- This video is for fans of one of the -- if not THE -- greatest musical genius of this lifetime. Prince is my favorite musician/singer/performer, and, in this vid, I share what I believe to be some of his greatest albums. The list changes from time to time, but at this moment, this is it!
I was in the music video “somebody somebody“ as well. They shot some scenes in a lounge in Soho also.
I love that you have The Rainbow Children as part of your top 10. What an underappreciated concept/jazz-fusion album it is.
It certainly is! Not many people talk about it, but seeing him on the One Nite Alone tour back in 2002, made me appreciate that album even more!

I knew Prince before from his hits but I became a fan with this album. I was in my early 20's. That was something else.
Somebody's Somebody is one of my top 10 songs. It's so beautiful. It's great you were in the video!
I got Purple Rain and Lovesexy vinyls by Prince. But recently I had, thank god, the curiosity of searching for Prince's last album and discovered the Hit n Run Phase Two. Damn, what a beautiful one. Especially the Revelation, Look at me, look at u and Groovy Potential tracks. Obviously I will discover much more of his work on the process, but I don't find people referring to the HnR Phase Two. Thank you! Yes, Hit n Run 2 is just AMAZING! Isn't it crazy that his last release is one of his best? I really wish his Estate would release more of the Vault tracks, instead of giving us the same stuff that we already own. We'll just have to wait and see!
Don’t have a problem with your Top Ten. Not at all! In fact, your #1 is my #1. I only disagree with you dismissing a fan of When Doves Cry. That song was a game changer. From first listen you knew you hadn’t heard anything like it. Thx for sharing your list bro💜👊🏿

it's so beautiful how i recently got into prince and my favorite album so far is rave un2 the joy fantastic and i was expecting it to be on here but the fact that rave and purple rain and controversy aren't even on here and the self titled is ranked at number 10 truly shows how great prince's music is, that such beautiful albums aren't even on this list because prince has so much gems of music! i am ready to listen to these albums after watching this video, thank you

He is the definition of a true artist. Along with his outstanding guitar playing and performances. The very first track on Prince’s very first album entitled “For You”,, Prince tells you/all of us,, exactly what his life mission & contribution is going to be. Can you imagine what type of foresight & personal & artistic maturity,, that young man must have had. To predict his future so accurately? Prince was truly one of a kind. It is wonderful to hear & see Prince’s evolution 💜 My entire list is subject to change,, depending on my mood 🤣🤣🤣 But for today,, that’s it💜💜💜💜💜 to the host of the video,, I was in the ‘somebody somebody’ video as well.
I said the same thing about Dirtymind. It blew my mind and changed me into a Prince fan 4ever.
I don't have any beef with this list. My favorites are all included in this list. I wore my tapes out back in the day too. L.A. Reid said they (The Deele) became musicians largely because of the Dirty Mind album. Changed their life. Many musicians have said 1999 made them become musicians. Duff McKagan says 1999 saved his life from the downward spiral he was in at the time. These works are soooo powerful. I can't begin to tell you what these albums did for me as a young person. Before cell phones, internet, social media, Netflix ect. this was what we had. So grateful!

Wow, you mentioned Tina Turner, then refer to your shirt and now she's passed on to glory since then. She hadn't when you posted your video. Have to check you out in the Somebody Somebody video. Nice vinyl collection. You have great music taste.
'll go into some specifics here, not necessarily albums or any order. The first thing that got me in was the keyboard hook on "when doves cry". "Around the world in a day" album captivated me with it's 180 degree shift from PR.
SOTT mainly "if I was your girlfriend". Parade still remains interesting and stark and a mystery to me. Batman for his shift into doing a soundtrack album without collaborations. Lovesexy and it's sheer bizarreness yet a familiar pattern of albums being released yearly, that I had not noticed before and song choices for these albums.
The undertaker video with the song "the ride" and later the live version of "motherless child". 1999 was the 2nd album I bought after PR. "Lady cab driver" hypnotized me. I was blown later on with Bambi on his 2nd album. Took me a few years to comprehend what was going on there.
Shhh on the gold experience was amazing. The live PR video from 1985 was in high rotation and studied meticulously for years to come. The mtv awards when Prince played "sott and playing in the sunshine" in 1987 got me into playing and writing songs.
Probably the biggest motivating factor and influence for me of Prince was found on the back of most of his albums. Written, arranged, composed and performed by Prince.

