Why Is This the Most Copied Bike EVER?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- The Cannondale Track is one of THE most if not THE most sought after track bike. The problem is, they don't make them anymore, at least not the way they used to. So fixed gear companies copied the design to make the Cannondale Track design more accessible for people who want it, some of them with a level of craftsmanship that rivals or even surpasses the original! But why is the Cannondale Track the most copied bike of all time? What makes it so special? Is it worth $2500 for a 30 year old aluminum frameset?
Thanks to Tomo from Korea for sharing this beautiful fixed gear.

If I had the money to make a Replic of a bike it would be the cinelli laser for sure.
Amy Danger has a replica, and it looks really good!
Edit: okay he literally shows her bike in the video lol
Had to look up what it was, and boy, that's 1 weird looking bike for sure.
6:25 Just ask Wabi Cycles for your custom-designed bikes name "Gallardo" series. 😜
Those rear drops on the Dosnoventa are much nicer than the Cannndale track in my opinion and the undrilled rear bridge is also a step up. C Track bikes became popular during the hipster “takeover” when wealthy kids from the burbs began messengering in urban cities like NY, and Philly. Although Cannondale bikes in general were considered dependable, they were never the most sought after in the messenger world. Steel fixed bikes and specifically steel lugged track bikes were always perceived as what was best back during the early 2000’s when fixed gear riding began to explode. Just being able to find an actual track bike with rear horizontal drops became trendy and the frames that could be bought were usually vintage because that’s what was available and somewhat affordable. Camnondale and KHS were the only two aluminum frames that messengers might ride. The smooth welds and oversized tubing that Cannondale’s were known for made them appealing. However, KHS made an affordable bladed pursuit frame that was pretty cool as well.
I am partial to early 90s Cannondales....I have 3 geared 3.0 models....and I’ve owned a Specialized Langster in the past
The Cannondale track is from the prettiest era of Cannondale, period....I love how stiff my road frames are and the cantilevered rear drops that shorten the chainstays...
The track frame I made at United Bicycle Institute is a fillet-brazed CrMo copy of a Cannondale Track lol
I rode a 1983 Cannondale ST500 for years, Its one of the nicest bikes I have ever owned, I can totally get why The track is so wanted.
In the same boat -got my first car at 26, bicycles ftw !
It’s a commodity....And like any well built, low volume product, thing, item...add demand to the formula and the price is what someone is willing to pay....there are going to be far fewer track frames made by a company with a diverse product range like Cannondale....the Standard road frames are going to start going up in value....the Road Race and Criterium frames in particular
im so excited to build my first fixed gear bike!
I need all that stiffness for my 13mph average speed ride where most of the time is spent talking about the bike and less time actually riding it.
Thanks for the laughter. I needed that, probably for too long now.
Paying anything more $25 for used and abused 25 y.o. aluminium frame is just a waste of money. If it cracks it still would be reasonably nice wall hanger.
Always glad to see you producing new videos
The cannondale caad10 was my favorite track bike I ever owned. I regret not buying a 1990’s cannondale track years back. I remember seeing a few listings under 2k. Once seeing once for under 800!
The Rolf wheels on the Dos Novento ...are those a current set?...or used hoops used on the build?
I got an offer for swapping my like new SS/FG bike with nice paintwork and no scratches for vintage steel bike which is scratched, but worse it has 12 speeds.
I can't use all 8 speeds of my autumn bike and now they offer me 12 speeds!
Excellent video Zach. I have an idea for a series of video for you. 🍺
Ooo… nice! She’s a beauty! Never seen it before, bought a litespeed years ago and been sticking with them since. Not a plug just like those bikes.
I think the Trek Session is in the same ring when it came to most copied bike😂
In 1985, Brian Skinner made the MCR Descender rocker link bicycle. Kona made several renditions of it before trek even got started. Trek's first dual suspension bike was a single pivot 9000 back in 1992, 7 years after the first rocker pivot suspension bike.
So honestly man, the trek session is just another copy in itself.
some of the bikes that these kids have in South Korea is insane.
