Hey dude! I'm on the 3.02 system now, and I understood I cannot get into the FX parameters like you do in this vid (shift 16 just plays one of the CUE points now). Any ideas how to get there?..
YOU ARE A GIFT FROM THE GODDESSES, honestly I’ve seen a lot of 404 influencers outright ignore it or shit on it even tho honestly this is lowkey a powerful ass feature to add to an already modern, new and improved 404 arsenal
just wanted to quickly point out that bend buttons are actually a feature for beat-matching. imagine you managed to sort of sync the tempo of your two tracks but they're slightly offset so the track you're going to transition to is lagging behind, so can quickly tap bend(+) a couple of times to sync them perfectly, or if you went too far, use bend(-) to sync them, which is sort of common when djing with vinyl. old djs before the CDJ era used to put their fingers of the deck to slightly slow it down (bend -) to match the beats
As an ex DJ, my least favorite part of the whole sp community was the beat sets people made. Playing a beat, messing with fx, and then when the beat ends, you play the next one. If i were to perform my beats, i would use a dj setup, and beatmatch and mix my tracks. That how i wanna hear a set. Having the ability to do that here is amazing and I'm so stoked. The one exception to all that was Flofilz tho. His tracks were all the same tempo, so he played beatsets that were all in time and it was dope. Check out his sets on UA-cam if ya get the chance.
i think that it's interesting to see how producers managed to create transitions with an sp that is obviously not made for dj sets, and is very limited. it's a part of the lo-fi hip-hop aesthetic to get a rough/dissonant sound, so i just dont listen a SP live as i listen to a classic dj set, i see them as 2 different performance. Khryo's set for Le Melotron is a classic one, even if the beats arent on the same BPM, key etc. But yeah Flofilz is very good too, in a different way :)
Thanks for the video ! Couple of things I couldn’t figure out yet on this mode : - Can we lock the key for the speed changes not to alter the track’s key ? - Can we somehow route Bus 1 to the left track and Bus 2 to the right track ? Thanks.
All your vids a quality. Keep up the good work. I know the DJ mode is a bit of a gimmick but to add The bend +& - are for beat matching. (Some turntables had this feature means you wouldn’t have to touch the vinyl so speed up or slow the track.) Means you can sync the bpm and then if you start the track slightly off beat you and bend it to the right position rather than changing the bpm
I think the edit mode will be used for finding the first cue point in a track...seems a little convoluted, but with enough practice it could be done quickly and while performing
One feasible use case for edit mode is that it lets you (in 4.07 at least) turn the [LOOP] button on and off for that sample, in case it wasn't already in your desired state. You can probably turn [REVERSE] on and off too, but I haven't tried that, and its purpose seems less obvious.
Is there a way to assign FX Bus 1 and 2 to each channel, and not just specific pads? As eq-ing is a pretty big part of djing, I cant see myself using the SP for sets if I cant eq the two separate tracks that im going in and out of...
I wouldn't say it's a fail haha this at least makes it possible to mix. But what i would do, is seperate them by banks. Bank A is all sent to bus 1. Bank B is all sent to bus 2. And then you just keep bank A in channel 1, and B in channel 2. It's an SP, be creative
@@Randuski True, that is a nice workaround! It hurts my soul a bit, having half of my tracks not being mixable with each other, but it might not be that bad in reality. Have to test it when I get my hands on one
How does the external source stuff work with the DJ mode? I assume outputting audio is the same but can you assign the external source to one of the DJ faders?
Gratitude for this tutorial. How can you view individual track BPM’s when they are loaded in a channel? Right now I just see 90 BPM displayed for each track which is the project tempo, even though the tracks play at their proper BPM…
It does detect the bpm. It's probably not always accurate, so for your beats you wanna make sure it's right, and edit it if it's not if you're gonna use dj mode
@@bjamminsincebirth3494 so the older ones did too, the big numbers that show up on the screen is the bpm of the sample it detected. 90% of the time it's pointless, cause a snare sample doesn't have a bpm 😂 but the mkii actually has a way better detection for loops and such 👍🏻

The biggest problem of dj Mode is lack of time stretch. For example If you want to mix 130 bpm with 145, second track will change the pitch when you press "Sync". I hope guys from Roland will quickly realize this issue and will add "pitch lock" mode.
But you can change the bpm so why should you have any issue? Be my guest of course i don't mind time stretch on the fly,but you can just change the bpm as shown in the video.
Most people would not use tracks that have bpm that far apart, unless they want to play it back at original bpm speed, which would be a simple matter of dialling back the bpm. It's a none issue. I would say Roland has to put more priority in making sure putting a sample in chromatic keyboard mode across the pads, can be recorded with the different pitches. It's silly we can't currently record that straight away, without resampling to a pad first..
@@gaarakabuto1 I think changing BPM is done by slowing down the playback which means the pitch will change. Time stretching overcomes this with a clever algorithm. Anyways, DJing on vinyl also only lets you slow down or speed up with pitch shifting and for decades DJs have spun amazing parties without time stretching so who really cares?
