    Great information but you have the oil screen backwards! The rubber gasket goes out then a metal washer then spring then bolt cover. I had to call the dealer since it wouldn't go in like you showed they said skinny part of screen goes in 1st! Thanks for the video though!

  • @spelunkerd
    @spelunkerd 7 років тому +1

    One other thing worth noting is an apparent change that Kawasaki made to which way that screen goes in. In my 95 VN800, the screen goes in the opposite way, with the flange on the outside, closer to the bolt you undo to get it out. I did the first ever oil change on that bike. The screen came out by slipping my finger in the hole, and the screen pulled out like a glove on my finger. I bought the OEM '95 dealers repair manual when I bought the bike, and the exploded diagram on page 6-2 clearly shows my orientation. Also the photo on page 6-6 is consistent with the way my screen was oriented, backwards compared to the way you show it. I bring this up because a few viewers who watched my Kawasaki oil change video noticed that my screen was backwards, compared to the way theirs was oriented. I can only conclude that either Kawasaki changed their orientation or those guys had it wrong. It seems unlikely that Kawasaki had it wrong in the factory manual. All that said, I'm not sure it even makes a difference! Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the screen should catch debris either way. I've never had that engine apart so I can't say how it matches up inside the engine. If you know of any TSB's regarding this issue, please let us know.

    That is a great drain for the oil. I use the large aerosol with brake cleaner for wiping its dirt off. The opening is threaded in multiple ways on the 1500 Classic of mine. So one can only screw the large cap back on with a lot of patience and push/pull action at the right moment. It is really not so easy on a hot day. The screen can only fit, back in, one way because you would push it being reversed.

    In 40K miles I think I've had the screen out of my '05 1600 three or four times, and found a few little bits of metal each time. I don't see as it would be a problem only taking it out every 10K miles (three or more oil changes), because there is a ton of screen surface on the longer one shown here. Furthermore, removing and re-installing it too often is more likely to cause problems than just leaving it in for another 5K miles.
    I worked on musical instruments for 35 years, and very often the worst problems were the ones caused by "technicians" trying to "fix" things when they shouldn't have been messing with them due to their ignorance and stupidity. Damages caused by the user were often less serious than the horrible things that the "technicians" were doing. It's just a fact of life. I think any experienced, decent technician, in any field, will tell you the same thing.

    Great vid. Recently did my oil and, like you said, I saw the screen bolt, and that’s what I used to drain the oil. PITA!!! Well, when I got to the end of dumping my oil, after everything was back together and running, I found the O-ring, at the bottom. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️No screen or spring. I’m assuming it’s still in there. Guess I’ll have to empty it and put the O-ring back on. It’s not leaking, however.

      @@How2Wrench follow up…. I put the O-ring back on, but there wasn’t any screen. Just a spring. Seems to be the shorter spring, by looking at pictures. Looks like the pictures show the longer screen, but some show a shorter spring, some the longer spring. What is correct for a 2009 900 Vulcan? Tia

    I have a very puzzling problem with my bike. Only 16 000 km, bought new, always state of the art tuned and maintained . I drive it with care and never push it to its limits. I'm the only driver and noboby else has access to that bike. That bike always give a great service and satisfaction until 2 weeks ago, as I noticed that the engine oil was low. I always used Motul 4w40 Synthetic oil. So I filled up back until the oil level was full and went back on the road. After only 65 km, I checked back the engine oil level and the oil level had dropped to the half. Thinking the oil filter could be in trouble and making the engine oil pressure to open the oil pressure relief valve causing oil to be burned, I changed the oil and the oil filter. I filled back the engine with the requested 4.6 L of Motul 4w40 Synthetic. One hour later in the garage, while the engine did'nt run, at my surprise, the oil level was less than the milldle of the oil stick. I filled up back, adding 1 more liter of oil. I runned the engine for a couple of minuts to be sure that the new OEM oil filter would be full. Then I went home to sleep. The next morning, I went to the garage and once again the engine oil level was a bit over the minimum. I added again oil. Now I filled up my bike with a total of 6 liters of engine oil even the user manuel and the service manual say that it takes not more that 5.1 Liters when the engine is completly dry. That bike don't leak, never leaked and doesn't smokes when I drove it for testing in order to discover why that engine oils is disappearing. Where that oil can go into the engine, if it is not burned, it doesn't go on the ground ? Does somebody from you have a clue to help me. Thank you very much. It's a 2013 Nomad 1700 cc. I would appreciate any idea that could help solve this puzzling mechanical situation.

    According to the Kawasaki Owner's Manual for Vulcan 900 it is not required to check and clean this screen during regular maintenance. I understand this screen will catch the big stuff and the oil filter all remaining fine particles. Wouldn't it be an overkill to clean it with every oil change?