David. I am a HUGE Prince fan. There has never been or will ever be again a musical artist like Prince. Born 167 years after what many believe to be the greatest musical genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, in 1958. I believe Prince is hands down the greatest musical artist that ever lived. I have to say you did an awesome video highlighting your favorite Prince albums. As hardcore Prince fans know, Prince made so many flame-throwing jams that it's hard to agree on his top 10 greatest albums. However, I do believe that Sign 'O the Times is the greatest. It contains what I believe to be the greatest ballad ever, Adore. Like so many Prince fans, I have a top 10 favorite list as well. With the exception of Lovesexy, my list is similar to yours. Controversy is definitely on my list.1999 is my number one and your point about Dirty Mind is right on the money. His Mount Rushmore of albums: Dirty Mind, the most important album he ever made. 1999, his most creative. Purple Rain, his most successful. Sign 'O the Times, his greatest. From one hardcore Prince fan to another, well done. I could tell we would have some interesting Prince conversations.

I’m gonna have to say either Around The World In A Day or Dirty Mind are my favorite albums from him. I think they represent him the best out of his albums
I love the Musicology album not only for the great title track, and a lovely Prince ballad Call Me, and an hilarious naughty " chancers" anthem - don't make me sleep on the couch. Then the more political Dear Mr Man. Also it was an album that got great traction because Prince did a distribution deal with Miles Davis of Arista which should have been the model for later album releases in collaboration with the record industry and thereby making Prince more eligible for grammys/radio airplay/ Soundscan chart recognition that the record industry denied him on other albums.
WOW, your favorite album is "Dirty Mind", you are great friend, I love your list. With Prince it is impossible for me to make a list of 10 favorites, but sure all of mine are from before 2000. I would definitely put "Exodus" by NPG, I swear I adore that album!!!

I understand the sentiment to a degree but to dismiss "The Beautiful Ones"? "Computer Blue"? (That breakdown in the middle is so amazing). I dont listen to it much, but what if it never became a juggernaut? Would you feel differently? There is not one bad song on that album. BTW My top 3 ate 1. LoveSexy 2. Love Sign 3.Emancipation
Don't get me wrong, I actually LOVE Purple Rain, but it seems the masses believe that to be his greatest album, and it most certainly is not. If it wasn't for the movie, the album may not have been that massive. But, the time period it came out in, when you had MJ with Thriller, Madonna's Like a Virgin, Springsteen with Born In The U.S.A., music was hot back then, along with music videos, and here comes Prince with this MASSIVE motion picture, which he ends up winning an Academy Award for! Basically he blew everyone away, and I was there to experience all of it. But I was also there when he came out in 1978, and NO ONE knew who he was, and I watched him grow into the superstar he became. Anyway, sorry for the rambling on, but -- YES -- I love Purple Rain, but don't think it's as great as everyone makes it out to be. He has done better work since, and to me, 1999 is a far superior album.
@davidwhartonsr805 That may be what you meant but that's not the way it came off. While I agree PR may not be his best project it is still one of the most influential projects of all time! I can still remember hearing the debut of When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy on MTV and me and my cousins loosing our minds. Purple Rain the song is probably still arguably the greatest Rock Anthem of all times. And let's not forget the uproar Darling Nicki was the reason for the Parental Advisory Sticker on music being created!!! Last but not least Computer Blue has always been one of my Top 5 Prince Tracks. And thankfully the expanded edition included the uncut version of the song that he performed snippets of during the Purple Tain Tour in 1984. (For the record I have been Prince Fam since 1978. Saw him open for Rick James in 1979 and I still have my shorts and photos from that tour as well as the Dirty Mind Tour! Purple Rain will always remain one of my favorite projects for sentimental reasons it was the project that showed the world what we who had been following him knew from the beginning....Baby He's A Star!!!! "

My favorite album from Prince was DIRTY MIND! Mainly, because Prince was simply raw and fresh. The sexually charged lyrics were very rebellious, at the time that he released it. Prince was punk and funky. The album is a tasty treat in oozing sexuality. I loved it! A classy album. My favorite. Just a thought! Peace.

I can agree on the top 3, but purple rain is a REALLY well made album. After 87 he had a bad period until the 2000s
You shouldn't really keep vinyl in the shrink wrap, I've had some warped records caused by the shrink wrap shrinking.

