That is an amazing call back to have the original TV Barry Allen play the father of the current. Just like when the tried to do a reboot/continuation/re-imagining of the the Thundercats and they got the voice actor of the original Lion-o,Larry Kenney, to voice the father of the new Lion-o.

I fell in love with comics due to Francis Manapul's run on the Flash. "Dastardly Death of The Rogues" is one of my favorite stories in any media, and the art in his New 52 run is breathtakingly beautiful, with writing that's just as good

      Mario Mentasti Thanks!
Any specific Rider requests? If we were to do solo episodes (and I'm not saying we will), we wouldn't go in order. That'd be dozens of episodes and there are whole other franchises to cover.

one of my favorite Flash (Barry) stories is Flash:Rebirth. I liked the Wally West version in JL/JLU cartoon series. the Flash centered episode in JLU was really cool and I loved how they brought back Mark Hamill to voice the Trickster. i hadn't realy seen too much of Green arrow outside of his appearance in JLU. Recently though I've been reading stuff that has featured him in a supporting role. Kingdom Come, TDKR, The Nail ( recommend these one to any and everyone) . Also check out the Green Arrow short. Really fun adventure that captures the green arrow vibe. Wildcat is one of those characters who I would love to have appear in EVERYTHING. His portrayal in JLU was fantastic in my opinion. Roy Harper's portrayal in the comics breaks my heart sometimes and he was used excellently in Young Justice. Deathstroke is always awesome and I may have thing for fishnets now. lolz I really enjoy the Arrow tv series and am looking forward to the Flash and his rogues.

I think this episode convinced me to check it out. I forget why I didn't watch season 1, but last season I chose Agents of SHIELD over it. But with SHIELD at 9 this fall? I might make room

Preface: I studied in creative writing and took some cinema classes so I tend to be overly critical.
Arrow isn't bad per say but don't expect the quality of writing/character development that Shield had. Even if Joss wasn't the main writer it still has his stamp all over it. I had some trouble with Arrow at first because it felt so melodramatic... Actually I often describe it as Batman Begins made by the producers of Melrose place. The Superhero stuff is fine, the show has some of the best combat sequence you'll get on TV but the need to have every character related to the main character by either blood, sex or absence of sex was getting on my nerves at some point. But if this doesn't bother you (or if you are a "shipper") and if you don't mind some obvious stupid writing only to get characters in certain situations then the show might work very well because as I said, I like the show overall despite the fact that these things tend to either bore me or make me mad at the writers.

Jean-Francois Charbonneau Yeah, I think Agents of SHIELD only really had worthwhile character development during/after the Winter Soldier tie-in, so I have to disagree. The dialogue work on SHIELD is sharper/snappier, but it feels soulless until that turn in the show (i.e. no longer wheel-spinning).
Arrow seems really willing to turn away from dead ends as it more organically develops while SHIELD is stuck in a larger, corporate framework. Yes, there are a big helping of classic CW-style trappings, but I think that meshes just fine with the less-than-grown-up tone of actual comic books.
Also, the ultra-connected thing is absolutely a factor in SHIELD. If you're OK hearing "Extremis" every 15 seconds, you'll be OK with noted playboy Ollie Queen getting some action on the regular (as is in-character for Ollie Queen).
Post-note: I primarily studied TV writing while working on my bachelor's in film/TV. I've only ever torn people's scripts a new one in critique.

My favourite stories with the Justice Society characters would be The Golden Age and the Starman series both written by James Robinson. Arrow is probably the best tv drama series adapted from comics. It is not afraid to reference DC comics characters and history and it has a compelling backstory that the series uses to advance the story. It is obvious the producers have planned out the storyline and have an affection for the comic book characters.

    • @GeekCrashCourse
      @GeekCrashCourse  10 років тому

Mathew Guglielmi Golden Age and Starman are some of my favorite comics, so definitely agreed there.
I also sort of think the show got a giant retool between seasons from the "original" plan, whatever that was. Grim-and-gritty can work in movies, but TV needs some occasional levity (necessitating the later, much-liked tweaks to the show).

