It's nice to see Buddy looking so good and in good shape. I remember seeing him out on Yonge St. in Toronto back in the 70s. He used to come to Toronto quite often and I saw him and Junior Wells at the Brunswick House back then. He was a very cool dude and, at the time probably in the top two or three electric players in the world. The man has a PhD. in the blues.
He played near my town a few years back, & I was blown away. First off, his band was incredible by themselves, & he walked out & all around in the crowd, even up to the top of the bleacher seats I was sitting in, all the while playing brilliantly. Never seen anything like that live. I respect & appreciate the Hell out of blues music, but I don't listen often to it, but Buddy's blues are an exception, he's one of a relative few that can truly make his guitar sing or cry like it's a living, breathing organism. Again, I was mesmerized watching & listening to him play.
Jimi was a phenomenal guitarist by any standards in the Cosmos. It was hard to believe he was playing the same instrument as other guitarists - it sounded so very different. The first time I saw him, like BB, was as Little Richard's guitarist. As I recall he just sat on his amp and strummed along in a fairly pedestrian manner... he looked very unassuming - almost embarrassed to be there. But Buddy really opened my eyes to what blues guitar was capable of - no wonder Beck calls him God!
@Joshua Dowling waiting on the train...your right! Absolutely the best of the blues. But then especially on the rehearsal tracks Jimi really didn't want you to hear he unleashes some of the best hard rock soloing ever done. Still make my hair on my back stand up every time.
Buddy and B.B. are men that have pioneered a genre that is just as familiar sounding, as it is riveting. These are the true kings of the blues and I can only imagine Jimi's adoration when he met them. B.B met him at a time where Jimi was so shy and quiet. "He didn't drink or smoke then." People always thought of Hendrix as this wild man but that was him performing. Not long prior to Buddy meeting him, he had been the back up band member who didn't even have the courage to sing. Thank God for Chas Chandler taking him to England and promoting him. If not for him, Jimi wouldn't have even gotten big in the states.
BB said that he never spoke to Jimi again after meeting him that one time in Mobile while Jimi was playing in Little Richard's band. He must have forgotten that they jammed together at place in NYC in 1968 called The Generation Club with Paul Butterfield's band. There are recordings of it. BB King introduces the guys that were playing, they did some covers and jammed on the blues for over an hour.

I always tell this story about Buddy Guy. I was bar hopping Rush street in Chicago. If you've ever been there, you know what i'm talking about. I commented how he looked like Buddy Guy, and he smiled and said "Yeah, I get that alot" I said "well, anyone who looks like him I will buy a drink" And I did. These are the types of interview that are gold, just telling it like it happened and there thoughts, I think every big name needs to do this, we would learn so much more
@guitarmaniax I agree. People were so enthralled by his theatrics and flash that they overlooked his genius. I discovered this only a few years ago and it still just blows me away. Hendrix was NOT left-handed. The ONLY thing he did left-handed was play the guitar. Being a guitarist, I can't even imagine attempting that. It only adds to his legend.
I was lucky enough to tour supporting BB and Buddy. So I got to meet and talk with them. BB is so sweet and gracious... Buddy 'l cutcha(we joked)... If only I coulda met Jimi. 2 outta these three aint bad...
I met and interviewed BB in the 1970's, and have seen Buddy play live, but never got the chance to see Jimi play in concert. I was certain that I would eventually get to see Jimi play live, and then he was gone. RIP to both men.
2:37 B.B. says he asked Jimi when he realized Jimi was a lefty, "Why didn't you change the strings?" B.B. must have been confused between Jimi and Albert King because Albert King who was also a lefty was the one who dIdn't change the strings from right handed to left handed. Jimi did change the strings.
@God Love he could play it with the strings upside down. That's how he originally learnt it was only later that he did switch the strings around, here's a video with rolling stones n him picking up a strung up righty guitar flipping it and playing just fine. ua-cam.com/video/Rqqaw9iN0Js/v-deo.html
I saw Buddy at Steve Paul's Scene in "The Village." It's the club Buddy talks about in this interview. I'll never forget...Buddy had his guitar resting on the pipes in the ceiling and was playing with it with just his left hand...hammering on the strings...AMAZING!
I met Jimi on March 15th, 1968. (yes, "The Ides of March!!!) I was barley legal...just turned 18. We continued our friendship beyond that night. I was hanging with him when he did that HUGE memorial jam for Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. at The Generation Club in Greenwich Village, NYC. He told me about Buddy at that time, but I'm sure if he had met him yet...only that if I wanted to get into the blues (and I did) that Buddy Guy was someone I should listen to....
