I LOVE this deal it's exactly what I thought they would do. They were never going to pay for Burnes so this was the best possible option I just wish this was a 2-3 year deal
FINALLY, I've been asking for this for the longest. First thing in the past 5 years the Sox have done that I can applaud. This guy has high upside and at a good price.
I am all for adding another day between starts. Why be tethered to that baseball rule? Think outside the mlb box! It just would keep pitchers' fresher & allow pitchers throwing arms an additional day to recover.
Literally what I predicted we get Buehler and Chapman. I am actually excited about Buehler tho because like you said he’s gonna have a full offseason and a new environment. I think he’ll be solid for us. Hope he comes back next year if he’s successful
no one is close to the dodgers they in a league of their own, probably besides the Mets, Red Sox not trying to be the Dodgers, just trying to get back to the postseason and go from there.@@yualwayslyng3701
I guess we can only afford pitchers with past Tommy John surgeries - how sad not being able to spend with the rest of the top tiered teams. We need new owners who are willing to sign top FA's and want to field the best team possible.
I choose to be optimistic and grateful that Buehler has accomplished what this rotation needs and that he can do it again. Here’s to hoping each member of the rotation has a fully healthy year with each posting their best year!
Take care of big game buehler for us:( gonna miss him in LA. What’s crazy is he was rehabbing this whole time, and I honestly think he’ll have a ounce back year this year healthy. Can’t get mad, I do like Red Sox from all the east coast teams out there
The upside of Buehler is fantastic, for sure, but I think its the intangibles of this deal that get me the most excited. Its what someone like Buehler, a veteran with world champion pedigree, can do to help these young guys coming off their first full seasons and (hopefully) heading into their first post seasons. That clubhouse presence is super important.
I like free agent signings that come through in the postseason. As opposed to the Yankee free agent closer.. who got smacked around in the last postseason. Both Crochet & Buelher are starters that have experience entering games out of the bullpen.
This signing sort of feels like knowing my mother in law is coming for the Holiday but she’s not staying with us. It’s not bad but I just feel like it could be better. This signing still feels like John Henry not really wanting to spend money to improve the team. Paid nothing for Crochet. One year to Chapman and Buehler and two years for Sandoval who may only pitch one year. I mean what is going on……….we’re the Boston Red Sox and we’re behaving like a second tier team.
I thought the Sox might tease us the rest of the offseason after signing a below average Sandoval still healing from TJ surgery. After watching Walker put it back together in the World Series, I love the signing, and they left themselves some room for a big right handed bat.
This signing not only shores up the starting rotation but adds a little more beef to the middle releaf. Now all we need is a solid right hand bat to beat up on the green monster.
I think the Red Sox have made the correct moves this offseason and so far I’d call it a success. There are more things that still need to happen like trading Yoshida, signing a (righty) bat, and going after another bullpen arm, etc. But faith has been restored for the Red Sox and their ownership.
I'm in on this! The one year deal is super smart because of the success/suck factor. The get to know him, see if he's a fit and then get first dibs at offering him a much bigger contract. 100% for me.
This is a stellar signing. Walker's Tommy John surgery went extremely well. And he has been working hard with the leading sports medicine doctor in Los Angeles. He will win 14 games or more and have an ERA at 3.25 or less. Let's get a RH slugger among the 3-5 players in the daily rumors, a reliable closer, and voila, the Sox are contenders again!
I like their chances if they can get the last two pieces big righty bat and big righty reliever). Not sure about Bregman at 2B. Are we leaving both Campbell and Anthony in AAA for more seasoning/making sure? Was looking forward to seeing Campbell be another impact righty bat. Are we clearing out either Yoshida or Abreu? Still want to see three or four more moves.
They don't do multi year deals unless they're coming off TJ. If he pitches great, he is gone after one year. If he pitches poorly, he is gone either way. Don't like this deal.
