Mission: Impossible is an American television series that was created and initially produced by Bruce Geller. It chronicles the missions of a team of secret government agents known as the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). In the first season, the team is led by Dan Briggs, played by Steven Hill; Jim Phelps, played by Peter Graves, takes charge for the remaining seasons. A hallmark of the series shows Briggs or Phelps receiving his instructions on a recording that then self-destructs, followed by the theme music composed by Lalo Schifrin.
The series was filmed and financed by Desilu Productions, and aired on the CBS network from September 1966 to March 1973. The series was reprised in 1988 for two seasons on ABC, retaining only Graves in the cast. It also inspired a series of theatrical motion pictures starring Tom Cruise, beginning in 1996.
The series follows the exploits of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF), a small team of secret agents used for covert missions against dictators, evil organizations and (primarily in later episodes) crime lords. On occasion, the IMF also mounts unsanctioned, private missions on behalf of its members.
The identities of the higher echelons of the organization that oversees the IMF are never revealed. Only rare cryptic bits of information are ever provided during the life of the series, such as in the third season mission "Nicole", where the IMF leader states that his instructions come from "Division Seven". In the 1980s revival, it is suggested the IMF is an independent agency of the United States government.
Bongo drums, horns, flute, one of the greatest themes in television history.

This video shows, at least for me, the best lineup of actors during the show’s run. Our whole family watched Mission:Impossible when I was growing up. I played trumpet in our high school band, and we were thrilled upon coming to practice and finding the sheet music on our individual stands. We played the heck out of the Mission Impossible theme song! Great memories of those days.
I thought Martin Landau was the best on Mission Impossible. After he and Barbara Bain left the show declined.

The most iconic theme EVER!!! And in the year 2021.........IT STILL REIGNS KING! Side note: Lalo Schifrin uses a Igor Stravinsky idea when he had the bassoonist play in the high upper register in some of the episodes. CLASSIC!
I played the bassoon in Jr High! And was lucky enough to have private lessons from the bassoon player from the Detroit Symphony back in the mid to late 70's. Phillip Austin was an excellent teacher. 👍❤
The 1980s sequel and Tom Cruise movies versions are pretty good but this version of the theme will ALWAYS be the best! Just the way Lalo Schifrin killed it is unbeatable with that sixties spy flavor. One of the all time most memorable and greatest theme songs right with Hawaii Five-O, Perry Mason, I Spy and The Rockford Files.
Jonny Quest, Peter Gunn and The Avengers had killer themes, too 🎶🙂

That early version with those bongo drums, just amazing. I could listen to it over & over. I remember watching it in 66-69. I LOVED Barbara Bain too , and I was 9 yrs old!! Great idea for a show, great cast, and each opening showed a montage of the episode that was coming up. 👍🏼👍🏼
This particular episode was truly great as it guest starred Darren McGavin (remember the "old man" in "A Christmas Story"?) as the villain, an egocentric art collector. And the trained cat! The trained cat was great. "The Seal", episode 9 from Season 2, November 1967.
The cat 0:20 was the best actor in this episode. RIP the cat.

I still watch the reruns for Mission Impossible, loved the plots and Cinnamon was so sharp.
I had D-tv for years & every yr they would charge more for less programs ? ... So in '17' i gave them THE FOOT , One of the Best decision i made ! ... l started watching regular old 'antenna' tv & they began showing 'Mission Impossible' , lt's My FAVORITE Show On TV , I Don't Miss An Episode ! ... l love how Precise & Industrious they are ! ...

@@dogwalker666 You can still watch the ORIGINAL TV series on Sundays @ 3:00am on OTA channel 5.2 (MeTV) in the Boston area. A few cable companies carry MeTV also, but I just watch with a regular antenna for free.
I actually set my alarm clock to wake me @ 2:50am so I'm awake long enough to watch Mission Impossible. Most times I see the entire episode; once in awhile, I doze off, lol!

I remember watching the intro and then during the show, match8ng the intro scenes. That was part of the fun. Definitively not the Hollywood of today. RIP to the show and cast members no longer with us.

