Nathalie Stutzmann and Philippe Jaroussky sing the famous Cornelia and Sesto duet "Son nata a lagrimar" from Handel's opera Giulio Cesare. Recorded for Nathalie Stutzmann's new album on Warner Classics & Erato "Heroes from the Shadows".
"Heroes from the Shadows" makes stars of the unfairly overlooked roles - from Arsamene to Zenobia - who sing Handel’s hidden operatic jewels: Cornelia from Giulio Cesare (‘Son nata’ in duet with star countertenor Philippe Jaroussky as her guest), Dardano’s stately ‘Pena tiranna’ from Amadigi di Gaula, and the sublime, intimate ‘Senti, bell’idol mio’ sung by Claudio in Silla. Stutzmann conducts her superb musicians playing on Baroque instruments, while singing some of Handel’s most virtuosic arias, all with a rare mastery of both arts - neither one in the shadow of the other.

I have listened to this stunning performance dozens of times now. Stutzmann and Jaroussky together take one's breath away. What a superb blending of voice and instruments. Special thanks to the sound technician and videographer who with the musicians make this performance so intensely intimate. I have rarely experienced anything like it.
Captivating, even for me, enough to kuckle down, listen and be. I have subscribed too.

Well put. Yes it is exquisite. This is one of my favourite duets, so sad. If you don't know it , may I recommend To Thee Thou Glorious Son of Worth from Theodora. Unfortunately what I regard as the best recording with Maureen Forrester and Heather Harper has been deleted from UA-cam.

Not at all androgynous: some women have deep voices. It doesn't make them resemble men in any way, to my mind! Let's just celebrate her artistry, her musicality, and her beautiful, wonderful voice!

I would use the word angelic then because it has the spiritual connotaion that you want to give it and not androgynous which is derived from andros - man and genus - woman.

Those two are just wonderful - together and each for themselves! What a gift to hear them live. Heard Stutzmann just recently in Konzerthaus Berlin (2nd June) singing instead of ingrettably indisposed Jaroussky. So she conducted AND sang Pergolesis Stabat Mater together with the wonderful Anna Prohaska, both receiving well deserved standing ovations. What a great evening!
A perfect combination : Nathalie and Jaroussky. Bravo!!

I've been a lover of classical music since I was a teenager (though not necessarily baroque) but have only recently discovered classical music with vocalists. This, somewhat to my surprise, completely blew me away. I have never heard such a sincere expression of the soul through the human voice before.

This is first time that I felt the human voice is an instrument. Blended with everything so beautifully without feeling any edge in melody. It is like miracle to me.

Une Chef d'Orchestre, qui est une Alto, chante Handel, avec Jaroussky, qui est haute contre. Une femme, un homme, qui s'échangent.
C'est sublime. C'est comme le sommet d'une belle montagne, c'est comme un arc en ciel au dessus de vertes collines, c'est comme un cygne blanc qui se reflete dans la lumière d'un lac.
Oui, et bien, ... je suis d'accord. Je n'arrive pas a décrire, parce que c'est indescriptible de pureté, de beauté, et de perfection.
Moi aussi je chante, en remuant mes mains et en fermant mes yeux.
Parce qu'il faut se glisser dedans. Et surtout ne pas penser.

My only regret is that the entire duet isn't on here, it is perhaps my most favourite of all duets. Moved to tears by this rendition. So beautiful to see the rapport between the singers and the way the music is truly lived. This could have been recorded in heaven...