Love 1 year deals for a player like this. Great rebound candidate and if he sucks he’s gone. There will always be another top free agent if need be for next year when they finish 84 and 78
Forgot to mention RIP to Ricky Henderson!! In my opinion the greatest lead off hitter in the history of baseball and for the 2002 season a Boston Red Sox. Ricky played 25 years……..that’s right 25 years in the MLB and then for fun when he retired he played for a semi pro team in San Diego. Ricky loved baseball and his bravado was never meant to be harmful to anyone. If you want to have a good laugh search Will Clark Ricky Henderson story. Ricky gone!! Enjoy!
All I can say is I’m extremely happy they finally put some action behind their word for once. They acknowledged the urgent need for a frontline starter and another starter to complement that and they did it. I agree it sucks it’s a 1 year deal but in a way I like it. If he’s what they expect they can try to extend him and even if he leaves or if he blows there’s a good amount of solid free agent starters next offseason to replace him. Finally the Sox have a good rotation and some depth to back that up with the assumption Kutter doesn’t make the rotation as well as Fitts, Criswell & Priester. Add another impact bullpen arm and this Sox pitching staff is definitely one of the strongest in the league.
The Red Sox and Craig Breslow are being very smart and definitely on the right track by gradually building up the depth of their starting rotation with today's acquisition of Walker Buehler ... With the number of pitching related injuries occurring these days, a MLB organization really needs seven or eight starting pitchers available to help get through the marathon 162 game season ... Corbin Burnes will require a significant overpay due to the overall length of the contract and dollars needed to acquire him ... Buehler is a reasonable, value minded alternative ... Let the Giants, Blue Jays or Mets overpay for Burnes as the Yankees just have for Max Fried ... It appears that Breslow will now start focusing more of his attention on building up more roster depth by picking up some additional relievers for the bullpen along with finding that right hand power outfield bat to fill the void with Tyler O'Neill (free agent Teoscar Hernandez ??? ... or through a trade ???) signing with the Orioles ...
Happy for the resolution. Happy they spent some money, if not really that much. I hope this works out well. Do you think buying time might be in their thoughts, to see what Fitts or Priester or the like become in 2025? Thanks Corbin for saving me a lot of clicking around to figure out whether I like this deal!
I wish we we’ve done a 2 or 3 year with options, but I bet he wants to do well then rehit the market. I love this though. He’s a great pair with Crotchet at the too
This gives the Sox a great rotation, if a little righty heavy - the one lefty is Crochet. It makes me wonder if the proposed Yoshida/Jordan Montgomery swap could be back on, since Montgomery is a lefty. Not sure about JM's numbers though.
Great signing. Crawford could be the “reliever piece” they were looking for or go with six man rotation. No one talks about Rafaela playing second. Allows you to keep Abreu in right with Refsnyder and Duran in center.
It’s a good signing. It’s clear to me that the goal is for Sandoval to take his spot for 2026. Crawford, Fitts, Preister, or some other prospect or acquisition should be able to take Giolito’s spot too, setting up the rotation (with plenty of depth) for the next two seasons.
I think this was a savvy signing. If he has a nice year you benefit but have the option to extend him or let him go with draft pick compensation. Breslow is picking up pitching, whether it adds depth or pays off. Buys time for prospects to develop. I may have been a little hard on Breslow. He’s been patient and diligent in this free agent period. Signing Buehler for one year might get a little more drive out of him. I like this deal alot. I think the Red Sox are getting close. And you have to believe that many of the young players and prospects will have a nice upward bounce.
Corbin… in situations like this I really don’t like anything more than a one year deal. If he has a 2 or 3 year contract with an opt out after one year and he doesn’t produce, you’re stuck for the remainder of the contract. If he’s great he’s gonna opt out after the year anyway. It’s different if it’s a many-year deal with an opt-out after 4 years or more for someone like Cole where the risk/reward is favorable.
The 2025 rotation is starting to shape up. I am glad the Red Sox are solidifying their starting pitching. I'd call it a decent offseason so far. Now go get another reliever and a RH bat.
