+Spenigat Mancer You should pick up his slack! We need someone pouring those many hours of hard work into videos, and clearly Matt isn't doing it, you could probably do much better.
+Andrew Rabon "In Kula World 4 things take a turn for the worse. They completely forget the simplicity of the first 2 games and ignore the innovations of the third."
+Hunk Hill "I do like cubes, I find it amazing that every shape in a video game can be made from simple polygons and cube is the most elegant form of them. They are the simple building blocks of all things in video games and every time I think about that it fills me with awe, you could say that I am a massive fan of cubes. That said, this game has too many fucking cubes."
Game critique aside, I'm frequently impressed with the video editing in these reviews. Clips are rarely if ever repeated, often showcase the element or detail being discussed, and never show irrelevant information. That's a lot more awareness than a lot of video critics can claim, and it's as much of a joy to see as the reviews are to hear. Moments like the end of this video, where the clip demonstrates a narrated principle more abstractly or symbolically, are the icing on the cake that finish off a whole video's sense of connectedness. Bravo, Matthew.
I think I might've played the hell out of this game on a demo disk that came with a Pizza Hut pizza back in the late 90's/early 00's. God, what a time that was.

oh yeah, he's in my go-to videos folder too haha. I have been a fan of Noah for a while! I dig deep for these kinds of videos cause I can't get enough of them, haha. In the late 90s a video game shop opened up in the small seaside town I lived in at the time, in the UK. My brother and I would go frequently, browse the shelves and trade/buy games, but they also had consoles set up for kids to play new releases which was awesome. The staff would also be playing games on the big TV behind the counter, one day we went in and the owner was playing Kula World. It’s such a powerfully nostalgic memory, I asked what the game was called and I’ll never forget the title although I never owned the game outside of the demo. I tried tracking down the game as an adult, only to find that it was very expensive- luckily I now live in North America and it’s called “Roll Away” here and is much cheaper, so I picked it up a couple of years ago. Long story short I love this game.
It seems like such a fun, charming, surreal creative game. Did you ever play Kula World alongside your parents, it seems like a fun game to play along with friends and family.
The reason why This is one of my favorite youtubers is highlighted perfectly by his final sentence and the final action you see the ball make in this video, and how he flawlessly he coordinated the two.
One of the coolest things about this video is how the ball’s state stays consistent between shots. If it ends a shot rolling, it’ll be rolling at the start of the next one. There’s even a cute moment at 9:14 where the ball falls in one shot and lands in the next. I wish I was able to say I noticed this for myself, but it was actually because Matthew mentioned this in the REmake video on the second channel. I’d very much recommend it if you haven’t yet given it a visit.
Hahaha I just came back to watch this video after hearing him mention it in the REmake VOD. Brilliant to know how quaint and charming Matt has always been
This review is kinda heartwarming, with the little anectodal beginning section, and then just the praise of this apparently carefully and very well constructed game, which swings back in the end to remind the viewer that sometimes you can find hidden gems which will give you joy for years to come, even if the reason you picked them up was strange or trivial.
Thank you for the Information. That's odd, because "kula" is also a "sphere" or "ball" in polish. Given it's a swedish game it must be a lingual coicidence, nevertheless as a kid I found it intriguing. Edit: actually it originates from German, "keule/kūle"➡️German "Kugel"➡️ polish "Kula"➡️russian "Pula/Pulya".
@@yyy-ul3sb Makes sense. As the previous guy pointed out, years ago turns out, "marble world" is closer. Although Marble is refering to the material as well, which is "Marmor" in Swedish. "Kula" is hard to translate, I would just call it "Small spherical thing"
Oh my god. Matthew, I played this at a friend's when I was a kid and spent the following years looking for similar games in Flash form, and stuff like Super Monkey Ball (which is much less enticing). Finally I know its name, with your excellent analysis of why Kula World was so great. One thing I would add on the pause menu: I recall it reminding my dad of screensavers, which were all the rage in the late 90s for some reason. He had an extra computer in his office (he is a dentist) just running a screensaver, as it looked impressive to patients/customers. Kula World was especially approachable to non-games by lacking a 'theme' (which was seen as a geeky thing at the time, not sure about now), and its screenaver is one small example of that.
I love your in-depth reviews! Seeing you fortunately reviewing some of my childhood games (including the fantastic Kula World) with so much thought put into it and critique remakes from even more childhood games such as Abes Oddysee or Wind Waker bringing up the points that bothered me with the remakes as well is so satisfying!
Damn, this was one of my big childhood games, I can't even believe many other people even played it. To see a video on it? Utterly uncanny. I definitely agree with a lot of these points, although I haven't really consciously acknowledged a lot of this stuff.
