  • Nyle Steiner, virtuoso and inventor of the EVI, day one with the NuEVI. Video of his first in-person impressions, testing and lots of playing. Nyle has given his full blessing to this great instrument's creation and has assisted as an official consultant.
    It was a special and legendary experience to recently deliver to Nyle his own NuEVI... which came all the way from the brilliant programmer/designer/musician, Johan Berglund in Sweden.
    We talked, tested and explored, and playing the instrument was so engaging, we kept getting distracted and just enjoyed the music... so there is a lot to see and hear. The date was 5/23/2018.
    Thank you, Steve Anderson for starting the "Save the EVI" movement and to Johan Berglund for creating this amazing instrument... the NuEVI. Email TheNuEVI at gmail.com for updates and wait list.
    Mark Steiner's 1st NuEVI demo: • My 1st NuEVI Demo - Ma...
    ** Nyle is in good health... some were worried... the night of that video he just had a really bad cold, but still didn't want to cancel the video shoot etc. He is amazing.

    Love this video so much I watched it 3 times. What can I say about our fantastic leader Nyle Steiner, this man is such a beautiful gift to us. Watching him play is so inspiring and seeing him play the NuEVI is amazing. Thank you Mark for giving us this exclusive look into Nyle's environment. dB

      I hear you, Dino... many EWI players are requesting a Berglund Instruments EWI. I'd love to see that happen. Email Johan and let him know how you feel about it.... TheNuEVI at gmail.com Thank you!

    I am so happy to have finally found the man behind the electronic wind instrument sound in Jarre's soundtracks. My favorite example of Nyle Steiner's work is from the film Prancer. I noticed that the sound first used in this video is quite similar to the sound used throughout the Prancer soundtrack. Is this sound included on the NuEVI? I would LOVE to have that particular sound at my disposal. Thank you in advance for your reply, and I am so happy I've found this video!

      Be sure you are aware of the "EWI" instruments out there that are closer to flute fingering as you decide. That said, The canister of the EVI really gives a much more stable hold on the instrument, and thus no need for a neck strap. Even if someone is already pretty good at a flute or sax, I still recommend the EVI, but be sure you chose the way you want to go carefully. One of my best friends learned EVI who was not a trumpet player and he picked it up quite quickly. It's one of the easiest instruments to learn to play. It was designed that way. To be on the waiting list with no pay needed up front, email Johan at TheNuEVI@gmail.com. Thanks! :)

    I can see that the instrument is using fingerings in C, but is it possible to put this in B-flat? Or any other key for that matter?

    What are you using around the 3:45 mark? Like a sax and trumpet type setting?

    • @marksteiner3493
      @marksteiner3493  6 років тому

      Blake, it is voices from the new "Session Horns" that recently launched in Logic. Then that whole section has that with other more synthy logic instruments I customized for this.

      thanks I figured it was from a VST sounds very good.

      On these first 2 demos, I wanted to use easy to get/free/cheap plugins/sounds so that we could show what you can do with it as a new user. I was surprised how well the sounds turned out for that as I'm a bit of a real eco analog freak. My hat's off to Logic. That said... soon I'll be getting some demos out of it using analog/modular... possibly even playing the world's biggest Nyle Steiner Synthasystem modular (the one it the Nyle documentary). Gonna try to line that up.

      Yeah just gotta place the order for it. I sold my akai model last year because I didn't want it to get broken or anything. It was in museum quality shape too.

    My God, at 9:49, what is that sound??

    • @marksteiner3493
      @marksteiner3493  6 років тому

      That one is so haunting! It is on the end for that reason... great closer sound! So that is a very standard sample instrument of an analog Saw wave from the JV-1010 that Nyle customized for breath control. It's also the first sound you hear Nyle play when you first see him at the start of the video. It's getting that bigger, space-French horn? sound because I manually built an exact 2 tap stereo delay for it by copying and pasting the recording into 2 different tracks, panning them pretty far left and right, and then nudging them just a little bit back in the time line so they each started very slightly later. You can get some really great smudgy and even cancellation effects that way and doing it manually means full resolution delay (as apposed to hoping the delay plugin is the resolution you want). Enjoying your enthusiasm! This is great stuff for sure! Nyle is so amazing.

      Stay tuned for more demos from Nyle and myself that will use actual analog tones. For me, those are the soul of the EVI, and if you like that sound at 9:49, you'll really enjoy similar sounds from real voltage synthesis. Coming soon! My favorite stuff for EVI! Analog and modular.

    • @leroibrashears6583
      @leroibrashears6583 6 років тому

      Wow, just wow!! I have a JV 1010 I really am not using very much anymore. Would he customize one for me like that? I suppose I would just run it through my other two VL 70s.

    • @marksteiner3493
      @marksteiner3493  6 років тому

      You are sure set with the gear just for an EVI. Wow. Do you already play a wind synth. The VL's as so good! Patchman music has presets for the JV1010 ready for wind synth, and he also has a similar chip for the VL70m's. The Turbo chip.

    • @leroibrashears6583
      @leroibrashears6583 6 років тому

      Yes, I play a 4000S. I see no reason not to get the JV1010 update, long as all it is doing is adding breath control capacity to the sounds. But I will get all that straight with the Patchman.

    Great sound! Great instrument!
    Can you please tell me which rotator you use?
    and How Nyle stored chords /notes in this earlier video:

    Thanks

  • @leroibrashears6583

    How the $%@& do you play those chords!!?? Some of you guys are so tech savvy, for a non nerd, how does one do it?

    • @marksteiner3493
      @marksteiner3493  6 років тому

      So it is using a "Midi Rotator" similar to the software created by Robby Kilgore. What is cool about it is that you don't even need to understand it much... turn it on and it works... Robby calls it "open tuning for keyboard" and for wind synth here too. But you can also then go make adjustments to the note setting and explore other chord structures.

    • @marksteiner3493
      @marksteiner3493  6 років тому

      continued... but here is how it works... When you play a note... 3 midi notes are sent. One is just the note you play, and 2nd is a note that is a set amount of steps away from that note (say, a 5th, which is common to use). The 3rd note simultaneously sent is the magic part. For that 3rd note created, it will rotate between 4 different intervals that you can set (or use the nice default). So each time you again play a new note/chord... that 3rd note in the chord goes to the next, different interval. In my own demo I intentionally expose that to be more clear by playing the same initial note over and over so you can catch the rotation. But the listen doesn't usual notice the pattern when you change from note to note, so you get an incredible illusion of a vastly varying arrangement. See my demo here: ua-cam.com/video/AApx-0dBWZk/v-deo.html (In this the note I actually play is the one rotating through 4 different intervals... you can set it that way now or just have the note you play stay as is... which is more intuitive... and have one of the 2 generated notes rotate.) Hopefully this clears it up but who knows. Try it for free though... do a search for Robby Kilgore and rotator and he's make a free AU plugin and a free Logic script that does this. Robby is amazing and kindly shares his software for free or VERY inexpensively. Great man and musician.

      And the vibrato... after the breath control, the natural vibrato this instrument offers is the most important thing being offered in my opinion. On the bottom of the of the EVI is a vibrato pad/lever. You simply move it back and forth similarly to when playing violin. The breath and real time human vibrato Nyle brought with the EVI/EWI are so powerful in bringing human emotion into electronic instruments.
