“I was in love with what I heard,” says blues legend Buddy Guy about his introduction to the guitar. “I’ve dedicated my life to it. The guitar is the love of my life.”
In this 2014 episode of the At: Guitar Center podcast, Guy talks to host Nic Harcourt about his father buying him his first guitar from his earnings cutting wood, being so shy at his first gig that he got fired for not facing the audience, discussing “Strange Brew” with Eric Clapton and more.
“When I was about 16 or 17 years old, Guitar Slim-one of the greatest guitar players I ever saw-came to Baton Rouge,” remembers Guy about the first time he saw someone playing a Fender Stratocaster. “He walked in the door playing this guitar, and I thought, ‘What the hell is that?’ I didn’t even know what it was. It was this solid piece of wood sounding so loud. I fell in love with Strats right then.”
Guy also touches upon the responsibility of a performer to their audience, sharing his own evaluation for when it’s time to abandon stepping onstage.
“I’m a happy person when I’m playing,” he says. “And if I ever get to the point where I’m not happy, I don’t think I should go up there and play. I’d be cheating the people who think enough of me to come out and listen.”

The humility that these artists had is what is missing from today's landscape. For this man to say that after years of playing and inspiring generations of players, he still has more to learn, is the epitome of class. The world wouldn't be the same without his music!
ayou can take that to the bank
The bank of life... as reported by 'human being'!
Man, he's the Yoda of blues.
Thomas Kwok I don't think so, that's BB King.
Mihir Kamat lmao
He'd be the obi wan then
@@sampalmer6757 then would that make eric clapton be the luke skywalker of the blues
I’d say Robert Johnson’s the yoda and the rest are the remaining Jedi’s
A man this big still so humble. Such an example. He's words moved me.
absintobias *his

This man is so humble. He’s a joy to listen to.
Many years ago when I was but a young lad I played in a little basement band that had an opportunity to open for Mr.Guy. There were several other bands on the venue as well so my band and Buddy's band shared the same dressing room between our spots. The gig lasted several weeks. Buddy was playing a Guild Starfire thru a Standel solid state amp at the time. The great sax man A.C.Reed was with Buddy as well. I saw a chance to learn from a master and constantly asked Buddy to teach me. He never refused . He was beyond patient. He didn't have to spend his break time with a no name kid from South Jersey but he was the kindest man I ever met. He showed me anything I asked for and repeated things until I met with his approval. He even suggested ways I could do things better without my asking.Buddy held back nothing. Now I'm an old man and have spent my life as a professional guitar player. Buddy was my inspiration and it has been on my bucket list to personally thank him for his kindness that meant so much to me. I hope I get my chance but if not I hope he reads this. THANKS BUDDY!!
+prydonian460 Well done - and lucky you. We didn't get these opportunities in Australia back in the 60's and 70"s. I did get to shake his hand at a concert MANY years later.
+prydonian460 he has a club/restaurant in Chicago, south from downtown, if you're ever in Chicago go there, some/most nights he's there, signing the CDs and performing sometimes, he's 79 already, so go and thank him, I'm sure he'll appreciate.
I think he definitely will! I even have a feeling he'll recognize you ;)
+Harry Harshimoto Buddy never signed my guitar (because I didn't want him to ) but he played it and liked it and I still have that 67 Epiphone Riviera . I do have several picks he gave me though.
+Harry Harshimoto Seriously ?? I had it wired from the factory with the Gibson Varitone circuit in it so it is one of a kind but I didn't think it was worth that much. I also have the matching Riviera 12 string and Rivoli bass all of the same year. I bought these years ago when I was still in high school and was working at nights at a drive in movie .
Buddy Guy is a living treasure - and people should give him more credit for his singing as well as his guitar playing as his singing is great!
"So Jimi, what's it like to be the best guitar player in the world?"
"I don't know, you'll have to ask Buddy Guy."
+Brians Brain This was an interview? I want to read it.
