one of the most beautiful things ever recorded! i am a big tough guy, mid 50's and worked all of my life in construction, but this song still reduces me to tears if i listen to it alone! big love to all people and thank you once again guys for this excellent channel! :D
This song give me chills. An important line, “Portraits hung in empty halls.” His most expensive painting sold for 85 million dollars, after his death, of course. His paintings are in every art book in school. He is so important to art, and never knew it.
This son brings a tear to my eyes and touches my hart, he was the soul of the poor and painted them. His brother sometimes bought his painting to help Vincent and was with him at the end.
Thank you for this thoughtful and educated review. Don McLean is said to have written this song while still in high school, waiting for the school doors to open, on a paper bag. It seems probable that Van Gogh suffered from bipolar disorder, in a time when there was no effective treatment.
Vincent Van Gogh was one of the greatest artists who ever lived. There's a scene in an episode of the British Sci-Fi TV show "Doctor Who" that illustrates it well. The Doctor brought Vincent through time to a modern exposition of his work. He asked one of the attendees at the show what he thought of Van Gogh's work. The upside was that Van Gogh was one of the greatest artists of all time because he took the pain of his life and used it to create transcendent beauty. This is so very true. I love his work.
Most of Van Gogh's work was done when he was in recovery periods from his mental illness. And so I have to wonder what more beauty the world was robbed of because the state of mental health care back then was so very poor. Had he been able to get more effective help, what more beauty could he have created? We'll never know.
One of his paintings was sold in 1992 for $75 MILLION dollars ! Vincent suffered from epilepsy which, in that time, wasnt really understood and he was considered a freak. He finally shot himself in the stomach and spent two days dying, in pain. McLean is a brilliant poet and has an amazing ability to communicate his feelings. I can clearly see the images he paints with his words.
The complete letters of vincent van gogh is one of the best books ive ever read . Its a collection of letters Vincents brothers wife saved that he had sent his brother during the time he decided to become a painter late in his life up until his death .
Don is a brilliant poet who puts his poems to music. Listen to Empty Chairs. That one will make you cry. Guaranteed. He is from my era. His poetic inference makes you look into yourself and feel for others. In this era of selfishness and Societies his words are reflective and contemplative.
This song breaks my heart. He was such a BEAUTIFUL person, but he never really realized it. I think that really says it all. We are BEAUTIFUL SOULS. Sometimes, we really never accept the fact.
You can never be a prophet in your time and county, thats how it goes. Edvard Munch wasn t loved until long after he died in Norway or anywere else. That is sad but a fact.😩
" Starry Night " is one of Vincent Van Gogh's finest impressionist paintings. ---------he suffered from terrible depression, & took his own life as a result. he was the leading Dutch master Impressionist. -----------------------MJL< 75 y/o
Vincent van Gogh would not take charity, he would ask people to buy his paintings. But a lot of people would not buy them. His brother would buy his paintings through a third-party, that way Vincent wouldn’t know about it, but that way he would get money,
It really is such a beautiful song, at first I thought the song was sped up but later realized it is a live version. Crossroads is also a brilliant song by Don McLean. Thanks for the tip to test out the song on my own channel first before requesting it. Good idea.
you have to watch the dr who episode where they visit Vincent and take him to the future - to the Musée d'orsay to see an exhibition devoted to him - they added to th good things in life
Van Gogh is reported to have had bipolar disorder, Meniere’s disease (condition of the inner ear resulting in acute, violent attacks of vertigo and hallucinations of rotary motion), thujone poisoning (interfering with the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, causing mood elevating effects) from his consumption of absinthe to counteract his attacks of epilepsy, anxiety, and depression. A sick man, and a damn shame! They recently found complex musical compositions, some complete, some not, written by Nazi concentration camps prisoners while in these death camps. Through hunger, torture, and the constant threat of death they wrote their music about and through their suffering. The human mind and spirit is paradoxically both delicate, and yet overwhelmingly & phenomenally powerful!
I was the "special" one in my family thanks to brain trauma caused by an errant driver. Just like Vincent's brother sent him money saying he had sold his paintings, my parents sent me money every birthday even into my old age, only to find they were barely making it themselves. Damn
Don McLean an American Icon; a genius; only a human with tremendous sensitivity and smarts is able to write a song like that; I was very disappointed at the lack of sensitive reactions from you two. I myself was in teas when I first heard the song.
I used one of Don McClean’s rarity songs, This Perfect Love, as the first dance for my wedding because he could capture so much real life in such beautiful lyrics and simple melodies.
Actually, there is a debate going on now that he was shot by his brother or someone else. to me, from the evidence I've seen online is that, as tormented as he was, he didn't kill himself! No one shoots themself in the stomach and then goes looking for help... The reason they think it might have been his brother is that he didn't want to get him in trouble and so he said he did it himself. Quite a guy if true...!!!
Dont let anyone call "YOU " a loser ....especially if you have faith in yourself ....vincent never sold anything substantial in his life ......and yet ...look at him now ....same as the beatles got turned down ... the "taste makers " dont know !@#$ !!!!
Few know of his compassionate work as a layman evangelist among the poverty stricken poor among miners in a small village in Belgium. He had an immense heart that was broken many times in his life. When the visiting bishops saw Vincent at work among the miners, they were shocked and embarrassed that he looked as poor as they and promptly prohibited him from preaching and feeding them under their auspices. His brother, seeing his brother fail at something he had put his heart into, suggested he develop his artistic talents, as primitive as they were. His Art became a treasure to the world, but during his brief life, his paintings were his only consolation. His attempts at friendship and love were ultimately rejected. "A silver thorn, a bloody rose... lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow." Beauty from ashes is the nature of his story.
In his lifetime Vincent sold a single painting and was largely unknown until just weeks before his death when the art critics were starting to take notice.