Props on including LoveSexy. The title track alone is worth the price of the album. Rainbow Children was dope but i could have done without some of the preaching. 1999 was brilliant.... all hits no filler. SOTT boxset was all that & a bag of chips. Dirty Mind is flawless. Black rock/funk/punk/r&b/pop all mixed into 1 pot of garage band gumbo. Great list. Curious where you would rank The Gold Experience & Symbol albums which i loved both immensely

I've yet to get most of his albums by themselves on copy. i just have Purple Rain on vinyl and 1999 on CD. But i have the hits 1 and 2 which is nice. But i'm planning on getting more. And i totally agree with this placement. But i do think Controversy and Welcome 2 America are at least in my top 5. Not sure though. Loved the video though! :)

I like your eclectic taste in Prince. But purple rain would be my number one. I didn’t too much get into him after diamonds and pearls. I just didn’t care for any of that stuff. This is going be a shocker. I don’t even care for sign o the times. Till this day, I still can’t believe people think this is a masterpiece. Oh well music is subjective.
I think PR defo should be in the top 10. Dirty Mind is great but number one! I dont think Prince wouldve agreed with that. Emancipation is mostly miss for me. Lotus Flower is also mostly miss. Rainbow Children is fire though. 1999 when it came out to a little boy from the UK it sounded like something from another world. ATWIAD is excellent as is SOTT of course. My personal fav due to the memories it brings back is Parade, and i agree the film is funny af. Shit did get weird when Prince died.
Also, the people who don't like The Rainbow Children are wrong ;-)
Dirty Mind is the Quintessential Prince Album
I’m a massive prince fan and I respect your opinions but to not have purple rain in the top ten is weird. As albums go purple rain is perfection. It’s like doing a top ten beach boys list without pet sounds or Beatles list without sergeant Pepper. What is your beef with purple rain? …I’m interested to know
Don't get me wrong -- I actually LOVE Purple Rain, even though by the video it seems I do not. But, to me, PR is NOT his greatest album as everyone seems to think. I believe 1999 to be a far superior album than PR. And some of his works in later years (The Gold Experience to name one) is also better. Purple Rain came at THE right time. Michael Jackson was hot with Thriller and the videos, so Prince decided to do one better and make a movie, which is classic! But what if there wasn't a movie, and say the album came out later in the 80's? I have seen Prince in concert over 50 times starting in 1980, and nothing pissed me off more than being at his concert and he would play tracks like She's Always in my Hair, or Anotherloverholeenyohead, and the audience would just sit on their asses, but once he said Dearly Beloved, they would lose their shit. Now I'm talking about American audiences. In Europe it was a whole different story. They KNOW Prince's music! All of it!!! And every song he would play, they were into it. Unlike the U.S. where the majority only came to hear Purple Rain, Purple Rain.
The top ten best Prince albums? That's easy. Sign O' The Times and everything before and then throw in the Back Album.

I don't hate Purple Rain. I actually love the album, but Prince has done such better work before and since. To me, 1999 is a far superior album than Purple Rain. Purple Rain comes across really great because every time we hear the songs, we see the movie in our heads, and I love that damn movie!

Don't get me wrong, I love the album and especially the movie, but it used to annoy the shit out of me when I went to his concerts (and I've seen him about 50 times!!), and he would be jammin' on something like She's Always In My Hair, for example, or Anotherloverholenyohead, and everybody would be sitting down, but the minute he said "Dearly Beloved...", they would hit the roof!! Piss me the fuck off! LOL! I even had this dude comment on my video by saying he can't take me seriously because I don't have PR in my top 10 list! He even gave me a thumbs down! Purple Rain junkie!!! LOL! Like I said, love the album/movie, but I've been a Prince fan since 1978, and that is definitely not his greatest album, as lots of people seem to think! And you also mentioned Come -- damn, that's a great album!! You should also check out the second Prince top 10 vid if you haven't already. Peace!

