There's an excellent home video of Cher singing "Fernando" at a party. She starts singing along with it, her voice literally overpowers the speakers, and it's incredible. She realizes someone is filming her and gets embarrassed but eventually starts singing again. For anyone that's never seen it, I definitely recommend looking it up!
Yeah, that much wealth can buy the best cosmetic surgeons. I feel that her voice has deepened though, which is to be expected. Since her voice is worth so much I'm sure she's had work done to help preserve it, as long as she avoids the doctor that ruined Julie Andrews vocal chords, she'll be fine...
I'm a straight male and a fan for over 40 years - their music is timeless, wholesome like the group, and the girls were absolutely beautiful. Only recorded 110 songs in their ten years of Fame yet here we are introducing their music to another generation. My grandsons fave is thank u for the music and I thank them for their music too!
Sorry she looks so Botoxed and plastic-surgeried, she can’t even move. She hasn’t aged gracefully at all. And she couldn’t learn the lyrics? They aren’t in English? They’re backwards? Why is ABBA loved by gays? It’s two men writing songs for two women to sing about men. And the two women were iconic opposites of cool and blonde and hot and ginger... perfect for drag queens to perform... plus the camp outfits... and the fact that the songs were brilliantly written
My favorite as a kid was "Dancing queen" . Frida went on to record solo and one of my all time favorite new wave(ish) singles from that work she did is " I know there is something going on". Sadly, the album didn't chart well but the single did well internationally.
I meant that as a tongue in cheek compliment. A fellow actor jibed with me and said, "You're a big gay, aren't you?" just because I liked musicals, and that was my response. Just realize you can't read tone on a youtube comment.
ABBA's music is simple yet complex if that makes sense. The lyrics are quite simple but yet are strung together in a way that hits the highest levels of poignancy and depth so that you feel all those different emotions that the song wants you to feel on the deepest possible level. I mean One Of Us and Slipping Through My Fingers can and does make me sob at the drop of a hat while Dancing Queen gives me a bad case of happy feet and shaking hips. There's no pretense with ABBA's music - it's there, it's deep and it doesn't hide.
The Greek Islands are some of the most beautiful I have seen. I love this movie partially because of that...but also loved ABBA. If YOU EVER go to Greece, the islands of Santorini, Mykenos and Rhodes are fascinating. Santorini is my favorite. Cobblestone streets, stark white "hotels" built into the side of the cliff overlooking what used to be a huge volcano but has filled with water. The quaint hotels on the side of the cliff have the bright blue roofs, the brightly colored shutters, lots of beautiful flowers. Approaching Santorini by way of a ferry is just.....a complete surprise and absolutely breathtaking.
I don't think the music has anything to do with the LGBTQ+ community liking or relating to it. I think it's just great music that crosses ALL cultural boundaries.
I mean as a gay person there's not a lot of music that is made FOR us, and especially not back in the day, so gay people kind of flock to certain bands and starts. And it's very fitting that a band like ABBA, beloved by gay people, is turned into a musical. Musicals are full of gay people in the cast and behind the scenes. So while music can be loved by all, it is very significant for this minority group, and because gay culture has been erased in history, i think that makes it all the more important to shine a light on it.
Cath A lot of Gays in the 80's. Look for the New wave Groups. :) All the music is awesome. Erasure is on of them. Pet shop Boys too. :) My Sister is Gay and these our go too for great music. ❤❤❤
abbasolutely agree. this is simply one of the best cover versions ... ever. not that that is so hard, most cover versions are a waste of time. sinead o'connor, of course, would be a shining example of how to redo and improve cover songs with 'nothing compares 2u' and 'sacrifice' and pet shop boys do marvellous covers too. cher makes this song her own, and i just loved the way they wove it into the show. sooooooo well done, the whole audience cheered. love and peace to you and all, xxxxxxx
This movie should be honored by a Lifetime All-Time Greatest award! There will never be another like it! The first movie paled in comparison, even though it was a good movie. Cher was over the top in this movie! Why can't Hollywood pay attention. Even the Boomers turned out to see this movie, over and over! I'd go see it AGAIN right now if it was back in theatres!
Speaking as a gay male, I grew up in a very small town, and everyone knew I was different before I knew. When I listen to their music, it takes me back to a simpler time. I love the songs from both movies.
Tacoma98 I’m calling it like it is...STRAIGHT UP BS! I have Loved ABBA since I was 11 years old and definitely when the Songs were not in just English. What a ridiculous comment...Wow
Well since this is the Gay Times channel, I love the flow of the interview but I can't stop staring at that beautiful table runner. It's so pretty. The whole set up is so pretty. I wish I live in a greek island styled for a hollywood film set 🥺💕
Cher was not feeling him henny....she never even looked his way...and her facial expressions said it all....i got my whole life from her subtle shading...
About the last question, not too related with ABBA music specifically but In the original movie one of Sophie’s dads Harry comes out as gay, plus there’s a lot of speculation about Donna being bi because in the second movie when young Donna sang “When I Kissed The Teacher” they specifically changed the pronoun of who she’s singing about as a “she” :D When Frida and Agnetha sang it in ABBA, they said “he” so it was changed for the movie. either way, I love the low key ways they inject a small message into these hyper heterosexualized films. Like hey, remember this exists to and this is very important and a celebratory kind of love in our world to! I mean personally I’m asexual and aromatic but I’m all in for more positive representation of the LGBT+ community in films and in music culture
yes it is, but she didn't get her thoughts across clearly & it got worse the more she tried to explain. What I think she meant was because Benny & Bjorn are Swedish, to write it in English is a second language and as such their grasp on words flowing along isn't the norm - in some cases short responses is all that's needed to get a point across without excess words. And their sentence structure is different to ours - similarly like how Germans will use a verb at the end of a sentence rather than earlier on.. Does that explain a bit better ?
Supposedly, Cher is only in the last 10 minutes or so of the film. I doubt that she and Garcia had a chance to talk to each other much since they probably only had a day or two of shooting. So, in fact, they're strangers. Would be different if they had been characters with scenes together throughout the filming and spent a couple of months together on set. I think it would have been much better to have interviewed them separately.
I grew up on Abba music.Fernando came out in the Spring time around Easter. It was an anthem of those heady 70's teenager years.Cher is simply fabulous.I would choose someone from the LGBT community over any other in a heartbeat.Im biased,I am the mother of a transgender son and foster son and I'm not apologising.💟