Wow to share the same air with a legend like that is something but to be friends with one is a whole other thing. Do you have any other stories that you remember from those days?
I do not know how many times those two Blues legends have been asked to talk about Jimi !! I met B.B. King twice when I was his french publicist for the "Deuces Wild" CD. In January 1998, I came to New York with a journalist. After the interview, I gave to Mr B.B. King a copy of the jam he did with Jimi Hendrix at Generation Club (NY, April 1968) because few months earlier (Birmingham, UK, Nov 1997) he said to me Jimi never gave him the tape ! There is a shot with B.B. and me holding the tape !!
A truly wonderful series, You and Me and B.B. King. These three episodes were amazing with Buddy and B, and Bill Wax hostingmade everyone feel like flies on the wall. Thanks so much
George "Buddy" Guy (born July 30, 1936) is an American blues guitarist and singer. Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 - May 14, 2015), known professionally as B.B. King, was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later blues electric guitar players.
I was astonished to hear the King talk. I'm so used to his guitar doing the talking for him, and as soon as I heard his voice here, I just said "the man's human".
B.B. said Jimi didn't change strings to left-handed ? That's a common myth. Jimi DID change the strings over to left-handed ! Look closely at pictures and the low E is at top... just like right-handed players. Also I go to the EMP a lot in seattle and his Woodstock guitar is there (and others) and all are strung for left-handers.
just saw this clip and wondered the same thing. I've corrected many people who say Hendrix played a right handed guitar without changing the strings around. Every video I've seen debunks that, I wonder why BB said that?
Because he could play both ways. It didn't matter if the guitar was configured for right handed or left handed people. Just goes to show how good he was.
buddinmaplestory buddinmaplestory - I did some googling and found some posts to back up what you're saying. I am pasting here: James Marshall Hendrix was naturally left-handed but his father, Al, initially tried to force the young James to play right-handed. Al Hendrix reportedly believed playing left-handed was a sign of the devil. Why so? It has its roots in language. “Sinister”, in ancient Latin, means “left” and also “unlucky” - in modern times someone “sinister” is un-trusted or even evil. These linguistic oddities persist. “Right” means “correct” in English, obviously. In French, “gauche” means both “left” and “awkward.” So, even in language, left-handers get a bum deal. Jimi Hendrix tended to write right-handed - there are photos of Jimi signing autographs and writing lyrics right-handed. And Jimi did learn to play guitar right-handed, as demanded by his father Al. Jimi modified his first (right-handed) guitars for his natural leftism - restringing and changing the nut. But when Al was around, he felt he had to play a right-handed guitar simply flipped over (treble E at the top). So Jimi taught himself to be “both-handed.” Free’s Paul Kossoff, when he was a young guitar salesman in London, once recalled Jimi circa 1967 trying a guitar in the shop where Koss worked, and simply flipping it over so the treble E was closest to his face. And Hendrix still played brilliantly. Maybe all this explains why Jimi could play just about anything on the guitar?
Dennis Parrish Gary Moore was left-handed, but learned to play right-handed, and continued to play right-handed all the way through his life. Some say that was part of the reason he had so much control and strength in his fretwork, and why his pick hand position always seemed a bit odd, compared to what we normally see.
I just noticed... you never hear from anybody Jimi Hendrix met that he was a jerk to them - except maybe Noel Redding, his bass player in the Experience. He just got cut loose suddenly so that Billy Cox, a friend, could play with him. (Personally speaking, Jimi's best sounding tracks had Noel Redding on bass - just an opinion) But that move was partly business and not something Jimi did personally. He was always a nice guy in his personal interactions, and you don't hear that about very many super famous musicians these days.
i love, love, love these two men amazing how they know how to make their guitats talk to us. sue loved to meet bbking some day maybe never know!!!!!!!!!! peace &stay coooool!
john pshitek He could do it all man lol once he got big and could afford stuff he always played regularly stringed but I read this biography on him where people are quoted saying that he could play a guitar left handed or right handed and just flip a guitar over with upside down strings and play it just as good.
Travis Gooden Yes indeed !!, Jimi knew the Guitar inside-out, there are many people who have witnessed Jimi play upside-down, right handed & every other way, He was ambidextrous like many Genius' are, Peace.

Way to make it about yourself. No one came here to read about your husband. Famous people go to a different heaven than regular people anyway...
These are the types of interview that are gold, just telling it like it happened and there thoughts, I think every big name needs to do this, we would learn so much more
i'm a blessed guy. i saw them alive here in brazil.
well, you'd not see them dead, in Brazil; since they didn't die there. LOL but, I get what you mean... peace...
Great interview clip with two of the greats. Who on earth could possibly "dislike' this?
