"Who hasn't had a couple of beers and decide to change their logo to a fisherman, I know I have?" LOL..classic Shannon... FYI, I like the Fisherman jersey.
The wavy jerseys with the original logo in the front are my favourite. It’s a unique stripe pattern, and they have never brought back the lighthouse patch, which is a shame.
I saw someone online said it looks like if the isles and Grateful Dead made a colab what we’d get would be the wavy jersey design and I can’t unsee it. I think they never brought the lighthouse back because they wanted the 4 stripes
tbf to the fisherman logo, fishing historically was very significant to Long Island’s economy and history. I grew up vacationing in the summer time out east on the island in quiet fishing towns on the north fork, so to me the aesthetic always made sense. I get why older fans have their gripes with it and the history associated with it, but i never understood the hatred for the iconography itself. The lighthouse is also beloved because it’s very reminiscent of the famous Montauk lighthouse which is a big historical landmark and very representative of Long Island as a region. Not sure if it was modeled after that lighthouse in specific but I would argue that’s the most famous Lighthouse on the island.
Insane collection. Wish you would have mentioned that the NYI are the only team, in all 4 major sports, to incorporate a map in their logo and the top of the "I" points to Nassau coliseum where they originally played and won four SC. Great stuff!
I love the Fisherman. It just speaks to me. And what it says is, “You want fish sticks”.😂 I did in fact buy one of the original Fisherman jerseys and it’s well received in my collection. Great one here, Shannon! Keep it up!😎
1) Did the Islanders play Downeaster Alexa while they were wearing the Fisherman jersey? If not, they should have 2) They should have leaned into the fishsticks thing and convinced Gorton's to sponsor the team. Red Wings fans get Little Caesars coupons or free pizza... Little Caesar's should sell pizza jerseys. 3) If they wanted to do a fishing reference jersey without getting fishsticks chants or at least less, they should do a trawler, or just make the lighthouse off the shoulder the logo.
The fisherman was hated and to a large part is still hated by a big portion of the fanbase because it took away the iconic dynasty logo. I wish fans that hate it would just embrace it as part of our history and drop the hate/fear of it replacing our current logo. The islanders have definitely had interesting an interesting jersey history, I’m glad they got it right the past few years.
Agreed the Navy Reverse Retro (w/classic logo) would be a great, full-time Third Jersey. It's classy looking, and a nice nod IMHO to those fans that perhaps grew up with the Peca/Yashin/Bates Penalty Shot Islanders. I imagine most of those folks are in their 30s, and 40s now with some coin in their pocket.
Such an amazing collection! I have to agree the original logo and simple design are iconic and best .. but I do have to confess that I still like the darker blue of the early 2000's and the retro's just a little more.
You're missing the only Islanders jersey that counts - the Dynasty threads. Different order of striping on the sleeves and the bottom than what they wore at the beginning and then returned to after the wave. Also - When they first started, the numbers on the away jerseys were orange not white which created a problem reading for fans and broadcasters. I mention this because when they ultimately went back to the original jerseys in the early 2000s they featured the orange numbers again for a short period as an alternate. First really deep dive - In 1977 there was no white stripes at all on the sleeves. Check Mike Bossy's 1978 hockey card where it's visible. There's also a famous photo of Billy Smith clearing the puck where it's visible. The "missing" white on the sleeve was for only one year. Second really deep dive - During the dynasty years, names on the name plate were blue with orange piping around each letter. That was eliminated in 1984 going forward. The BEST Islanders jersey to own is a classic dynasty era threads home or away with a Lake Placid patch marking it as a true first Stanley Cup jersey. Lake Placid patches can be purchased. The one I had sewn onto my Tonelli CCM is not a replica but goes back to the era.
To me the 2nd reverse retro in any ranking I might do if it had the lighthouses on the shoulders it would shoot way up that's the only bad thing they forgot on that the lighthouses would have looked incredible with the fisherman
I like aspects of the fisherman. I think the Bport Islanders Fisherman and the recent Reverse Retro are solid, but I'll never understand why they decided to not have the bottom stripe connect? It makes it look like a production mistake. I'm also in the minority of Islanders fans who feel that adding teal as a full time accent color to the brand would be good.
9:03 - The wavy jerseys with the original logo in the front is the best they EVER had. It’s a unique stripe pattern, and the lighthouse patch just is PERFECT. 8:00 - The Fisherman jerseys are still cool. I liked them back in the day and still vote for them to be the 3rd jersey behind the revered version just mentioned. 0:14 - Those jerseys was and still remain the most boring jerseys in NHL history. They offer nothing and says nothing about the team. Never did and still dislike there plain original design.