I don't even know or care about all the lyrics to the song Fernando. I love the song because of the tempo, cadence and romanticism and sense of adventure the song conveys of the words of the song I do understand and remember that speaks to the human condition of wanting to be loved by someone.
It’s not a romantic song or about wanting to be loved. Can you hear the drums Fernando I remember long ago another starry night like this In the firelight Fernando You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar I could hear the distant drums And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar They were closer now Fernando Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally I was so afraid Fernando We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die And I'm not ashamed to say The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando Though I never thought that we could lose There's no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando Now we're old and grey Fernando And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand Can you hear the drums Fernando Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the Rio Grande I can see it in your eyes How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando Though I never thought that we could lose There's no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando Though I never thought that we could lose There's no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando Yes, if I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando
2:28 Cher: "And also because they didn't write really in English. You know I mean that they were searching for things, they would turn things around like in Fernando. It was really hard for me to learn it in the beginning because it's not English, you know. Things were turned upside down but that's what makes it really interesting when you get into the songs"
King Person she has had plenty of surgery and proudly admits it. She once said and u quote “if I want to staple my tits to my back that’s my business.” She doesn’t give a good damn what anyone thinks. Love her!
what did cher mean, by saying that the songs are not written in proper english and things are turned upside down? has it to do with the grammar Abba used?
Okay but what Cher said about learning the song Fernando is so true because you can try and guess what word will come next in certain parts of the song or how they are said but you won’t be correct most of the time. Trust me I know from experience😂
I think I know why the gay community likeabba cher Donna Summer Liza Minnelli Judy Garland is because we are fussy we only like the best it's simple as that
I have seen Cher video a couple times and I finally recognize that Cher's voice sounds young. Are they speaking English by any other reasons ? I feel English and they say I am wrong.
I hate how everything is being appropriated by the LGBTQ community. Look people, music doesn’t have sex, doesn’t have color, doesn’t have orientation. ABBA’s music still resonates because of their genius, their cheesiness, their catchiness, and their sheer beauty and rock and roll style (Watch Out, Hey Hey Helen, Hole in Your Soul). Coming from a man who likes men.
Is Cher Homophobic because she didn't really answer the question and Andy did. She just went on to say that it wasn't written in English and stuff, idk.
perth45 She was saying how English was ABBA’s second language and you can tell that from how they construct their songs. Their word choice and sentence compositions are indicative of someone whose first language is not English. She was saying because their word choice is so peculiar and not like regular American music, it was hard for her to memorize the lyrics. You’ve gotta remember...she’s a songwriter so she has a formulaic approach to music, so it would put her out of her comfort zone to cover foreign artists.
It's actually about the 1910 Mexican Revolution. The original Swedish version was more about reminiscing over a lost love. But I highly doubt Andy knew about that,
The second movie was good and I did enjoy it,mostly for the Abba songs, but to me first one was much better and the songs just seamlessly fit into the movie, whereas the second not so much.
Aciu gerbiu jus ❤👍👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 Jaunas budamas isiringdavau sau geriausia dainininka mokejau pazinti geriausia matidavau kaip atiduoda savo duse dainavimui.Dar karta aciu ☺👍
well yes as a matter of fact it was originally done in swedish for frida's 1976 solo album. she does another superb job of it. but i must admit, i was a bit stunned with that comment from her too ... any one else understand what she was trying to say? love and peace to you and all, xxxxxxx
Tobias Hørsted "Fernando" was originally in Swedish released a year earlier by Ana-Frid Lyngstad on her solo album. ua-cam.com/video/Ys4lyJiqG8E/v-deo.html
Tobias Hørsted I think Cher meant that the English translation was difficult to understand. Some of the phrasing in ABBAs lyrics are charmingly awkward.
I think she means that there just wasn't any really good way to translate the original version of the song. They had to translate the original lyrics as best they could, and the fact that English wasn't the songwriter's first language and they needed to make the words match the rhythm and notes that were there already while still conveying something close to the song's original meaning, meant that the English lyrics use fairly stilted phrasing that you'd never hear a native English speaker come up with. Lines like "We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die" or "Though I never thought that we could lose, there's no regret" are more than a little awkward. So, it's not the colloquial English we're familiar with. That's why it's so hard.
I from LGBT myself, but I didnt understand what LGBT thing have to do with a question about abba. they shove LGBT issue all over everywhere now, and it's like getting on my nerves as fck
You wouldn't understand what she's talking about honey, the song is English yes but it was written by foreign songwriters Benny and Bjorn in other words the construction of the songs they write are very different from what American singers and songwriters are use to. Cher being an artist and songwriter herself can identify those things better than we can, to us it's just a song with English words but she can dig a little deeper and tell u some interesting stuff about music having been in the industry over 50 years
Cher is 72 and looks like in her late ‘40s. That’s a masterpiece of surgery!!!!! from that interview, you can kind of feel Cher is just not that into Andy Garcia...
I like how they try to break it down and analyze why the LGBT love ABBA, the answer isn't that deep. The reason the LGBT loves ABBA is that it's basically dance music, from a different era, but dance music non the less. And gay boys LOVE dance music. Look at any gay boys favorite play list and you'll see a mix of club music. It seems to be built into our genes to love dance music. That gene isn't as strong with me, but I still have it. Maybe it's because it's upbeat and fun, and since we have to deal with so much negative shit from the world, cranking up the volume on an upbeat song drowns out the crap we deal with, if only for a little while.
Having seen this film, I think I am ready to pack my bags and leave for a remote Greek Island to build my hotel and have a child 😂
hamporpabor347 I thought it was made in Croatia
Ngoc Minh Nguyen Hoai It's set in Greece
Thats what i´m gonna do????
The fictional story is set in Greece, but the filming was set in Croatia.
rocker girl i just go to the hotel myself no 😊barn no no baby

