wow...cool list...no 1999...interesting...ive been a prince fan since I heard that album at 8...till this day it's my favorite...I love the albums you put on your list, but I found it interesting you didn't put 1999 on. I find it was his most groundbreaking album
Nice list. I was surprised (and disappointed) by your placing of the Gold Album, but I love that you've put Emancipation so highly. Such an underrated album.
So true about Emancipation. There is so much high quality stylistic variety on that album where Prince is experimenting and the songs are really great (and I say this even though about half of the first disc often sounds the same, but gems like Courtin’ Time, Damned If I Do and In This Bed I Scream make it absolutely worth the ride, and even more standard 90s R&B songs like Somebody’s Somebody are really good).
It's forgettable. Prince is one of the greats, but can we stop being over-the-top fangirls pretending that every song he ever made is some kind of all-time masterpiece? The Gold Experience is a bit overrated in general. I like "Endorphinmachine," "Shhh," and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World." I love "Billy Jack B*tch" and "Gold." But the rest of that album doesn't do much for me.

Really nice choices. Surprised by Grafitti Bridge being so high on many lists. Seems like fans and critics don't agree on that one. Joy in Repetition saves that album for me. I wonder why Around the World In A Day isn't mentioned more often by fans.
I'm a Prince fan, but I don't automatically feel obligated to love & defend all his albums like most superfans do -- some of his albums are just weak as a whole. However, I love the fact that there's so much music out there in so many different genres, & I always respected Prince's artisitc risks
Strange but true fact sometimes it snows in April came out in 1986 here in Florence Alabama in 1986 we had one of the worst snow and ice storms ever and it occurred as you guessed it in the month of April which made this song and album even more profound
I was a teenager in the 80s so presumably witnessed Prince at his peak. I'd say For You and Prince (the album) are his coming of age, prime Prince starting at Dirty Mind and ending somewhere at the Black Album/Lovesexi period where Prince allegedly started to produce mediocre albums deliberately as part of a feud with his record company. On occasion he "returned to form" but he never went back to being in tune with the public at large and mostly kept either satisfying or even disappointing his loyal following. A bizarre aspect of his artistry is that his performances on stage remained extraordinary much longer than his record output did. I came to this list after having acquired 2010 2nd hand and was not too disappointed listening to it. It's bland at times but it does have hooks and arrangements that pleasantly surprised me. The same goes for Plectrumelectrum, which isn't featured here due to being a "collaboration" but I think it's 100% a Prince album. It has the same interesting mix of run of the mill songs and occasional gems. I keep wondering what was really going on in his head. Having been the most accomplished artist of the 80s, how he kept going for so long in twilight mode, is a true mystery.
To each their own but you had a lot of really great albums on the backend...Gold Experience, Crystal Ball, Chaos and Disorder, even LotusFlow3r...those could all be bumped way up into the top half of his work lol. Both Hit N Run Albums, Art Offical Age, Come, Rave, those could all take the place of the aforementioned albums...Prince is a ROCKSTAR, let those guitar driven albums loose baby!!!
My top ten albums are 1. The Gold Experience 2. Emancipation 3. New Power Soul 4. Sign o the Times, 5. The Love Symbol Album 6. Batman album 7. Diamonds and Pearls 8. Come 9. Purple Rain 10. Musicology...but i must give a special mention to both Controversy and 3121.
Top 10 ( personal) 10. Dirty Mind 9. Love Sexy 8. Batman 7. Love Symbol Album 6. Diamonds & Pearl's 5. Signs O' The Times 4. Parade 3. Purple Rain 2. Around The World in a Day 1. 1999
Prince kinda seemed to have a problem walking the line between commercialism (short song lengths, potential hit singles, marketing) & his artistic/experimental desires & inclinations -- led to a lot of variety in his catalog, but not much accessibility for a new or casual fan
I don't think I could ever determine an exact ranking order. My favorites are everything from the first decade, For You all the way to Lovesexy, including The Black Album . I'm more selective about his post-80's output. I would like some songs but not others. My favorites here are The Rainbow Children, Lotusflow3r and The Truth. I also admire N.E.W.S. , but you'd probably have to be a musician and a Jazz and World music enthusiast in order to appreciate it. My least favorite Prince album ever is HITnRUN Phase One. It's bland and uninspired. The only redeeming moment for me is June. I'm also lukewarm on 20ten, 3121 and Musicology. They were more about pleasing the marketplace, which is something that always puts me off about any recordings. I greatly prefer when artists err on the side of creativity.
we are the same type of fan of prince..his first decade and a half I love it all...after that I am more selective...1999 is still my favorite...I heard it at 8 when it first came out and naturally loved it...looking back I find it was his best mixture of early raw prince and megastar prince...its punk, funk, new wave /new romantic, rock, soul, gospel etc ...delirious, let's pretend we're married, and automatic are my favorites off of it...the album versions are so great
For You (& the Prince album) was bascially WB's attempt to market Prince as the next Stevie Wonder & pigeonhole him as an R&B performer -- & that's totally understandable from the label's POV at the time -- so overall it's somewhat unremarkable in the whole scheme of his work & in contrast to what was coming 2 albums later....
Now that's a different list but I like it. Gold Experience stays n rotation as well as For You. I recently order Rainbow Children.i been listening 2 Dirty Mind non stop this week
What song on "Planet Earth" is named Chelsea Furgeson? I think you mean "Chelsea Rodgers". Good funky song. Sung with Shelby J. And inspired by the clothing designer Chelsea Rodgers (CR)
I know, but I was lmao that I had to reply to it. Good list though. It would be hard for me to rank them since there are so many styles. If you get a chance check out "The Black Album", "The Chocolate Invasion, and "The Slaughter House"
Haha I don’t blame you! I make some silly mistakes with what I say watching this back 🤪😂thank you! Yeah I really need to, so many albums and so much talent, my list would probably change again making this list now!
Dude much respect you for ranking Prince as a new fan however you incorrectly called a song Chelsea Ferguson and in actuality the name of the song is Chelsea Rodgers
I take it you didn’t really listen to the 3121 album, or else you would have said “thirty one, twenty one” instead of saying the album was “three one two one” lol
Alright dude we can only give you so many free passes ...you once again called something wrong and I got to correct you.. funknroll was the name of a song off of the album art official age
Good to see you rank Rainbow children so low, it is overrated tosh, yet most Prince fans (Who are straight and Male) seem to think its really good and its not, even with the repellent and hateful lyrics the music and performances are mediocre at best. Good to see that like me, you don't think everything he did was perfect - he was a genius, but he made and issued a lot of rubbish as well.

