  • Tommy, who was born blind, demonstrates how a blind person may cook a meal alone by making french fries and a hamburger. He uses a toaster oven for the fries and a George Foreman grill for the hamburger.

    My sister went completely blind in her mid-20s, about 20 years ago. She cooks extremely well and can usually tell when things are done by how they smell. She can tell the difference between regular and chocolate milk by how they sound when poured. It's amazing how her other senses really pick up the slack. She's apprehensive about using the stove when her 3 year old grandson is around, mostly because he likes to "help." She's a trooper!

    The steak hand thing is close, but not quite. "Touch your thumb and your index finger together in the "OK" sign, and then press the fleshy part of your palm right below the thumb with your other hand. Feel how soft and malleable that is? That's the way rare steak feels when you press it!
    Now touch your other fingers to your thumb, one at a time. As you move from your index finger to your pinky, the pad of your thumb will get progressively more firm and resistant. This feels similar to steak as it cooks, moving from rare (index finger) to medium-rare (middle finger) to medium (ring finger) to well-done (pinky)."

    I don't know how you cope buddy, I'm 18 and visually impaired, pretty badly but not completely blind... I still can't drive and perform alot of basic, simple tasks and I still can't get quite alot of jobs that normally sighted people could do..
    I have massive respect for you, I find it so hard coming to terms with the fact that I can't do things, so much so that at the moment I've been contemplating suicide instead of spending my whole life being plagued with issues and boundaries that I cannot get past. Even things like catching a bus are a struggle alone, if not mere impossible. There is no hope for me :c

    • @lyrisea1935
      @lyrisea1935 10 років тому +9

      Don't say that! You just have to look at the things you CAN do and not the things you can't. You just have to ask others for help if you need it. I'm visually impaired myself and can't drive or do a lot of things others can. I just disregard them. If they can do something I can't, so what? I can still do many other things just like them. Honestly there's no need to worry!
      You'll get through just fine like everyone else. Just got to surround yourself with positivity! And if you need to, try talking to a psychiatrist. I'm sure they'll be able to help you figure things out! Don't be ashamed of seeing them either. It's for your benefit, not anyone else's.

      +Mirozenx You know I have a blind acquaintance at University, and she's the best language learner and singer I've ever met. Your other sense will be stronger, make use of those because you will be able to top sighted people in many things. And if science has a chance of fixing your vision and succeeds... the world is literally yours, you'll be like superman with vision and all the things you pick up without it.

    • @goldensloth7

      +Mirozenx That sounds rough! But there's hope for you! I'm bipolar and used to be overwhelmed by everything I'd never do. I'll never drive a car (due to medications) or have kids. But try not to compare yourself to others too much (easier said than done.) I hope you're doing better than when you wrote this comment. There's always hope, sometimes it's pretty hard to find, but it's there.

      I've heard (not sure if true) that women who are blind have much stronger orgasms during sex. The brain does not have to deal with all the signals that it usually does from sight. That means a lot of the neurons in the brain are redistributed towards other senses. Like the sense of pleasure (touch).
      So you might want to try it out and please report back on if that's true :)

    For testing burgers or steak. The way I learned it is that lightly touching the thumb tip to the tip of the index finger and tapping the palm at the base of the thumb is rare. Thumb to middle finger is medium-rare. Thumb to index finger is well. And thumb to small finger is well-done.

    I would love to know what flavors are your favorite. Just because I met a man who is blind since birth and I wanna cook something nice and tasty for him - He kinda likes everything sweet, but dislikes salad for example. I wonder if it's just because he has never eaten a very good salad with nice tasty ingredients because he eats this delivered food a lot which is served in canteens. Or that he simply don't like it. He loves coke and chocolate and sauces on everything. But I was thinking about if I could surprise him with a very fresh meal with some really good things and interesting flavors... Maybe that would be a nice thing to do. :) Or should I just stay on the boring save side and serve him a burger XD I just don't want to ask HIM because I want to kinda surprise :)