Cher walks and sings exactly the same as she did at 20!
Remarkable woman.

I keep wanting to clear my throat when Andy Garcia speaks
Oh great, now I have to as well lol.
Same lol
I just did....
Me too
Lmao look at Cher's posture the whole time i love her she's a QUEEN

Cher looks amazing for being ageless
Yeah and this is from someone who once said "I don't think I am going to live that long" back in the 1960s
Sorry she looks so Botoxed and plastic-surgeried, she can’t even move. She hasn’t aged gracefully at all. And she couldn’t learn the lyrics? They aren’t in English? They’re backwards? How insulting and what in hell was she talking about? She couldn’t learn them because they are real and not paltry like in the songs she’s use to singing and shows the lame Hollywood mentality we have to accept as stardom. Ugh!
One of the best songs and scene ever.
We were enjoying the whole movie and when Cher came up, she stole the whole show! My eyes were on her not in everybody anymore.
"Fernando". The song that was originally meant to be a swedish lyric solo song for Frida and became this huge ABBA hit !
Cher is 72 and looks like in her late ‘40s. That’s a masterpiece of surgery!!!!!
dar ten ikr she looks absolutely gorgeous and I cant believe shes 72 and shes that beautiful
Also, she's only 3 years older than Meryl Streep, whose mother she is playing in the movie.
This is the sort of movie where you realize so much of this doesn't make ANY sense, but you sort of shrug and just go with it.
I hate the lips pumped up. If. Wish she'd stayed with her original face. She was killer gorgeous.
I don’t care what you say about this iconic woman and
Plastic surgery
She Cher has the true beauty face structure that can never be taken away
I love and adore her
The true Queen of beauty and poise

Well, no reason for gay people to get all the good music. Plenty room to share.
My favorite as a kid was "Dancing queen" . Frida went on to record solo and one of my all time favorite new wave(ish) singles from that work she did is " I know there is something going on". Sadly, the album didn't chart well but the single did well internationally.