hi Matthew, just discovered your channel by accident in the past 48 hours (completed MGSV and was looking for some info on some plot issues) - thus far I've watched your Mario Series, Metal Gear Series, Zelda Series, Dark Souls and few other videos. please keep making content, your indepth stuff is really illuminating and has certainly made me consider things in some of my favourite videogames I otherwise missed (gameover screens in MGS2 for example)...and completely damned the Tasty Incarnation of Abes Oddysee
I do like these ball puzzle games, Koropina on the Wii was a fave of mine for years! But Kula World is mega expensive to pick up on disc now. :( Been after a copy for ages.
+Larry Bundy Jr It's been ported to Android and released on PSN, so those are always options if you just want to play it but don't want to mess with emulators.
P4INKiller I'm not sure if it's rare persay, but it's highly sought after! So goes for around £50/$80 on eBay at the moment. But you got to find those PS1 games, could be a few gems there! :)
I remember playing the demo and being blow away. This game had a very dreamlike feel to it and until now I just remembered it as that 3d beach ball game. Great game/level design
I remember playing a demo version of this game at my friend's house when we were young. The game popped up in my mind some days ago, so it's a funny coincidence that you decided to make a video of it.
There used to be a Willy Wonka parody of this. It was SweetTart-themed and I loved it as a kid. There was a website full of Willy Wonka games and I played it all the time. I tried to find it again recently and it was nowhere to be found. I couldn't find it anywhere. I'm very glad I found this video!
Good to see you back, m8. I'm glad you got to work on something small and quick that you enjoy and you're not slaving away over a 6+ hour behemoth of a video for months on end.
I finally found it. I remember seeing a gameplay video of this on a demo disc more than 20 years ago and thinking the graphics looked amazing. Good times.
Seeing even the shortest of Matthew videos is a gift, he could have done a video on anything and I would have watched If another series comes out I'll probably throw a party
Good video as always, it did make me reflect on how some games don't get the appreciation they deserve, I'd never heard of that game if it wasn't for this video.
Just dropping in to thank you for this review on multiple levels. The game itself is one I loved as a kid, so getting to see someone elses thoughts was really refreshing. The review also made me more critically look at the game and your focus on the scoring system actually helped me with a massive roadblock in a game I'm working on in my spare time, how to make the scoring interesting, and a system inspired by Kula World actually turned out to be pretty interesting. So I figured I'd drop by and let you know that even a weird, spur of the moment review for an obscure, small title can have a meaningful impact. My game would be very different today if I hadn't watched this review. Crazy how inspiration can come from the weirdest places isn't it? Sincere thanks for putting out honest, interesting content. Cheers.
HOLY SHIT MATT I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER THE NAME OF THIS GAME!!! I ONLY EVER PLAYED IT ON A DEMO DISC BUT I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE NAME!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Yet another great video, Matthew. Nice work. I was really interested in picking Kula World up after watching this. Seeing as I don't have a Playstation, I was hoping to get it on the PSN Store for cheap. Unfortunately, it turns out it's only available on the European version of the store. Here's hoping that I can get it to run decently on an emulator.
I loved this game as a kid and was delighted to find Puzzle Dimensions on the PC. It's a spiritual successor to Kula World. It doesn't have the time restraints or the pickups, but many of the main mechanics are still there. Give it a shot if you want a more modern version of this game.
I have never heard of anyone else who played this game - one of the most excellent puzzle platform games I ever played, and I think one that helped my brain grow as a child. Definitely challenged me to think logically in a 3 dimensional space.
For those who don't know, game is called Kula World in EU Roll Away in US and Kula Quest in Japan and the last one is most complete game with extra levels and FMV cutscenes.
The new UA-cam subscription blob had me missing this video. I only got to see it because I felt the need to check the channel for new stuff. Good video, good watch.
If you like this kind of game I could also recommend English Country Tune. Doesn't have as unique of a scoring mechanic as Kula World, but it's got similar puzzle solving with some unique twists
I first played Kula World on one of the demo disks that came with the Official Playstation Magazine. I loved that game, along with Kurushi it was the best example of puzzle gaming on the PS1.
I used to play a Willy Wonka ball rolling game that was just like this! It ran like trash on whatever old computer I was playing it on at the time, and there was only a few levels, but I would play it over and over again.
Never heard of this game before, but it actually looks pretty fun, the 2 player mode, despite looking rather simple, sounds like it'd actually be really enjoyable.
Mate that game is worth considerable bucks now. I'm fortunate to have collected each PS1 gen FF, and Tombi 1 & 2, but the last I checked to get Kula World mint is upwards of £60. Take care of it :D
You make a good point towards the end. I sometimes do disregard games for their surface value and don't really give them a chance beyond that. I'll try to watch out for that in the future. Anyways, interesting video. Keep up the good work. :)
This game was called "Roll-away" in the US for anyone who might be looking for a copy.
+Deany Kong Many thanks.
This video is about seven hours too short.

