wonderful video. Yours is the first I found that actually shows what to do with the caping before your first peice of vent. Good job.
Thank you. I am watching these videos because I have to hire a roofer and want to understand the process without a sales pitch. This video was clear and matched with what some of the salesmen were telling me. I now know what questions to ask and what to watch out for. You have a calm and clear way of presenting and explaining. I bet you are a great teacher.
hire a roofer lol not a sales company ifthe sub work dont use them
Cue the birds singing! Cue the neighbor dog barking! Roofing is good for the soul. You articulate the process with amazing clarity. Thank you, this was worth watching.
Great video! Thank you for sharing the series. These were very helpful. I was able to roof my new shed after watching these.
That's great to hear. Always like knowing when we help someone with their project. Thank you for watching and commenting. Please come back to our channel for more How To and Product Review videos. Have a great day!
I love that the nails for the ridge cap are slipped right on the sides of the ridge vent. Handy!!!
Nice job, the drip edge overhangs are perfect.
Starter cap is missing. This system of capping is a 4-ply system. The first cap on the house is only two ply. There should be a double half-cap(two caps together with their exposures cut off, leaving the adhesive intact, facing rakeside) installed first before you install your first course of cap. And, you should make sure that your final cap also has 4 plys as well.
Great video. Im doing this on an 8X16 storage shed.
Great question! wish i would have covered it in the vid. On the last shingle, after its nailed down. Trim so theres about a half to 3/4 of and inch hanging past the ridge vent. you can dab just a little roofing tar over the nail heads and call it finished or what I like to do is cut another shingle tab to fit over the exposed nail heads and then use the tar generously to attach that last shingle. It looks better and there are no exposed nail heads. Hope this helps. take care!
Leave it to us good ol boys to show the proper way to do roofing. Nice job.
Thank you very much friend! Glad it was helpful. take care and have a great day!
Great video and instructions,
thank you,
Harry
awesome video, this helped me a lot! thank you
Very nice and professionally done
Awesome video and nice works! Thanks
This is the way ya do it ! Thank you sir ...............
Great job on the video! Been the best one I've seen so far on ridge vents! :)
Jeff Lever Thank you Jeff. We appreciate you watching and commenting. Have a great day.
Once again, a very good video. I learned something.
Great instructions. I learned a lot from this video.
Thank you! Glad the video was helpful. Have a great day
Very helpful - thanks!
I cap from both ends toward the middle with the shingles turned away from the gables. That way water sheds away from the roof ends of the roof vent. At the gables, I lay a half starter with the sticky strip toward the outside and then nail the cut off aggregate half on top of it, dabbing the nail heads neatly with some roof cement sprinkled with loose aggregate to hide them. This eliminates the need to decide which is the windward gable. The middle gets another half shingle nailed, dabbed and sprinkled. It's a little extra work but it functions better so I put up with it.
Thank you! Yes, I will make another video on capping and I will explain the other end of the roof in detail. Take care
great video
My roof is being done next week with Malarkey Legacy XL shingles. They’re filling in the square vents and installing a ridge vent. I did a lot of research before ordering my shingles and ridge vents.... I hope they lay it down as straight as your crew did.
Great video thanks!!
good video i was wondering about the subject and this one was the more detailed, unfortunately no answers for the related good questions...
When we got our new roof put on I looked around the attic and freaked out when I saw big gaps at the very top because I didn't know about ridge vents so I thought they had cut the plywood sheets too short :D
Thank you!
Nice video....
Thank you...
Good job my friend. May our Lord bless you and your family.
Thank you Daniel and same to you. We appreciate you watching and commenting. Please come back to our channel for more How To videos. Have a great day!
Hey... this is all well and good for somebody already knows how to do it but you did not show how you do the end how do you make the end of the ridge vent row all color and no nail showing
Nice
Your welcome and thank you for the nice comment!
good job

This is a great video. I am installing shingles and a ridge vent on a shed and this helped a lot. Thanks. Why did you NOT run the vent to the end of the roof? Why leave the 14 inches?
when you cap the vent do you pre drill nail holes in the shingle????
