- Owners. I went over them in two different leagues. But what happens when someone tries to be an owner but isn’t? In fact, he doesn’t even have the money and lies his way to the top only to fall so hard. And the team is terrible and went through one of the worst rebrands in sports.
John Spano is a cautionary tale in sports, to say the least.

Excellent video, Penguin Note. Very well researched and thoroughly done. Keep up the great work! 👍👍
John Spano: the George Santos of the NHL
Facts
Those dreadful TV dinner fisherman uniforms 🤣
The fans putting too much trust in the Gorton's fisherman🤣
Here comes the penguin and he is about to tackle John Spano and there is going to be a penguin fight.
For anyone interested in the true history of the Spano mess, pick up Nick's book. I, along with Art Feeney and Steve Ellers, led an organization (STIC, Save the Islanders Coalition) that acted as voice of the fans. It was our pressure that led the Islanders to can the hated Fisherman jersey and the 4 pikers known as The Gang of 4 (a name we coined) sold their share of the team shortly thereafter. Nick gives a much more accurate accounting of the Spano debacle than the ESPN film, "Big Shot".
I definitely will as I am intrigued
I know this video is a few days late, but better late than never, right?
My uncle had season tickets in 1996-97 i actually attended the game when they brought back the original logo mid-season, wasn’t an islanders fan we straight behind the visitors bench and always cheered for the visiting team.
The Islanders jersey with the wave pattern and the traditional logo is my favorite jersey they have ever worn. I own 2 of them
ESPN 30 for 30 did an episode on him
Big Shot. I watched that to get some information
@@PenguinNote67 love your videos. Hey can you please do one on the original Winnipeg Jets moving to Phoenix?
@@Hoovie9596 how about both teams? Stay tuned
I hate how the islanders made the 2024 playoffs with a losing record.
If you think that or the Caps making the playoffs this year is bad, check out some of the teams that made the playoffs in the 80's when 16 of 21 teams got in.
A losing record and a negative goal differential. They aren't a playoff caliber team.
@@patmanbnl although that format should come back. It would totally create new rivalries, and the most deserving teams would still wind up in the later rounds
John Spano.. quite arguably the smartest and dumbest man in the world!
As far as fraudster go.. He was one of the greats!
The Charles Ponzi of hockey, maybe even sports
He was a great con man. He told people what they wanted to hear. He was the only "owner" we had had since the dynasty years who let the words "Stanley Cup" slip from his mouth.
10:01 - Those NY Islanders jerseys they had after the fisherman logo was removed was there BEST ever = the only jerseys I have ever liked from the Islanders, and I somewhat liked the "Fisherman" logo. The waves and the Lighthouse shoulder pathes looked GREAT. Like many have stated, the "Fisherman" logo could and still would work as a 3rd jersey for the Islanders as they are not bad, just not the official / 1# logo that represent the team.
Because the Islanders jerseys are overall so freakin boring and have beside this period never caught my attention unlike most other teams in the NHL.
Their minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Islanders, use the Fisherman logo in their new uniforms. The difference is,they were inspired from the most recent Reverse Retro Islanders jersey, but they use the current colors. It looks really good in white
@@henrymanzano2201 I will take closer look at them!
Sounds like he and Meruelo would get along great.
Plus the swish under the fisherman looks like aquafresh, i always thought he was about to brush his teeth
During his jersey retirement, Clark Gillies praised Spano for buying the Isles
At the time, there was reason to believe that
As a former Islander fan, he's still the 2nd best owner (after Pickett) that team ever had.
Trotz wasn’t fired …. He left on his own with Lou blessing….nobody knows why . They don’t talk about it . Maybe wanted Lou’s job
His Mom had just passed away and I think after 20+ years of coaching, he needed a break. In any case, the parting was not acrimonious in any way as Isles had a video tribute (obviously, with LLs blessing) when they played Nashville at UBS a month ago or so.
I'm here after the collapse in Raleigh
Did I jinx the Islanders with this video?
Not really but the logo through is cursed
14:10 you show a nothing school like NJIT but leave out Wagner college on staten island . . . . . AND St. Johns? Plus, the staten island yankees didn't exist during the time in question here - and no longer exist today
This was the best image I could find of NY area teams on a map
@@PenguinNote67 fair enough 👍🏻
I’m here after that insane playoff game that just ended with a handful of words to say *ahem* NEW YORK CHOKERS! *5x CLAP* NEW YORK CHOKERS! *5x CLAP* NEW YORK CHOKERS! *5x CLAP*
It is the Island It is the New Jersey of NYC
Long Island isn't part of NYC. LI and NYC actually hate each other
Potvin sucks!!!
If Spano's last name was Spanostein the "charges" would never have come to light and he'd own the team today
Wrong, anti Semite. Jewish owners Greenwood, and Walsh both went to prison.
sure