While I agree PR may not be his best project it is still one of the most influential projects of all time! I can still remember hearing the debut of When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy on MTV and me and my cousins loosing our minds. Purple Rain the song is probably still arguably the greatest Rock Anthem of all times. And let's not forget the uproar Darling Nicki was the reason for the Parental Advisory Sticker on music being created!!! Last but not least Computer Blue has always been one of my Top 5 Prince Tracks. And thankfully the expanded edition included the uncut version of the song that he performed snippets of during the Purple Tain Tour in 1984. (For the record I have been Prince Fam since 1978. Saw him open for Rick James in 1979 and I still have my shorts and photos from that tour as well as the Dirty Mind Tour! Purple Rain will always remain one of my favorite projects for sentimental reasons it was the project that showed the world what we who had been following him knew from the beginning....Baby He's A Star!!!! "
We all probably started out with PR. After 30 more albums, we might have outgrown PR and like the newer music more.
When he sings Purple Rain live, it is so special. You can tell how much that song meant to him. I’ve been a Prince lover since the beginning and he has too many songs to choose a favorite for me, but I will never turn my back on a live Purple Rain…it’s when I feel most connected to him. 💜

Interesting. I am 19 yrs old and just discovered him. I listened to his first 8 albums. I really like to see content like this with his fans. Few people my age now about him, i’m trying to put all of my friends on him. I have seen a lot of more hardcore prince fans love dirty mind and I can understand why.

It’s pretty basic and I probably have a bias towards Parade because it’s the last one I’ve listened to and I have it constantly in my ears right now. Also shout out to the last song on atwiad: temptation. That genre fusion ballad is incredible, i especially love the jazz elements. I have noticed prince likes to to a lot of ballads on the last track: I’m yours, It’s gonna be lonely, International Lover, Purple Rain, Temptation, Sometimes It Snows in April

His 2nd, is first and 1999 are my favorite albums of his. I saw him at the Capitol center in Landover Maryland, it was the tour after purple rain. And I remember was not sold out, and some guy behind me said because Prince is for the freaks and Michael Jackson is for the masses..LoL ☔ ☔
I have that 'Emancipation' box set and the 'Sign o' The Times' Super deluxe box set, which is a crazy 13 record set.
Great list. i agreed with you with the PR thing. I understand is his most iconic one, and to me is one of his best concept albums (you know, the movie helped the concept a lot, but overall is about your relationship with God, the Devil, your friends and yourself). But, Prince put a lot of great albums in every decade, not just the 80s. I have like 2 years listening to Prince, and i love Come, Planet Earth and Exodus. Overall, i love all of the albums of your list, except the Rainbow Children and Parade, i dont get those albums so far, i have heard it a couple of times and so far i dont like it.

You shouldn't hate on Purple Rain so much! You have to know that casuals were introduced to Prince through Purple Rain and for some that's all that they know! Everyone has their top ten I guess? I don't like ranking things I just like to enjoy them for what they are and how they make me feel. If I did Purple Rain would make that list simply because of what it did for Prince...Prince as we remember him today would not be that Prince without Purple Rain and lastly to hate on When Doves Cry is unacceptable for a Prince fan...That song stands on its own for its uniqueness!
Don't get me wrong, I love PR the album/movie, but contrary to what millions of people believe, it is NOT his greatest work! European audiences know what time it is! I've seen Prince close to 50 times in concert, and you can't tell me when he jams on something like Anotherloverholenyohead, or She's Always in My Hair, and people just sit in their seats, not moving, but the minute he says "Dearly Beloved..." they go nuts!! Drives a true hardcore Prince fan insane! Like I said, funksters in Europe know what it's all about. That's why he toured there more than he did in his own country. Like he said in his song, Jukebox With a Heartbeat: "Do the people even know what they want, if they never hear what they need?" Truth to that!

I stopped worrying or thinking about the Purple Rain people! Or the people who just don't realize or appreciate what they're watching or listening to. If someone asks me enlighten them I'm more then happy to! On another note I was thinking about your top ten list and I thought doing a Prince top ten list is next to impossible! People are attached to what opened their eyes! When you were there from the beginning you can appreciate the journey all the way to the end...but there is no end because he left us so much! This how crazy making a Prince top ten list is...Here's a second top ten that's hard to beat...with none of your choices?

Great list dude! My all-time favorite PRINCE album is 1999! That's the album that made me a PRINCE fan. He's been, my favorite artist ever since that album was released in 1982. An incredibly funky, rocking, and eclectic album!
Prince was such a funky and ingenious muthafucka that it would take me about a month to figure out my top 10 list.