I thought you were supposed to use a fiberglass mesh across the hole before the ridge vent to prevent bugs from coming in the attic?
Great video. I have a question for you. I have a cathedral ceiling over the room which is over my garage. I have a large beam and 2x12 rafters. I'm looking to have a ridge vent installed. What is the typical cost to have that done? Also, do I need to drill holes in the top of beam in order for air to flow from the soffit up through the cavity and thru the ridge vent?
Your welcome! Thank you for the comment!
Nice work, great information. Thank you.
Great video. Very helpful. One question. What do you do at the other end of the ridge vent as far as shingling goes? Would the last shingle hang over the vent a half inch and then put roofing cement on the exposed nail heads? Thanks!
Smart man! You hand nail the cap. I've seen others use 1 inch and a quarter with the nail gun. this is unacceptable and the lazy way to put on cap!
Thanks! Appreciate you watching and commenting. Please come back to our channel for more How To videos. Have a great day!
where the shingles meet up with the opening (ridge vent) are those shingles cut smaller or are they a special shingle?...i'm attempting my first roof
Great instructions! Question... is it normal to see some moisture on the ridge vent cap from the inside the attic when it rains really hard?
How did you finish the ridge single on the ridge vent. And I am hearing they clog and some leak. Your comments on this please.
Good video
Greg Lilly Thank you Greg!
On the nails securing the ridge cap shingles to the ridge cap, what size are they? Are they actually penetrating the shingles/sheathing underneath the ridge cap? I had a couple ridge cap shingles blow off during a recent storm (Gaf Cobra ridge vent) and want to secure the new ridge cap shingles correctly.
Nice video, do you not have to put any sealant under the vents when putting them down?
Being in Florida dealing with Irma, I only had two ridge shingles split. But upon inspecting my 3 yr old roof...those nails that were wedged in the slots of the ridge vent that you plucked out..are still there! And I do not see nails in any of the cap shingles, just adhesive. I have a GAF lifetime and they will come out in few weeks. Isnt it mandatory to nail those caps on?
Thanks. I have a problem with several leaks along my ridge vent and I need to know how it should be done properly. I'll BET they used a nail gun for the whole thing.
Great video ! You showed how to start it but did not show how to finish it so that the last set you put on don't leave the nails exposed. Do you just put some roofing cement on it?
I would like to know the same thing.
great video but I was curious how you finish off the other side? Like to you have exposed nails on one side or do you do something else to finish off the other side?
and1chewy ..you will have 2 exposed nails that should be tarred
I like the concept but does that ever leak
thank you.i learned from this.nice video
i always install the vent across the entire ridge because it just looks better.
That's also what the instructions state.
That is what the manufacture instructions say to do, Certain Teed. And cut vent in roof ridge within 6" of the end.
So you don’t have to have an inch of shingle overlapping the ridge vent? When it snows, won’t it create moister in your roof? I am in the understanding that a you put a shingle long enough to be an inch or so over top of ridge vent. What’s your thoughts? Thanks for taking the time.
Materials shouldn't be to much if your gonna do it yourself. 4 ft sections of ridgevent are approx. $7 each. A bundle of 3 tabs will cap about 33 ft. There are about $25 each. A capping shingle is a better choice and they run about $50 a bundle and usually cap about 20 ft depending on the brand. Yes you will have to cut the plywood back on each side of the ridgepoll to allow proper ventilation. The ridgevent should have info on it as to how far to cut out the ridge. Take care
In florida termites . and ants and like insects can get past the vent openings. Perhaps and quality mosquito screen at the ridge opening.
Are ridge vents the best for a cool attic ??????
great video...who is lone wolf?
The most satisfying part of shingling is folding the shingle so it tears in half
I have a question/concern.
Would water leak inside in a windy rainy day? Thanks in advance..
Its possible under a severe rain storm but the modern ridgevent is designed to prevent that problem. The old aluminum vent they use to sell sometimes would get a little water past it. I've removed that style vent before and noticed some water damage at the peak.