+Spenigat Mancer Just a reminder for those that see this and don't understand irony, he was playing dark souls 2. It's a long game.
Disappointed there wasn't a "This is the first in a series of four reviews for the 'Kula World' series" at the start. :P
+Andrew Rabon Just still glad that this video exists :D
+Andrew Rabon "In Kula World 4 things take a turn for the worse. They completely forget the simplicity of the first 2 games and ignore the innovations of the third."

Kula ball for smash 5
Kula ball rolls in!
Smash 5 has been announced, now we wait for Kula ball
Well, there are DLC fighters left...
5 years later and I have some disappointing news...
The ball reminds me of Glover on the N64. Bounce, bounce...good times.
First thing I thought when I saw the thumbnail.
+peelsreklaw it reminded me of neverball. although neverball is more of a monkryball clone than it is of this game.

that last line was so perfectly executed!
Might add that since the game is Swedish, the world "Kula" means "Ball", so its effectively "Ball World"
Although hardly worth pointing out I'd say Marble world would be a more accurate translation, ball in swedish is boll.
Thank you for the Information. That's odd, because "kula" is also a "sphere" or "ball" in polish. Given it's a swedish game it must be a lingual coicidence, nevertheless as a kid I found it intriguing.

@Márk Hambuch
no fucking way thats amazing

I really like the sound effect for collecting fruits to an unsettling degree.

Really, it's rare now?
I had a copy up until recently, my nephew somehow lost it along with all my other PSX games.

I'm not sure if it's rare persay, but it's highly sought after! So goes for around £50/$80 on eBay at the moment.
But you got to find those PS1 games, could be a few gems there! :)
Now this takes me back to my childhood. Its probably one of my favourite puzzle games ever. Glad too see some people actually played it.
A new video from Matthew. I guess Christmas came early.
+Kabooki Slayer no, I came early.
Not the only thing that came earlier.
It took me a long while to get over how nauseous the changing perspective made me, but once I did, I loved this game!
That closing statement was perfect. I played this game as a kid and I absolutely loved it.
Jesus.. Dude, this really hit my nostalgia. I don't even remember how exactly I played this game, but I know I played this game all the time.

There is a freeware remake of the game available called Cubosphere. I do not know how much content is available for it, though.

Bless my ears with that voice Mathew
I've never heard of this game, but now I have to check it out thanks to this video. Good job.
10:11 certainly helps drive your point at the end of the video
Didn't notice that lol
(Yes I know this is 2 years old...)
This was one of my childhood games. No, seriously. I think I love you.
I finally found it.
I remember seeing a gameplay video of this on a demo disc more than 20 years ago and thinking the graphics looked amazing.

