  • Opening and Closing Credits to Season 5 of "Mission: Impossible". Includes original Paramount Television "Split Box" based of my knowledge. Fair Use applies. I don't own anything shown here. They belong to CBS & Paramount Pictures.

From the episode "The Killer" (9/19/1970), the premiere episode of this particular season.
During this season the theme music would change to a higher-pitched version; these episodes (and these ones only) also had the 1970 Paramount TV logo music. When determining what episodes used them in order of broadcast, it's a real messy issue like with season 1 of _Star Trek (The Original Series)_ because in syndication the wrong version of the theme music may be used.

Are you talking about the first updated theme song used only for this season where it sounds early ‘70s-ish?
They also used another updated theme for the final season (1972-73) but it’s different than the 1970-71 updated theme.

@@ClassicTVMan1981X - That's nice - and very important - to know. The original first-season version wouldn't return until Season 6, when Lynda Day George was added to the cast, Greg Morris was upped to co-star after Peter Graves, and Peter Lupus had a heavier (non-physical) load in terms of his screen time.

As I've got older, I've come to notice that this music sounds like it was influenced by Latin music. You could dance the tango to it.

      @@marksmith6501 That explains a lot.
And subsequent to posting my comment, I've learned that it was indeed derivative or influenced by salsa music. Lalo was great. Many of his pieces are the soundtrack of my childhood.

Meanwhile, on the original night "The Killer" aired . . . over on another network, two former "Mission: Impossible" co-stars appeared on a variety show, apparently being repositioned as an up-and-coming singing duo:

***** Well, that pretty much rules out the dynamite pack I just got of the "complete television collection" since all the discs are labeled CBS DVD as well as Paramount.
But, at least season 2 has some episodes with the rising circle Paramount Television logo.
Would have been cool to have the rest of the episodes with the closet killer logos.

Not sure if the Region 2 (PAL) and Region 4 (SECAM) DVDs of seasons 3-7 have the classic logos intact! I mean, has anyone checked the DVD sets from those regions?

All of the series was released through CBS DVD. The original end logos are present on the first two seasons on DVD. The last five have plastering.
For some people, the plastering was a good thing, since on S4 and some of S5 it removes the Closet Killer (though imagine if the Closet Killer music had been intact on the CBS logos, which thankfully it wasn't).