I love disc 2 of Emancipation
So true about Emancipation. There is so much high quality stylistic variety on that album where Prince is experimenting and the songs are really great (and I say this even though about half of the first disc often sounds the same, but gems like Courtin’ Time, Damned If I Do and In This Bed I Scream make it absolutely worth the ride, and even more standard 90s R&B songs like Somebody’s Somebody are really good).
Yeah, like how could you put The Gold Experience in such a low place? It is one of Prince's five best albums.
P. Control is one of the greatest prince songs of all time in my opinion
@Tony cool…
How??? It's the most headache inducing of his discography
Lol it’s a fun song

Robert Christgau gave SOTT an “A+” which is of course a perfect score, and I fully agree. It is Prince’s magnum opus. :)

Prince kinda seemed to have a problem walking the line between commercialism (short song lengths, potential hit singles, marketing) & his artistic/experimental desires & inclinations -- led to a lot of variety in his catalog, but not much accessibility for a new or casual fan
I love Batdance
I greatly prefer when artists err on the side of creativity.
we are the same type of fan of prince..his first decade and a half I love it all...after that I am more selective...1999 is still my favorite...I heard it at 8 when it first came out and naturally loved it...looking back I find it was his best mixture of early raw prince and megastar prince...its punk, funk, new wave /new romantic, rock, soul, gospel etc ...delirious, let's pretend we're married, and automatic are my favorites off of it...the album versions are so great
the gold experience is a top 5 album not 20
Agreed, I mean Shh, Gold, The Most Beautiful Girl In The World, Endorphinmachine, P control, they're amazing.
Right. Eye Hate U
Funkinroll - Da fuk? It is called Art Official Age and the song is called Funknroll.
Man you make me drool
For You (& the Prince album) was bascially WB's attempt to market Prince as the next Stevie Wonder & pigeonhole him as an R&B performer -- & that's totally understandable from the label's POV at the time -- so overall it's somewhat unremarkable in the whole scheme of his work & in contrast to what was coming 2 albums later....
Earth Wind & Fire also
I freaking love For You
Sign o times, 1999,Purple Rain,Controversy
20Ten is ranked higher than most of the 2000s albums. Seemed like leftovers but still better than the average
Here's my top 5
Gold Experience
For You
Rainbow Children
Prince
Around The World In A Day
Now that's a different list but I like it.
Lmao you know what I meant 🤪
I am aware lol
Can you do a review on prince vs Elton John
Parade is high up for me in his top 5
Good list but I feel you slept on Controversy, that album is pure gold
It is!
I hate you has an extended version it is great. Suggest you listen to it.
Have u ever listened to the black album
Batman1989 soundtrack?????????
I take it you didn’t really listen to the 3121 album, or else you would have said “thirty one, twenty one” instead of saying the album was “three one two one” lol
Batman soundtrack was his best album.
I never really dug The Batman album, but 2 each it's on
around the world dirty work parade
🥰
Alright dude we can only give you so many free passes ...you once again called something wrong and I got to correct you.. funknroll was the name of a song off of the album art official age
Art Official was a good album
Do Bob Dylan next, and don’t you dare skip the Christian records.
Every album after the gold experience is a bit trash
I wouldn’t say “trash”, but he definitely fell off after gold experience. You can only produce so much content before you gas out.
So random
Unfortunately, Grafitti Bridge will forever be anchored to & weighed down by the horrible dreadful movie it's asscoaited with