Great video. Do you lay the shingles the same way on the other end? As in the same direction with a starter cap on the gable end and lay them in towards the ridge vent? I would assume so, but would it give the roof an odd look with the shingles running in different directions? Maybe I am overthinking this. Are architectural ridge cap shingles installed essentially the same way? And can ridge vent be installed on the dimensional part of the shingle or do you have to ensure the ridge vent be installed on the flat upper side of the shingle? Thanks in advance.
If your roof ust has two sides to it and no valleys, some roofers will run capping coming from both sides till they meet the middle of the roof. This is more so done when you have high profile capping installed
How well does that plastic age? What will that look like in ten years?
sweetbeef what if you dont have any vents in your roof what will happen?
I am looking for aftermarket blades for my mahindra emax25m-2514 60 inch mower deck model AEMAHME60. blade oem part number AME050008. 21 INCH BLADES WITH A 5/8 INCH CENTER HOLE
Thanks for the video.
One question. What is the size of the opening that you cut your roof?
My ridge vent was installed several years ago and I think I have no more that 1.5 inches. Would this be enough? Thanks
That sounds about right. if you cut it any more than that, the nails for the cap wouldnt have any plywood to bite into
@@Josh-ww5kz thanks Josh.
How do you finish at the other end?
silentmajor hire a roofer lol
Imo, I think it looks better running the ridge vent all the way to the end. You can still start the cut-out in the ridge 6 inches or more in
Should the roof not have ridge ventilation.
I had a roofer install a complete roof replacement with vented roof cap but the cap shingles didn't cover the vented cap. About 1 " of plastic vent is longer on both sides than the cap shingles. Is that going to be a issues as it ages, such as UV rays destroying the vent or linking?
The caps arent supposed to cover the entire ridge venting, should have about an inch or so from the edge all the way across the ridge. Just gives it more airflow. unless you can see nails or into your attic space when looking straight up and down through the venting, it shouldnt be a problem
I'm in Illinois and just had my roof replaced due to hail damage along with removal of the standard vents in favor of this ridge vent upgrade system and after looking at the design on a few you tube videos, I can honestly say I am regretting it now. With enough wind, rain and snow, this system appears to be able to allow for a high probability of moisture to enter the attic. Something I never seemed to have to worry about with tradional metal vents.
muy buen video sobre los techos de papel granito, solo les falta ponerlos en español por favor muchas gracias.Nuevo Laredo Tamp.
Is that for the viewers who are doing roofs in Mexico? Maybe he could also do it in French for people doing roofs in Quebec, Canada.
Gracias.
Never use Cobra Rolled Ridge Vent is doesn't ventilate properly and let's the rain come in. Use a externally baffled ridge vent always. Always run the ridge vent material to the end of the house even though you don't cut to the end. This makes it look like a chicken coop. Congrats though--he is the only roofer besides us to hand nail with LONG ROOFING NAILS. The longest gun roofing nails just do not cut the mustard.
Stop hating. Where's your roofing videos 🤔
Charles is mad because he hired inexperienced roofers and ripped him off but blames the product lol
Charles is telling you to use the product in the video, not the ineffective rolled venting. He is offering solid advice that is in line with what the video is saying. He is also clearly a roofer so these comments of him being a "Hater" or hiring "Inexperienced Roofers" make little sense. All up votes and no down votes attest to this. Jorge and Annunaki, you should delete your comments, they make you look like idiots.
100% agree Charles! The product he's nailing through in an inch thick, plus he's nailing through two top shingles, plus (in the case of my roof) I had another inch of shingles before I even got to the roof actual decking! And that deck wasn't even the highest quality anyway! So even using 3 inch roofing nails, I still had to come back and replace a couple with deck screws and some wood glue because they had pulled out overnight.
However, +naccibobacci, you should know by now that the downvote button on UA-cam doesn't work anymore. It actually hasn't worked in awhile, at least not for comments. You can upvote or downvote a video, but that is primarily how YT knows if you want to see more of something or not.
@@Hypercube9 .
just a comment on these plastic ridge vents. Some come lined with a plastic scrub pad looking thing. Which is GOOD if you live in an area like the northeast where stink bugs like to find a way to get into your hours. Without the plastic as a little barrier to keep the bugs out, but lets the air escape from your attic. I've seen the grills on some ridge vents with out the plastic scrub pad inside is filled with stink bugs that die there and no air can get out.
