OMG. This is a gremlin I've had since I bought my boat 7yrs ago. This video has been extremely helpful to understand this phenomenon. I can now apply my thinking towards a solution. Thanks a bunch wish me luck.
Simply tie a spare line to your jib halyard as high as you can standing next to your mast, and loosening slightly you jib halyard, then tightly tie the second line to the deck somewhere (like the traveler). This pulls the line slightly away from the mast and screws up the airflow making the vibration. Fly high sail far life’s no dress rehearsal:)
Omg you're a life saver!! I am currently riding out the hurricane Ian and I looked everywhere trying to fix the shutters!!!! you posted pure gold bud thanks so much!!!!
Thank for advices. My concern was even more for when the boat is out of the water for winter. I don’t want it to fall out of his stands. So this summer I will try different solutions a bit like what you did and find the best for my boat. I never had that problem with other boat I had before. I though it was because that one is a fractionned mast. The top of the mast is only hold on one side so almost freestanding. And I don’t wanna put much tension on it for the whole winter and risk to band or deform the mast permanently. Very interesting subject! Thank.
I was able to temporarily suppress the pumping by simply putting all my ropes near the mast to interrupt the air flow but that didn't stick and some ropes like to clang. So now I have one small fender up the mast and everything is quiet again. I was looking forward to another sleepless night as a blow came through but now I've got a fender dangling on my mast.
Thanks for the video. Happy to hear that it wasn't just my older Beneteau but that the much sturdier Hallberg-Rassy isn't immune either. Tips very much appreciated!
Did it work for you? I'm thinking about three pool noodles attached end to end....The fenders are a little ugly.....but it works. Thanks for the comment. Take care.
I had that "humming" of the topping lift too and wrapped the main halyard around it a couple times which stopped it. The mast shaking is much more pronounced. I hope it works for you. Thanks for the comment. Cheers.

I hope you solved it. Thanks for the comment.
@@lenamaysailStill working on it. However mast windfoils, & rigging weights have come to mind. Their shape & location is still a puzzle.

A mate… thanks soooo much for this… i quickly wrapped a halyard around the mast and no more shaking. Thanks a million
I'm glad it worked for you.

@@lenamaysail I made it and learned a lot trial by fire

I tried everything then saw this video. Thanks. Worked for me 1997 Catalina 380. Was going crazy. Had to leave the boat a few times.
Excellent news. I'm glad it worked for you. Cheers.
thanks. So simple and so frustrating when you don't know what cause it!! Cheers from Muros
Yes. I'm so happy I found a solution. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

Ha. So it worked for you? Good news!!! It worked like a miracle for me. Halyards slapping the mast is not fun either.
Thnx, worked well with our 1976 Nicholson 35 (single spreader mast head).
Thanks for the video. Happy to hear that it wasn't just my older Beneteau but that the much sturdier Hallberg-Rassy isn't immune either. Tips very much appreciated!
Thanks for the comment. It must be all about the shape of the mast. I thought it was just me until I did the research. Hope it helped you. Cheers!
Thanks Kev very interesting , you learn something every day.
Thanks for the comment. Cheers!
Good tip, did you have the same issue with your Monsun?
No. I had mast steps like you do. I think that stopped if from happening.
@@lenamaysail oh wow!
Well done mate I have been having the worst couple of weeks kip because of storm enk
So funny! I just did the same thing today, hate winds from the beam at dock... still trying to find the best height now...

wow! I have the same problem. The spiral halyards didn't work either because I can spiral the top. I'll hoist fenders and see! Thanks!
I hope it works for you. I'm going to string two pool noodles together and try it. The fenders bang against the mast sometimes. Cheers.
Great solution
I have had some success taking tension off topping lift by letting the main sheat go a bit. But am keen to try your fender method.

So how did the pool noodles work?
Didn't help me... at all! Still enjoy your content! Miss you and be well!!
Thanks Brother. Take care of yourself. Cheers.