Something can't be duplicated, cloned, remade or copied and Mission Impossible actors and storylines fall into that category.
Same with Perry Mason, Magnum, PI, The Rockford Files,The Equalizer and Columbo.
@@kendallrivers1119 I actually like the new Magnum show with its twist. It's not trying to duplicate the original. Same goes for The Equalizer. I watch the original with Edward Woodward on streaming CBS and watch the new series with Queen Latifah on Sundays.
@@abbyandsadiesmom2040 Well, hey more power to ya but I have tried the Latifahizer and i just had to quit after two episodes because as hard as I tried I couldn't make it through lol. And with the Magnum reboot they should've named it something else because it's not Magnum without Tom Selleck or the other three guys it just doesn't work. But I'm glad to hear that the original Equalizer is on streaming. I wish they'd put Magnum on there too so more new viewers can discover the eighties classic.

I have been watching the dvds every weekend ovr the past year. Only a few to go. Wow, what a ride. There is an accompanying book that profiles te shows and all episodes. What fun.
This was on BBC2 in the UK.
Another of the good TV shows of last Century. I liked the mystery in each chapter, and the fact many of the objects self-destroyed when their purpose had been fulfilled. The music is Great and could not have been better chosen or performed.
I grew up watching 👀 this TV 📺 show during the 60's and the theme music 🎶 🎵 is excellent and I'm still listening to this music 🎶 🎵 on the 23rd of February 2024 and this 🎶 music 🎶 🎵 will still be played for many centuries into the future 🎵 🎶 and I'm a very proud Baby Boomer

My favorite scene is when Jim gets his assignments, and the tape recorders would melt by self-destruction after 60 seconds.
Perfect music for that show...at the end they played it then freeze framed them riding or walking off mission successful.. just bad azz.

Mission Impossible TV series is still my top favorite TV show of all time. I still watch the old classic Mission Impossible TV series. Several of my favorite episodes are The Bunker (Part 1 and 2), The Falcon (Part 1, 2, and 3), The Town, The Controllers (Part 1 and 2), Operation Rogosh, The Mercenaries, Encore, The Killer, The Cardinal, The Glass Cage, The Train, Submarine, The Photographer, Old Man Out (Part 1 and 2), Robot, The Crane, and many more. Great plots with innovation, manipulation, trickery, deception and betrayal. Excellent teamwork and well-cooperative crew cast with no emotional attachment. The superb music theme, and extraordinary innovative ideas. Mission Impossible TV series is one of the top legendary TV shows of all Hollywood media history.

The only show that Lucille Ball didn't understand being head of Desilu. Her second husband Gary Morton told her to sit down and watch it in for the hour. What she didn't realize that later on, Mission Impossible, Star Trek, and The Untouchables would become multi million dollar franchises for Paramount Pictures.
hey, folks at Paramount....aren't you glad you bought out Desilu way back when?......those shows saved your asses....if not for Desilu, you guys didn't have an appreciable TV presence; Gulf + Western would have dumped you guys like a hot potato.....
Ironically a few years later her own show did a big spoof on the series which was a top show for two years prior to her Here’s Lucy series.

OMG that is the literal first episode I ever watched!
one of the greatest TV shows ever made with that amazing theme by the great Lalo Schifrin. The same man who did the theme to Enter The Dragon. it was never a show that was fast paced. it was methodical and took its time to tell the story. i loved it. the writing was clever. the way they used the sets were clever. The whole thing and one of the only hourlong primetime shows (at the time) to feature a Black man throughout the entire series. Barney was the only member of the team that was in every single episode. Peter Graves didn't come until the second season. The original man was Dan Briggs and then the rest of the seasons was Jim Phelps. Leonard Nimoy would come on by Season 4 as Paris and would star in one of my favorite episodes of the series, The Falcon. They will never make shows like this again. Just look at it. The aesthetic is hard to create considering everything is shot on digital now (unlike the shows that were shot on film)
Makes sense that it may be Greg Morris lighting the Match in the opening Credits.
Mission: Impossible, I Spy, Hogan's Heroes, Julia, The Mod Squad, Mannix and Star Trek were pioneers with putting blacks on screen and giving them fully fleshed out, human and realistic characters. If it weren't for these shows the boom of black television shows that happened in the 70's, 80's, 90's and early 2000's never would've happened!

The funniest episode I recall was one when Phelps went undercover into a foreign prison to get some information. At the end, there's a prison break where Phelps and Cinamon Carter are running down a road in a forest. A sedan drives up and Rollin Hand opens the back door. "Sorry! We only have room for one person. We pick the girl!"
Phelps' face drops for a second, then he shoves Hand inside while Carter goes around to the other side and they drive off into the sunset. Great stage business.