This song is beautiful. A very sad song about the loss through suicide of a wonderful artist Vincent Van Goh. RIP Vincent. Thank you Don McLean.
"This song is beautiful."
'Nuff said!
hands down, one of the most beautiful tragic song ever written.
This song give me chills. An important line, “Portraits hung in empty halls.” His most expensive painting sold for 85 million dollars, after his death, of course. His paintings are in every art book in school. He is so important to art, and never knew it.
Such a beautiful song. The wistful sound of Don's voice is perfect for this song
There is a wonderful you tube out there that shows Van Gogh's famous paintings on the background while McLean sings Vincent.
This son brings a tear to my eyes and touches my hart, he was the soul of the poor and painted them. His brother sometimes bought his painting to help Vincent and was with him at the end.

How can someone write such beautiful lyrics

Have you seen the wonderful movie “Lust For Life”? Kirk Douglas portrays Vincent Van Gogh so beautifully.. such a beautiful song.
He lasted to 103....not bad for one of the last Hollywood greats. Just got one thing to say.....'I'M SPARTICUS!'.
In the movie "At Eternity's Gate" infers that Vincent was accidentally sott by some boys fooling around with guns. He refused to turn them in.
Forget the movie, read the book by Irving Stone.

THIS is the Don Mclean song that I love best. American Pie is ok....but, the depth of this has always amazed me.
Don is a brilliant poet who puts his poems to music. Listen to Empty Chairs. That one will make you cry. Guaranteed. He is from my era. His poetic inference makes you look into yourself and feel for others. In this era of selfishness and Societies his words are reflective and contemplative.

This has always been my favorite Don McLean song! It's about the life of artist Vincent Van Gogh, who tragically took his own life!
You can never be a prophet in your time and county, thats how it goes. Edvard Munch wasn t loved until long after he died in Norway or anywere else. That is sad but a fact.😩
One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
My lovely Divinity teacher introduced me to this song in the 70's. Thank You Ms Musgrave!

loved how you let the song play out before you commented. Great response!

I subscribed because of your beautiful reaction and the depth of your understanding of this song. Thank you. ❤️
Today, the Starry Starry night painting is worth $100 million dollars. Most of the others are in the 40 to 50 million dollar range.
Kirk Douglas should have won the Oscar for his masterful portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh in the movie Lust For Life.
Rest in peace Mr. Douglas.
If you are being bullied, then you know you are doing something right...
You beautiful reaction is second only to the beautiful song itself. Thank you.
A beautiful mellifluous eulogy to the great VVG 🌃 Wonderful reaction Enoma 🌌
I am sorry to say it. Vincent was never sane. But MY GOD did he create some beauty.
This guy gets it. Good reaction. Thanks.
I know there are many dialects in India. I just want to say Dhanyabaad. I love your reactions. I just hope I got the dialect right.
I love this song, and love listening to your opinions!
The painting Starry Starry Nights is in The Modern Museum of Art in NYC. You can see it online.

BEAUTIFUL!
All of Vincent's paintings in today's dollars would total more then 1 Billion dollars.
I was the "special" one in my family thanks to brain trauma caused by an errant driver.
Just like Vincent's brother sent him money saying he had sold his paintings, my parents sent me money every birthday even into my old age, only to find they were barely making it themselves. Damn

This whole album is great! Poetic!
You are very knowledgeable. I enjoyed your reactions.

Dont let anyone call "YOU " a loser ....especially if you have faith in yourself ....vincent never sold anything substantial in his life ......and yet ...look at him now ....same as the beatles got turned down ...
the "taste makers " dont know !@#$ !!!!
I think a Van Gogh starts at around $80 million and that would be a good deal.
His mother said that she threw out a lot of his paintings.
If this song do's not move your soul ! YOU have no soul ! 71+ 🇨🇦 Yorkshire expat
Vincent Van Gogh, was the famed Dutch Impressionist artist, who committed suicide.

Live i think from SOLO album
It is true that some guys were playing with their guns and then accidentally shoot Vincent while he was walking in the garden?
❤❤❤
In his lifetime Vincent sold a single painting and was largely unknown until just weeks before his death when the art critics were starting to take notice.
Sir your wife is so stunning one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen
