- How to install Skim Coat concrete counters over ANY countertop material. I used Henry Featherfinish, the standard for this type of project and got great results on my old kitchen countertops.! This can be applied to laminate, wood, stone, etc.. and is a great way to update / makeover an old kitchen or bathroom.

MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further. - Навчання та стиль
So for people asking about longevity of this approach I think I can weight in here. I actually did this same process 4 years ago this month with Henry feather finish. I used a different sealer and impregnator but you get the idea.
For me the countertops mostly look the same as the day I did them. Really the main areas of wear I have seen have been the edge of the countertop by the stove and sink (places you'd lean against).
For the price id do again. My previous laminate was trash and this is a good solution. The nice thing, for the price of materials, if you don't like it you can just buy another countertop and not be out too much more than before the project.
Hope you like your results. Cheers
Did you do a thick or thin first layer?
@@sharbyduke I had started with a thin coat and just kept doing multiple coats
Did you like your sealer? Do you have to reseal often?
i cant get that where i live, what would you recommend? It cant be hard to make surely, cheers
Not a huge fan of how splotchy that looks, but hey, as long as you like it!
Yea it looks pretty brutal and DIY look
@@Scottsideways lol all of his stuff has the DIY look....he's not a pro but tells you how to do it yourself.
I like the look. It gives it rustic character. It’s supposed to look that way.
7:03 That bag 😂
That’s some “hard” concrete 😂
was wondering if anyone else saw that......
This looks so cheap.
It's too thin to last more than a month.
Yea there’s no chance that thing will last.
it will separate from the countertop.
Im also interested if it will stand a hot pan, since the coefficient of expansion will be diferent between the wood and concrete
Yeah, honestly it would've been so much better to show how you can build your own. You can practically use the old countertops as a guide and go from there. Plus there's countertop mix that doesn't end up looking like that.
@@BillPairaktaridis He have already build concrete countertops before.
I’ll be honest I’m not a fan of this idea.. I think wrapping it with a vinyl would have been a better idea, that being said I love that your using original
Worktops instead of buying everything new 👍🏻
That would be more of a completely modern look
He could have done epoxy, etc granite but that’s not his style
Wrapping with vinyl. Really! That would look like something out of a single wire trailer. A freaking sticker! Come on!
@@dustyniederriter7543 calm down dusty 😉
Lol until you accidentally sit that (just off the stove pot) on the counter. Toodles.
Did this when we redid our guest bathroom and it turned out great!
I love how unique you are. I’ve heard of these countertops but never saw it done. Keep up the amazing work. Looks awesome 😊😊😊
I love the look. This will be my first winter project!
I love the concrete look. I think this looks Fab!!
Mine were chunky and squared off instead of rounded. I used Ardex feather finish and I have loved mine (mine are a lot darker) for 11 years. I'm only now replacing them, not because they haven't held up (they have) just doing a whole kitchen remodel with different layout.
Did you use the same process?
@@lynnporiumartdecor8348 Yes, be prepared for so. much. dust. Took forever to get it out of the house. If I were doing this again, I would have taken them outside. I put 3 coats of Ardex on, then stained them dark and sealed them. It held up for years.
@@debbydhill thank you Debby for sharing and responding!! 🙏🙌
@@debbydhill what did you stain them with??
@@gracewang202 Concrete stain from Home Depot in a dark gray
I love it! Thanks for showing an easy way to get these
Can’t do a backsplash? You form it separate like you would for any granite backsplash, then adhere it on after.
Yeah I thought the same when he said that.
I did think they was going to look better but hey, diy is a great thing. 👍🏻
These are great. I own rentals and these might be the solution to old laminate counters I don’t want to replace that look too old. Thanks.
Perfect Situation! let me know how it goes if you try!
Eh this is on the DIWhy end of things.
Thanks for doing something new every time so we can choose the best option from your videos. Much appreciated!
