middle of the forest to get wherever he wants to go.” Great video!

    So far, Michigan has had a very, very mild winter, this weather ain't normal. Glad to know there are at least two fixed gear bikes in Michigan now.

      Well he did say it was warm enough for snow to start melting so the ice will start melting too and for someone who never experienced proper winter I wouldn't put him on a frozen lake if he doesn't know how to see if the ice will hold. Coming from a Wisconsinite

    While you are in Michigan, you should really check out the indoor #LexusVelodrome in Detroit. Go there on a Saturday they have evening races scheduled, take a track 101 class in the afternoon,(all the instructors are good) stay for the racing. They serve adult drinks, pizza and hot dogs during the races for spectators. Not your usual type of riding, but another aspect of fixed gear riding in all its glory

    The Schwalbe CX Pro’s are an insane tire if you don’t want the studs but want a proper tread. Far better if you’re not on ice imo. Snow/slush, prefer the CX Pro for cost, weight, power etc
    Great video! Welcome to winter ❄️👊🏻

    If the seal of your tubeless tire breaks when you're riding, you just put a spare tube inside, just like with non-tubeless. Have fun with the huge mess the liquid will make

  • @alienrefugee51

    You should've just picked up a beater pair of rims to run with the snow tires for when it's really bad out and then you still have your normal set for when it's dry.

    • @liamkaloy
      @liamkaloy Рік тому +3

      yup 2 set of wheels is way better than tire change, what is even better and what 99% of committed bikers end up with is at least 2 bikes - relatively cheaper beater/commuter bike and main/weekend bike. Wasting 500$ sram xx1 cassette on everyday winter work commuting is not the smartest choice.

      @@liamkaloy With the way he's moving around, I doubt he'd want to deal with transporting 2 bikes to different countries/States. But yeah, ideally if you live in the same spot, having a nicer ride and a beater is the way to go.

  • @volition5559
    @volition5559 Рік тому +3

    if you seat the bead of the tire onto the rim and then put the sealant in you don't have to deal with the mess. (seat with compressor or pump, remove valve core- tire should stay on since it's seated- and then put the sealant in and reinflate.) You should also just get tubeless specific rims. Makes your life easier.
    this also answers the question of what happens if my tire deflates while I'm away from a compressor. If you're seating your tire with sealant in the tire, you're relying on the sealant. You should seat the bead onto the rim with no sealant in the tire to ensure a seal has been made without sealant. Sealant is a backup for flats. Not the sealer.

    It’s been a weird winter around here this year, cleveland usually gets a gnarly amount of “lake effect” snow, but this year the snow has not stuck on the ground for more than a few days. So I actually got the same schwalbe tires in 26” (my 90s mtb is my winter commuter) and honestly have barely needed them!

    Nice vid. Ty but I can't do that tubeless thing. Have used 700c Soumi W240, Innova 26" steel and now 45NRTH Gravdal 650b. Lowering air pressure allows studs and tread blocks to compress out of the way a bit for longer stud life and smoother, quieter riding. I still swap for non-studded tires when I can. Enjoy your adventures amigo!

    @emilius1238 Рік тому

    I've gotten an air compressor since, but I've inflated my tubeless tires at regular gas station air compressors surely a dozen times. Only downside is you either need to run Schrader valves or you need an Schrader to Presta adapter, altough those are literally like 6€, so yeah.

    Bikeing in winter is OK or even fun for first few weeks. If you commute on daily basis it quickly becomes PITA. Up to -5 Celcius is acceptable but below this point it becomes painful. Also first and last month of winter is a lot of rain, ice on the roads, salt on the roads - meaning minimum 20 minutes cleaning every day if you don't want rust on drivetrain the next day. I am used to this and have no choice but is so much better if it is dry and warm, and you can just hoop on the bike without 3 layers of clothing and then just leave the bike without cleaning/oiling for the next day.

    One question Zach and I'm no expert but, Won't the liquid sealant freeze and not be able to do its work sealing a puncture? I mean to seal it has to be "liquid" to fill in the puncture, If it's frozen it would make the "tubeless" wheels useless...

    I hope you broke in your new tyres properly. Studded tyres require about 50-70 km riding on pavement before taking them to ice or other types of surfaces, otherwise there may be a risk of studs falling out. Good luck ^_^

    The Thunder is the only model the allows for a bigger tire but even that is too small for my 280lbs. When you have to pump tires up to higher pressures.....things can go wrong much more easily. Besides it is a much more jarring ride....the reason you had to buy bamboo handle bars.......? I don't mind being reasonably dangerous but not reasonably ridiculous.

    Just like most of the recent bicycle innovations, tubeless tires just don't seem like they're a significant enough improvement over what they're meant to replace to justify the trouble and/or expense.

      It takes a pretty big puncture to leave u with a flat...but then u can plug, reinflate, and u're on ur way...or u can use tubeless tire inserts which give u a run flat system.

    • @rollinrat4850

      I've gotta ask, have you even tried tubeless yet? For off-road and rough terrain it's a game changer, traction and comfort wise. I haven't gotten a pinch or puncture flat in over 20 years. Stan's didn't even exist back then. It was DIY only, it's not rocket science either.
      Road tubeless however is not worth the hassle or the expense.
      If you want to ignore your tires and just ride until they're flat, tubeless isn't for you and that's fine.
      Its great for improved traction and performance though. I won't ride without tubeless tires.