After years and years on bike surrounding experience with cannons I think I broke it down.
Those started getting famous cus its price and beauty. Handmade, the nice weld, but most importance was the reliability. The thick tube and colors made many want it.
For me its the rear area and most in the track hanger. It has extra millimeters that make ppl more uncomfortable which is good tho.
I have many cannons but I still keep riding my 2.8 because it's uncomfy, I hit hills and attack sprints like nothing. I would get a track but the price kills it. Thankfully I just got a modern wannabe, CAPO. But man I want a old one
What year is your capo
@@joegomes1352 2010 and the Major Taylor 2005
Zach, you have been such an inspiration to me that I have figured out my version of what you ride. I first tried the track wheeled single speed built from a 1970's Fuji 27" sport frame. I soon learned that my beefy body does not do well on skinny tires. Now I ride a 1986 Bianchi Ocelot 1 spd with standard Weinman wheels and 26x1.75 inch tires, platform pedals with toe clips and narrow bars. Gotta have v brakes for the Sedona hills. The tube protectors are a must to keep away the goat's head thorns.
Not exactly fixie but fixie inspired.
I've got one for sale. '94, 55.5cm, arctic blue, no dents or scratches. Frame + fork + CK headset. $2300
what do you think of the kory yorks though?
Yep I wanna know too, i like their frames and might end up getting one if ever.
I have the K2 R28. it's both the smoothest and stiffest bike I own.
That said I don't hesitate to take it out for longer rides even when riding around the city.
If I could make a copy if copy the quantum race Klein with track drops. That bike is so slept on.
Huge "Handcrafted in Italy" ruins everything. Huge letters on downtube crash it.
Bike is nice but it shouldn't look like a rolling billboard.
i bought my first fixed gear 3 years and I saw a cannondale in my size (58cm) for 300 bucks, probably could've got it for 250. i didn't know enough about bikes back then to just pull the trigger. used 58's of any bike aren't that easy to come by
Your shirt always look like a birdie to me
I'm ok with a solid copy. stiff and rigid is the way to go. What I'm not ok with is 3k for a 30 yr old alu bike aluminum has a shelf life.
let me know when you have a shirt with the Gallardo campy parody logo, maybe 'reasonably dangerous' on the back?
How does one get one of those sick purple chainrings?
You can buy brand new 1992 Cannondale Tracks from China for $129 all day!
I'm actually tempted just to see how awful they are.
How do you prevent bike theft?
Hey Zach! Aventon stopped making single speeds. 🤬! ....... Just an FYI.
Hello! may i ask if it's ok to use integrated china dropbar on a fixed gear bike?
you’ve gotten too good at this zach.
10/10 would ride. Gorgeous. Need that adapter.
Italian wheel sets are great 👍
That is a good frame, I don't really like the current Dosnoventa frames.
What car did you get? Congrats. Bike okay after that fall?
I don't like the older Cannondale bikes. They are VERY prone to cracking. My local Co-Op throws away almost everyone they get due to a crack. If you have one you're constantly paranoid about your bike breaking. Also the frame is so stiff. I had one that was a road bike that I turned into a fixed gear and every bump I could feel. It also ended up cracking.
It's okay to make your comparison but nothing compares to the Cannodale's design, the Cannodale is actually cleaner in terms of design, I still prefer the Cannodale
Each handlebar has its own stem and it’s a one bolt swap though
7:42 Because you don't have a kickstand silly goose.
I love my 93 Cannondale track. Rides like a dream 🚴
I ride a 2008 Cannondale track and people offer to buy it all the time
That was a fun video. Thanks😆😂😂
Zach, your videos are incredibly entertaining to me, and I wouldn't be caught dead on a fixie (zero coordination skills).
"most copied bike ever"
Giant TCR: 👀
Zach, great video as usual, love your content! BUT! Being a snob, "Miche" is pronounced more like [mickeh]...
Ti > steel > aluminum in my book.