Hi there! Good episode again and as I said before, thanks for keeping your shows on the positive side, it's always refreshing to see this on the overly negative internet. For my money Arrow isn't great but it's good. I like to describe it as Batman Begins meet Melrose place and while I'm not a fan of the need to have everybody related by either blood, sex or absence of sex to the main character (Diggle excluded) I was able to overlook this and appreciate the show anyway. It has some of the best fights I've seen on TV.
(SPOILER ALERT FOR THE PARAGRAPH) The fight with Nyssa was awesome, some of the team ups with Canary were really fun and well done and even the less flashy ones were still well done in my opinion. I was really disappointed in the finale but that's my fault. I always warn people not to think in advance what they think a show should be (ex: people who wanted Agents of Shield to be full of superheroes despite the name saying exactly what we would have... and Marvel always being very honest with it's titles) But I expected more fights within a war as an ending. Like Arrow vs Slade that we got but also Roy vs Grundy (both powered up), Diggle vs Blood and Lady deathstroke vs Black Canary. That was actually the fight I was most looking for because I've seen Summer Glau in Serenity and I've watched Caity Lotz in the show... man was a waste it was to get rid of Summer in that way...
Oh and about Flash I've seen the episode too... although they called it a trailer but let's be realistic here... that's the pilot in 5 minutes. The rest will provide more exposition but we've seen what will be the episode in the end.
In any case, I don't know if you plan on doing a Marvel agents of Shield GCC or not but if not I'd be interested in discussing it/getting your opinion.
Thanks again for the great shows and take care.

Thanks for watching, for complimenting, and for the really great discussion in your comment!
I wasn't really an Agents of SHIELD fan until "Turn, Turn, Turn," which is basically the series finally breaking out of their movie-enforced holding pattern IMHO. That said, there's a really incredible ramping-up in those last few episodes that's given me a hell of a lot of hope about the future of the property.
We're not planning an episode on SHIELD currently, so you know. We were a bit Marvel TV heavy in the front half of the year with our Netflix heroes stuff, so I'm trying to balance out the schedule a bit. I also tend to like shows to get two years deep, so there's a broader context to discuss about an overall property.
I go into some more Arrow thoughts in my other reply, so I'll spare you repeat information here. -Michael

Geek Crash Course I'll answer here only as it's not really necessary to double post really. I'll also do my best to keep it from being very long but I'll fail. I write a lot... and obviously twitter was never meant for me...
The show was stuck in a situation where they couldn't do much more than tease a reveal but wait until Cap 2 and that made the show have a weird slow pace and I'll admit this isn't for everyone. But I personally like when a show put pieces in place early and takes it's time. For example, Skye being an 084 is kinda hinted at in the first episode when Coulson mentions "We don't know anything about her" and the same words are used in the second episode 084s are described using pretty much the same words "It means we don't know what it is". Ward past has also been a slow burn and with obvious reasons but the way they approached it was in my opinion near genius. Very little was said and we were never lied to but the show (and this is one of the strength of a "Joss Wheadon show") understands how the audience will make connections and just uses it against us. Ward described his brother as the antagonist which led us to believe he was beating Ward and his little brother but it's later revealed the older brother made Ward harm his little brother... which in turns made the reveal of Garrett recruiting him and acting as the big brother in this scenario work so well. Also, if you've watched the show, do you remember how early we heard people talk about people being born evil (Ward)? This as a setup for Skye in season two was also in my mind well done in its subtlety.
I kinda disagree that character development happened mainly after Cap 2 because a lot of it happened before for characters like Skye, May, Coulson, Ward and Fitz but I'll admit it was done very slowly. But on the other hand it helped make Ward turn so poignant. He started hated by most and by the time people warmed up to him... he turns out to be evil.
Look I'm not really trying to argue that shield is better or more enjoyable, but it's a perfect show for me. I'm the kind of guy who often spots small details and think a lot while watching a show or movie. And Arrow had some of that too. Andy Diggle being a visible name on Deadshot since the first time we see him was really smart.
But when I talk about the Melrose place effect I don't even mean CW (cause I don't get that here in Montreal) but the old one where everybody wanted to sleep with everybody else or was blood related to another character. And think back... Ollie slept with Laurel and his sister who ends up being Canary, Tommy slept with Laurel, Thea wanted to sleep with Tommy who refused and ended up sleeping with Roy who is Red Arrow/Arsenal, Felicity wants Ollie really bad, Malcolm slept with Ollie's mom and is Thea's father and is the villain of season 1, Ollie slept with Shado who Slade wanted to sleep with and he ends up the villain of season 2, Isabel Rochev's motivation was that she was sleeping with Ollie's father and ended up sleeping with Ollie, Felicity wanted to sleep with Barry Allen, Detective Lance is the father of two people Ollie slept with, Yao Fei was the father of Shado. Blood was seeing (sleeping?) Laurel... I mean at this point I'm fully expecting to learn that Ollie slept with Amanda Waller and half expecting that deadshot slept with Diggle's brother. I don't mind Ollie getting some action... but I'd like at least a few recurring characters that are not related by blood, sex or absence of sex... just a few... please?
Man that was long... apologies... I was told I would probably be better to start a new channel, put these ideas on videos and just link the damn thing instead of arguing with people... I'm starting to think it might save me some time in the long run.
In any case, again, I'm not dissing any of the shows, I enjoy them both just for different reasons. I think the writing in Shield is a lot more clever and more long term prepared while Arrow is a lot more action paced and has some of the best fights on TV. But in both cases they are enjoyable in their own rights.
Again, love the show and take care