... I dunno about those results, chief... Looks pretty splotchy. Suppose it could be good if you're going for an earthy look, but I kinda feel like concrete is meant for more modern minimalist designs.
Looks awesome!! actually came out super nice
I watch this guy’s videos to feel good about my dexterity lol.
I think it honestly looked better with the fake wood. Not that it looked good but better
I love concrete, love a lot of your videos... BUT, this one is a no (for me). It's not aesthetically pleasing and it won't last any length of time, sorry
Where is it you think it will fail?
@@freedomofreligion3248 it will crack in a number of places, the edges will crumble in places. It will be brittle and won't withstand impacts well. Someone's comment below confirmed this from experience. Not wanting to be negative, but realistic. I would install proper concrete countertops with mesh/thin rebar/fiberglass strands and a few coats of sealant. They look stunning and will last a lifetime 👌
Love your hair dude! Absolutely love it.
The sealer kind of reminds me of gesso, which I use to seal jigsaw puzzles: it also goes on milky white, dries clear, and is sticky while it's setting.
Fanstastic work 👏👌 thanks my friend👍👍👍👍👍🥰
List of prior vids to watch for Cement, that you mentioned
1-800-SUPER-FAIL 🤣
Dude! I dig that! I'm gonna do that in my house
Loveeeee great work!
Cant wait for the break video.
I absolutely love the look and the way your project it turned. I would love to hear how things have held up since you posted your video. My first project is going to be a 36” bathroom vanity top my guest bathroom and although it won’t be used on a daily basis, because it is a bathroom being exposed to water and longevity is something I’m curious about.
i like the idea and if i did it i would use a dark pigment to make it a darker gray.
They look brown for some reason but the only thing I want to suggest is to caulk the top seem to make it look more clean! Good job!
That turned out really good
mine as well of just bought new laminate countertops
Super cool!
I like the look just curious why you would go with this method instead of pouring like you did with the backyard bbq? Is it cheaper, faster or just another option?
I really like this video's especially your's
Not sure about this technique. Looks very rough. It does look OK, but seems to be was too messy for my liking. The coating also seems to be paper thin.
Not sure about US, but in Oz we can get cheap hardwood panels from the local home depot store. Seems to me like it would've been easier, faster and better looking.
Thanks for the 💡 💡 idea
Not a chance this lasts longer than a few months under normal kitchen use
I was wondering what happens if you drop a dish on the counter top.
@@rchavez5056 crack
Considering it is designed to fill voids in subfloor, probably last pretty good
As soon as I started researching concrete counters to redo a bathroom, this stuff came up. Tons of diy blogs and videos recommend it for kitchen use and all say it lasts years.
Random tips to add:
A slightly thinner slurry levels easier, but its still best to do several thin coats.
For the corner edge, we applied a copper right angle strip with liquid nail and a few pre-drilled flat screws, and avoided the chipping where it gets wear and tear.
You can get sealers designed to add dye to have a solid color, or marbling, etc rather than gray.
You're going to want it as smooth as possible so there's little sanding. A thinner mix helps this, as does finishing with a soft squeegee as a scree.
We also wrapped a large cutting board in plastic and pressed it in slightly as it dried. It made a small indention that holds the cutting board still, but it can be taken out to clean.
Ariat workware, keeping the crack in the Grand Canyon !
Interested to see how they hold up over time.
Do you think this would work to clean up existing concrete countertops? I have concrete countertops that weren't finished well and easily get stained or have rough patches.
is this the first video in 5 years or so on this channel that was not sponsored by Squarespace???
will this survive my coconut smashing needs? I hope so coz it looks awesome
is this able to be colored with a dye or added colorant? I would love this but I would want black for the design in my kitchen
Dude you should bust out the xlr mic more often, you lookin like a handsome news reporter lol
What happens when you apply pressure or drop something on these? Does it crack instantly?
Have you posted the 1 yr update? I would like to see how they held up.
How has it held up? Would you do anything different or are you still happy?
looks good... is that cook top induction?