Thank u for bringing up the fisherman. Most younger islander fans today don't realize it's significance. They get all mad at us older folk for blaming our bad play with that jersey design. But it wasn't how bad we were: it was the fallout and reaction to it. As u pointed out, we had a dynasty not too long before that so it was not welcomed and u brought up how much ranger fans adopted it. But it was also the brain child of 2 mad men by the names of Mike Milbury and John Spano. Milbury is well Milbury, no need to explain him. But John Spano was the new owner at the time and he pushed for that logo. Except he was later exposed and arrested for fraud and lying about his net worth so it was a really bad look for us. And the logo didn't help either. When u go to games, it's only the younger folk that actually like that awful Gorton's ad. Older fans such as myself were devesated when they brought it back as an RR. And u guessed it: the only ones who brought it were young people. I'll just stick to my classic jersey lol
Great video! Hey, fun facts - the "original" Islanders blue and orange are the "official" colors of Nassau County, New York. Google "Nassau County Seal" and, boom, there you go. It's been so long now that people may think the county took the Islanders colors, but it's actually the other way around. Also, some think the Islanders and Mets have the same blue and orange; the Mets orange is (or was.) NY baseball Giants orange, the blue is (or was) Dodger Blue. Sorry, Mets fans, they wear pinstripes as a tip of the cap to the Yankees. Regarding the "fisherman" logo, I remember when they rolled it out and in the midst of the team being awful at the time and the whole John Spano joke, it seemed like another kick in the ole penalty box. It made us sad. Very sad. Sorry, not a fan although I know there are fans of it. One more thing, if you look at the Islanders "Island" logo, they chopped off Queens and Brooklyn, the logo starts (or ends) at the Nassau\Queens line. Keep up the good work!
the orange alt was my first jersey that I actually ever got as a fan. The first one was a peca white jersey my dad got for me when I was like 2 yrs old.
While NYI have gone "back to the original," like you pointed out with the Stadium Series and 3rd jersey, the original has 3 stripes on the stick and current version has 4 stripes on the stick.
I think most people hate the fisherman jerseys because it is associated with a dark times in the team history. Had they been successful in those jerseys, we would be talking about them differently.
if i had any control over this team's jersey i would change the royal blue to navy blue, make the numbers primarily orange instead of white, and keep the fisherman jersey as a permanent third jersey because it's just way too clean to pass up
The black jersey with ISLANDERS written on the chest is my least favorite jersey in the history of jerseys. It is beyond terrible. Whoever designed that should be fired into the sun.
I told a member of the ownership group in 1994 (who also happened to be a cousin and also grew up a Ranger fan) the huge mistake it was going to the fisherman. I mentioned the dynasty of not that long ago and he said they deferred to a marketing agency. What a huge mistake. And now the 15-20 year olds, who knew nothing of the fish sticks chants, walk around UBS in the fisherman jersey with current players names like they are some kind of fashion plates. Shame on their parents for not telling them the history of this debacle.
Speaking of Brooklyn. I only played hockey for a short time - roughly 3 and a half years - but I did get the chance to play at the the Barclays center with my high school and it was pretty cool. We got to stay for the game later that day against the ducks. Me and my dad left after the 2nd because we just can’t stand Islander fans. Cool experience tho
The jerseys that I have the Islanders in Adidas is the home, away, Reverse Retro 1.0 jersey and Reverse Retro 2.0 jersey not a big fan of their Alternate jersey
last season i went to belmont to see the islanders / flyers, saturday after thanksgiving. it was 80s nite, the decade of the dynasty, and the islanders wore the current ny third jersey. why not something closer to what they wore in the 80s, pretty epic fail in my opinion. who's in charge of marketing?
Anytime the Islanders have gone away from their original look it’s been a disaster. The only other one I even halfway like is the orange one. Instead of fish sticks it makes you think of an orange popsicle, so it keeps the food theme. Plus black with orange and blue, which they’ve tried, is just a bad combination. Even the Mets got rid of that.
the gateway to brooklyn, black and white, are THE WORST by far. FAR worse than the black ny mets jersey in my opinion, at least that jersey had blue and orange
Always hated the fisherman, but im sure you get why, tying into grass roots of long island history, included in a number of songs fromnour own Billy Joel!
Ok so besides trying to appeal to the younger generation, they were at the time struggling in every way financially! So in trying to raise funds, they collaborated with a manhatten firm to creat the fisherman and base it off Billy Joel one of Long islands long time born and raised residents down easter alexa song, which features the fisherman! So, yeah great reasoning behind it,but most of us cant stand even hearing about it,much less seeing it! It probably would have been more palatable if they really started to gain traction on their way back to establishing themselves as a feared club! But when your not and you come out wearing that monstrosity!🤦 Also doesnt help when you have your fiercest imo rival, the new york rags tearing you a new one over it!🙄
@@mannyoliveira776 there's no round about way to say it! Our team to the rest of the league starting with the rags looks like a joke with those jerseys! Disrespected and will never be respected! Just like when Anaheim first came in, known as the mighty ducks after the movie, ridiculous, no respect and didn't take long to cut down to the Anaheim ducks!
@@mannyoliveira776 it's cool to some that live here, everyone else it provokes laughter and put downs which I personally am tired of! There's been enough denigration of my team for most of the late 80's through today!