Jean-Francois Charbonneau While you missed the big counterexample (Ollie and Diggle aren't related by blood or sexual tension (sorry shippers)), I absolutely see your point on the heightened sexual nature of Arrow, but that's also a pretty common trope of superhero comics (notably in Green Arrow), so it never really bugged me.
In fact, many of the relationships Ollie gets into on Arrow are canonical, or otherwise extrapolated from canon (Laurel and Sara are an example of this concept, Sara being a new character created out of Laurel/Dinah's Black Canary aspect.).
And, applying your "Melrose Place" theory to Agents of SHIELD (*spoilers to readers who haven't seen Agents of SHIELD*): Fitz wants to sleep with Simmons who wants to sleep with Ward, who wants to sleep with Skye, but slept with May (but he didn't want to sleep with her). The thread exists in both.
It's not foreign to fiction. Riker slept with Troi who also slept with Worf, all under the command of Picard who slept with Dr. Crusher.
By the way, I fully agree that Summer Glau was underutilized as Rochev, both in character motivation and place in the larger arc. Forgot to mention that earlier.
Seriously loving the long comments too. Haven't gotten into a lengthy discussion in the YT comments forever!
This is the most I've ever typed "slept with" in one sitting in my life, so thank you for that as well.

Geek Crash Course "This is the most I've ever typed "slept with" in one sitting in my life, so thank you for that as well." Okay, that made me laugh out loud, scared my girlfriend who gave me a WTF look... But... My pleasure...?
About Shield being the same... (makes his best fanboy impersonation) It's not that at all... Simmons doesn't want Ward... oh wait... she wants Tripplet... his replacement. But it's not like the villains are also... oh wait... Coulson and the Peruvian army girl in the second episode... But you're wr... I mean it's... (sigh) fine... I see your point. (ending the fanboy impersonation)
I disagree in that on Arrow it's everyone not named Diggle but I agree that I didn't really see it from both perspectives. I still think it's really downplayed on Agents and overplayed in Arrow. But yes, if we look just at the main cast both shows love stories are there for pretty much everyone. One show use it more in the forefront while the other keeps it's way more subtle. And you forgot Skye and her ex sex scene and I forgot Huntress.
Speaking of which, I'd like to mention something you probably already know and would agree but I absolutely love the portrayla of women on both shows. Even the "weaker" women are all really cool and kickass in their own rights. They all have their strong sides: Laurel never backing down, Thea not accepting the shit she's being fed by her brother and boyfriend, Simmons willing to sacrifice herself for the team and Skye willing to go into a dangerous situation to get the bad guys. Oh and I don't think anyone was scarier on Arrow than Moira. I think I might be more scared of screwing with her than Slade. Ok maybe not him but Malcolm for sure. While it's not really surprising of a Wheadon show and I have no clue how CW shows are normally, I'm really glad that the first two superhero TV shows of this era does such a great job in regard to writing women.

superhero drama just bums me out cuz i cant taken it seriously. granted half of the fun are the special effects which is the main reason i watch anything toku. although i do fall for the coming of age plots like hibiki and fourze and peter parker. watching a loser grow is engaging for some reason
