vincent van gogh was a painter from the netherlands who suffered from mental illness, in the 1800,s he cut off his own ear ,due to a bout of delirium ,while going thru alcohol withdrawal-his most famous painting is starry night, his painting sell for millions, today-he died penniless
When I was in 4th grade in the late 1960's we had "picture study" in art class, which consisted of a pack of 100 small cards of images of famous paintings. We had to learn the name of each painting, the artist and their nationality. I still remember most of them and can usually identify one of those artists based on the picture I learned many years ago because of their style. It even compelled me to get a Minor in art history. Why isn't this taught in school anymore?

Vincent Van Gogh is one of the most famous painters that ever lived . He is as famous as Leonard da Vinci who painted 'The Mona Lisa'. (I hope you have heard of that even ??)
It's actually pretty tragic that somebody of your age has never even heard of one of the most loved artists who ever lived.

I JUST CAN'T WITH THESE young people who don't even know who Vincent van Gogh is...I mean, it's right there in the song. OMG, he can't even pronounce his last name. pathetic. I mean, Mona Lisa, Rembrandt, daVinci, Picasso, Michelangelo...? Anyone? The Last Supper...anyone? SAD!

He was a Dutch painter and he suffered from severe mental illness, he had actually cut off one of ears when he was delirious and in the end he committed suicide. It’s such a shame that you don’t know much about what you react to. Google Vincent Van Gough and maybe then you’ll understand what he went through
Your nasty and pretentious. How did you feel when other people spoke about Vincent Van Gogh or any other artist for that matter, and you didn't know who he/they were? or were you blessed and knew about him and every other famous artist the day you were born? Your comment shows your ignorance in more ways than one. And guess what? through this youtube music channel of discovery, at some ones request, he knows now. At what age should we know art history?

Now, the English I believe pronounce it "Van Goff" but I'm not entirely sure. I just know this clip from Vincent and the Doctor has it as Van "Goff" This guy has no excuse...he's not British lol.

Vincent Van Gogh, is one of the most famous painters in the world but was never acknowledged when he was alive, died of a suicide at age 37.
The line between genius and insanity is paper-thin. Yes, he did shoot himself in the stomach and it took him four days to die. His brother set with him until he passed. Vincent Van Gogh's last painting was recently sold for 120 million dollars. He could not give them away when he was alive.
The bigger tragedy is that he could have made it through the wound if it hadn't become infected.
Many of the lyrics actually describe several of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings.

There are over 800 of his paintings still in existance, the top 9 are worth almost a billion dollars
He cut off his ear lobe. He committed suicide. One of history's most famous and influential painters.
Perhaps someone has mentioned this below, but, there is theory that Vincent was covering for a youth in the area, and claimed he shot himself.
That's all it is, though...a theory.
@@kathyg1660 Very true. The fact that he was shot in the stomach and not the mouth or brain makes it seem plausible IMHO. By plausible I don't mean likely, just reasonable..
Just do a simple Van Gogh Wikipedia read...Then this song will make sense..

Don't feel bad, a lot of it went over my head too back in the 70's. I'm sure I'll listen to it again someday and maybe understand the 'frame less heads on nameless walls' lol
I admire your guts to actually post this admitting that you don't know who Vincent Van Gogh is! Did you go to grade school? Have you EVER read something other than comic books or "Dick and Jane" books? Please, for the love of god, go to a friggin museum!
You are missing out on so much aesthetic joy! Visit some art museums! And try your hand at some painting yourself --- it will help you to appreciate what you see in museums, and you may even get hooked on it yourself