Love carbon but it’s not practical for my uses 😆
Ti was OK back in the day for marginal lightness, these days it has lost need for it and has become an object of desire. And dammit it if it's welded badly and cracks in a few years without any abuse, so many wannabe Ti frame builders today are on market.
@@event4216 As someone who has 7-12 hour days on the bike I have to respectfully disagree with you. I live somewhere with rough pavement and it smooths out the ride for me.
@@shreddersaurusrex323 I'm not a bike engineer but to my knowledge tires around 40mm make harshest alu frame bike riding like on pillows. Any tire can be inflated slightly less and if rider's weight and roads aren't too horrible tire size doesn't have to be even 40mm or 1.5"
But I don't mind if someone spends his money on more expensive frame, it's your money and your choice.
bruh i have rose tinted glasses😭
As a mountain biker, I'm disturbed. Like, just in general.
Meh….for that price point I’d rather buy a Cinelli Or Bianchi Pista.
I bought a 3.0 SR800 back in 89. Had Shimano 600 group set and a decent set of Wobler Wheel. Paid around $800 for it. Its major flaw was the derailed hanger wasn’t replaceable. I replaced the original toe strap pedals a set of Look clipless. I put on a pair of bolt on aero bars. It weighed 21# which wasn’t bad for the day. I used it mainly for crits and time trialing. At that time I also had a Columbus SL frame with a 105 group set. Both had indexed down tube shifters. The SL tube bike was the one I rode most of the time and it weighed 23#.
Five years later technology had passed them both by so I gave the steel bike to my cousin, kept the 3.0 and bought a Schwinn Paramount with ultegra STI. I relegated the 3.0 to bad weather rides.
I then got my USCF License and started racing and topped out at Cat 3. I never won a race at Cat 5 or 4 but was promoted twice as I regularly finished in the top five. Quite a few of those were because I was the lead out man for our clubs best sprinter. Then I was promoted to Cat 3 and could hang but was your basic cat fodder. Then on one windy wet cold day I used my 3.0 on a 50 mile Cat 3 race. The race was outside of Little Rock and I’m from Ohio and wasn’t pretty used to riding in that kind of crappy weather so that was probably my big advantage. I caught a break away early and rode off the front never to see the main pack again. One by one I rode my break away partners off my wheel and ended up wining by about 5 minutes.
That was my only win as a USCF racer so I will always have a fond spot in my heart for that Cannondale 3.0.
Yeah, unless one knows how to use a drill.
Looks like an allez to me, but with one gear
Keep talking zach. If you bring the price down enough, I can buy a Cannondale track
I understand you sponsored and all but everytime I decide to purchase a wabi bike they out of stock in my size
Zach, you've said you love fixies for the humble simplicity and fun. There's just less to go wrong. Well... Have you ever thought about getting a KickBike? Even simpler. I hear really good things. It's supposedly better exercise than bicycling. I double dare you to get one. KickBike US has them, made in Taiwan, for pretty reasonable prices.
I'm guessing you got a hatchback of some sort
Duck a name brand
I would much rather spend $2500 on a Colnago C50 pista.
Dosnoventa maybe cheaper but is not cheap
funny how this is so far from the minds of the people at cannondale. they love their history but this is outshone
btw, it's pronounced Mi-kae, not mi-che
Too many side track distractions.
Honestly, I don't like either of them!
I don't see the appeal!
I usually love Cannondale frames, but,not this one!
Dolan beats it,in every way, esthetically! 😊
Btw..
Straps are not a smart things to use, they can be dangerous!
Dolan is a beauty but the ugly part i see is that it belongs in the pista. I only wouldn't ride a cannon
Why is a strap pedal dangerous?
@@KVNSEYY because,if you have to stop suddenly,or any kind of, sudden situation, where you don't manage to pull your shoes quickly enough, you can fall and hurt yourself (it happened to me,it was one time, but I seriously hurt my hand and a leg, because my left leg stuck in the strap) ! The same can happen with the spd pedals! No straps and no spd! My leg needs to be removed from the pedals instantly! Wide bmx pedals are the best!
First!