+eliguaso22 its a joke
bruh
+BRAUN STROWMAN we get it Braun, you are big and strong! Now stop hugging the life out of people.
actually, that is a really jimi quote but he said to ask Rory Gallagher not Buddy.
Stevie Ray Vaughan is pretty good as well.
Nothing but respect for this man. One of the best of all time.
Pop
Buddy is the epitome of the term “living legend”. What a blessing it’s been to have had him around for as long as we’ve had him around. He’s our last link to the roots of the blues, him and Taj Mahal. Those two great bluesmen need to be cherished while they’re still here. ❤
Crazy how humble Buddy is. Still talks about learning from kids. He is almost 80 years old. Good guy all around.
One on one lesson on how to be humble and genuine , no words can describe my admiration for this man. God bless you Buddy
Saw Buddy Guy in a gig at the cafeteria in one of the dorm quads at the University of Maryland in ~1980. I did not know who he was. He played magnificently for maybe 40 people. At the break, someone invited him to our table and we shared a couple of pitchers of beer. This guy was so down to earth and nice. I will never forget that. Now I know how lucky i was to meet and talk to a legend. That's why I always say "still love Buddy Guy" whenever I post about guitarists. This guy is special, because he is such a happy, nice man. LOVE YOU BUDDY GUY!
bout made me wanna cry listening to him talk... thank you buddy! you are the blues!
Me too
Ok so it's not just me 😭
WOW this guy is the personification of the Blues
"I've been foolin' with it for quite a while and there's still a lot I don't know."

Great guy Buddy!
The legend speaks!
+Guitar Center I love this humble man!
What a great interview with Buddy Guy.
Many Thanks from a small town Southern guy.
The GOAT
That old fingerstyle blues will always soothe my soul, and Buddy Guy is one of the originals. He plays with all the emotion born of a lifetime of experience.
+Jimmy Saint Truth!
buddy uses a pick
This man is the prime example of how the world has changed from his time to ours. He was tearing up just talking about the things he loves and inspired him. He almost lost his cool completely when he was asked why the blues aren't on the radio anymore. Buddy Guy has an enormous heart, just like most the other old timers, thats why their blues are out of this world. You just can find that kind of passion anywhere anymore
To the 121 people who gave this a thumbs down I feel obligated to educate you. You are looking at and listening to one of the last living blues legends on the face of the earth. Once this man has passed on so does the true legacy of the blues. Clapton, Hendrix, Allman, Page, Beck, Townsend, Richards, SRV are just a few who site Buddy Guy as the reason they wanted to play electric blues. The good news is there are alot of young players today keeping the torch lit but we will NEVER replace this man or the other pioneers before him. God bless you Mr. Guy!!!
Years ago I went to the BB King Blues festival and saw Buddy and BB on the same night!
Buddy is such a great performer. He was wireless and took his Strat down into the audience and let kids strum on it. Amazing show!
What a wonderful man
I love how he still makes little mistakes here and there with his playing but it adds to the authenticity of the tune.
bullshit (horseshiiit)
Horst Jedlika you Ok there buddy?
Yess, it's part of his personality, and why I love him.
There are some great genius mistakes in his solos, kinda very natural, human.
..its called the blues,,
They aren't mistakes, they're bonus notes. LOL
I saw him perform last Saturday. I have been to a ton of concerts over the years, and his was up there with the best of them. Buddy Guy is simply incredible.
Humble just like Hendrix was. The best usually aren't the loudmouths.
so true and they all give off this vibe of being so patient with other guitar players whether their beginners or advanced and they always smile even if you just play some random notes.
"Listen to B.B King" hahaha, love how you can hear the blues in his voice. Man o man sounds like he's about to cry, thank god he's got a guitar for that.
Buddy is such a humble man. Such a great talent.
it's an honor to see him play live, what a legend.
I had the pleasure of seeing Buddy perform 3 times and am still looking forward to seeing him perform again. A true American treasure.