Alex Alex nothing homophobic about that. That word is so overused it's pathetic
It's straightphobic
ABBA's music is simple yet complex if that makes sense. Very well put!
Excellent explanation!! You nailed it!
Dude you understand me
warriorbard wow! Very well said!! And soo true!!🙌🏻👏🏻🦋
The Greek Islands are some of the most beautiful I have seen. I love this movie partially because of that...but also loved ABBA. If YOU EVER go to Greece, the islands of Santorini, Mykenos and Rhodes are fascinating. Santorini is my favorite. The second movie was actually filmed in the Adriatic islands of Croatia, though the setting was supposed to still be Greece.
The music & rhythms are melodious & infectious. The lyrics are meaningful. The performances are flawless.
Andy Garcia's answer to the last question was lovely.
Wow... "Fernando" was always my N⁰1 ABBA song!🎵
Cher is gorgeous even in her 70's
Ana’s music is Alive, and hits a vein every time I hear one. The same for me today, as yesterday...love them.
Cher looks amazing for 150! I've seen the film and she was brilliant in it.
Bahahahah 😂 lmao

Andy finally got the answer right, it's because we can all relate to love stories...no matter the genre.
Cher looks amazing
To this day, I cry every time I hear it
I saw the thumbnail and was like “Mother Gothel”
Long after the mainstream decided ABBA was cheesy and passe, the LGBTQ community saw the beauty and joy in their music and revitalized it.
Tacoma98 Australia NEVER thought Abba was passe (not the lgbtq+ not the straight community) In Australia Abba is religion - hahaha!
Straight people never really knew how to have fun
BS.
Tacoma98 I’m calling it like it is...STRAIGHT UP BS! I have Loved ABBA since I was 11 years old and definitely when the Songs were not in just English. What a ridiculous comment...Wow
It _is_ cheesy and passé and always was even in the '70s (and I'm gay, so there!)

I loved their Fernando scene!❤
They both superb in Mamma Mia 2 !!
from that interview, you can kind of feel Cher is just not that into Andy Garcia...
SOLODOG63 thought that was just me.
SOLODOG63 He's probably not into sluts either!!!! LOL
She's not into those publicity stunt as she's no fuck left 2 give.
SOLODOG63 i was thinking that. Cher talented but the lack of chemistry 😢

They were closer now Fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally

We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
Now we're old and grey Fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums Fernando
Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the Rio Grande
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, Fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, Fernando
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, Fernando
They were shining there for you and me

I am Norwegian (almost the same as Swedish), and don't understand what she means with "not English". Could someone explain?
Pretty sure Cher is talking about the flow of the words, it is english but the structure is backward to how it would be spoken in conversation.
Do you have an example? I still don't get it :)
Cher does not look anything like 72!,,
Planner Cookie Mama no, she had had no plastic surgery, her grandma has great skin and it runs in her family.