Justin Bieber and his flock of sheep I expect....
I was lucky enough to tour supporting BB and Buddy. So I got to meet and talk with them. BB is so sweet and gracious... Buddy 'l cutcha(we joked)... If only I coulda met Jimi. 2 outta these three aint bad...
So cool. Man if you're a guitar player this is so awesome.
I met and interviewed BB in the 1970's, and have seen Buddy play live, but never got the chance to see Jimi play in concert. I was certain that I would eventually get to see Jimi play live, and then he was gone. RIP to both men.
BE COOL DUDE.
Guy and B.B. are two of my favorites. I like listening to them talk, too. They always seem like good men. You can't always say that about musicians.
2:37 B.B. says he asked Jimi when he realized Jimi was a lefty, "Why didn't you change the strings?"
B.B. must have been confused between Jimi and Albert King because Albert King who was also a lefty was the one who dIdn't change the strings from right handed to left handed.
“I had had a couple shots” hell yeeeee
I just realize that I saw this about 6-7 times in a row. Got mesmerize listening these to legends talking about legend.
B.B King and Jimi Hendrix my two guitar heros together in a room talking is the coolest thing I've ever heard in my life
lol "Be cool dude!"
Miss my bud, Mr. B.B.K.. R.I.P. .
A truly wonderful series, You and Me and B.B. King. These three episodes were amazing with Buddy and B, and Bill Wax hostingmade everyone feel like flies on the wall. Thanks so much
I wish they were my grAndPa's could listen to them all day lol
George "Buddy" Guy (born July 30, 1936) is an American blues guitarist and singer.
Riley B. King (September 16, 1925 - May 14, 2015), known professionally as B.B. King, was an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later blues electric guitar players.
Ojalá y lo tradujeran al español, soy fan de estos monstruos del Blues.
I was astonished to hear the King talk. I'm so used to his guitar doing the talking for him, and as soon as I heard his voice here, I just said "the man's human".
Legendary Awesomeness!
Thank You ; )
B.B. king and buddy guy, the best music duo ever
Love how B.B king double checks which way a left handed guitar is held 🤣
So cool that they're getting all this stuff on tape before they're gone. Nothing like a couple of greats reminiscing about the old days.
Buddy Guy looks about 30 years younger than his actual age...
I dont think BBs ever said anything bad about anyone and would,he is such a swell man. He is such a great person and admire his love of music.
Encontro épico! Gostaria muito de ver ou ouvir alguma gravação!
My two all times favorites guitarists have met ?! Jimi and BB are the reason I start guitar !
B.B. said Jimi didn't change strings to left-handed ?
That's a common myth. Jimi DID change the strings over to left-handed !
Look closely at pictures and the low E is at top... just like right-handed players.
Also I go to the EMP a lot in seattle and his Woodstock guitar is there (and others) and all are strung for left-handers.
just saw this clip and wondered the same thing. I've corrected many people who say Hendrix played a right handed guitar without changing the strings around. Every video I've seen debunks that, I wonder why BB said that?
Dunno... even in old pics of Jimi with "...the Flames" (?)... if you look closely you can see low E at top.
So Jimi taught himself to be “both-handed.”
Free’s Paul Kossoff, when he was a young guitar salesman in London, once recalled Jimi circa 1967 trying a guitar in the shop where Koss worked, and simply flipping it over so the treble E was closest to his face.
Legends talking about another legend.
Buddy Guy performing "Stormy Monday" April 7th 1968 plus a jam with Jimi Hendrix
He was always a nice guy in his personal interactions, and you don't hear that about very many super famous musicians these days.
bb lived to 89 years old Chuck berry 90...🎶🎵 better keep your guitars🎸🎸
i love, love, love these two men amazing how they know how to make their guitats talk to us. sue loved to meet bbking some day maybe never know!!!!!!!!!! peace &stay coooool!
I didn't know Hendrix played upside down!!! I always thought he restrung his guitar for a left hand player!
William Seroyer He did, but according to BB he could play it either strung properly or literally upside down.
William Seroyer no, his guitar was upndown, stringing was standard
john pshitek He could do it all man lol once he got big and could afford stuff he always played regularly stringed but I read this biography on him where people are quoted saying that he could play a guitar left handed or right handed and just flip a guitar over with upside down strings and play it just as good.
Travis Gooden Yes indeed !!, Jimi knew the Guitar inside-out, there are many people who have witnessed Jimi play upside-down, right handed & every other way, He was ambidextrous like many Genius' are, Peace.
+MrJeditwinz Wow..that's something.
He is one of the Greatest Blues guitarists the world has ever known.