I adore the black with grey shoulders jersey
"Have ye ever been to sea?" Captain Highliner 😆

We went to a Rags and Fish game ten plus years ago in MSG. The entire time the Rags fans screamed “FISHSTICKS”. It was deafening.

I used to have those Reebok Islanders jerseys but also gave then away as well just the home jersey of the Navy jersey

The Long John Silvers jersey. 😅😅😅
I like the look of all the navy blue, very versatile good
Bold choice putting Stan Fishler on a jersey.
I know you're not very fond of them but i think it would be funny if you made a video ranking all of your word mark jerseys
I love the Islanders Fisherman jerseys even though they didn't win a lot wearing them
I liked the orange jersey from the early 2000s Islanders need to come up with a orange alt jersey again..
While NYI have gone "back to the original," like you pointed out with the Stadium Series and 3rd jersey, the original has 3 stripes on the stick and current version has 4 stripes on the stick.
Which (funny enough) the three stripe brand - adidas, have us the four stripes on the stick if I recall correctly
I think most people hate the fisherman jerseys because it is associated with a dark times in the team history. Had they been successful in those jerseys, we would be talking about them differently.
How about making a Top 15 Least Favorite List, whether it be All Time or Last 15 Years
I've made a ton of dumb decisions after a few drinks. I've never decided to put the Gordon's fisherman on my jersey.
They sell a fanatics version of the white wave jersey at the Isles team store
The fish finger brand is highliner
if i had any control over this team's jersey i would change the royal blue to navy blue, make the numbers primarily orange instead of white, and keep the fisherman jersey as a permanent third jersey because it's just way too clean to pass up
Would be nice to see your levels of jerseys ( approx price)
What to look for etc
Are you going to do an Olympics jerseys collection video?
The black jersey with ISLANDERS written on the chest is my least favorite jersey in the history of jerseys. It is beyond terrible. Whoever designed that should be fired into the sun.
Has anyone found that island in Bridgeport?
Bring back the Sound Tigers branding.
The current Islanders set is perfect.
Grew up an isles fan from day 1! Imo,the best jersey is the original!

Our jerseys rock. 90% of 3rd jerseys are disastrous
Yeah their first RR was very unoriginal but man is it sharp. Absolutely love it.

RIP the soundtigers
NO,we all burned Tavares jerseys in effigy cause of his Deusche move and the hurt he put on us losing a return haul!
I still have love for the 96/97 islanders jersey, it was the oh crap how do we fix this jersey 😂
Will the New York Islanders bring back the short-lived “Fisherman” logo for the 2025-26 NHL season?
Islanders ALWAYS looked best in NAVY. Royal is for the Rangers, Navy is for the Islanders.
Only other with 4 are the Canadiens as you know!
The classic 80s look of the dynasty years is my favorite..the one that deserves the Trammps Treatment (Burn Baby Burn) is the “fish stick” logo 🤮
No DiPietro?
Fish Sticks rule! LGI
I used to have that Islanders orange Alternate jersey but I gave it away
You should do a countdown for the worst jerseys in your collection
If the Islanders had to use an old fisherman because only old men remember when they were great, the Maple Leafs need a casket as their logo.
i like the fishman aaahahahaha maybe its the teal!
Questions like why? And can we have fish sticks 😂😂😂
Could you do an ugliest jersey list of ones you own?

Well our Mets are kinda like our isles the last 3 decades, not good!

A Highliner is a vessel 🚢