You pretty much can make a 5 min complete mix on sp-404 alone with no additional equipment. That's quite a lot of power for a sampler, especially considering that you will never have a set up that insists of a sampler only.
Nice feature to have as a bonus. I just finally ordered the mk2. From seeing DJ mode demonstrated in a few vids I’m pretty sure for a full set I’ll stick to a turntable setup and making edits to tracks on the 404 beforehand when applicable. Could be fun at small gathering or a house party for a quick informal set though since it’s so portable, and also a good backup to have on hand in case your main kit malfunctions.
I agree, I doubt I would use it live either. I prefer the way I used to do it on the SX where I have different songs on different pads. I think this looks too fiddly when performing
Ahhh! Been waiting for this one. Question, (or 3) 1. Do you load your songs on the 16 pads before hitting “DJ mode”? 2. Can you also load loops not just songs, so each “DJ” track will loop until you fade-in the next beat? Lastly, I couldn’t see from the screenshot but is there any kind of time countdown on the OLED to indicate track length/countdown, it wouldn’t be needed if you’re firing off loops, you only have to fade in and out when necessary! These are not dealbreakers as such but would be really useful. As always, nice vid!!!
I was using loops here, they keep going round and round and there is a timer on the screen to show how close it is to the end of the loop. And you have to already be in DJ mode to assign tracks to channel 1 & 2.
How do you increase the volume of the headphones in cue mode? Its really quiet. Is it only that output volume knob that controls both headphones and master?
nice video, thank you! One question: can you use the DJ mode also for incoming sources? Like from the ext source button? f.e. if I play a turntable or another synth... ?
Don't think so, you have to choose pads for what plays in each DJ channel. You can probably have ext-source on at the same time though and play stuff over the top. I haven't tried that personally
Hey guys, be careful with that DJ mode on SP. I performed live DJ set using mk2 dj mode and during the mixing of two track SP restarted itself. It never happened to me before with the SP unit. I still dont know where was the problem but im gonna write to roland about it. Just let them know it could happens.
Yep - this is happening to me too. I submitted a support ticket with Roland. They had me update firmware, do a reset etc. but it's still happening. Next steps they're asking me to do is send in the unit for servicing :(
Can you assign a DJ controller to work well on this in place of something like serato?? Would the jog wheels and pitch sliders work as expected?? How about something like the Launchcontrol xl for a kind of dub setup or would this be better in regular mode?? Many thanks
I only really use it to fade between tracks so couldn't give an in-depth opinion, however my thoughts would be that something like Serato is a lot more robust and reliable. I wouldn't trade all that in only to use the SP
Is is possible with the BUS FX to put an effect on only one channel? To be able to mix in from a HP filter or something instead of the volume mixer. Maybe this is a bit much to pull off with only 3 knobs. Maybe an external midi controller with faders for the volume would be cool.
Can you load tracks from the SD card or do they have to be pre-loaded onto a pad first? In other words do you have to select which songs you want to use for your set by setting them up into your pads or can you pick from a whole library in your SD card?
Hey is SP404 MK2 easy to hook up to my Akai MPC one what's the best way to get the best out of it thanks -- also can it be used with my denon prime 4 dj controller thanks allot
There are a lot of different workflows you could use tbh. Experiment with using it before or after the MPC. Check out the connectors on the back and you should be able to work out what cables you need
I think i would use it but the effects could be more involed and we could have in die dj mode the Option that we can use samples and not only two tracks
Is it possible to switch from dj mode to pad mode while the music is going? Play one shot short samples over a whole song loaded in dj mode? You can't do anything apart from DJ mode when you are inside it, You have to quit out of it to use the other features. Maybe this will be updated in the future.
Hi there I'm looking for a box that can record from my phone then remix what I've recorded. Can this box record anything coming from my headphone Jack?
Depends on the software you are using. Laptop will always be easier imo but for us hardcore hardware heads its nice knowing we have the option to turn up with one unit and be able to do a set!
Obviously you can as long as you have exported them first, or if you have resampled a beat/song down to one single pad. I think this is much better suited for dumping a load of wavs on the device and then using it to do a live performance.
Excellent video! Answered the questions I had prior to receiving the MK2. Here’s one more question : can you resample what you’re doing while in DJ mode?
@@spvidz Thanks for the great video and the quick response! To be able to resample your mixes or just simple stuff in DJ mode.. Maybe they will address this if possible with a future firmware update. It seems totally capable
Can you switch over to your sample bank and play samples or live drum over the top? I’m thinking this mode could be good for making beat tapes out of the stuff you made on the device. One more question. Can you resample the DJ mode set? With 18 minute of sample time it’s not ideal for capturing sets, but could be cool to get a few beats mixed together.
@@Randuski yeah, resampling was more of an after thought as I would probably use my Zoom, but I would like to know if you can live drum/play samples over the DJ tracks for live remixing and making beat tapes.