Double cap is not acceptable, because top tab is not properly glue,u will have to apply sealant or plastic cement on each tab,in order to keep tabs for blowing away
Absolutely right!
I have a video just on that topic but I should be able to explain. You want to run your shingles up both sides of the roof all the way. place your ridgevent over the top. If your not covering the nail heads on the last shingle you nailed on then you will have to run another row of shingles. At the peak you will have unnecessary shingle material hanging over. you will need to trim all this back with a hook knife in the areas in which your gonna install ridgevent.
Question - What's to keep bugs (Wasps, bees, roaches, etc.) from getting in on the ends of the ridge cap? Is there a screen there or anything as a barrier? I have not been to the lumber yard to look at these ridge caps yet.
Yes, the ends are not open and some brands have screen or a piece of mesh to prevent bugs from entering. Have a great day!
Thanks! I finally did get around to go to Lowes and looking at this item and I see what you mean now.
How do you end the capping on the ridge and ridge vent?
Thats what would like to know, how to finish the run on the other end of the cap
+Robert Wager Did you find out the answer? I need to know?
Nope, just leaving the last two nails exposed seems wrong, but...
+Robert Wager u have to do half of the house then u start from the other side of the house and u meet in the middle and u cut the tab just where the color of the tab is and put it where both sides meet. put your nails one in each corner and then coulk it
I'll agree with most of you, with one change: Nail down the bottom shingle, then layer & glue the decorative top shingle. That way even if the glue comes off, you still have a layer of protection on top of your ridge vent.
size of nails??
Do roofers ever READ THE INSTRUCTIONS? The manufacturer SPECIFICALLY INSTRUCTS DO NOT FASTEN ON THE TAR STRIP. The manufacturer specifically instructs TWO FASTENERS PER SIDE.
my son just bought a house and I noticed the roof cap only covers part of the roof. if 30 ft, 10 is capleted, 10 in center is capped then last 10 is not. all in this neighborhood are done this way. for what reason is it not complete? It is Texas, I suspect they only did minimum regulations.
Rae Boyd the ventilation is also calculated by sq for are to be ventilated, probably they only needed that amount of ventilation to ventilate the roof as needed. You can watch videos to learn how to calculate the ventilation needed for your specific roof, your answer probably is there.
hopefully your still checking comments on this video...i have the exact same setup except i did single tab just finished yesterday. i however on the ridge cap did not place my nails on the tar line. i went a little further back. should be okay right?
also if anyone is wondering the nails that come with this ridge cap do not come with enough to do the vent and tabs. if you were to fill all holes in the ridge that is
Actually if you read the manufacturer's warranty and installation information, it states that you should never nail on the tar line as the nail head prevents the tar from adhering to the shingle above it. Some manufacturers actually place a nail line on each shingle to eliminate confusion.
@@hen436 I havent had a problem with that sort of thing with supervisors, etc. A nail head thats smaller than a penny isnt going to cover much of any of the tar line, to the point where it doesnt stick down.
Hey i have a question a company just finished doing our roof but they didn't put shingles on all the vents is this normal or they have to put them and cover the entire vent.
they skimped on ya........it should be covered.
SpockMcoy Issmart they came back and finish it the next day didn't told me that they were going to be back. Thanks for the info.
glad to hear it.
Get you a better hammer brother lol
there is a faster way
This application would fail an inspection to the point of complete removal and replacement.
Taylor Hecht is best if you can explain why it will fail, so people like us who are not roofers know what was the mistake or mistakes.
lol dont need to cut that. Just bend it twice and done. Way faster.
faster is not always a better quality of work
Does the neighbor’s dog ever shut up? 😬
Nailed WAY TOO HIGH!!
that aint holding worth a krap. i would use screws,, i will they are bought n paidfor
Trust me, it will hold. its practically 4 nails in one cap. using screws would be overkill and would made a reroof in the future annoying and the roofers would get sick of it
Do not cut your own ridge cap, doing so voids the warranty
Ridge vents suck. If you want bats, squirrels, bugs, and any other critter in your attic, just install these.