I honestly dont think red sox are done either. I could see trade to bolster the bullpen. Guardians traded naylor and andres jimenez so maybe Clase could be on sox radar.
This move has so much potential. If it doesn’t work out in the end, it’s not a bad decision. I’m not for waiting to pounce on every move that didn’t work out so I can say what a bad job the team I love to follow is doing. That’s so weird to me.
Why is no one talking about a one year deal for Justin Turner? Everyone loves the guy, great RHH, chance for 1 of the big 3 to break through in near future
@@redseatradio I did and asked this question after watching the video. How is he an upgrade over Bello, Crawford, or Giolito? If the Dodgers couldn't fix him, what makes Boston think that they can? This also must mean that Breslow has very low confidence in Fitts, despite him putting up great numbers in his end of season call up.
I definitely like this sighing low risk possible high reward potential. One year is ok and you pointed out at least they did something. A handed power hitter and bullpen piece and then we have a decent off season ⚾
I'm torn with this one. I expected this to be the signing from the Sox. There should be no reason now that they don't sign a big time RH hitter, and someone like Scott. My feeling is, if they don't, I just don't see them being better than Baltimore or NY
If you asked me a month ago I would tell you I hate this FO and theyre doing nothing. Fast forward to now and I can’t be any happier, this rotation looks excellent, and personally I think Buheler has a higher ceiling than Burnes. We just need a righty bat and another couple relievers.
Great move!!! I think he will be more like he was in the playoffs. The can give him QO when its over. Then next year they have Sandvol. After that they will have some studs ready for the majors (at least I hope). Look at the moves they are making. They will break the bank for a generational talent but they are not breaking the bank for very good players. Cost is a consideration. I still think they can upgrade backup catcher. I do not see them over spending for a RH bat. Maybe a reliever. I remember hearing that they had a deal to bring Martin back then nothing. So maybe they will bring Martin back and wait for Spring training when they can put guys on IL. I think that opens at least 2 spots maybe 3. I am curious on what they are going to do to open up a roster spot. My guess is Gasper or trade another AAA reliever.
Houck is definitely the #2 after his all star breakout season. One year is tough for me… Kutter had a solid year and you’re going to be arresting his progress taking his spot away? For one year..then you have Giolito on the vesting option based on 140 innings ? There obviously some concern about Walker’s ability by him settling for a one year deal.. the Red Sox are improving this team no doubt just Odd way to go about it cause next year more than likely we going to be looking for pitching again
First off, between this and Sandoval, I think it’s obvious they’re still in low risk, high ceiling mode versus going after the big fish like Burnes. It very well may work out, especially since the regulars got much needed full season experience last year. 6.5 starters depth wise (Sandoval being the half since he won’t be there first half). The competition should be healthy in spring training and I have some hope. ….and hey, in Beuhler, we have a more clutch playoff performer historically for the bullpen than Chapman - so that’s a plus. 😉
I LOVE this deal it's exactly what I thought they would do. They were never going to pay for Burnes so this was the best possible option I just wish this was a 2-3 year deal
We are on the same page Versatility. With this and the Crochet debacle

He has a real history of being a guy who rises to the occasion. Just look at his playoff numbers in general
The Red Sox really paid $60 million for essentially a year of Giolito and Walker Buehler off the back of seasons with 5+ ERAs

For one year..then you have Giolito on the vesting option based on 140 innings ? There obviously some concern about Walker’s ability by him settling for a one year deal.. the Red Sox are improving this team no doubt just Odd way to go about it cause next year more than likely we going to be looking for pitching again
By then, Bello and Crochet should be the top starters (Not including Houck (whose solid) and Crawford.
Let's see if he's still the phenom who showed up in 2018 fall classic.
Yeah true maybe Buehler will make up for it lol
Yes yes yes!!!
Hmmm. Do you think we might be going 6 deep with starters? Given some guys returning from injury, maybe that would be ok.
