- No detailed notes today since I'm already late in getting this video up, but suffice it to say we've got a pretty fun cross-regional Armagnac battle here: two small family producers, each with a focus on a different distinctively Armagnac-y grape. Except rather than one battle, it's more like four one-on-ones between brandies of comparable age, and the majority wins. And because I only had three Jean-Bons, I'm also throwing a Bas-Armagnac spoiler in. And here's how it all went:
BATTLE NO. 1:
- Dom. de Danis 2006 Armagnac-Ténarèze, Cask No. 13 (100% folle blanche distilled by Marc Saint Martin; bottled circa 2023; 46% ABV), 85+/100
- Dom. de Jean-Bon 1999 16 Year Old Bas-Armagnac, selected by K&L Wines (100% baco; 45% ABV), 84+/100
BATTLE NO. 2:
- Dom. de Danis 1988 34 year old Armagnac-Ténarèze, Cask No. 34 bottled by Grape of the Art (100% folle blanche distilled by Marc Saint Martin; bottled 3/23, 387 bottles; 47.6% ABV), 85/100
- Dom. de Jean-Bon 1990 30 Year Old Bas-Armagnac, selected by K&L Wines (100% baco; 45% ABV), 87+/100
BATTLE NO. 3:
- Dom. de Danis 1983 Armagnac-Ténarèze, Cask No. 5 (100% folle blanche distilled by Marc Saint Martin; bottled circa 2023; 41% ABV), 85+/100
- Dom. del Cassou 1987 35 Year Old Bas-Armagnac, Cask No. 5 bottled by L'Encantada for Renaissance 2 (100% baco; 400 bottles; 47.4% ABV), 87/100
BATTLE NO. 4:
- Dom. de Danis 1979 Armagnac-Ténarèze, Cask No. 7 (ugni blanc and baco, distilled by Marc Saint Martin; bottled circa 2023; 46% ABV), 85/100
- Dom. de Jean-Bon 1979 41 Year Old Bas-Armagnac, selected by K&L Wines (100% baco; 45% ABV), 87/100
And there you have it: the Danises are good, and consistently good - and that 2006 is kind of a steal - but the battle nevertheless goes 3-1 for Bas-Armagnac and baco. But honestly, we're all winners here, right?

Great lineup, great video!
Thanks!!
I have the lencantada bottle I got for an extremely reasonable price but haven't tried it yet. Still need to get some Baraillon
Yes you do! More Baraillon coming soon...
The Danis 1979 should be Ugni Blanc and Baco and is stored in a tonneau - hence the T7 label.
Fixed, thanks!
Interestingly, while I also enjoyed that L’Encantada it was also the last bottling from them that I’ve bought, loosely analogous to why I pretty much don’t buy Foursquare anymore. Nothing against them, haven’t really had a single bad thing from either yet, there just seems to be relatively narrow range of profiles for what both put out (fully aware the L’Encantds is not a producer, but to me there’s a strong through line to what they choose…)
I too think that's a weakness. Quality is consistently high, yes, but their cards are showing so far as the kinds of casks they tend to pick...