    • @ManicMotoAZ
      @ManicMotoAZ 5 років тому +1

      Yes 100% overkill. I own a shop and we check them every time a new customer brings in there Vulcan just because half the time they aren't sure when the last time they checked it was or they have NEVER checked it, so we just want to be sure that there is nothing to worry about. But 90% of the time there is nothing on it and when there is it is very little and still plenty of oil flow through the screen.
      So I suggest you check it once, just to get a baseline on the bike then check it every 2-3 oil changes. I find it much more important to use a high end oil and filter and be vigilant about changing every 3k miles.

    i need to change my coolant on a 2001 kawasaki vulcan nomad 1500fi can you tell me how to go about it ?? how to bleed it and how to drain ? do i have to remove the tank?? , any help ? thanks, Jeff

    • @AlfredMoi
      @AlfredMoi 6 років тому +2

      Sorry this is late.
      On most of these bikes the radiator cap will be on front and made accessible by removing the instrument panel and speedometer from the tank. Use plenty of towels against making scratches. Then you can just lay it aside.
      The pump, next to the cap, must be bled and on the side of the engine, behind the right cover there is another nipple to extract air. Perhaps yoy should download a service manual. I could drain at the bottom of the radiator, never pull the hose off you don't want trouble with one of these.
      Pay attention to the excellent in specifications, cheap and longer lasting Honda "Type 2" coolant, in both concentrated and 50 percent ready to use dilution. This has other metal protectors then silicates and that is a whole lot better for seals and water pumps. On some motorbikes it is a pain when the water pump wears out. The thermostat under the opening can dissolve and malfunction in opened position if not break into pieces. This is because its metal is an alloy. Always shine some light down the opening for inspection. I suggest you flush with demi water and compensate what water is left in the engine with Type 2 concentrated.
      Take your time filling up because the thermostat ring will be closed. What I always noticed is the old coolant making the whole bike wet so you want to cover the engine side and front wheel with plastic. Used engine oil is airborne in the breeze.

      Sounds possible but not sure if you'd get all the oil out as it's higher than the drain. Best to ask Shane directly. He is in Japan right now but still answering member questions.

      The VN 900 is different, filter is in the front, screen slightly different position.
      Just remove the left bolt from the rectifier bar, and you can reach the filter.

    are all vulcans the same? I have a 2004 VN2000, I love the bike, but I still can't figure out how to check my oil. Theres no dip stick, I have heard of an oil viewer on the bottom of the bike which I can't seem to find!! I want to change the oil but figure I better figure out how to check the amount the engine needs, before I start. I've done all my oil changes and maintenance on most of my vehicles, I'm no stranger to the process of working on engines. I see the three nuts I must remove to drain oil, and now maybe this screen, and the oil filter. Please help, how do I check the oil level!!

      I have a vn 2000. Change oil many times. It takes 5.8 qrt of oil with filter replacment. The dip stick is next to the upper exhaust pipe next to were you check and add antifreeze. Two drain plugs. The nature of the motor of this bike will always consumed a little oil even after break in. And the oil gets dirtier quicker did any other bike motor!! To check and drain all the oil the bike must sit straight up and down. Not so easy!!. I cut a piece of wood for under my kickstand so the bike will sit up straight up and down it's a balancing act..i lock my handlebars then tie a rope or use a ratchet strap Between the Bars and something solid so it won't fall over.. Add oil were the dipstick is. The dipstick is polished chrome it hard to break loose I take a rag place over it then use in adjustable wrench. I learned to check my oil while I'm sitting on the bike so I can keep it upright. Warm up the bike and let it set at least 10 minutes so all the oil can drain back down from that big motor before checking it. Kawasaki had to come out with a claimer and disclaimer to all owners of the vn2000. They had to reprint new instructions on how to change and check oil because the original confused people.. people were adding too much oil, I did this a couple times myself.. the multi-disc clutch sits in this oil and that's another reason why you keep the oil clean. only use motorcycle oil unlike a few of my moron Friends or your clutch will do nothing but slip..changing six quarts of oil on a bike that sit low and weighs almost 900 pounds isn't the easiest thing there is to do but I hope this helps.

    I just got a 2000 kawasaki vulcan classic 1500 this winter. I did oil change before I brought it out and changed the rear-end oil as well. I found a few bits of metal in there along with what looked like maybe some pine needles who knows. I don't know who had the bike so I don't know anything that was done or not done. My girl and I road up to Baldwin Michigan for Blessing of the bikes last weekend. That was around 300 to 350 miles round trip plus riding around well we was up there I had to of done over 1000 miles since getting in league so I decided to do a fluid change starting with the oil this time the oil screen wasn't bad I did fine a couple fine pieces of metal nothing like last oils change. Is it normal to have any metal it this screen between oil changes like this ? Other then the pieces the oil doesn't seem to have any metal shin I'm going screen it off and see if there anything else the drain pan is brand new so I will know forsure.

      @@How2Wrench my oil light goes off when I rev it but once the rpm’s go back down the light comes back on. Thank you so much, I’m in desperate need of help, it’s a beautiful bike but I have little to no experience and don’t wanna wreck it

      Sounds like the plastic oil pump gear is starting to fail; not an uncommon problem for 96-99 Vulcan 1500's (except the 99 Drifter - it has a steel gear). The gear is located on the right side of the block partially covered by the clutch basket. Search by Vulcan 1500 POG

      Dang that was 3 or 4 years ago and for the life of me I can't if it was a 800 or 1500...He was a big guy and I feel it was a 1500. If you are looking for if your bike has it, watch this video on how to determine: ua-cam.com/video/8meAUeC_ciw/v-deo.html