Nice. Have you tried coloring the concrete?
Bizarre
won't this break apart the first time you hammer meat on?
Let's hope that Mike doesn't, um, hammer his meat on it then - LOL!
Looks incredible. Well done!!!
You did such a great job but this is 100% straight culture
yeesh.
How many box’s of concrete did u use can u paint it then add the sealer?
Liked the video immediately after i saw Simba 😂
How about a bus update video? How’s that holding up?
It’s astounding how many negative comments this channel gets… I don’t get it
Honestly. I don’t get it.
How does this hold up to cut marks from preparing food on the counter with a knife or anything heavy falling on it
Very rustic look that’s for sure 🤔🤷🏻♂️.
Idk with all the new sharp cool stuff you put in, I’m surprised you didn’t do full pour mold concrete countertops 🤷🏻♂️
I hate how these came out. And I've hated how a good amount of your projects have come out over the years.
But, you not only try new things, you show us how you did it and tell us about things you think you can do better. I may not like your tastes, but I've still subscribed because your content is interesting. You're good in my book, and while I may not want stuff to look like how you do things, I hope everything you've tried works for you.
Do you still have the bus and would you consider getting rid of it ?
Why keep the laminate? The concrete is only going to stick to the counter as well as the laminate which was already peeling. Wouldn't it be better to remove the laminate and do this directly to the particleboard or whatever is underneath?
Am I crazy for wanting to do this in my skoolie?
Been a year mike, are we getting an update?? I’m looking to do this soon!!
Here in india, we use Large Slabs Of Granite (10-14 Feet×2-4 Feet) And The Countertop Looks Awesome. Better Than Fake Wood And Cemented. I think you should try, if available in your country
Seems like you have a lot of money there in India 😂
The US is literally the wealthiest country on the planet, of course granite is available and used frequently, but not in a quick low cost DIY like this. To redo those counters in granite would have easily been $12,000-$15,000 and would require a professional company. He spent $25 on that box and probably another $20 on tools, that sealant costs $30. So he has a few hours of time and under $100 invested. Concrete countertops are extremely modern and look better than granite when done correctly.
Nope
Can you add color to the mix?
Is the concrete material food safe?
Great results!!
Where do you get your hair cut? And what products do you use?
Very nice job. 😊
Could've used a dark pigment to make the concrete look more evenly finished at the end.
This is a great video. I’m going to do my countertops but I’m doing resin, easier for my old bones. Some of the same prep applies. This house is really coming together.
Can anyone recommend an alternative product? I’m in the UK and can’t find the Henry Featherfinish :(
Mike the news reporter
Honestly I think the laminate looked amazing. With the right paint and flooring you could pull it off.
Im considering this for a bathroom, i keep reading it dries a brownish color which i do not want. I was already planning concrete countertops in the bathroom, but this seems much easier, but it has to be grey.
The US’ pancake batter consistency is so different from the European understanding of pancake batter consistency 😂
That was a dumb comment as it was way thicker than pancake batter.
Please nobody do this to their house lmao
"They are just cheap laminate countertops with fake woodgrain."
Now they are just cheap laminate countertops with cement skimcoat over woodgrain ....lol.
Looks alright. Splotchy af but what can ya do? It's like midway between flipper special and the landlord upgrade
How could you square off the edges?
Thank you Ariat shirt for covering up too much lol 😆 🤨
Is it possible to get lighter concrete?
Sorry dude. That looks bad (at least on camera). That being said, thanks for trying out and keep doing what you do.
Cool to see but surprised you didn't do something cool with plywood
So im guessing the counter tops are still going string after a year?
2nd
This looks amazing
..... good job 🥴
Mmmeeeeee
Looks great but I was hoping I'd see some color too. Nice job.
Well that’s a neat way to upgrade your countertops ❤️❤️ great job Mike!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Do a 700 euro budget build pls
Looks horrible to be honest