His gratitude is clearly demonstrated by just how emotional he is at certain points - LEGEND
I don't get to tell my Buddy Guy story very much, so I am going to use this opportunity. I went to Rush street on New Years Eve back in the late 80's and was hopping from one bar to the next. About two in the morning, we ended up at this little blues bar, can't remember the name, and there was this guy on stage with the black and white dot Strat and just killing the damn thing. After the set, he comes to the bar and we start talking. I told him that he looked like Buddy Guy, and he said that he get's that a lot. I said that for a cover band, that they were close to the real thing. He chuckled and said thanks, After a while he get's back up on stage and I realized it wasn't a cover band. It was Buddy. I thought I was going to throw up. I made such an ass if myself, drunk and stupid. I stayed till the end of the show and he was so cool, not mad or upset or nothing. Just a guy making a living onstage and that's all.
Charlie Foxtrot The 3rd man you had me crying laughing that was funny
How humble a true legend can be... what a man...
pure, genuine soul. class act, buddy's a gem.
Yeah whatever bro
The most humble, and honest guitar player I have ever seen in my life! There will NEVER be another guitarist of the same caliber as Buddy.
Mr. Buddy Guy, a national treasure, modest, humble and genuine, a true Southern gentleman. He is everything the music industry is not. And look at all the years that same industry kept him buried. I'm happy the British Invasion happened and educated me on the blues. For those that felt it was a slap in the face, I say, all good things come to those who wait. Buddy Guy speaks reverently of the blues masters who came before him. The public acknowledgement of Buddy Guy's talent is his vindication.
I'm a Rock/Metal guy who dabbles in a bit of blues now and then but, man is Mr. Guy a great blues player or what?! And he's got a very good voice perfect for his style.
Agreed
i would say, blues is so simple that not everybody can play it the right way
Garry Pane there is no right way bro rock on
Its simple until it isn't! Like the Bass!
i don't even like blues, but watching this guy play and sing, with all those years of experience and pain behind it, just puts you in a different world for a little bit. he has so much feeling and emotion in his voice and even in his hands, and the blues genre really brings that all out in the clearest way.
Lol the whole time I didn't know if he was about to cry or not
Me too I was reading comments and I thought he was crying it souns
ImThatGuyYouWishYouWere he's shy and anxious
The fuck?
He’s old as shit. Got that old man trem voice
Net Worth $300k...that makes me sad when some auto-tuned, talent-less person makes that off one song, Buddy clearly just loves what he does.
Black artists back in his day had very very shitty contracts and didn't get paid a lot.
brianna hughes I know but a few of them legends before they passed did well (Well as in a few million) Buddy seems happy anyway and looks amazing for his age :)
+brianna hughes people today get payed millions for songs with almost no true feel, made on computers, and you say it's just cause he's old, it's cause no one appreciates the masters, that actually know how to do something. (Not that it doesn't take skill and knowledge to make average computer music)
I know right... Loads of people don't get it! I feel sorry for them, because they'll never get to enjoy guys like Buddy like we do!
Taylor swift may be rich till her death, but her impact on music will fade like a leaf in the wind. Buddy's impact will be a solid brick foundation in the great tower of song that will never be forgotten. I promise you that.
Buddy Guy... Wow! humble, kind, gentle soul, father of blues to boot... what a gentleman. Totally impressed..
Excellent way to type it.You said it much better than I did. Thumbs Up to ya...
Buddy plays with feeling. I introduced my dad to Buddy Guy and now we listen to him together. 78 years young.
This whole video has been so inspiring for me...Amazing
Awesome!!! Loved it. Thanks for sharing with us.
Wendy Campbell Your very welcome
I'm a guitar player of 7 years.. I've been playing the blues for only about 6 months now, but I've always been shy or quiet about me being a musician when it came to friends or strangers asking me or asking me if I could play for them. This video and the way buddy talks about playing the guitar makes me proud to be a musician, and even more so a guitarist. I shouldn't hide it or by shy. I should be proud to be in the same "musician" category as Buddy Guy, BB King, SRV, etc.