Beat puzzle game I ever played with my older brother on the PlayStation when I was 6 years old in 1998 I was born in April 15th 1992
Truly legendary game.
This was on the demo that came with my PS1.
+CornishCreamtea07 yep me too. played the heck out of it back then
Same
HOLY SHIT MATT
I WAS TRYING TO REMEMBER THE NAME OF THIS GAME!!! I ONLY EVER PLAYED IT ON A DEMO DISC BUT I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE NAME!!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Yeah
I understand your feeling
It is like when I remember the game World Scariest Police Chases
I loved that game as a kid
Yet another great video, Matthew. Nice work.
I was really interested in picking Kula World up after watching this. Seeing as I don't have a Playstation, I was hoping to get it on the PSN Store for cheap. Unfortunately, it turns out it's only available on the European version of the store. Here's hoping that I can get it to run decently on an emulator.
I had a demo of this game on a demo disc when I was younger. But I never found out the name of it until now, thanks
Oh mah gawd, this game is SOOOOO nostalgic to me! This and Spongebob were my most nostalgic games ever!
This and Kurushi really bring back memories. Kurushi is terrifying, though.
Kula world was so dope. I remember the changing perspective freaking me out the most as a kid.
Glad to see you're still alive!
Fond memories of playing this on a demo disc (and years later on PSP).
I loved playing Kula World. It's pure genius.
I loved this game. It's one of the most memorable experiences I've had with the PlayStation. I'd buy it if it came out today.

this entire games gui looks like someone turned on the bevel in blending options on Photoshop
+Alex & Toast that's how it was done back in the day.
ikr lmao its ugly as hell
Loved this game as a kid. Especially the sound the ball makes when you roll over something tasty :з nom-nom-nom
This look like something I'd really be into, thanks for reviewing it.
I remember playing this when I was 7 on a Playstation Magazine demo disc. Loved the demo!
If you like this kind of game I could also recommend English Country Tune. Doesn't have as unique of a scoring mechanic as Kula World, but it's got similar puzzle solving with some unique twists
Great review of an overlooked classic. Thanks for sharing. 👍
I remember playing this game's demo a few times. It was a pretty neat puzzle game.
Nice to see you back.
I have a dream.
That one day another Matthewmatosis video will arrive
Holy shit, I remember playing this! I completely forgot about it until watching this...
Oh shit I got a demo disc of this as a kid back in the late 90s but couldn't remember its name ever since, this is so sick haha
This was released in the US as Roll Away, for those unable to find it.
Oh my God, I had completely forgotten about this game!
Always wondered what the hell this game was, from my childhood. Happy someone finally cleared it up for me. Another gem from the ps1 baby
3 months and no video, feels bad man
i played this game to death as a kid. even got to the special levels after the end. good times.
That is to say, it makes no sense at all, and never will.
Somehow the most intelligent, and hilarious person on UA-cam simultaneously.
HOLY SHIT, NOSTALGIA MUCH?! I never quite forgot this game, but I never remembered its name.
Holy shit, this was actually the first game I got for my PS1! The memories!
I used to play kula world as a child im glad you like it
"It's too easy to figure out how its done then reload and do it again."
an finally beat this game after 23 years.
I know I'm pretty late on this... 3:45 - did you just tell me it's kinda like dark souls?
I first played Kula World on one of the demo disks that came with the Official Playstation Magazine. I loved that game, along with Kurushi it was the best example of puzzle gaming on the PS1.
I used to play a Willy Wonka ball rolling game that was just like this! It ran like trash on whatever old computer I was playing it on at the time, and there was only a few levels, but I would play it over and over again.
good review of a puzzlegame about a ball. ;-P
I really like your style!
for me Kula World is the best puzzle game i have ever played. Even now it doesn't look even aged a little. Such a visionary game!
Glad to see you are back Matty.
+DOG MAN Uh, ok, not like a tweet a week matters...
I love the ending of this video more than I love my immediate family.
Kula World. The video we deserve, but not the one we need.
I remember playing the demo of this game a couple of times are liking it a bunch.
Is this game what inspired that surprisingly annoying 3D Wonka Sweetarts game I used to play as a kid?
This game
Oh man, it was one of my PS1/PC gems I had around, even though it was in late 90s :P
Currently at a discount in the European PSN Store and costs only 3 €.
I vaguely remembered that it was recommended by you so I instantly got it.
Excellent work Matthewmatosis
You make a good point towards the end. I sometimes do disregard games for their surface value and don't really give them a chance beyond that. I'll try to watch out for that in the future. Anyways, interesting video. Keep up the good work. :)
I remember playing the demo of this. Good times.