damn lol
Cher and Andy look like they're waiting to meet an undertaker - the interviewer has all the charisma of a cheese sandwich (sans pickle)
Laurence von Winkenburger wow what happened to his voice must have been a big smoker or drinker
Laurence von Winkenburger why do you say that Laurence, my pen friend? It was a good few years after the christening we had to call the undertaker???
Cher. You are the best
It's a pity, that the songs haven't been such popular in America at their era in 70's/beginning 80's, rather becoming later.
I dont know about other people but I have been lissening to Abba sence the 70s and now at 62 still love them .I live in the U.S.
Andy's having a great Daddy year between this and Book Club.
what a beautiful interview!!
what did cher mean, by saying that the songs are not written in proper english and things are turned upside down? has it to do with the grammar Abba used?
ABBA - supersong`s and supersinger`s
Okay but what Cher said about learning the song Fernando is so true because you can try and guess what word will come next in certain parts of the song or how they are said but you won’t be correct most of the time. Trust me I know from experience😂
Why is that guy wearing his pajamas to interview Cher and Andy Garcia?
I died😂😂😂
i cant wait until cher,s cd
WOULD LOOOVE, IF CHER WOULD BE INVITED TO SING ALONG AGNETHA AND ANNI-FRID, ON A NEW ABBA SONG!!! I'D LOOOVE TO HEAR THAT😘😍🥰
What does she mean Fernando is not in English? Did ABBA write the song in Swedish?
What "is not English" in the lyrics ??
I have had a crush on Andy for a long time.
I think I know why the gay community likeabba cher Donna Summer Liza Minnelli Judy Garland is because we are fussy we only like the best it's simple as that
summerholliday44.
No..is not simple but danged if III get why. Because they're more flamboyantly female and easier to copy?
Because they're bigger than life and dramatic, imo. Literally drama queens.
I think also..they are bold..flamboyant and a bit masculine...while feminine......and of course..the "IT" factor......
I'm 10 years old and I love both mamma mia movies
Andy Garcia
Cher you are the best my Facebook page you're more like my mom says but I appreciate you
Do I have ears problem ? I hear the song Fernando sounds English but Cher says it's not English.
Andy Garcia knows how to kiss a woman! Awwwww, to be kissed like that.
Colin & Andy ❤❤❤
Hey kid. Put on a bloody jacket. It's Cher!
I have seen Cher video a couple times and I finally recognize that Cher's voice sounds young. Are they speaking English by any other reasons ? I feel English and they say I am wrong.
What does she mean “it’s not English”? I’m confused.
love cher abba keep on rocking
I hate how everything is being appropriated by the LGBTQ community. Look people, music doesn’t have sex, doesn’t have color, doesn’t have orientation. ABBA’s music still resonates because of their genius, their cheesiness, their catchiness, and their sheer beauty and rock and roll style (Watch Out, Hey Hey Helen, Hole in Your Soul). Coming from a man who likes men.
Here here!! Fellow gay man whose sick of the LGBTQI-ALPHABET SOUP movement
I was looking at sketchbooks in target and there was a woman in the same isle that sound EXACTLY like Cher lol.
😂😂😂
Im thinking Oscar.....
Is Cher Homophobic because she didn't really answer the question and Andy did. She just went on to say that it wasn't written in English and stuff, idk.
love and respect. you cant have love without respect.
Cher says that Fernando was a difficult song to sing because its not English?.....WHAT???????
perth45 She was saying how English was ABBA’s second language and you can tell that from how they construct their songs.
Fernando is about two Mexican revolutionaries during the US-Mexican War. It has nothing to do with "celebration of all forms of love". Please!
It's actually about the 1910 Mexican Revolution. The original Swedish version was more about reminiscing over a lost love. But I highly doubt Andy knew about that,
Shady Cher. "It's not even in English!"
originally written in Swedish, I believe.
Lovely Fernando I like
so good the movie
What the hell does she mean it's not English? Has anyone heard it in any other language?
well yes as a matter of fact it was originally done in swedish for frida's 1976 solo album. she does another superb job of it.
but i must admit, i was a bit stunned with that comment from her too ...
any one else understand what she was trying to say?
love and peace to you and all,
xxxxxxx
Great outfit Cher!
What does she mean with Fernando isn’t english? It is?
Tobias Hørsted
"Fernando" was originally in Swedish released a year earlier by Ana-Frid Lyngstad on her solo album. ua-cam.com/video/Ys4lyJiqG8E/v-deo.html
RaymondHng I know but there has been en english version for decades
Tobias Hørsted I think Cher meant that the English translation was difficult to understand. Some of the phrasing in ABBAs lyrics are charmingly awkward.
"Charmingly awkward"
I loved this movie!! SPOILER -->
Except for the fact Donna died. I would’ve loved to see Meryl more!
I from LGBT myself, but I didnt understand what LGBT thing have to do with a question about abba. they shove LGBT
issue all over everywhere now, and it's like getting on my nerves as fck
2:09 😂
Love it xx
Pretty sure you were singing in English Cher...
You wouldn't understand what she's talking about honey, the song is English yes but it was written by foreign songwriters Benny and Bjorn in other words the construction of the songs they write are very different from what American singers and songwriters are use to. Cher being an artist and songwriter herself can identify those things better than we can, to us it's just a song with English words but she can dig a little deeper and tell u some interesting stuff about music having been in the industry over 50 years
I even love more my name now... 😉
Cher is 72 and looks like in her late ‘40s. That’s a masterpiece of surgery!!!!!
from that interview, you can kind of feel Cher is just not that into Andy Garcia...
You could see Cher wanted to tell Garcia to clear his fcking throat ... "Like spit it up and get it out dude!".
Since when?
Why did he shave his beard?!
I loved that song in the movie!!!! So great 😍
It is because ABBA songs are fun.