There's something about the simplicity and life in the notes and chords he plays. Got me goosebumps at 05:09
I've admired Buddy Guy and his blues since the 1960s. I've met him in person, heard him live, multiple times, and admire everything about him. Great person, awesome guitarist, one of best ever.
I mean really. What a class act. His perspective is so different from mine, to put myself in his shoes really makes me think. I'm halfway through my 20s and have grown up with everything from Buddy Holly to Darkthrone. The most old school rock to the heaviest of metals. I can't imagine just a void being there in my childhood. No beatles, no sabbath, no zeppelin. None of the memories of my parents blasting records. I started playing when I was young too, but if you learn young nowadays you can't help but be clouded by the rock star mythos. The money, the women, etc. When he was a kid that was just nonexistent. He played just because he liked the way it sounded and it gave him that feeling, the feeling i'm sure any other musician knows. That's a really pure thing, to come from literally a blank slate to the legend he is now.
preach
All the legendary guitarist Clapton, Hendrix, Beck, Vaughan were all greatly inspired by Buddy Guys brilliant blues guitar licks..
I like Buddy Guy's music because he plays from the heart. You can't fake that kind of music.
Hero. Pure and simple, a hero.
I love him. Buddy Guy's music is so simple and perfect. He keeps it real. No reason to get overly fancy. =)
It takes a great man, who is great, to say that he is just a student of the guitar. This is especially true when so many people look up to him as a great guitar player. I am floored at what a humble and genuine guy Buddy Guy is. I have been to his bar in Chicago. I wish I could have met him because he is obviously a wonderful man. Keep jamming Buddy!
This video should have millions of likes and millions of views...
I love him...his talent, his sense of humor, his humility!!! About to see him on his farewell concert.
Such a beautiful and humble human being.
I just learned that this world class bluesman is also a world class man among men. Lots of life lessons in this video.
Yo this man sounds like he bouta break out in tears like every word he says that’s a blues man right there
wow, what an inspirational video, "if i can make you forget your problems for a couple of hours, ill be the happiest man that woke up that morning ...THAT, is an entertainer, god bless Buddy Guy, and god bless the Blues
My band The Smokers Blues Band got the gracious joy of sharing the stage with Buddy Guy this past weekend at Buddy Guy's Legends. He came up and did an impromptu few songs with us...we were in awe and it was amazing. Still can't believe it really happened. :-)
Genuinely seems like the nicest guy around
Buddy is such a humble Guy. A one of kind guitar player and he stragithly point out here that music should be for fun and joy.. When you dont have fun whlie you playing ,you better stop. I really want to meet this amazing man and talk to and learn more from him. I think more of the artist of today should listen to what this guy has to say. Im just a simple guitarist from sweden but ever since i learned to play the guitar about 20 years ago,my motto has been you shuold always have fun while you playing. Dont care about guitar brands and other less important stuff. Just play for the fun and joy.
BB king said, The Blues easy to learned hardest to master.I am still learning and not yet come close of scratching the surface and I started playing the blues in high school.
How often do you play if you don't mind me asking?
The best get into blues fusion - like Eric Gale - how hard is that???
Truly, the last of the old-school great blues guitar players, not a national treasure but a WORLD treasure: *BUDDY GUY*!
Legend... They don't make em like buddy no more...
Got see Buddy countless times from back in the 70' up until this Farwell tour, absolute monster on the axe influenced millions including Hendrix SRV Clapton Beck Page ect...totally down to earth got to hang out with him and Junior Wells backstage many times drinking that Courvoisier..
I am a 45 year old Chicago man born and bred....Love this beautiful man....The great Buddy Guy........................................
Blues isn't my favourite music style but the things the plays sound frickin' awesome!
Jerry Shelton Doesn't mean you have to like blues. Everyone knows that is correct though :)
Jerry Shelton Yep!
For someone who thought he couldn’t sing... He has an amazing voice!! Love Buddy Guy.
What a man!!!
What a blues man!!!
What a legend!!!!