@@dimensionstomorrow yea unfortunately it looks like you can't play samples on top. As soon as you try to go to play samples, it says "you're leaving dj mode, are you sure?" and then you have to click ok. Cause if your performing in a club, you don't want your track to stop haha
I think the issue is ... You only looked at this feature from a 'live performance' point of view. Some of those features you can't imagine using in a live situation ? Well what about a studio / production situation ? ... I guess it's early days, but there is likely some production / studio application of this mode as opposed to using it purely for live performance. What are the potential production applications ? Well, I don't have one in front of me ... But I think the key question here is if you can Resample output from the DJ Mode, or can otherwise record the output internally somehow. Assuming you can (record it internally, one way or the other), perhaps one studio application of DJ MODE is in 'blending' or 'flattening' multiple loops/beats/audio files that are not already the exact same length. Just load them up in DJ mode, adjust those loop settings you couldn't figure out as being useful in this mode, and sync, bend & blend the beats into one BPM matched audio file that you can then truncate into a new beat / loop if desired. That's just off the top of my head, I don't have one.
You can't record internally or resample in DJ Mode. I"m fairly sure its Roland's attempt to improve the live performance side of the device after live sets took off on the SX thanks to its long sample capacity per pad. Its only basic but you can't expect much more on a box that already does a lot of other things too imo. I think for what it is, its ok but I don't think I'll be using it much. Like I mentioned in the video I'll be sticking to the way I used to do it on SX. Dance DJs may have a much better time with this though thanks to the beat matching.
@@spvidz "You can't record internally or resample in DJ Mode." ...... Man, they missed a trick there - without that capability the mode has no production utility whatsoever. Seems like activating resample (and recording) capabilities while in DJ Mode should be a no-brainer, and a fairly high priority one at that.
Yeah looks a bit fiddly but give it time. In the right hands it could prove deadly. Still down with the original method of using the fx with interludes etc, best to keep it simple sometimes.
Nice features but they missed a few tricks. Like the ability to lock the fade knobs to each other, so you can turn the one knob. But they should have just added a DJ style fader to the front of the unit.
Dj over 20 years...hiphop is best to mix on the snare not on the kick..as you said mixing dance music you do on one the kick.. hiphop is easier on the snare because they are mostly on the 2. ...I will make a similar video when I finally get mine, but thanks for the overview.
What a disappointment. I have to pre-load the tracks to pads? And memorize them somehow? Is it not possible to browse the library and add songs directly? 😢

Honestly it would be less complicated to use a small recorder indeed of trying to resample
This seems quite legit. Being able to scrub through tracks would be clutch. The biggest problem for me is no track names.
There has been a huge update since this video so it’s worth checking out what they’ve added in newer versions of the firmware! 👍
Id love a tut on the other way to dj that you prefer, I feel its more creative
Awesome
Yeah looks a bit fiddly but give it time. In the right hands it could prove deadly. Still down with the original method of using the fx with interludes etc, best to keep it simple sometimes.
Agreed, I do think that someone thats well versed in beat matching could quite easily put together a seamless set with this tool!
They should get Ctl 3 to function as a crossfader .
Nice features but they missed a few tricks. Like the ability to lock the fade knobs to each other, so you can turn the one knob. But they should have just added a DJ style fader to the front of the unit.
Can you still use the DJFX/Looper while on DJ Mode?
of course! You can use all FX on the master signal just like normal. Apologies that I didn't actually show this, I got distracted talking about BUS
@@spvidz legend mate no worries
Thanks! I will never be using the J mode
Someone will find a use that edit feature. 😂 That’s only for the brave of heart!
Gotta set that first cue point somehow
How can I get one?
Yes boss
Dj over 20 years...hiphop is best to mix on the snare not on the kick..as you said mixing dance music you do on one the kick..
hiphop is easier on the snare because they are mostly on the 2. ...I will make a similar video when I finally get mine, but thanks for the overview.
Thanks for the info man!
What a disappointment. I have to pre-load the tracks to pads? And memorize them somehow? Is it not possible to browse the library and add songs directly? 😢
Man, I really hope I can afford this unit as I'm struggling financially cause you know... being a university student and all...
If you can't buy it twice, you can't afford it.
@@multipreach2674 Man, that's solid advice.
I can defo afford it twice at the moment, but it's prolly best not to cause a lot of that money will go to groceries and paying for my stay at this student home and more... I'm still learning to be an adult and these times aren't the best for it.
Either way, thanks a lot man!
Bro if you can't buy it outright save up. it's all about patience
this dj mode looks pretty basic, I think if you want to dj in the first place this might not be the best device for it.... otherwise it is a neat touch to have dj mode if you are into SP beatmaking anyway
boi, let me grab those KNOBZ. (lip bite emoji)
If anyone here has an sp404mk2 for sale. Hmu. I will overpay by quite a bit. As i need one asap. Thanks
ES-PAY
You just went into Dj mode and everything was there for loading tracks 🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂🤦♂
This video is out of date now and was uploaded before they updated it in 3.0. They did about 10 updates to DJ mode when 3.0 was released