This world would be a much better place if we had more Buddy Guy's around, humility at it's finest.
What a humble, gracious guy.
Just hearing this man speak really makes me think about how I could be a better person. His music our gift :)
Man, I like watching this video just for Buddy's ramblings... He's such ana wesome guy!
Can see the passion/respect Buddy has for the blues someone of his stature still being that humble is mega inspiring! One of the Greats living legend!
Such an incredibly inspiring conversation, I love what he says about performing being a way to show love, "If you tell somebody you love them you can lie but if you show them you can't lie"
What a gorgeous personality he is ... man we people of "today" are way to egoistic and spoiled by the excess. All haters can learn a lot from him, about how to be humble and respectful to others, even those younger than you, even those who learned from you. Just wow, what a man! And this personality can be felt in his music. Big respect
In 2001, I sat right next to Buddy Guy in his restaurant/bar in Chicago. I was peppering a customer with Qs about Buddy Guy for about 5 minutes. She finally told me that the gentleman next to me was the legend. I literally fell off the bar stool. I mustered up enough nerves to get his autograph on one of his CDs. He was very quiet and humble. In fact, his restaurant was named LEGEND. I planned my Chicago trips going to the Legend. The food is good and lots of people from all over the world attend and the great music is unforgettable! My last visit was back in 2018! I relish the Memories!❤
this world needs more people like this guy to be under the spotlight...
What an incredible man... Very heartfelt interview !!!!! What a humble guy!!!!
He is so down to earth ,,he didn't forget where he came from..That says a lot about his character...He can play like Hendrix,,stevie and Clapton but doesn't get as much credit...At 77 years old he still sounds great.. Like he says Im 77 years young!!
Buddy guy was a big inspiration to jimi and jimi’s style. Buddy guy a real living legend for sure!
Love Buddy Guy . Thank you for you're music.
Happy 87th birthday Buddy Guy! It was so good to see you in Albuquerque last Friday night, we sang to you to try to pay you something back and it felt great. Thank you teacher, I'll never forget it!
What a cool dude. Amazing history, humble even though such a great guitar player. He can teach everyone a lesson in humility. Just a nice guy.
Buddy is one of funniest, nicest guys I've ever met. Puts on a hell of a show too
Falling asleep to his music on a walkman while traveling in Oz... most beautiful thing I wouldn't want to forget.
There's a deep and wise lifetime in every note that Mr. Guy plays.
honestly i love how almost everyone now a days can get a guitar but it just hurts to say that playing guitar isent rele the most rare thing any more what is rare tho is finding someone who can play guitar well and has talent
A true Blues man and humble to boot.
I made my mum watch the first minute of this video to show her Buddy's poignant vocals and she loved the very thing about it that I did - his vibrato. She likes to watch his performances on UA-cam and enjoys his showmanship quite a lot. Now, mind you, my mum comes from a Indian classical music background and yet, loves the blues. Music has no limitations, no discrepancies... It brings everybody together.
Thanks a ton, Buddy Guy. You are love!
100% Humble, 100% genuine.... Thank you Mr Guy
Man. I'd listen to him all day. Such an inspiration listening to these guys talk. Why do we even bother with the run of the mill two bit celebrities anyway
Amazing interview! This video made me glad again to learned English
Nice of Nic Harcourt and Guitar Center to take the time to interview one of the greats of American music!
How I'd love to constantly hear the blues on the radio
What an Incredible soul !
what a humble amazing man. I was lucky enough to see him live and man.. I wish I had 1% of whatever he's got going on.
this was a great interview
These blues people are lovely brought a tear to my eye
True legend, true man, true tune. Bless you
Up front I'm a metal head, but I do really dig blues players now and again. Buddy Guy is in my top ten guitar players of all time.
You should do man, whatever genre you prefer it's always good to look at the roots to see how it progressed. Blues is important if you want to be able to play things that sound tasteful.
Life changing wisdom listening to this guy.
What an honor to be able to interview him. What a great guy too.
Priceless! Thank you. Peace, one love
